Hi Canon JP.

OK were told the EOS 6D MKII is coming in 2017 so can you please at least have the following on the specification list:-

28MP dual pixel sensor
45 point cross type AF (centre dual-cross type)
63 zone with 7,560 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor
100% viewfinder coverage
Anti-flicker
Max. Shutter speed 1/8000 to 30sec
Intervalometer
Flash sync at 1/250
6fps continuos shooting
NFC
Dual pixel AF focusing
Customised quick menu
Improve weather seals

Retain from current camera

GPS
Wi-Fi (but improve the connectivity which is arcane)
Dynamic range
LP-E6N battery

Body size is already good compromise, slightly lighter would be cool.

Master of Photography - Competition on Sky, your thoughts?

Hi there,
I have just been watching two episodes of "Master of Photography", which is a contest on Sky. Just like the type of reality TV you know from america´s topmodel or a multitude of cooking shows. But it´s a photography challenge.
Did anybody here watch the season or episodes? What do you think? I believe it´s a great concept, but due to a horrible jury not really as nice to watch as it could be. Room for improvement, in my opinion.
My more detailed thoughts here: http://photojoern.de/media-tv-web/masters-of-photography-sky-a-review/

Nikon Japan Warns of Image Corruption with Transfer2/View NX-i on macOS Sierra

Since there are likely some Nikon users on this forum, I thought I'd post this. I'm not bashing Nikon, things like this can happen. It does point up the need for backups. Storage media is relatively inexpensive and a backup can save you from a serious loss.

"Thank you very much for your continued patronage of Nikon products.

It turned out that image data may be corrupted when transferring images using Nikon Transfer 2 on macOS Sierra version 10.12.2 in our software "View NX - i".

ViewNX-i Ver.1.2.4 which was released on November 22, 2016 supported macOS Sierra version 10.12, but since it was not designed for macOS Sierra version 10.12.1 or later, we are currently working on compatibility.

For this reason, until compatibility with macOS Sierra version 10.12.1 or later can be confirmed, and please do not use Nikon Transfer 2 until an announcement from us.

We are diligently working on a solution for this phenomenon and we will notify once a fix has been issued. "

Phottix Indra 500lc first impressions

I just received the new Phottix Indra 500lc and just wanted to share my first impressions for those of you who may be interested in mixing a studio strobe with your Canon flashes.

I am a wedding photographer and have been using a strobe in addition to my flashes for a couple of years now. I went through a couple different strobes, but whatever I used required me to use some kind of other radio system with my Canon 600s. It was always a pain to me and I have been waiting for something like the Indra 500lc for a long time.

Here are a few observations I have had with just a little testing:
-It is small and portable. I am used to the flashpoint rove light which is similar in size to the B1 and this little Indra is tiny. The reflector is also small (5") and it comes in a nice little bag that is small but will cary the strobe, the battery and cord along with a Canon 600ex and lasso trigger (very similar to the Canon ST-E3-RT)

-The external battery is not really much of an additional hassle. Obviously it is nice to have a strobe with a built in battery and no cords, but the smaller size of the strobe almost makes up for the lack of an integrated battery. The battery that comes with the Indra is light weight, the cords have very secure connections and it connects to the light stand easily with a nice clamp bracket or a strap. I think the battery actually adds a better overall balance to the light stand and I am not as worried about having my light 13' in the air. Set up time is a few seconds longer, but those few seconds are hardly a hassle.

-Controlling the light with a Canon flash, ST-E3, or a phottix Laso is so nice! I hate having additional triggers with my on camera flash during a wedding. Even a trigger with a pass through hot shoe is annoying to me. Working directly with the Canon system is perfect for my needs. Not only can you control the power, but you can change the mode form manual to ETTL, turn on and off HSS and even turn on the modeling light all from the master flash.

-This light has plenty of power and the recycling time is very respectable. I am used to the 600 watt rove light but this thing has almost as much power and after some comparison shots, I don't see myself needing the extra 100 watts the rove light gives me. There is about a 2 second recycle time at full power, which is much faster than what I was used to with the rove light.

