So does the 16-35 f/2.8L III have a vignetting problem or not?

At three different sites, we've seen a consistent read on 4+ stops corner darkening at 16mm f/2.8 with the new 16-35 f/2.8L III:

TDP: https://goo.gl/pO4uJi (Greater than 4 stops vignetting)
"At 16mm wide open at f/2.8, this lens has very strong vignetting with the corners darkened by over 4 stops, impacting the benefit that the f/2.8 aperture provides."

PZ: https://goo.gl/6dwafV (4.6 stops vignetting)
"A major weakness is the high amount of light falloff in the image corners at 16mm @ f/2.8. A vignetting of 4.6 EV (f-stops) is WAY beyond our usual scale for full format lenses. Unless you have to go for f/2.8 or simply like the effect, you should stop down to at least f/5.6 in order to reduce the light falloff to an moderate degree."

LensTip: https://goo.gl/e2sWwR (Greater than 4 stops vignetting)
"It would be difficult to call this situation other than dramatic. Such high vignetting we haven’t seen so far in our tests. At 16 mm and by f/2.8 in the frame corners disappears 75% of light (−4.07 EV)"

YET, the much pilloried-with-how-they-review-lenses DXO dropped this peach on the world recently:
https://goo.gl/dLKYFt

Can't link it exactly, so either go to Measurements --> Vignetting --> Profiles or just look at the graphic below. They are claiming the vignetting on the III effectively being the same as the II at 16mm f/2.8.

And DPR, partner to DXO (I believe) went so far as to confirm this (more manageable) level of vignetting -- from the DPR author of the lens review, responding to a forum question about it:

"The DXO data reports a 2 and 1/3 stop decrease in the corners when shot at 16mm and an aperture of F2.8; that matches what we saw in the field. Check out our real world image comparison widget and see for yourself, but our observations agree with the DXO data."

So... Does anyone have this new lens yet and can tell us where this really landed?

- A

Reader Poll Results: The Best of 2016 from Canon

HTML:
We love yearly best of lists, and this year we let the readers decide which new products in 2016 were your favourites, as well as what you’re most looking forward to in 2016. I don’t think any of the results are a huge surprise, but we did have a lot of great new Canon products to choose from.</p>
<p>We wanted to keep things positive and didn’t bother with a “worst of” list, which I don’t think applies to Canon, as they continue to release very good DSLRs and class leading lenses. We’re on the fence about the EOS M5 at this time, but early reviews look promising.</p>
<p>We’re hoping for another great year of new products in 2017!</p>
<p>The poll results are after the break.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Favourite New Canon ILC/DSLR Camera of 2016</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Winner: <a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/promotion/12088/canon-eos-5d-mark-iv.html?origSearch=eos%205d%20mark%20iv/bi/2466/kbid/3296">Canon EOS 5D Mark IV</a> (48.2%)</strong></li>
<li><em>1st Runner-up: Canon EOS-1D X Mark II (30.8%)</em></li>
<li><em>2nd Runner-up: Canon EOS 80D (10.3%)</em></li>
</ul>
<p>No surprise here, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV was the most anticipated new photography product of 2016 and it didn’t disappoint. While not viewed as a revolutionary update to the EOS 5D Mark III, it’s definitely worth the upgrade if your budget allows.</p>
<p><strong>Favourite New Canon Lens of 2016</strong></p>

<li><em>2nd Runner-up: Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM (6%)</em></li>
</ul>
<p>The Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III is simply the best wide angle zoom Canon has ever produced. I’m consistently blown away by the image quality and performance of this lens. If you can afford the price of admission ($2199), you won’t be disappointed.</p>

<li><em>2nd Runner-up: None of the above (14.7%)</em></li>
</ul>
<p>The popularity of the EOS 6D has shown through, as a lot of readers are looking forward to its successor. We expect to see the Canon EOS 6D Mark II shipping before you head on vacation in July of 2017. Specifications are unreliable at this time, but we’re expecting higher resolution, an upgraded autofocus system, smaller size, lighter weight, an articulating screen and wireless charging.</p>

