iPhone 7 plus portrait mode: ingenious or rubbish

Since a couple of month the iPhone 7plus is out, and one very special feature is this portrait mode. I got it very early. And had to wait until the release of the portrait mode. It has some ups and downs - and it is still in a beta phase....
My questions:
    • Does it work?
    • How does it perform?
    • Lets start with some technical considerations.Technically it is a pretty remarkable approach:
    • The photo is shot with the "telephoto-lens of the iPhone
    • The iPhone camera scans which part of the image is where
    • the "portrait subject" remains sharp
    • the other lens is set at shortest distance to deliver a blurred image
    • and than the magic starts: the art of the photo which should be blurred will be mixed according to the information what is before and behind the subject.
    • Quite ingenious approach. The simulation of a larger sensor with a smaller one.
      null.gif
But what is the portrait mode like? Well - I took my lens with the nicest bokeh I own on a Full Frame camera. I tried to make the same shot with the iPhone and my Canon EOS 5DMk IV with the Zeiss Milvus 50 mm f1.4 (I know pretty unfair... to some extend...)Above you see the result: Matching this I would say: Well the iPhone ends up with a f5.6-ish aperture... For full frame: pretty slow... But keep in mind... This is full frame... In reality this means - to name it with typical lenses used...:
    • Full frame: f5.6: sorry, but there are -literally no such slow 50mm lenses available for full frame...
    • APS-C: f4.x: You end up with 4.x-ish values: let´s assume a 24-70mm or 24-105mm f4.0 will deliver the same amount of bokeh...
    • µ43 (Olympus, Lumix): f 2.8: In this case you get the same amount of bokeh from the iPhone as if you would own a 12-40mm f2.8 (Oly) or 12-35 f2.8 (Pana)... And this sounds much nicer.

Canon Continues to Develop Supertelephoto Zoom

HTML:
<p>Back in 2016 we had heard a few times that <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?s=supertelephoto+zoom">Canon would be introducing a new supertelephoto zoom</a>, something like an EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS. This is the type of lens segment that is dominated by Sigma and Tamron, as Canon’s longest “affordable” zoom is the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II.</p>
<p>Since the start of 2017, all has been quiet in regards to such a lens. Recently we’ve started to hear about the development progress of a new supertelephoto zoom from Canon.</p>
<p>While the lens won’t be coming in 2017, we’re told there’s a good chance it will come in the first half of 2018. We’re also told that Canon seems to have a goal to give any new lens some kind of a unique feature over the competition. What that could be for a supertelephoto zoom is anyones guest, but recent history does show some innovation in the lens department from Canon.</p>
<p>We have seen such <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/patent-canon-ef-200-600mm-f4-5-5-6-is/">optical formula patents</a> from as far back as 2015, but since the demise of the patent hunter site Egami, we haven’t seen anything more.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Breakthrough Photography Launches World's First Tempered GND & ND Filters

