Canon launches the DYOC Program

CRguy apparently missed an important announcement, so I'm reposting the press release from Canon USA. This is a biggie, it should end forum whining forever.

Canon Officially Launches the Design Your Own Camera Program

MELVILLE, N.Y., April August 1, 2024 — Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today launched a new program for professional and amateur photographers intended to ensure they can achieve the results they need. The Design Your Own Camera (DYOC) Program enables Canon customers to specify the exact features they want in a camera, and Canon will build that camera to their specifications, specifically for them. Earlier this year, Canon Inc. celebrated that the company's interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 21 consecutive years from 2003 to 2023. Despite that, it is clear that certain individuals understand the camera market better than Canon and those individuals deserve to have their needs addressed.

DYOC is “Ahead of the Game”
Canon’s DYOC Program will enable users to select from a wide menu of available features to meet their needs. Importantly, the DYOC Program will enable users exclude features they don't want, such as video recording capability that we have recently come to understand adds to the cost of cameras. Some of the key features that can be selected in the DYOC Program include:
  • Sensor size and resolution ranging from 1" (to make lens focal length longer) to medium format* and 2 MP to 100 MP
  • Still-image shooting speeds up to 100fps
  • Strong video capabilities up to 12K RAW, or no video options installed
  • Single or dual card slots with any combination of SD, CF, CF Express Type B, or 3.5" floppy disk media†
  • No grip or integrated grip in regular and extra-large sizes
  • Mode dial or mode selection button
  • Battery Pack LP-E17, LP-E6Q or LP-E19N
  • Modern or retro body styling
DYOC helps users “Master the Moment”
"Whether a user needs a stills-oriented ultra-high resolution camera, a hybrid camera delivering top quality 12K video with Canon Log 4, or a 2 megapixel camera with a Hello Kitty™-shaped shutter button, our new DYOC program will provide exactly what the user needs. Even though we have led the camera market for 21 years, we recognize that individual users understand the needs of the camera market much better than we do, so we developed the DYOC program just for them," said Go Tokura, head of Canon's Imaging Division.

Price and Availability
Cameras produced through Canon's DYOC Program are expected to be available in the Fall of 2024 and will ship on the 6th Tuesday of each month. The estimated retail price of each camera will depend on the features specified by the user, but in no case will the estimated retail cost be affordable by the user.

For more information, please visit www.usa.canon.com.

* Medium format sensors are only compatible with the RF 28-70mm f/2L USM and TS-E lenses when used with the Canon EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.
† Use of 3.5" floppy disk media requires selection of the extra-large integrated grip option.

Canon Patent Application: Telephoto Macro Lenses

If there's one thing I've heard mention quite a bit is people's wish for a long focal length macro lens. In this patent application (2024-103311), Canon is exploring just that. I haven't seen many patent applications in this category, so maybe it's a sign of good things to come. According to Canon; In optical systems

Will the new R5 II de-squeeze anamorphic lenses...for Stills? Video?

Hello all,

Well, I've been saving my pennies for years now, and think the R52 will be where I drop it....I love to use mirrorless cameras to mount odd lenses, from vintage old lenses to the great affordable anamorphic modern lenses coming out today.

With mirrorless, it is SO easy to adapt anything...

When shooting with an anamorphic lens, unless your EVF can de-squeeze the image (let you dial in the factor)...it is a little difficult to focus, even with the focus assist going for you.

Has there been any indication that the new Canon R52 will have the ability to de-squeeze and let you see the resultant image in the EVF or even the flippy display?

I'm not only interested in video...but also for STILLS!! I love to shoot panoramic images and the anamporphic look is right up my alley for stills.

I know some other cameras do it and if Canon does...well, it shouldn't be rocket surgery to have the code in the camera to de-squeeze an image, let you dial in the factor and boom...?

Has there been any indication this will be a think with the R52?

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Canon Patent Application: Let’s go long

In this patent application (2024-101302), Canon discusses some unique telephoto lenses. Most of the lenses in here would be eye-watering priced, so hold onto your credit cards. Just in case. The primary purpose of this patent application is to explore designs that are reduced in size and weight for the given large aperture. According to

Canon Patent Application: Interesting Ultrawides

This patent application (2024-101645) has a bunch of embodiments, allowing us to frame some observations about optical designs that we occasionally see here. It seems very likely that the first embodiment in this patent application is the RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM. In short, if this is correct – I was wrong. Yes, we need

Big question of af center point, and tracking subjects ON! Bug or is really how works???

Hello people, well I already have the eos r7 and it is fantastic, I am trying things, watching tutorials for BBF etc etc... but I have seen several videos that there is a problem with the autofocus system when you choose a central focus point, for example, you enable servo and enable subject tracking...The autofocus system configured like this DOES NOT respect the central point or flexible zone for example or a larger square...the focus points in blue appear outside the focus box... (in this case the central point) and it does what it wants... it detects other things it focuses on other things that are around... but it ignores that I only want it to focus on the central point... is this a bug? Or is it really like that?...If I deactivate the tracking then if it respects the central focus point, I can move it wherever I want and it will focus only on that point and nothing else! ....In this video he explains this problem... has anyone else seen it?

So the question is that it is better to configure for birds... that you want to catch the eye but with only a central focus point and that the focus does not go to crazy or go crazy? I think it only happens in Servo...in one shoot it respects the central point or the one I configure...but in servo and tracking activated any point or focus area that I limit the camera does not respect that limit and focuses many times. sometimes outside the limits of the focus box and that is wrong... Any clarification or suggestion for R7 owners? Any custom buttons for focus and tracking or several that you have that work well for you? Thank you all very much.

Problem with stack (in camera) EOS R7

Hi people, well enjoying the eos after selling the eos 90d... But there is something that puzzles me... today I wanted to try focus stacking (directly in camera) or in other words try to do focus bracketing and then have the camera stack it in a single image... but it fails all the time... sometimes it tells me that dof is too out of focus or to increase the aperture value, other times it tells me "(the composition stopped. The whole scene is flat and monotonous)" I don't understand anything... why does it tell me that?? Is it a fault? or do I really have to frame something very complex for it to stack? the sequence of photos is done perfectly... but it doesn't stack in camera... What am I doing wrong? Any recommendations or adjustments to get it to stack??? thanks! I attached a photo of the problem...

How good is the EL100?

I kept my 90EX when I sold my 6D and got an R8 but on my first trip with the R8, the results for shots with the 90 were not pleasant mainly because there's no bounce or swivel. I have an 430 EXII which can swivel but even though it's not all that huge, I want something that can easily go in a pocket when not in use. Is the EL100 a good choice?

R5 13/14 bit files

I am sure I have read somewhere in the R5 manual that when using high speed mode (H+) or the electronic shutter that the file bit depth reduces from 14 to 13. Surely this must affect the dynamic range. I only shoot in raw.
Does anybody know if this is the case with the R5 MKII, or does it use 14 bit files for all shooting modes.

Canon EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II and CF-R20EP Short Supply Notice

Perhaps not something that should surprise anyone (thanks for the heads up P-Visie), Canon has issued a notice that everything once again is in short supply and will take some time to catch up to preorders. Now some of this could be people preordering from multiple different suppliers seeing which one gets processed first (I
