Canon 5D Mark IV vs Sony A7R II interesting review.

Dear friends,

what i found on "The Slanted Lens" video page on youtube, seems quite interesting to me. It's a modest "duel" that every possible buyer of one or the other camera has on mind. There are many guys, thinking of jumping ship, that should pay attention to this honest (in my opinion) comparison.

I came to my own conclusions after trying an A7R ii last year (just out of academic interest) but, 5D Mk4 was not available back then so, this is the right time to think of a straight comparison between the two of them.
To me, Sony alpha models, in general, look like quite flimsy toys with lots of specs but little respect to the consumer when it comes to after market value; otherwise, why do they go on changing models every single year? Apart from this, even though i'm just an enthousiast amateur, with a fair bit of G.A.S. and a deep pocket to support it, i just can't take seriously a piece of equipment that needs a new battery and overheats every half an hour (or less in many occasions), is a pain in the butt to go through the menus, feels tiny in someones hands (at least mine), and gets time and effort to adjust correctly (sony stills colors are awful compared to Canon) in post processing.

Apart from all mentioned above, i honestly think that A7R ii is not better than my pair of 5D Mk3s when it comes to high ISO noise (let alone the 5D Mk4). Taking pictures myself last year, it was obvious that noise above ISO 3200 with A7R ii was waaaay worse than that of 5D Mk3; it was the resolution that saved the day because you had quite some room to "play" with in post. It's also apparent in comparison tools like that of DPReview, even though many people seem biased, saying the exact opposite thing! I just can't see this "king of low light"; maybe i'm blind or my eyes are very modest to recognise its highness! Full frame 4K also, that many people praise over the Mk4 nowadays on the internet, looked like real crap on the A7R ii, with huge noise amounts and low resolution. Super 35mm with it's own crop factor, was the one that saved the game for Sony!

Now again, that's my very own opinion and everybody has one as well as an a....le (as Clint Eastwood said).
Spending some time to watch the video, you may come to interesting conclusions (at least i did), when it comes to reverse engineering of overexposing and rolling back, instead of underexposing, as well as color rendition performance between the two "contenders".

Fuji GFX 50s

I was just reading about the upcoming Fuji GFX 50s here: https://fstoppers.com/originals/why-fujis-new-medium-format-camera-important-146901

In the list of lenses a 63mm lens is mentioned and in quotes it says 50mm equivalent. Given that the Fuji is said to have a 1.7x larger sensor than a 35mm FF camera I am left wondering how the author arrived at 50mm equivalent. I'm at a loss and math is not my strong point. Can somebody help me out with this?

Also, leaf shutter vs. no leaf shutter?

I don't see HSS mentioned either.

Review: Irix 15mm f/2.4 @ LensTip

http://www.lenstip.com/486.1-Lens_review-Irix_15_mm_f_2.4_Blackstone_Introduction.html

They tested the Blackstone version (remember there are two versions of this lens) on a 5D3. Still no 5DS test model at LensTip. ???

Pros: Sharp. Manages distortion better than the Canon 14L II and Samyang 14mm f/2.8. Can be front filtered.

Cons: Vignetting for days -- on FF at f/11 it's still losing 1 EV (wow!). Can struggle with flare. No AF. Not as good as the Samyang for coma, but it's better than the 14L II.

Decent for daylight landscapes, I'd guess, but astro folks might be a bit disappointed with the vignetting and coma.

Who would throw ~1200€ for new 300mm 4L IS II or 400mm 5.6L IS?

Hello Everybody,

as i own a 300mm 4L IS lens which was released back in 1997 I desperatelly want to have the same lens with today advanced technology.
I don't need a zoom lens for the generally known reasons ;)

This is what i wish:

300mm 4L IS ii with similar performance with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters like the 300mm 2.8 ii
With todays stabilizer and USM autofocus.
Also I wish for weather sealing and that the lens hood is still integrated like current version.
I also wish the reduction of minimal focus distance to 1m (like the 100-400)
I Prefer the 300 with converters over the 400 because i can have aperture of 4 if i need.
Or:
  • 400mm 5.6L IS with todays stabilizer and USM autofocus.
Also a closer minimal focus distance is a given.

Give me your opinion if or which of the both lenses you want to see in 2017.

How to Clean Oily Residue (cooking splatter) off lens?

Hello all!!

I use my 5D3 to film my YouTube cooking show, CWI: Cooking While Intoxicated.

I often like to do somewhat close ups of my sautéing on the stove. I"m not talking right over looking into the splattering pan, but close enough to where there may be some residue from smoke and oil (it carries a long way in the air) get on the lens.

What the the best and safest way to clean the lens? I often have a filter on the lens (UV), or in the case of what I'm experimenting with this time around, is one of the Anamorphot Anamorphic lens adapters on front of my Canon 40mm pancake....and on close ups, I'll have the diopter on the end of it so I can focus closer.

I know lenses have coatings, etc...and I don't wanna scrub that off, so guessing pure alcohol or window cleaner is NOT the thing to do.

Anyway, much appreciated if you could give me some pointers for cleaning what may be a bit of cooking grime on a nice lens used for filming a cooking segment.

Thank you in advance!!

Focus Stacking etc. with the 5Dmk4

HI, I have been using DSLR Controller fairly successfully with my 5Dmk3, for remote shooting and to do focus stacking. Although some features of DSLR Controller seem to work, up till now I could not
correctly take a single photo with my 5Dmk4 and have it stored on the Camera, I have contacted the author to see if
an update is planned to DSLR controller.

Does anyone currently have an automatic solution for Focus Stacking for the 5Dmk4?