HTML:
<strong>SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA</strong> – May 1st, 2017 – Breakthrough Photography unveiled a new line of filters which includes the X4 GND and X4 ND Square – the world’s first tempered GND and Square ND filters – which is available for <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/breakthrough/dark-cpl-and-x4-gnd">pre-order on Kickstarter by clicking here</a>.</p>
<p>The new line of filters consists of six new products: Dark CPL, X4 GND (100mm & 150mm), X4 ND Square (100mm & 150mm) and a 100mm holder called the X100 Holder. Breakthrough Photography also claims the X4 GND and X4 ND Square filters to be the world’s sharpest and most color neutral.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“With the professional outdoor photographer in mind, we’re excited to introduce the world’s first tempered glass GND and square ND filter system, available in both 100mm and 150mm formats. We also guarantee these filters to be the world’s sharpest and most color neutral GND and square ND filters.” said founder and photographer Graham Clark.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/40eee260dd95940cc77aa9f6c9ae78a5_original_grande.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-29320" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/40eee260dd95940cc77aa9f6c9ae78a5_original_grande.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="334" /></a></p>
<h3><strong>Dark CPL</strong></h3>
<p>Breakthrough Photography is introducing a ND and CPL combination filter, which they call a ‘Dark CPL’. “Stacking ND and CPL filters is a common scenario for outdoor photographers. But the primary drawback of doing this is vignetting at 16mm on a full-frame setup. By combining our <a href="http://amzn.to/2pbMg6O">X4 ND</a> and X4 CPL into one filter – which we call a Dark CPL – we’ve eliminated vignetting down to 16mm on a full-frame setup.”</p>
<p>The X4 ND Filter is the highest rated HD on the market, check it out at <a href="http://amzn.to/2pbMg6O">Amazon</a> & <a href="https://bhpho.to/2p8RrDA">B&H Photo</a></p>
<p>The Dark CPL is compatible with the following camera and lens systems: Leica®, Carl Zeiss® lenses, Schneider Xenon®, Canon® Cinema and L lenses, Nikon®, Sony®, Fuji® and others.</p>
<p>Dark CPL thread sizes: 46, 49, 52, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77, 82, 86, 95 and 105mm</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SS-_2017-05-03_at_11.52.28_PM_large.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-29321" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SS-_2017-05-03_at_11.52.28_PM_large.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="432" /></a></p>
<p> </p>
<h3><strong>X4 GND</strong></h3>
<p>Singh-Ray’s line of American-made GND filters have been the industry leader for decades, delivering unparalleled color neutrality. Singh-Ray’s use of high quality CR-39 optical resin also provided unparalleled resolving power.</p>
<p>The X4 GND introduces a new era of durability and resolving power by using SCHOTT B270® optical glass, made in Germany, and it’s the world’s first tempered glass GND. The result is an incredibly durable filter glass that doesn’t break even when dropped onto hard surfaces.</p>
<p>“For years I’ve been a happy user of Singh-Ray’s great line of GND filters. I loved the performance, but the durability of resin filters in general is not so great for meeting the demands of outdoor photographers. And then there’s this problem of image quality and distortion once the surface of the resin GND has been scratched or warped.” said Clark. “After we introduced the X4 ND, I made it our number one goal to reinvent the GND. We encountered numerous manufacturing and engineering problems along the way, but we finally did it, and the X4 GND is the result of all that hard work.”</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SS-_2017-05-03_at_11.54.24_PM_grande.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-29322" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SS-_2017-05-03_at_11.54.24_PM_grande.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="285" /></a></p>
<p> </p>
<h3><strong>X4 ND Square</strong></h3>
<p>Breakthrough Photography is also introducing a new neutral density filter in 100mm and 150mm square formats, called the X4 ND Square.</p>
<p>“Since the introduction of the X4 ND, photographers have continually asked us if we could make it available in 100mm and 150mm square formats.” said Clark. “We’re excited to announce the X4 ND Square, which shares the same technology as our X4 ND circular filters, making the X4 ND Square the world’s sharpest and most color neutral square ND filter. And like the X4 GND, they’re also tempered.”</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SS-_2017-05-03_at_11.55.12_PM_grande.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-29323" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SS-_2017-05-03_at_11.55.12_PM_grande.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="302" /></a></p>
<h3><strong>X100 HOLDER</strong></h3>
<p>Breakthrough Photography is also releasing a new universal 100mm filter holder, called the X100 Holder, which they claim eliminates vignetting down to 16mm on a full-frame setup, and it features an innovative snap-lock mechanism for securely connecting 100mm holders to the camera lens.</p>
<p>X100 Holder Features:</p>
<ul>
<li>No vignetting down to 16mm on a full-frame setup</li>
<li>Innovative Snap-Lock mechanism makes attaching holder quick and secure</li>
<li>One handed operation for attaching and detaching</li>
<li>Traction on exterior of holder makes it easier to grip</li>
<li>CNC machined with aircraft grade alumium provides smooth rotation</li>
<li>Only $49 for X100 Holder, $7 for each adapter ring</li>
</ul>
<p>“A new 100mm filter system just wouldn’t be complete without a great universal holder, and we found a real lack of thoughtfully designed holders on the market, so we decided to try our hand at redesigning the traditional holder. It took well over 50 prototypes to get to the final product.” said Clark. “There were a few features I wanted in a holder that I thought other outdoor photographers might appreciate. The first being the ability to quickly attach/detach with one hand. That led to the second feature, a reliable snap-lock mechanism at the top of the holder, which makes a confident ‘click’ when attaching to the adapter ring. The third was to eliminate vignetting at 16mm on a full-frame setup even with 3 levels installed. I’ve always been disappointed with filter holder and adapter ring prices being so high despite the quality being low, so we decided to go the other way and price our new universal X100 Holder right at only $49, and only $7 for each aluminum adapter ring, $17 for brass. And since it’s universal, it will even work with your existing 100mm filters.”</p>
<p>Each X100 Holder is manufactured from aircraft grade aluminum and features two levels installed, and includes a third level which can be easily installed by the photographer. The front of the X100 Holder also has traction, similar to the traction frame on Breakthrough’s X4 ND filter.</p>
<p><strong>SINGH-RAY AND LEE GND 100% BUYBACK</strong></p>
<p>With the launch of the X100 Filter System, Breakthrough Photography is also starting a new buyback program where they will buy any Singh-Ray or Lee GND filter purchased within the last 15 years from an approved retailer, and provide the photographer with 100% of the value paid on the GNDs in the form of a gift card, which never expires. Valid until May 1st, 2018.</p>
<p><a href="https://breakthrough.photography/pages/100-gnd-buyback-for-singh-ray-and-lee">Click here</a> for more details on the buyback.</p>