-The Laso trigger from Phottix seems like a much better option than the Canon ST-E3-RT. Not only does the Laso have an AF assist, but it seems to have a much greater range. I walked about 300 feet away and the Laso trigger worked flawlessly with both the Indra and a 600ex. However, when I tried to use my 430 ex III I had to move closer to get the lights to sync up.

I am looking forward to testing the light out at a wedding soon, but so far I am very impressed. Below is a picture with a size comparison of the Indra with a Canon 600ex. Also the camera is a 1DX2 with a 430ex III flash on top.

What's a good upgrade from my S100?

I enjoyed my S90 and picked up an S100 a few years later when they were cheap. I love the tiny form factor and the ability to shoot RAW. I keep one in my car and one goes with me on hiking, bicycling or motorcycle trips when I don't have space for a Rebel. I don't abuse them and they are both still working fine.

Have pocket sized RAW cameras improved enough since the S100 that an upgrade would provide better IQ or faster autofocus?

What would you recommend? I'd prefer to stay with Canon as I'm familiar with their menu system, but I'm open to other brands.

I tested out the theory behind DxOMark's F-Stop blues article

I was kind of put off when I read the DxOMark article referencing how very fast lenses on digital cameras are a waste due to the sensor's limited ability to gather light from a lens with a very wide aperture. You can read the article here, but the basic gist is that digital sensors are somewhat incapable of registering light from very wide aperture lenses, so cameras secretly bump up the ISO at wide apertures in order to compensate for this.

https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/F-stop-blues

I really didn't want to believe that dropping serious money on a 50mm f1.0 was completely pointless, so I decided to do a sort of "blind" test with my 5D Mark III.

I set the camera up on a tripod, attached a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens to the camera, obtained focus, and then removed the lens, stuck a piece of tape over the electrical contacts on the lens so that the camera could not discern what kind of lens was attached to it, and I took a photo in manual mode at 1/50 of a second and ISO 1000. I then did the same thing with a Canon 50mm 1.0 lens.

This gave me two photos, one taken with a 1.4 lens wide open, and another with a 1.0 lens wide open, both at the same camera settings, and both taken so that the camera had no way of knowing what lens it was taking the photo with.

The result? the 50mm 1.0 was noticeably brighter than the 50mm 1.4. I guess if I really wanted to I could get into a big technical analysis of whether or not the 1.0 lens gave exactly a 1 stop increase in brightness or not. But for me, right now, just knowing that having a 1.0 aperture does actually make a difference on a digital camera is enough.

Here are the photos. Photo 5540 is with the 50mm 1.0 lens, 5541 is with the 50mm 1.4. The only modifications I made to them were to convert them both to sRGB and resize them down to 3000px. I admit the focus on the 1.4 image is pretty bad, but for the purposes of this, I wasn't too concerned with perfect focus.

Problem with tethering

I am trying to improve my skills in a studio and tried to make my cameras work using tethered capture in LR. That turned out to be anything but easy.

My 5DSR will not be recognised by the Macbook Pro at all. My brand new 5DIV goes into a cycle of connected/not connected and impossible to use. My 1DXII works like a dream, except the angled USB cable will not fit with the RRS L-bracket attached. Same computer, same cable and same Lightroom.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any advice on what I should do differently?

Sync problem with EX550 and Yongnou YN-E3-RX

Hi Guys!

I´m quite happy with my new flash-trigger-system from Yongnuo. I ordered two cheap RT-600 and the YN-E3-RT to guide them. I ordered some YN-E3-RX receivers for my older flashes too. With the Nissin 866II, the YN-E3-RX works well. But I have an issue with the older Canon 550EX flash. The 550, mounted on the YN-E3-RX, is out of sync. It flashes, but the light is to late, so it has no effect on the image illumination.

Do you know, if the YN-E3-RX is incompatible with the Canon 550EX? Or can I fix this problem?

Thanks
Daniela

P.s.: And it is incredible, what an rookie like me can perform with my rudimentary lightformers and speedlites. 8) It was right to go on an wireless device to change all settings by the on camera remote control. So easy and time saving.