BTW. I did some manual stacks, just by moving focus in Camera Connect and then taking a shot,
then repeating that. It works. But automatic, also with exposure bracketing etc. would be very
welcome.

Cheers Brian

Analyzing where Canon lags behind in the market - Share your thoughts

Where does Canon fall behind the competition?

Can we make a list of that, that's completely objective and is neither fanboyish nor Sony-is-king-ish?

This list I want to make is comprehensive, meaning starts from the lowest end up to the highest end. And is divided into two sections, Bodies and Lenses.

Only where the current Canon models are inferior to an existing competitor.

I'll start with the very low end failure:

-Canon's cheapest DSLR is very poorly featured compared to Nikon's and Sony's and practically everything else.

It's the 1300D. Nikon makes a MUCH more compelling camera to draw the first SLR buyer. Their Nikon D3400 has:

-24mp class leading sensor vs the old 550D 18mp sensor with immensely lower image quality.

-Little known fact, the 24mp sensor in the D3400 up to D7200 produces very sharp HD video with no aliasing and moire. While the 1300D has moire and aliasing and softness.

-Snapbridge blutooth connectivity is very fast and very appealing to today's teen/social media oriented market.

-The 1300D has the lowest screen resolution in the current world of SLRs.

-The 1300D comes with the old 18-55mm non-STM lens while the Nikon comes with the newest STM like model.

-The 1300D is 3fps vs 5fps

-Aside from poor video, tops at 1080p 30p while d3400 does sharp 1080p 60p.

-Much lower end AF system

This camera model just needs to be erased or upgraded fast. Cann doesn't realize it's the entry point of the customer, and now on the shelf there's a much superior nikon.

1- So Canon's first fail is in their first Body, the T6/1300D.

There is no failing DSLR that I can think of rather than this. Given that 6D is a different line from d750 and is an old release. All Canon bodies from the 750D to 1DxII arw competitive.

_______________________________________________________

2- 50mm and 85mm lenses.

Canon were always said to be bought for their superior lenses but now, two of the most important key lenses for photography are surpassed by other manufacturers. Leaving the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.2 L two over-priced and low quality lenses. (This is in relation to Sigma ART lenses and Sony Batis lenses, etc)

2- Second current Canon fail is two lenses: 50mm and 85mm primes.

__________________________________________________

3- Third failure is the lack of interest in video. For example, all Canon DSLRs starting from a t6 to 80D have horrible moire/aliased soft video by today's nikon and Sony standards. Their lack of interest and fail also comes in the form of Sony A6300 to A7sII cameras which have superior video quality and video features and Even Nikon D3400 to D7200 superior HD (This Canon fail does not include the 1DxII, 1DC which are a different class or 5DIV which is yet to be tested. Everything below that shooting video with a Sony will give you better detail and more aggressive video features like S-Log and peaking and EVFs and if you want to retain canon's pleasing Colours/motion then shooting on Nikons is much better for anything below 5D4. They also make pretty images SOOC)

__________________________________________________

I know the market really well and shot a lot of these cameras and lenses and see that:

Canon, when analyzed generally (as is whole models not small features) are failing and vastly behind the competition in:

1- Entry Level SLR. T6/1300D
2- 50mm prime and 85mm prime lenses
3- Overall video quality & features

What do you have to add?

Remember, this is not a camera vs camera debate, just a general zoomed out look of where Canon is behind in the competing market.

-Wedding FF camera with tilty/swivly screen?

Might be a fail vs the D750 but will leave that to you guys. Remember this is not ''what I want from Canon'', it's where are they failing behind rivals?

With the upcoming 6D Mk II likely having some sort of 4K support, Canon's whole contemporary FF lineup will have 4K soon. This raises the question: which Canon APS-C body is the first to get 4K? The 80D most likely won't have a successor anytime soon; the 7D II just might but probably not within one year. The Rebel line, with its shorter release cycle, is up for a replacement for the 750D/760D fairly soon, possibly in the first half of 2017. Could the 800D be the first?

5D Mark IV vs 5D Mark III Noise & DR Comparison.

Dear friends,

searching for more real data in order to decide between 5D Mk4 and 1Dx Mk2, i just came across a 20min "fresh" video, shot by a real estate photographer called Brendon Pinola, which demonstrates the differences between the two cameras, shot at ISO 1000.
The real world, unscientific review shows, to my opinion, what i was quite sure of; apart from the relative lack of banding on Mk4, there is almost NO difference between the two cameras! To be honest, in terms of noise, 5d Mk4 seems slightly worse than 5D Mk3 on my scientifically calibrated 27" EIZO Pro monitor.

Feel free to come to your own conclusion, here is the link to the video:

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Talk [CR1]

HTML:
<p>There has been a bit of chatter since the EOS 5D Mark IV announcement about the upcoming Canon EOS 6D Mark II. We’re told to expect the camera in the first half of 2017, with CP+ in February being a strong possibility for an announcement. We’re told the new camera is going to be 25mp (prototypes exist), have an articulating screen, dual SD card slots and shoot some form of 4K. I’d assume DPAF is also going to be included in the camera. Also expect some weight savings and a slightly smaller size.</p>
<p>This is [CR1], so treat it accordingly.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>
<span id="pty_trigger"></span>

How many people think that their 5D Mark IV images are soft?

I have a 5D3, 5dsr, and a 5D Mark IV. I dont know if I just got used to my 5dsr more or that my 5d mark IV just has soft images. I don't remember images being this soft with my 5d3. I am seeing quite a few people saying this. Now I am one of them after owning the camera for a couple of weeks. Some images are really sharp but a lot of them seem softer than the sharp ones. I only use manual mode, turned down NR, and use single focus point focusing.
