There are 4 wide-angle L prime lenses coming in the next 12 months [CR2]

As we look at the holes in the RF lens lineup, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that the wide angle prime lens offerings are lacking. We currently only have the Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro and Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro lenses to fill the void.
We have been told that Canon will be releasing the following 4 wide angle L prime lenses in the next 12 months.

Canon RF 12mm f/1.8L USM
Canon RF 24mm f/1.4L USM
Canon RF 28mm f/1.4L USM
Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM (This has been rumored for an eternity)

That said, the next L lens to be announced from Canon will be the Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L USM. We’re not sure if this lens will get a DS version like the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS USM. We’re...

RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Firmware Update, Version 1.1.1

Can't tell what the update does, but Canon released a firmware update 08/31 (WIN) and 09/01 (MAC) for the RF 70-200 f2.8:

Don’t expect any third-party autofocus lenses in the near future

Since the story broke last week that Viltrox was told by Canon to cease making any autofocus lens for the RF mount, there has been a lot of chatter for obvious reasons. The lack of RF native autofocus third party lenses has become a growing concern amongst shooters.
One of the good things to come from multiple folks covering this issue, is people begin to talk a bit more candidly about the topic at hand.
I have spoken to two quality sources on the topic, from completely different geographical locations and they both have said very similar things.
The big one being, Canon has no plans to give permission to third party manufacturers to utilize their RF mount patents as they pertain to electronics and autofocus anytime in the near future.
We have been told that there are a few reasons for this, and please don’t shoot the messenger.

Canon doesn’t feel the RF lineup is anywhere near maturity, and they want the lineup filled out with their own lenses first. Canon still has lots of work...

Canon Germany addresses recent Viltrox RF mount lens demands, and it’s a case of patent infrigement

Last week a bunch of reports hit the web about Viltrox being told to stop producing lenses for the RF mount by Canon. In an exclusive report, German magazine Photografix has received word from Canon Germany about the issue.
It looks like it affects autofocus lenses being made for the RF mount and patent infringement. What the exactly Viltrox was infringing on is unknown. Rokinon continues to sell AF lenses for the RF mount.
From Canon Germany (Google Translated)
“SHENZHEN JUEYING TECHNOLOGY CO.LTD, manufactures auto focus lenses for Canon RF mount under the brand name “Viltrox”. Canon believes that these products infringe their patent and design rights and has therefore requested the company to stop all activities infringing on Canon’s intellectual property rights.”
So what does this mean for the likes of SIGMA and Tamron...

Mark5dIV dropped in water.

Dear all. A month ago I've dropped my mark5dIV with attached lens in a lake. It was under water for about twenty seconds without a battery. I dried it in rice and after three days everything except for the shutterbutton worked again. I used a remote cable and the touchscreen also worked fine for focussing. Back home I had it examined by a specialized canon company and the mailed me that they could see it had fallen into water and that there is serious waterdamage and corrosion. The couldn't repair it and asked me if I wanted my camera back. I received it today and everything works fine, even the shutter release button. What to do. Will it die after some weeks or .......... I was looking already for another r5dIV, r6 or r5, but I'm in doubt now. Is there some one with the same experience?

Spider wrapping butterfly in silk

I was watching a Gatekeeper Butterfly when it landed and seemed to be behaving strangely. I aimed the R5 + RF 100-500mm from about 1.5m away and saw through the evf that it was being attacked by a spider. After being completely wrapped, it was taken away and suspended from a stem. I think it is a Four Spot Orb Weaver spider. The wrapping is best seen in a an animated gif in the next post.

Updating the forum UI for larger images

First, I would like to thank the admin, mod and site owner(s) for the tireless work they have done with our forum.

Is there any chance that the forum UI be updated by relocating objects on the left side of the screen like the member's

to the top part of the post?

This frees up the space on the left for more space for larger photos that can be as wide as 1600px.

Questions about IS and IBIS with various lenses on a R5

A long post, I apologize in advance.

I have some questions about Lens IS and IBIS on the R5 - an EF lens with IS v.s EF lens -No IS v.s RF lens with IS.

I experimented using 3 lenses: a EF 85mm F1.8 which has no IS, a RF 24-240mm which has IS and an EF16-35mm F4 L with IS.

