Y'all are really good at spotting front or back focus in photos...

And today was the first real opportunity I had to go and play with my new 70-200mm f2.8L is mkii. so if y'all don't mind looking at some zoo photos. this was just a test. I had it on aperture priority all day and I should have kicked up the iso to 1200+ when I was indoors, but I wass lazy and didn't bother. so they aren't perfect, and I'm really impressed with the lens.

at the moment I have a 60d, so no afma, but I will be upgrading to a 5d mkiii soon. so if it is a bit front focused, I will eventually be able to correct that without issue.

photos to come.

Would this be original lastolite hilites?

Hi guys, I've been trying to do high key pictures with the help of normal living room curtains as a kind of cheap option, but I noticed that amazon itself has the lastolite 5x7 hilite background for 90 UK pounds (equivalent to 140 dollars), which is less than 1/3 of the normal 300 pound (450 dollar) price as far as I am aware.
Would there be any chance that these are not the original lastolite products or could this just be a really really weird price setting?

50 1.2L back-focuses with lateral focus points

I am experiencing a strange issue with my 50mm f1.2L lens:
when I use any of the lateral focus points (from a 5dmk3), also the cross type, the lens back-focuses. It happens also when the aperture is set to 1.2. When I choose a central focus point, the focus is perfect.

It is not an issue of the camera as I don't see the same problem with the 85mm f1.2L.

I am wandering if this issue affects only my copy or is it normal; maybe it is due to the same spherical aberration that causes the well known focus shift issue (backfocus when stopped down).

Do you have the same issue with your 50 1.2L lenses?

Thanks for your replies (and sorry for my imperfect English)!

35 & 85 or 50 & 100 for photographing kids

I have a Canon 5DIII and 24-70 II. I take pictures of my 21-month old daughter exclusively at this point. (I used to do more street, fine art, etc. but don't have time anymore and won't for the foreseeable future.)

I want to add a couple of fast primes for lower light work and shallower depth-of-field. I'm trying to decide between a 35 & 85 and a 50 & 100. My decision will be based on focal length preference, of course, but also on the quality/price/value of lenses available at those focal lengths.

I'm somewhat leaning toward 35 & 85, for a few reasons. First, from what I can tell, the Sigma 35/1.4 is probably the most highly regarded of all of the 35 and 50 autofocus lenses. Second, I like environmental portraiture and tend to shoot quite a bit indoors, so the wider perspective of the 35 might be a better fit there. Third, it seems the portrait options are better at 85 than at 100? The 85L II is legendary, and many agree that the Sigma 85 comes close to it at less than half the price.

On the other hand, 50 is a great focal length for general work and casual portraits, and the 50L has beautiful, creamy bokeh and a nice look. (I actually own the 50L now, and enjoy it.) The Canon 100/2, while not as highly regarded as the Canon 85L or Sigma 85, is still a great lens by most accounts.

I guess this also depends somewhat on my future lens plans. Frankly, the only additional lens I can imagine getting in the future (assuming my subject matter doesn't change) is a telephoto. I would probably either choose the 70-200 IS or the 135L.

Curious to hear if you have any thoughts about this choice? Thanks.

360 Indoor/Outdoor Panos. Does ANYONE know ANYTHING...

Hello all,

I'm trying to find anyone who knows anything about producing several indoor and outdoor panoramas for a Dude Ranch here in Tulsa. I know how to create them in photoshop CS5, however, I have no clue when it comes to how to create a flash, java, silverlight, etc file to store them in so they can put the file on their website. The idea is that they can have a 360 degree view of Cabin 1, 2, etc.

Does anyone know of a method of doing this before I take the gig? I'll likely just use the 17-40 (or 16-35 ii if I upgrade by then) on a 5Dii, though I'll be renting the 8-15 fisheye for a fun wedding in early June and can toy with that if it is recommended.

Thank you, thank you, thank you,

Handicam, lens or other?

Hey all,

So I've got into my head that I am going to film a sports commercial. I do pretty well with stills and sports, but have no clue what I'm doing video-wise.

The subject matter will pretty much be full body-shot or closer up of individual athletes (actors). So the question I have is this: are there must-haves missing from the following equipment list?

  • 5d3
  • 7d
  • Tamron 17-55
  • Canon 24-105L
  • Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS
  • Canon 85 1.8
  • Canon 50 1.8
  • Rode Videomic
  • Adobe CS4 Production Suite
  • Some misc lighting and stands, both flash and constant
  • Crappy tripod

So should I be able to make due with what I have, or am I missing essentials? The biggie that comes to mind would be a handicam or some sort of stabilizer. Maybe other lens options? A boom mic? Something I'm completely missing?

Much thanks!

7D and rear curtain flash :(

Why will my 7D not do a rear curtain flash with non-Canon devices? I just purchased the pixel soldier remote trigger set only to find out that Canon wont let me do a second curtain flash. There is no reason not to allow rear curtain. All the camera has to do is to send the flash signal and that is it :(

Any ideas what is behind this or even better a fix for this?

