Review: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV by DPReview

HTML:
The indepth reviews of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV seem to be coming out fairly quickly. It’s a bit surprising to see DPReview has completed theirs already, but that may just come down to the popularity of the EOS 5D line of DSLRs.</p>
<p>For the most part, DPReview loves the new EOS 5D Mark IV and thinks it’s a worthwhile upgrade over the EOS 5D Mark III and definitely the EOS 5D Mark II.</p>
<blockquote><p><a href="https://youtu.be/9FqX6qblyJ8" target="_blank">We said in our overview video</a> for the 5D Mark IV that this is the most refined 5D yet, and we believe that still stands. This is a camera that will stand up to years of abuse and churn out images with appreciably better quality (and at a faster rate) than its predecessor. The touch screen and Dual Pixel AF offer users more shooting options, and the built-in Wi-Fi and NFC will be an important addition to those working in the field. It may not be a<em>revolutionary</em> update, but this <em>evolutionary</em> update will find its way into the hands of thousands of working professionals, and it will reward them with better and more reliable results than ever before. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-5d-mark-iv">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Review: Real World Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

HTML:
<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rmP0Xnhkxw4" width="728" height="409" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>Jared Polin from <a href="http://froknowsphoto.com/canon-5d-mark-iv-real-world-review/">FroKnowsPhoto</a> has completed his real world review of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, it’s an hour long video and worth a watch. Jared touches on Dual Pixel RAW and didn’t come away a big fan of the concept in its current form, however we may see some great advancements with this sort of technology in the future.</p>
<p><strong>On Dual Pixel RAW:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>In theory this sounds like a fascinating technology, being able to shift your focus after the picture is taken. In reality it’s not there just yet. You do have the ability to shift focus and bokeh but it’s truly micro. When I say micro, the adjustments are so subtle that at times you will have a little trouble seeing something actually happen. So in the end, cool tech but not something I am going to switch into often, if ever.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>On ISO Performance:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>How does the ISO compare to the 5D Mark III? The files are cleaner at higher ISO’s, which it better be. Is it far better and worth the upgrade? It’s better. Any time you can get cleaner high ISO shots it’s worth it in my opinion.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Worth the upgrade?</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>I think this is a great general camera for those who consider themselves to be a photographer who also shoots video. Or if you’re a filmmaker on a budget and can’t drop $16,000 on a camera, I think the Mark IV is for you. Let me remind you that people will point out how other companies have better specs or do this or that better. I’m not going to deny that in some cases, but for a well-rounded dual purpose camera, you can’t go wrong with the Mark IV. <a href="http://froknowsphoto.com/canon-5d-mark-iv-real-world-review/">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Where in Lake Tahoe is this photo taken

Hi,

I did a quick google search on Lake Tahoe, and this one photo popped up in the result. I have been to Tahoe several times and every time there is something new one can discover. I do not recall ever visiting this location in Tahoe. This photo reminds me of Banff, Alberta, Canada. Can anybody tell me if this indeed a location in Tahoe and if this specific area has a name that I can use to search for more information about this place? I could not find out who the photographer of this particular shot is.

This was posted in this site too as Tahoe: http://worldoflakes.com/lake-tahoe-2/

I have not done a thorough side by side comparison, but just by looking at it, it looks like the location in Banff National Park. Correct me if I am wrong.

BG-E20 grip for the 5D4

Just got my new BG-E20 for my 5D4 and thought I'd answer some questions that people had.

First, regarding the 5D3, the respective battery grips are not interchangeable. The BG-E11 will NOT fit the new 5D4.

Second, the BG-E20 does not include an AA battery tray like the BG-E11.

Third, the BG-E20 is weather sealed. There are rubber gaskets around the side of battery tray and around the base of the piece that goes up inside the camera.

Fourth, the BGM-E20L battery tray is a complete redesign over the BG-E11. For instance, on the BG-E11, the battery fits into a socket and mates with terminals on the tray. The tray terminals are routed to the front side of the tray where they contact terminals inside the grip. Not so with the BG-E20. The new tray holds the batteries, leaving the battery terminals exposed through holes in the bottom of the tray. This allows the battery contacts to mate directly with the contacts inside the grip.

The BG-E20 feels more substantial, it feels slightly heavier and less plasticky than the BG-E11. Tapping on the bottom of the empty BG-E11 produces a hollow sound, the BG-E20 is more dampened and "solid" sounding.

The BG-E20 also has a white "Canon" logo on the front.

All in all, the BG-E20 seems more robust with its weather sealing and solid build quality.

First Shooting Experience with EOS 5D MkIV

When I got mine on Sept. 8th I immediately took it out for a first shooting experience. Additionally I did a couple of 100 shots at a friends birthday. And I made some more technical shots as well.My finding is: Wow! Canon did a great Job to improve from 5DMkIII which I use since March 31st 2012.... What are the key topics for me - in comparison between Mk III and Mk IV:
  • Dynamic in the photos... The images are astonishingly rich of details in the shadows - already visible when you look at the camera back.
  • Shutter "shock": This is really low or close to not there: Which I feel great. It allows you to handhold maybe one stop longer....
  • Live View shooting with the touch screen: this has blown me away. The level of performance is close to the newest generation of Panasonic mirrorless cameras. Which is the benchmark for me - and not Sony: Wow! It is really fun to work with it f.i. in street photography as well.
  • It looks as it the ISO range is really extended, at least one stop minimum
  • Panning with live view is just awesome!
  • Another topic is the Autofocus with all sensor points @ f8. But there is one thing more: In Live View the AutoFocus is working even with f11, f.i. with the EF 100-400mm IS and the Extender 2x MkIII
More I could not investigate more deeply in the short time. I published some of the findings together with some images here: http://bit.ly/2ct4Oso

More to come....

