5D4 Dual-Pixel RAW Image Microadjust comparison to AFMA posted at DPR

https://www.dpreview.com/news/1177471835/testing-image-microadjust-on-the-canon-5d-mark-iv

Interesting -- I'm sure we could pick apart the methods (it is DPR after all), but they've pushed the limits of the Dual-Pixel RAW Image Microadjustment up against good ol' fashioned AFMA to scale the amount of focus correction possible in post with DP RAW. I'll give them credit, it's a simple and clever way to frame this up without just handing us a gallery of pre-/post-correction shots.

"However, the degree of correction we're seeing is so small (on the order of -2 to +2 in terms of traditional AF microadjustment) that we wonder whether it's worth the effort of incorporating DPP into your workflow, especially given its slow performance even on a fast computer. Or the doubling in file size."

They completely drive past the stories this week that Adobe will just directly bolt this functionality into their much-more-widely-used traditional LR / ACR tools, but here's their rough swag for the scale of what you can do with focus in post.

Time Lapse Sequences with the Canon EOS 5DS/R, but not in-camera?

Hi,
I´m aware that the 5Ds/R has an 1) Intervalometer and also a 2) Time Lapse Movie function in order to produce Time Lapse in-camera.
I´m also aware that the process produces a movie at 1080p resolution using the ALL-I codec at 29.97 fps (NTSC) or 25 fps (PAL), in-camera.
"These will be highly compressed with much less latitude than the still image option. The file resolution differences are astounding at 50MP versus 2MP", as far as I could read.

Is it possible to take the images out of the camera and produce the final movie in a computer (which application works best for Mac?) using the 50MP stills and keep all the information?

In terms of size of the final movie (K) what "K" are we talking about here based on FULL RAW mode 50MP stills, the MRAW mode with 28MP stills and the SRAW 12MP, of that camera?

Thank you.

5D Mark IV HDMI 1.3 port ...what?

Fresh from the the twitter channel:

"@CanonProNetwork Why no 4K over HDMI out? Why HMDI 1.3? Why the huge crop factor? Why that old codec? Why UHS I? #5DMarkIV #AskCanon"

Their reply on twitter:
"@xxx @xxx the 5D IV only has a Full HD hdmi output as HDMI 1.3 chips only where available during the design phase"

Locking at the release dates on wikipedia (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Definition_Multimedia_Interface), the HDMI 1.3 came out in 2006, HDMI 1.4 came out in 2009. Even the 1.4b is out already out since 2011

I am a bit shocked now.

Tamron to Announce 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2

HTML:
<p>It’s being reported that Tamron will be announcing an SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 ahead of Photokina. The lens will be compatible with Canon & Nikon mounts, as well as a non-VC version for Sony. We’re not sure if this would be an update to the current version or an addition to the Tamron lineup.</p>
<p><em>There’s probably more to come from Tamron.</em></p>

Canon Develops Global Shutter-Equipped CMOS Sensor

HTML:
<strong>TOKYO, August 31, 2016</strong>—Canon Inc. today announced that it has developed a new CMOS sensor equipped with a global shutter function that, because it exposes all of the sensor’s pixels at the same time, enables the capture of distortion-free images even when shooting fast-moving objects. Employing a new signal-readout drive system and new pixel structure that significantly expands the full well capacity and reduces noise, the sensor contributes to high-image-quality video capture by making possible the realization of a wide dynamic range.</p>
<p><strong>Distortion-free image capture when shooting fast-moving objects

</strong>Standard CMOS sensors make use of the rolling shutter method, which sequentially exposes the pixels one row at a time. Because rolling shutters can create slight discrepancies in signal-readout timing depending on the location of the pixel, images of fast-moving objects may appear distorted and flash photography may result in the occurrence of the flash band phenomenon, in which the upper and lower portions of images display different levels of brightness. Because Canon’s newly developed CMOS sensor employs a global shutter; when shooting such fast-moving objects as a rotating propeller or a speeding train, subjects are able to retain their proper form to create distortion-free images. Enabling the confirmation of object shapes with a high degree of accuracy, the sensor offers potential benefits in industrial applications, including as a sensor for use in inspection cameras.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Wide dynamic range realized through new proprietary drive method and pixel structure

</strong>When the newly developed CMOS sensor converts light into electrical signals and stores the signal charge in memory, the new drive system achieves a significant expansion in full well capacity. Also, because it employs a structure that efficiently captures light and each pixel incorporates an optimized internal configuration, the sensor makes possible increased sensitivity with reduced noise. The expanded full well capacity, realized through the sensor’s new drive system, and substantial reduction in noise, enabled by the new pixel structure, combine to deliver a wide dynamic range, facilitating the capture of high-image-quality, high-definition footage even when shooting scenes containing large variances in brightness.</p>
<p>Canon will explore various industrial and measurement applications for the newly developed CMOS sensor and consider deploying it in the field of video production for cinema production applications, TV dramas, commercials and more.</p>

Well, I injured my EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II

In another month or so I'll be able to get out and shoot again. Physical therapy is almost over with and I am feeling strong.

Today I was going through my gear and making sure my lenses were clean. As I was checking my 70-200 I dropped it about 3 feet and the front element got scratched. :'( Nothing else seems wrong at this point.

The scratches don't seem to affect the photo quality, but it still sucks to see those there. I'm also wondering whether it may have decentered the elements inside.

Fortunately, I did buy the New Leaf 5 year protection with drops and spills through Adorama. Normally I do not buy extended warranties, but since this was an expensive purchase with a decent probability of dropping I paid the $109.

I'm probably going to send the lens in, but I'd like to hear from anyone else who has used the New Leaf drops and spills warranty. Were you satisfied?

I do not have renter's insurance and there is no deductible on the New Leaf policy.