Lighting question

Does flash with the sun behind the subject look unnatural to anyone else? For instance, when I see a picture of a bride and groom on the beach and the sun is setting behind them over the water, but the photographer has used flash to illuminate their faces - it just looks really awkward to me. Am I the only one?

Focal Plus vs Pro? Which do you recommend?

Hi

I am considering buying Focal for my 5DM3 and soon (I hope) new 1Dx. Lens range from 14mm through 500MM IS original version, plus zoom, ....

As I look at the difference between Plus and Pro I notice that Pro adds bells and whistles (save charts, watch analysis as it progresses), plus some unspecified tools "more control over the camera setup, ... and the addition of several other tests: Aperture Sharpness, AF Consistency, Dust Analysis and the MultiPoint Focus Test."

Does these add with MicroFocus adjustments or more diagnostics about the lens. Since I have had the lens for a while, I can not exchange them for better copies at the local camera store. Do the additional tests help or are they simply expensive bells and whistles.

Thanks

7D Rear Dial Cheap?

Just purchased a 7D and the rear main jog dial feels cheap.

This is the third body I've used and one of the two previous ones were like this too. Best way to describe it is a cheap, flimsy plastic feel. It works just fine, but pushing the SET button makes a popping/clicking noise. The dial itself turns just fine and has good tactile response but some play if you tap on it vs. turning it.

This is unlike any other EOS body with a rear dial I have tried. Again, 2 out of 3 have been like this.

Is it just me?

Bolt VX-760C Wireless TTL Flash

Has anyone out there used the Bolt flashes, particularly the VX-760? They appear to be exclusively sold by B&H, and there are no reviews on their site. The price is right and the specs looks very good (E-TTL, guide number close to the 600ex and can be used wirelessly as master/slave), but I'd love to know how it works in the field.

AF "Cases" for use with Dance Photography

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could suggest optimal settings for Dance Photography. I will be shooting in ambient/available light,no flash is permitted. There will be "decent" light coming in through large windows, and the construction of the building is off-white marble. I have a Canon 5D Mark III, and available lenses include a 24-105L, 70-200L. Again no flash is permitted.

I would also like to know if anyone feels one of the AF "cases" would be pertinent in this case.

Thanks!

Took the FF Plunge - musings!

I am a long time watcher on the forum. Great place to learn. I have been shooting cropped-frame Canon cameras for 8 years. Started with a Rebel XT and have worked my way up to a 7D. I never believed I would be interested in FF cameras since I mainly shoot birds and other wildlife and always wanted the crop. But when the 5D Mk III came out I will admit I was intrigued. I then decided to rent a 5D Mk II just to see how bird photos looked (took over 5000 photos in 13 days). I was amazed at the quality of the photos from the Mk II and to my surprise how many more keepers I had. The color is beautiful and the detail is amazing compared to the 7D. Birds in flight captured beautifully from quite a distance. And not only that the noise was greatly reduced. I hate to shoot with the 7D above ISO 600 but I could bump the ISO to 1200 and even higher on the 5D and the photos were less noisy than a 7D at 400 (IMHO). I'm sold and I bought a mk III! The big brown truck will be here next week. Can't wait! BTW, working with a 5D MK II was (overall) really no different than working with the 7D. That was nice for the learning curve. I am still keeping the 7D. It takes great photos too!

Review - Google Glass

And now for something completely different ...

So I happened to get the first pair on the West Coast which was fun, and have been using this new device for about two weeks. Focusing on the camera aspect, I'm finding it takes remarkably good pictures and video, and I think I know why. One, there's no zoom, so no crummy plastic zoom lens hunting around. Two, it sits on the best tripod you have - your head. By best I mean the most readily available, convenient and stable. It even auto-tracks your subject?

Anyhow it beats the hell out of using a cell phone camera, but the video and stills aren't as good as my S100. But when you add in the stability and orders of magnitude better convenience it's a winner. It's my new go-to for snapshots and videos.

5D MK III Focusing Question

Hello!

This is my first post here and apologies if it makes me sound like I'm completely clueless, however...

I'm relatively new to the 5D Mk III having used a 60D previously. My question is this: when I am using AV mode, how can I see what points of the image are being focused on? With my 60D, this was clearly apparent through the viewfinder with it demonstrated the elements of the picture that were in focus (which is of course, very helpful!) however, despite trawling the internet I'm not entirely sure how I amend the settings on the 5D so that it enables me to see what sections are in focus.

If anyone could help, I'd be very grateful!

Many thanks.

Tripod and multiple camera straps

Hi all. I know this sounds odd, but I am frustrated with the time/effort required to swap lenses back and forth from my sling bag to the camera body. As a possible solution, I am thinking about a strap system that permits carrying two bodies with different lenses, e.g., cotton carrier. Unfortunately, I almost always shoot from a tripod. So, my question is whether anyone has solved the problem of ready accessibility of two camera bodies and a tripod? No, I don't want to carry two tripods Thanks for sharing your experience.