50mm vs 85mm on FF for portraits & group portraits?

I moved up from Canon 7DMKII to a Canon 5DMKIV. On my 7D I used the Canon 35 1.4 L II which I LOVED; portraits and group portraits came out really well. Now, on the 5D, it's so wide and if I get closer there's distortion.

I need to replace this lens with either a 50 or 85 for the two types of shots. Never used either on FF. I'd rent but it's so much money to do so. What is recommended for the two types of photos?

18-55mm II repair

Hi.

When I upgraded to my 6D and mid primes my wife inherited my old 30D and 18-55 kit lens.

The other day it started throwing error 99.

I problem solved it back to the aperture motion of the lens.

it feels like a loose cable as the problem is intermittent (80% failure 20% ok). I've cleaned all the contacts and there's no improvement, but my primes work fine on the 30D. Using the aperture preview button you can see sometimes it doesn't stop down.

So I'm going to dive in and check all the wiring and make sure it's all doing what it should be.. but before I pull the thing apart I thought I'd see if anyone has been there before me, anything to watch out for? I have googled and the aperture failure is not unknown, but there's not much out there that I could find, presumably most people just write the lens off when it goes wrong.

FTR I paid £50 for it 5 years ago, second hand.

1DX2 CF and Cfast Lightroom Duplicates?

Hi all, I have 1DX Mark 2, I have a small issue where when both cards are installed in the camera (CF and Cfast) and I am recording RAW to just one of them lightroom 6.6.1 import shows two of each image on the one card? If you remove the second card and import again it only shows one? Checking the cards on other systems shows only the one image as it should? Seems that LR seems duplicate the image (same filename etc) when both cards are installed, does not seem to matter what card is set as default it always shows duplicates when two card are installed in the camera.

Mac OS 10.11.6
1DX Mk2 firmware 1.1.2
LR 6.6.1

Anyone have the same camera want to test, thing is I only just get the Cfast card as part of the offer so would never have known prior to running both cards.

Arthur

Initial thoughts on the 5D4 after some use

First impressions:

1 - F/8 autofocus is confident in good light. I now run the 5D4 by default with the 100-400 II + the 1.4 TC III, and it locks sharply. I have not tried this yet with birds in flight circumstances, but it works very well with crazy children hopped up on birthday party sugar and car license plates coming and going at 50 mph. I was frankly surprised, as the f/8 center focus point on the 1DX was a bit worse than this.
2 - 30 megapixels matters. The people who were convinced that 20 mp was a point where you'd find a diminishing rate of returns were - for my type of shooting - incorrect.
3 - The autofocus is a league better than the 5D3. I feel it is more confident than the 1DX Mark I. The increased distance between the lowest and highest focus points is appreciable.
4 - There are lots of little easter eggs in the menus, with little improvements having been made here and there. Perhaps these were already in the 5DS series, and I never got the memo, but they weren't there in the 1DX, 5D3 or 7D2.
5 - The shutter feels much, much better than the 5D3, which clacked. Silent mode is optimistically titled, but not the joke it was with the 5D3 or 1DX.
6 - The build quality feels more solid than the 5D3 or 7D2. Saint Roger revealed why with his teardown (interlocking doohickies). But it is noticeably lighter too. I also perceive that the matte finish is more matte, with a real frictive feel to the hands.
7 - The new, customizable Q menu is pretty handy.
8 - 7 frames per second seems slow, now that the 5D4 is arguably a pretty good wildlife body, this is its weakness.

Caught this broad wing hawk on a wire near my house this afternoon. This is roughly a 1-to-1 crop of a JPG (can't abide Canon's DPP software, so waiting for Adobe before going back to RAW) from the 100-400 II at 400 with the 1.4TC III at f/8. No post production...

Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 Sport vs. 400 f/2.8L IS Mark I

Hey all,

Long story short: I need a long, fast lens both for horse shows and classical music concerts (where it's dark, but I can't close to the stage). I'm between the Sigma 120-300 Sport and the first version of 400L IS. Has anyone used both or even just one and have an opinion? The weight of the 400 does not bother me, though I'm wondering if I'll miss the versatility of a zoom. Thanks!

Is This The Canon EOS M5 Pricing? [CR1]

HTML:
A member over at the <a href="http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=244&t=4918376">mobile01.com forum</a> claims this is the pricing for the soon-to-be-announced Canon EOS M5. What’s interesting is there appears to be a $100 discount if you preorder the body only, or with the 15-45mm IS STM kit lens. The brand new EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit doesn’t get the same preorder discount.</p>
<p class="p1">We cannot confirm the reported pricing at this time.</p>
