What is this bird?

This bird has been hanging out in the trees across the street from my house (In New York), can anyone tell me what it is? I've never photographed birds before, but this guy is pretty cool (especially when soaring around), and is making me want to go out any get a longer lens!

Today I saw him fly by with a full squirrel, then land in a nearby tree and chow down for about an hour!

<p>Samyang announced on their Facebook page that they will be announcing a new lens on March 21, 2014.</p>
<p>It’s suggested by a few people that this will be Samyang’s first foray into autofocus and it will appear on a prime lens and not a zoom.</p>

Evolution or the murder of art?

Disclaimer: This post is totally and utterly speculation and not based on actual developer announcements.

If the burst/frame count of cameras one day reaches and potentially exceeds 24 frames per second and photography possibly becomes an exercise of selecting frames from what is essentially a video reel, how would YOU, as a photographic artist feel about that?

I have a feeling that this advancement may initially raise it's head in camera phones for some strange reason.

Quite interested to hear opinions on this

What do you know about squid?!

CR has helped me to learn a lot. I did not know before I joined for example that lasers can destroy a sensor, nor did I know that taking pics at the Holi Festival in India could be problematic due to the size of the powder molecules (or something).

But what about squid?! I realise falling off a boat with all my gear is a very bad idea, but does anyone know whether squid ink can cause any serious issues with lenses or camera bodies (1D X)?

Most of my job is fun, and this is likely to be too, but I know very well that cameras, boats and live animals, are always a risky mix.

I will be out on a fishing trip where the guys will be using traditional limes to pull in the squid. I will be on the boat (I guess). There is a risk of squid ink, squid attack and squid water, along with the obvious falling overboard.

Any advice?

Thank you.

Has Sigma announced plans for a 50mm "Art" lens?

I saw the recent rumor (CR1) of a Canon 50mm IS f1.8 or 2.0. While I'm sure this will be a great lens for many people, I have no need for IS at 50mm (as I mostly shoot pictures of my daughter, who never stops moving) and I'm more interested in a wider aperture. I've owned two copies of the 50L and had a love/hate relationship with it. What I'm really looking for is a 50/1.4 or 50/1.2 that is sharp wide open, focuses accurately, and has great color/contrast. In other words, I want the Sigma 35/1.4 version of a 50mm lens, and it seems Sigma would again be the company to do it.

Have they announced any intention to do so?

1DX Won't Power On

First the defective mirror box assembly, then We had to send our new cameras in for the 'fix' which was nothing ore than a Band-Aid via lubrication- now camera won't even power on, and apparently it has to do with their 'fix', either that or the 1DX is prone ot power problems right from the get go-

Lemon Law?

Photographyonthenet site has a thread called "1DX will not turn on... unless..." in which several 1DX owners are having the same issue as I'm having- mainly that our cameras have stopped working- stopped powering on after we've sent our cameras in for their 'mirror box assembly lubrication fix'.

Now my camera is 2 months out of warranty, the stinking camera has stopped working completely- I've tried removing and reseating the battery, tried another battery, reseating several times- nothing!

Now I have to spend even more money just to get my $7000 1 year old camera to work? Swell-

Any other 1DX owners noticing any power issues? My camera began by mysteriously shutting off when reviewing photos in the LCD- I'd scroll to a photo, look at it, and like 4 or so seconds later, the camera would just turn off (without actually turning off the power switch-) nothing would work- I'd have to reach down and physically turn off the power switch, and turn it back on again- and the camera would work for awhile- a few days or so, then it would happen again-

Well today, the camera completely quit working. I got it to work one more time by reseating the battery, but it took one more photo- then it crapped the bad completely and won't turn on no matter what now-

This post is kind of a rant, but it's also a heads-up to other Canon !DX owners who have sent their cameras in for 'the fix' for the product service announcement back awhile ago regarding the mirror box assembly- Not saying your camera will die like ours did, but if you begin noticing weird power issues like I described, it could be an indication that your camera is going to die in near future and need to be sent in for expensive repairs-

Thinking about this but wanting your thoughts....

Hi There,

First time poster but been following for a little while now.

A little background, I've been an amateur photographer for a number of years now, first starting off with a 550d with the 18-55 and 55-250 kit lens which to me was a great starting point but then ended getting a 50mm 1.8 and 28 2.8 and getting good results when photographing my many fish tanks and reasonable results with cross country riding with the 55-250 in very good weather. Last year I ended up selling all the camera and the 2 kit lenses and purchasing the 70d and 18-135 STM lens. I mainly did this for the video and as a plus side, the photos were turning out better both on my primes for the fish and the 18-135 wasn't that bad at the sports side.

Now the thing I miss about my 1st setup was the reach of the 250 EF-S. The lens itself wasn't brilliant but I want to have something that range and the possibility of a little more reach if needed for wildlife. I was planning on going for the 100-400 replacement but this doesn't seem to be happening.... much to my announce.

So canon have kindly introduced a cashback offer for the 70-200 2.8 II with £210 off which got me thinking.

Not sure if I should go for this to use for everyday shouting (out and about/sports etc) giving me 112-320 on my 70d or do i wait for the 100-400 replacement?

If you advise to go for the 70-200mm II then what's the compatibility with teleconverters between this and the 70d? Its a dark art that I simply don't understand and get confused about but I was wondering if that could be my solution to get some extra reach.

Cheers
Stu

EW-88C Tulip Lens Hood for EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens POOR DESIGN & QUALITY

Has anyone had problems with the lens hood to a 24-70 F2.8L II falling off? Purchased one from B&H which arrived Friday and used it once so far and what a mistake!