Review: Canon W-E1 Wi-Fi Adapter

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the Canon W-E1 Wi-Fi Adapter, which is a nice way to get wifi functionality in your Canon EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 5DS, and EOS 5DS R without breaking the bank.</p>
<p><strong>From The-Digital-Picture</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Overall, the W-E1 is a great product. For a low cost, the practically no-footprint device adds basic Wi-Fi features with the Canon Camera Connect app (and even more functionality with third-party remote control apps) to the Canon EOS 5Ds, 5Ds R and 7D Mark II. The only significant W-E1 downside is the loss of use of the SD card slot for image/video storage purposes. A great number of photographers are going to find Canon W-E1 Wi-Fi Adapter worth having in their kits and some are going to find it indispensable. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-W-E1-Wi-Fi-Adapter.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Quicker Camera Chips With Global Shutter Coming

HTML:
A <a href="http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/semiconductors/optoelectronics/a-highres-camera-that-captures-1-million-frames-per-second">report at IEEE</a> on quicker global shutter equipped sensors has come out and it appears Canon is going forward fairly aggressively in this space.</p>
<p>While some companies are working towards the quickest frame rates possible, Canon is putting their emphasis on image quality at lower frame rates.</p>
<blockquote><p>Separately, researchers from Canon’s device technology development headquarters in Kanagawa, Japan, reported memory-related improvements for high-definition image sensors that could be used to cover sporting events or in surveillance drones. While the Tohoku group is working on ultrahigh speed, the Canon group aims to improve the image quality of high-definition global shutter cameras operating at much lower frame rates of about 30 to 120 per second.</p>
<p>Like the Tohoku University chip, the Canon sensor closely integrates analog memory with sensors. In the Canon chip, each pixel in the 4046 by 2496 array has its own built in charge-based memory cell.</p></blockquote>

Some EOS M System Information [CR2]

HTML:
<p>With the EOS M5 finally hitting store shelves this month, lenses will likely be the next major addition to the system. While rumors about the EOS M have been pretty quiet, we have heard a few things recently.</p>
<ul>
<li>The EF-M 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM will be discontinued in the not so distant future.</li>
<li>The EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM has been extremely popular in Asia, which is the #2 market for mirrorless systems.</li>
<li>The first “higher end” zoom for the EOS M system will be something like a 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, and that there are no constant aperture zooms coming in the near future.</li>
<li>We will see at least one prime lens in 2017, but that there are 3 currently being tested.</li>
</ul>
<p>As always, as soon as we hear more, we’ll pass it on.</p>

5D Mark IV - IS always active in Live view?

Hey folks,

When I recently got my 5D Mark IV I soon realized something was different in live view: With image stabilized lenses (and the IS on the lens switched to "on"), as soon as live view is activated, the image stabilizer becomes permanently active. On my other camera bodies (6D and 7D Mark II), it doesnt't become active until I half press the shutter button. When I release the shutter button, IS becomes inactive again after about 3sec.. I actually prefer the latter. I feel rushed by the camera when IS is always active, it drains the battery faster and I guess it is also more stress on the motor and mechanics of the IS. And, with certain lenses, the always active IS is also quite noisy. The IS even stays active when I took a shoot in Live view and then review the pictures on the back of the camera.
Many have already observed that the battery life of the 5D Mark IV is significantly shorter than on previous Canon bodies and I guess this is (apart from the dual pixel technology) maybe one factor why the battery drains faster.

So my questions would be:
- Does your 5D Mark IV show the same behavior with IS being permanently active in Live view?
- Is there an option in the menu with which you can go back to the way it was in older Canon bodies that I haven't found yet?

Apart from this (in my opinion unnecessary) design change, I'm actually quite happy with the 5D Mark IV, especially the dynamic range improvements.

Grainy images from my 5D MK IV?

Hi.

Not sure if it´s just me or so but I feel that the images from my 5D MK IV are more grainy than from my 5d MKIII. Can that be correct? Can it be just a feeling I get because of the larger files that makes it possible to get closer to the fine details or can there be a quality issue or just how the files are? I also feel that they are softer than from my 5D MKIII.

Please give me your thoughts on this.

Regards / Johan

Stepping up from 1D IV to....?