Review: Canon EOS M6 Mirrorless Camera by TDP

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of Canon’s latest mirrorless offering, the EOS M6.</p>
<p>As expected, the new mirrorless camera from Canon is quite capable, though not the groundbreaking advancement a lot of folks are after.</p>
<p><strong>The-Digital-Picture Summary:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>If you have been waiting to jump into a Canon MILC and an APS-C sensor format works for you, the EOS M6 should be a great choice.</p>
<p>While one may feel a tendency to treat a camera of this size as a point and shoot model, using it only for those still-important snapshot opportunities that pop up (it works extremely well for these) would mean underutilizing a highly-capable camera. The M6 has an excellent AF system (intelligent, quickly controllable and good speed) and an impressive set of features and controls. While a complete beginner can employ this camera to capture high quality images with little effort, the advanced user who takes the time to learn this camera’s features will have great control over their imagery. Whether it is tucked into a pocket or in camera case for backup purposes or used as a primary camera, the M6 is a little camera that deserves some serious attention. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-M6.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>It’s likely a tough choice between the EOS M5 and the EOS M6, but in both cases, you’re going to get a capable APS-C mirrorless camera that will be as familiar to use as your EOS DSLR or G series PowerShot.</p>

Modest Growth in Camera Sales According to CIPA

HTML:
CIPA has released their sales numbers for the first quarter of 2017 and the news is better than we’ve seen over the last couple of years.</p>
<p>The sales if interchangeable lens cameras (Mirrorless & DSLR) saw a 6% increase over the same quarter in 2016. A big boost coming from mirrorless cameras, which according to CIPA, now account for 36% of all ILC’s shipped.</p>
<p>The sales of compact/fixed lens cameras have gone flat, which is good news after 21 straight quarters of decline in the segment. The focus by Canon on its G series prosumer cameras seems to have helped raise the value of compact camera shipments by 7%.</p>
<p>For the moment, the decline in camera sales may have reached the bottom and we may see a little bit of growth in 2017.</p>
<p>You can see all the CIPA data <a href="http://www.cipa.jp/stats/documents/e/d-201703_e.pdf">here</a> and <a href="http://www.cipa.jp/stats/documents/e/d-201703_e.pdf">here</a>.</p>

What is your Canon wish list ?

For me, I have been carrying a PnS as companion to my DSLR, starting from S95 to G5X. G5X is really great as I can use my existing flash system to boost its usability. However, I still dream of having a low light performer as my companion camera. I am looking at M5, but at the same time wishing that Canon would release a mirrorless FF sooner, not a MILC but a Canon Mirrorless FF with 35mm fixed lens (like the Sony RX1, but not with Sony brand) someday.

Well, what is it that you wish from Canon for your personal desire instead of what Canon should do for surviving the competition ?