I ordered the EW-88C Lens Hood for my 24 - 70mm f2.8 II Canon lens and I am shocked at how poorly this hood fits my lens. While shooting a basketball game it fell off twice. And while walking in a hallway...it also fell off. The "release button" might suggest, that like the hood on my 70 - 200, that it locks the hood to the lens. NOT SO in this case. When you twist it on it easily twists off without depressing the "release button". My only solution now seems to be to tape it onto my lens when shooting. Any thoughts?

<p>I have finally purchased the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/850101-REG/Zeiss_1964831_Distagon_T_15mm_f_2_8.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm f/2.8</a> and will be putting it through paces on a two week trip to Namibia beginning on April 6. For filters, I’ll be using the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/909610-REG/Sigma_afj960_95mm_DG_Single_Coated_Circular.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">Sigma 95mm DG Circular Polarizer</a>, as well as large <a href="http://singh-ray.com/grndgrads.html" target="_blank">Singh-Ray grads</a> when needed.</p>
<p>My immediate first impressions are quite good, amazing build quality, great zoom ring  and the silly test shots looks terrific. I’ll be shooting exclusively with the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/892349-REG/Canon_8035b002_EOS_6D_Digital_Camera.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS 6D</a> on this trip.</p>
<p>Justin has received the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/909812-REG/Sigma_137101_120_300mm_f_2_8_DG_OS.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 DG OS</a> for review and he’ll be putting it through the paces with the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/827036-REG/Canon_5253B002_EOS_1D_X_EOS_Digital.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS-1D X</a>. He’s already shocked at the size and weight of the lens. No, it’s not a “hand holding” lens for most people. The first 2 negatives you can give the lens is the heavy and unnecessary metal lens hood and the equally enormous tripod foot. Third party accessory makers could surely knock a pound off the lens replacing both parts with lighter weight materials.</p>
<p>Optically and AF wise the lens is very good with initial test shots, Justin has the USB dock and will also put that through its paces.</p>
<p>Both reviews should be online some time in April, though I’ll be posting images from the Zeiss 15mm as the trip progresses.</p>

EF lenses could work on a mirrorless body, right?

I don't have this wrong, do I? If they made a mirrorless body that wasn't super thin, but rather the same basic thickness as a DSLR, then there would be no problem? The adaptor that lets the M camera use EF lenses is really just a spacer to get the lens farther from the sensor, right?

If so, given the huge line of EF lenses that the DSLR makers all have, couldn't they go mirrorless without needing to create all new M lenses, and making EF lenses obsolete? I don't think most serious amateurs would really want cameras to get small. A lot of folks say they like the bigger cameras because they are the right size for handling. .

Wacom Intuos Creative Pen & Touch tablet

About 2 weeks ago I bought the Canon 6D. With it, I got a full license of Adobe Lightroom 5 & Premiere Elements 12. On top of that I got for free the Wacom Intuos Creative Pen & Touch tablet.
Nice package deal.

Now, I just wonder what to do with the tablet. I never used a pen and tablet for post-processing my photos. It is really something different.

Do you use a pen and tablet for post-processing your photos? Can you share your experience in what is good and what is less good? Maybe there are huge advantages and I just need to get into it :-\

Thanks

cutting bait on the 24-105???

I'm quite fond of the 24-105 by Canon. It was my first L lens so it holds a special place in my heart.

I bought one in December of 2011 for 900 and change, I think... and I used it for a year and then I sold it for 850 give or take. And I bought another for 750.

I'm now mulling over selling the recent one for 700, if I can get that price, and then buying a new one foot around 550. So basically what I'm doing is just riding the depreciation wave down and minimizing my losses while still using new gear that is basically under warranty.

But... is it worth continuing to do that? I contend the 25-105 is a solid contributor to my lineup, but it has never been my go-to lens. Yes there is the tamron which I chose not to acknowledge, and of course the Canon 24-70 f2.8L mkii... but I'm willing to play the 24-105 game until the sigma comes out with the 24-70 f2... if they ever do. Then... at that point I'll make my decision between the Canon or the sigma...

What to do... what to do.

Abnormal slow down/failure of Ultrasonic Motor of EF 70-200mm f/4L IS

I am lodging a complaint to Canon Hong Kong regarding the abnormal slow down/failure of Ultrasonic Motor of EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM, S/N: 0050XXX, purchased in Sept 2012, I discovered that the focusing speed is significantly slower than my 24-105, so I took it to the Canon Showroom in HK 2 weeks ago, to compare it with the EF 70-200mm F4L IS on display. Canon's engineer immediately identified that this is due to motor failure. A repair fee of HK$1.6K, with 15% discount.

I researched on this issue and found a lot of reports on similar problems posted on online forums in USA, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China(see hyperlinks below). There have been numerous cases of focusing slip of USM of the same model, especially on lens produced in 2011-2012, UZ & UA code, (my lens is UA). Most report that when the lens are held 90 degree upright, the AF would stop working. The focus speed would slowdown and it would worsen over time.

Apparently, this is DESIGN FAULT, or QUALITY CONTROL issues.

A local small forum has 32 users reported the problem and get it repaired, 10 users confirm a fee about US$120 (incorrectly typed 1200) is charged. http://www.dchome.net/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1161908&extra=&page=1

I would like to urge Canon to recall the batch globally, get the motor parts replaced! Similar problems have happened to Nikon’s D600. Following a complaint and a file of lawsuit in California, they recalled the faculty batch globally.

I am making informing local newspaper and gathering S/N, Batch code and repairing date for further action. Can anyone doing the same in the USA?

Today, the Canon EF 800 f/5.6L IS costs US$ 13,289 if you buy it from B&H. If a new version did come out, as a CR1 is reporting here: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=20042.0 how much do you think it would cost?