Hi folks,
I have been a 1D IV user for some time now. While I love almost everything about my recent camera, I do miss the FF sensor of my former 6D. I see two choices here to step up to: one is the 1DX (mk I), the other would be the 5D IV (1DX II is way out of my league). I am sailing towards the 1DX due to its built, fps, high iso, price but wifi, gps, better DR, F8 AF ability that 5D IV features are more than attractive. MP differential is not a deal breaker for my, as I rarely do prints and not particularly large ones. I shoot mostly wildlife, occasionally sports, landscapes as well.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

AFMA Focal results for 5DSR and 600II +/- 1.4XIII

Spent part of today recalibrating my 5DSR with the 600 II +/- the 1.4X III. I had not been pleased with results with the 1.4X (see bird portrait thread), so I thought I'd redo the AFMA today. Had to work in doors b/c of weather, so the distance was a little tight for the 840mm (13.5 m). The bare 600 gave excellent results, but the astigmatism values with the 1.4X were poor compared Focal's average user results. I attach the results from Focal (hope you can read the info on each). I'd appreciate expert users of Focal and perhaps this combo to comment on whether my results w the 1.4X III are really "poor" compared to typical users. This is my 'go to' combo for avian pics, so if I have a bad 1.4X, it would be good to know.

I'm not sure that the astigmatism factors are the critical readout, but I do know I have not been too happy with the results in the field. That said, the results today did change the AFMA from -6 to -1, so that could be the whole problem.

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART Review

Hi everyone. I just thought I would share linkage for those interested in my coverage of the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART - a lens that I know a lot of you are interested in.

Text Review: http://bit.ly/2gIt0sy
Final Video Review: http://bit.ly/2gJ9prW

I've also got a specific video on resolution and image quality: http://bit.ly/2gPeRdS
And one on the bokeh and rendering: http://bit.ly/2g2gILb

It's a very sharp lens, though with more CA than I expected and comes in a bit shy of 85mm in true focal length (when compared to the Tamron 85 VC, Otus 85, and a 70-200 set to 85mm). Lowest vignette that I've ever seen on an 85, and I had very good focus accuracy in the center group on the 5D Mark IV with accuracy dropping some as I moved into the outer points.

what's up with the 70-300 range?

depending how you count them, canon has about half a dozen different lenses in the 70-300 zoom range, but all being variable f/5.6, is there room for another?

i'd be really interested to see something longer than 70-200, faster than f/5.6, with modern L worthy IQ, but smaller and cheaper than the big white 200-400 x1.4.

would something like a 100-300 f/4 be possible for under $3k?

Canon 7D Mark II - some questions

Good evening, I recently purchased a 7D Mark II to replace my old 7D. So far, so good. A few questions:

1. Is there currently or will there be (expected or speculation) a firmware update that allows the user to see the exposure meter at the bottom of the viewfinder? By default it is on the right side while in Manual mode (which is what I shoot). In the 7D and in my 5DIII it's at the bottom of the viewfinder. It's a big adjustment, would love to see that modified (although I suppose I'll get over it in any event). Was surprised not to find previous discussions of this on this forum, although maybe I just didn't see it or search well. Through other forums I became aware of a work-around (sort of) where you set ISO to "A" but then limit your auto-ISO range to whatever you desire (e.g. 100-1600) and that does the trick ... only I don't like not directly controlling ISO so it's not really sustainable for me. I also note that the exposure meter does not appear on the top plate either, so any thoughts of how to get that to show up would be welcome as well.

2. Is there a way to fire the shutter without recording an image, other than by taking the card out? Say, for example, I want to show off the fast shutter and fps (but don't want to take cards out or record a bunch of nonsense images).

3. I'm happy the 7D II takes the additional focus screen (the Eh-S). I haven't gotten one yet, but expect to at some point. What are your experiences with this? And why does the B&H listing for the Eh-S state it is for "For Lenses With Apertures of f/1.8-2.8"? Is that just a general recommendation? I understand you can't reasonably use it with a slow aperture but I'm talking about on the fast end, e.g. my 50 L/1.2. There's not a problem with using the Eh-S is there, at 1.2, 1.4, etc.?

Thanks for any insight!