While it would not have helped in this case, I think I am a new believer in putting a clear glass filter on for front element protection.

Thanks guys!

A bunch of Travel advice needed!

My girlfriend and I will be traveling for 6 months this coming spring and here are my questions/concerns:

1. I have a 5d mark iii which I love, but since this is a once in a life time trip, I'm wondering if an upgrade to the 5DSR would be worth it. It'd be nice to come home and blow up huge prints to put on my walls and hopefully host an exhibit of my work around town. Or I guess I could go with the new 5D4. Any thoughts? I'll be doing mostly landscapes.

2. I'm gonna be carrying roughly $15,000 in my bag so is there any kind of world travel insurance that could cover me if my gear was stolen? I'm thinking of buying a tracking device and sewing it somewhere hidden into my bag. I really hate that my big as tripod gives me away.

3. Should I buy some kind of major cloud service so I can just dump everything I take onto their site so I don't have to worry about losing my photos at some point?

any input would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Concert Goers - No Professional Camera - What does that mean???

I'm attending a concert tonight at a state fair. We plan to hang out at the fair for a few hours first. I really want to bring a camera along even just to snap some shots at the fair. The concert I'm attending allows cameras, as long as they are not "professional". I know sometimes interchangeable lenses can be a sticking point.

Do you think I'll have any issue with an M + 22mm pancake?
(original M 1)

I called and asked for clarification and I was told it's up to the discretion of the individual security guard. It sounded like generally large ILC systems were banned (thinking DSLR). There is no camera check, no lockers and I we plan on taking a bus to the fair. Soooo I'd hate to be told I can't bring it in but have no place to store/stash it while I attend the show.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Can you tell the difference between 5D footage and others?

Hey guys!
Been a while since I posted here ahaha but recently made this end-of-summer sorta video lip syncing to the song "Can't Stop the Feeling" by JT :) I wanted to show different places around my city and the world, but couldn't physically be there sometimes (obviously!) or just didn't have my camera with me.

So, in the end, I'd say 70-80% of the shots were taken with the 5D - but can you tell which shots weren't?! :D Some were on an X100, some a Sony A6000 I believe... and an iPhone of course!
Let me know if you can spot them! Not many of my friends could :P

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbDRQKtMJGc&feature=youtu.be

My point being, we sometimes don't needa have the latest and greatest tech to make a decent video! Hope you enjoyed the video and had a nice summer!

Arrival of Canon 24-105 f/4 IS USM II

On August 26th, I pre-ordered this lens (€1279). Altough it reads that this lens may be delivered by the end of October, the camera dealer believes that the lens will be available beginning of September when the first 5D MK IV's are delivered. According to the camera dealer this is due to the fact that this lens is also part of the kit.

What do you think? Or, what did you hear from your dealer?

I am eager to get my hands on this lens. I really want to find out which items of this lens in term of image quality really improved compared to the older model.

Canon XC15 Images Leak Out Ahead of Launch

New idea for 100mm filter holders

Saw this on Petapixel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=m6sKa4C0QiE

Seems super gadgety and I wonder if we'll be shoe-horned into their filters to work best with this (especially the CPL adjuster). And using wood in the design does not inspire confidence that this will be cheap, and stacking all these 'vaults' and sleeves has me (as always) wondering how they have solved geometry as it pertains to UWA shooting without vignetting.

5D Mark IV dual pixel raw sample available from Imaging Resource

Hi,

you can check a first dual pixel raw file here:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-5d-iv/E5D4hSLI000100DPRaw_FINE.CR2.HTM

As you can see below, there is a 4th TIFF IFD, instead of just 3.
https://twitter.com/lorenzo2472
IFDs #3 and #4 contains RAW data.

If you have mraw and sraw from this body, please share with me, to help document the .CR2 file format.

Kind regards,

Laurent

bodycount...

Now with my beloved EOS 5D3 having apoplexia after salt water immersion in the Indian Ocean the question of a replacement bod has arisen. I still have my Sony A6000 and I am learning it. Also, the 35mm f/1.8 lens brings up the edge that was not visible while I was only shooling with the Zony Zoom.

But to the Canon body.
First things first. Maybe it is possible to fix it good and maybe it will perform reliably after it has been properly diagnosed and the faulty parts changed. Maybe.

But if not.
My visit to eBay revealed that the 5DII is seriously overpriced still and that the 5DIII are few and far apart.
I have found a 5DIII at 1500 euros/1900dollars second hand and I am going to se it tomorrow.
This would probably be the most logical backup for the drowned and probably not 100% reliable 5DIII which only has 13000 clicks on its shutter.

yeah, this seems like the way to go but meanwhile I got other thoughts.
The 5D IV was launched. Focusing system revised, new sensor, touch screen (I hate touch screens!) 4K cropped video and so many bells and whistles that it will take a couple more readings to figure out what this camera really is.

5DS is selling at 2500 dollars with all its megapixels and high definition. According to Tony Northup you get Nikon 810 quality after a couple of clicks on Lightroom. the full resolution images are huge and my computer will dramatically slow down with the 50MB files.

5DsR is selling at 2800 dollars. It is more expensive because...I don't know exactly why. NOT having the anti-alias filter should make a camera cheaper in my logic but no.

I do portraits and sceneries. No sports, no weddings hardly any video.
I cannot stand things that black out in the middle of something. I hate it when something expensive just does not work...yes, I am talking about Sony A6000/Metabones/Canon EF lenses...

Would a Sony A7RII with the Metabones IV be an option here? I break stuff that just does not work...

Please give your opinions.
As things are now, I'll go and grab the 1500 euro 5D3 if it has a reasonable shutter count, less than 100 000.
Yes, I have the software on my Mac to get the count directly from the body, thank you.

What would Je..you do?