All is Quiet, but the Good Stuff is Coming

HTML:
Now that NAB is over (did anyone notice it was on?), we can get back to what’s coming next. Unfortunately we don’t really have too much new to report at this time. We know that’s going to be changing soon as this summer (northern hemisphere) should be a good one for a lot of Canon shooters.</p>
<p>We expect the EOS 6D Mark II, EF 85mm f/1.4L IS and EOS Rebel SL2 to be announced before September hits.</p>
<p>On the cinema side, we expect the Cinema EOS C200 body, a 4K little brother to the EOS C300 Mark II. We haven’t confirmed the name “EOS C200” yet, but all signs are pointing that way. We hope to confirm this soon.</p>
<p>We don’t know for certain what other EF lenses are coming in 2017 at this time, but we expect there will be at least one more after the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS.</p>
<p>We haven’t heard anything about new G series PowerShot cameras, but suspect there will be at least one coming before the end of the year.</p>
<p>We’re just reminding you of what’s coming as we continue to get questions from some very eager EOS 6D Mark II potential buyers.</p>

Mercedes vs. Lexus.... huh? A 2 week spin w/ a Mk IV

Mercedes &BMW are still a profitable automobile manufacturers, but you have to admit the brand managers blew it some 20 years ago by not crushing the upstart Japanese entrants into to the luxo market. And now there is even the Korean entrants.... so much for being content with modest growth, etc.

Canon will continue to be a profitable imaging device company, There is still a bit of cache left to the Merc, but the real function buyers are moving away from Merc/BMW at a pretty good clip and both those institutional brands are scrambling to get to the front of the parade. And scrambling in a ham handed way.

I just took the 5DmkIV for a 2 week spin. Yes it produced great still images..... as did the Sony... But when I went to video mode.... well I don't want to be known a basher so I will leave it there.

Canon for all the world feels like the lumbering Mercedes of the early 90s trying to get it's head wrapped around the demands of the younger generation. You have to admit Sony has made great strides in overall market share, etc. And perhaps shortly Canon will glide path into a feature competitive offering while Sony fires off technology fuselage after fuselage until they land on the right config.

I can remember the debates of the establishment PDA (palm pilot) expressing that people really didn't want a swiss army knife does it all single device....... If you can remember palm pilot or even fortunately the Apple Note.....

The self righteous stills shooters not wanting to have to pay for all that video overhead in software, hardware and price remind me a lot of my ex wife who insisted on having 2 devices PDA and phone, and now updates to the new apple as soon as it is released.

Yep pretty disappointed in the Mk IV and won't be upgrading anytime soon. If I do it will be a brand change.

Image stabilizer on or off when on a tripod?

I've read in the past that it's best to turn off the image stabilizer with a lens that's equipped with it when shooting on a tripod. Theoretically I guess the IS can actually induce more vibration in the shot that in could mitigate, which should, in theory, be zero.

But in real life, what do you guys think is the way to go? I'm not sure I buy the whole theory of the image stabilizer adding vibrational blurriness to a photo taken on a tripod. Not to mention, in practical terms, couldn't leaving it on help to reduce any vibration induced if the surface that your tripod is on is not completely, 100% stable with no vibration?

Worse yet, since I so rarely mess with that switch on the lens, I find myself forgetting to turn it back on when I'm not on a tripod anymore.

filename format updates??

Hey gang, two questions..
1. why does canon not have custom file names on all camera bodies? I know its on the the high end bodies.. is it just a $$ games with options?

2. I have searched the rumors board and I see as far back as 2012, isnt it time Canon updated its file name format?
I am using the 7D MarkII and have a custom Name with my Initials and a 5 digit # Example RSB8xxxx.CR2
this way I sort of keep up with the # of shutter clicks and limits my Dupe file names. And I can group my pictures in groups of 10k.

As I start to approach the 100k Mark for photos taken, I see that I have to alter may prefix to support that range. Not that I dont have to change at the 10k mark already.

I would think that now its 2017 isnt it time for a new format? maybe allow a 6 digit # by default?

New Firmware for 7D2

Tonight Canon dropped a new firmware build (1.1.1). You can get it here...
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/dslr/eos-7d-mark-ii/?subtab=downloads-firmware

The changes, according to the Canon website:
1. Enhances reliability of communications when transferring images using Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E7 (A/B/C/D/E).
2. Corrects the phenomenon of Err70 which occurs with certain combinations of settings.
3. Corrects the phenomenon in which in very rare cases the shutter can no longer be released.
4. Enhances reliability of operations for specific custom function settings.

I can't vouch for it, as it's only 42 percent installed on my body at the moment.

Rokinon (Samyang) SP 14mm f/2.4 Review | Dustin

I just wanted to check in to share the linkage for the Rokinon SP 14mm f/2.4 lens that I just finished reviewing. It’s a very intriguing option, particularly for shooting the night sky.