Review: Canon EOS M5 by DPReview

HTML:
DPReview has completed their review of the Canon EOS M5.</p>
<p><strong>From DPReview:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The EOS M5 has plenty going for it. Shooting smooth, properly focused video is incredibly easy, and the new 24MP sensor has made great strides in overall image quality. Dual Pixel autofocus makes for faster, more precise focusing and really makes the M5 shine with adapted lenses. Unfortunately, it sits in a crowded market and its excellent usability can’t quite make up for the fact that you can arguably get more camera for less money elsewhere. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-m5-review">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>Most of the reviews we’ve read about the Canon EOS M5 have been relatively positive, especially when compared to the first iterations of the EOS M system. Canon may have “caught up” in most cased as far as a mirrorless body goes, but they are still lacking lenses for more serious shooters, autofocus is still middle of the road, and there’s still a feeling Canon isn’t fully invested in mirrorless systems in their current form.</p>
<p>It looks like the EOS M5 is a good buy if you want to stay with the familiarity of the Canon system.</p>

Patent: Canon EF 135 f/2L w/Apodization Filters

HTML:
Canon has filed a patent for an EF 135mm f/2L optical formula with apodization filters.</p>
<p>From <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apodization" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Wikipedia</a> (Via <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=19701">TDP</a>):</p>
<blockquote><p><b>Apodization</b> is an optical filtering technique, and its literal translation is “removing the foot”. It is the technical term for changing the shape of a mathematical function, an electrical signal, an optical transmission or a mechanical structure. In optics, it is primarily used to remove Airy disks caused by diffraction around an intensity peak, improving the focus.</p></blockquote>

moving to 5d MK IV

hi all
i decide to share with all of you my past experience with Sony a7r II , one year ago i sold my 5d MK III and went to Sony a7 II then a7r II and i still keep my canon glasses .
today i sold my Sony camera after may be 6 month for many reasons :
if really you plan to move to Sony system you have to move to whole system with lenses other wise it's kinda useless and you will not enjoy most of features .
another point also it's not really that solid camera and i experience 2 times problem while shooting in snow plus some issues of compatibly even i buy the original grip and 3 original battery still i have to restart the camera and not only me its normal issues happen with a lot of Sony users .
focus system not that easy to deal with and what ever you have expensive adapter still you will have some problems i have to shoot 5 times to make sure my pics in right focus
i may do wrong and some of my friends told me that you are crazy ;D but am quite sure that i will not go wrong with canon 5d mk IV .
sony is good camera but may be i don't like it personally ...... your opinion guys about this moving is highly appreciated .

Eye-bombing

Not my own idea and for sure it is not new, but when I found some reports of this kind of photography I wanted to do it on my own. Eye-bombing. You place some eyes on objects in urban places and bring suddenly life to them. They somehow get a face and you bring people some joy in their everyday routine.

Patent: Canon 3.6-255mm F2.8-7 w/ Built-in Extender for PowerShot

An interesting lens patent for a PowerShot camera has appeared, in the form of a Canon 3.6-255mm F2.8-7 lens with a built-in extender that can make the lens 2000mm f/10 when converted to 35mm.</p>

70-200 f4 L IS USM+1,4X or 70-300 f4-5,6 L IS USM ?

Dear friends,
I have a question for you.
In the photobag for "general use" I have the old 70-300 4-5.6 IS USM (& 24-70 f4 L) and I am not satisfied about the quality, especially at 300mm.
What do I buy: 70-200 f4 L IS USM + 1,4X III or 70-300 4-5.6 L IS USM ?
The price difference is not decisive.
Are to be mounted on Canon EOS 6D (landscape), 7DII ("easy" wildlife) and 1200D (camera of my wife), for travel photos and nature (for "true" wildlife I have also the 100-400 MK2)
I have read many tests and the 70-300 L IS USM (100mm more) attracts me very much but does not accept the 1,4 X... >:( and the 70-200 is a...razor
Is the sharpness comparable between the two "white"?
Thanks
GPaolo

PS: I would like to take this opportunity to do to all the friends of CANON RUMORS my Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Good photos at all !