First, I added the IS menu option to the "Green" menu so that I could see it all the time. The Red 7 menu IS option is only shown with non IS lenses. Note: the menu only says "IS", not IBIS. Camera was in Manual mode at this time. Originally the option was only shown in the Red menu, page 7 with Firmware 1.6.0. if you had mounted a non IS lens.

I could see this on the menu with the 85 mm on both Red 7 and Green pages, giving me the options of IS mode On/Off. I assume this means In Body IBIS can be active with a non IS lens.

Question 1: Does that mean that the in body IBIS will provide stablization for a non stablized EF lens?

I then switched to the RF 24-240mm having IS.

Red 7 did not show the IS option at all. On the Green menu, the IS option was grayed out but allowed me to chose and open it, saying "Not available with the attached lens". Why the words "Not available" ??? I know the lens has IS.

Question 2: Why is Canon hiding the menu if IBIS & Lens IS is on and why not state clearly whether IBIS and / or Lens IS is ON or OFF? Also given the differences between the EF and RF lens, state "Limited Stablization" or "Full Lens Stablization"

To me, this indicates that with this RF lens, lens IS and IBIS is on all the time and the only option is to shut it off by switching off the IS on the lens itself. However, when I switch off IS on the lens, I get the same message as above on the Green page - "Not available with the attached lens" and no entry on Red 7. I have read several times that switching off the lens IS disables all IS / IBIS functions yet this is not displayed on the menu.

Question 3: Why when you switch OFF the Lens IS is that not reflected in the menu? I would think with FW 1.6.0 that the IBIS option on Red 7 would reappear if the IBIS / Lens IS were switched off.

Finally, I put the EF 16-36 IS lens on using the EF-RF Control Ring adapter (as I did above with the 85 mm). Red 7 menu shows no IS /IBIS menu option. Green shows IS option "Grayed out" but when I open this it gives the same message "Not available with the attached lens"

I am assuming that when Canon says on the Green menu "Not available with the attached lens" or shows nothing on the Red 7 menu, it means that IBIS and lens IS is on given that this is the same message I get with the RF 24-240 having IS.

I would ASSUME that the message indicated that EF Lens IS is doing its thing while the R5 IBIS corrects the remaining settings. But this should be stated clearly. Given the RF 24-240 has the 12 pins, I can assume it has better communications with the lens and can co-ordinate all the IS / IBIS functions whereas the EF16-35 L IS can only communicate with 8 pins thus limiting what it can do. Note that the EF16-35 gives the same messages as the 24-240 whether the lens IS switch is On or Off.

So I am massively confused. Why doesn't Canon change its menu when you switch off IS on the lens? Why do they not make it obvious in separate fields that lens IS or IBIS is active or inactive and switch ththe appropriate entries when you turn off the Lens IS switch.?

I would love it if Canon would 1) Change the verbiage to say "Stablization" on the entry on Red 7, having this shown all the time, with that entry stating clearly IBIS ON/OFF and Lens IS is either Enhanced (RF), Limited (EF) or OFF and 2) Change those settings when you switch off the lens IS switch.

Hopefully, someone here can clarify some of this for me.

Sorry for the long post...

Canon EOS R6 Mark II already in prototype testing [CR1]

A Twitter user (how2fly) with a track record that we cannot verify has reported that the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is already in prototype testing.
This camera is reported to have a stacked sensor like what is found in the Canon EOS R3. Any variation of that image sensor would likely make its way down the product line.
We have reported that a new full-frame camera will be coming sooner than later to replace the discontinued EOS R. Perhaps this is part of that, or nothing at all.

The state of home printers in 2022

How is home printing doing these days?
I’ve had the Canon PixmaPro 9000 and 100 on a Mac. While the results can be great, I used to spend excessive amounts of time tracking down error messages and waiting interminably long for the printing to start. I don’t have go into the 8 different tiny ink cartridges drying out or going empty on a repeated basis.

What do fellow forum members currently enjoy printing with?

The state of third-party lenses for the RF mount, Canon may be involved

One of the most important things in the gear world for value conscience buyers, are third-party lenses. Sigma and Tamron became pretty big players in the EF market when they both changed direction and brought their lenses up market, but still aggressive price wise when compared to similar Canon offerings.
The rollout of third-party lenses for the RF mount has been extremely slow, and we only have Rokinon and Viltrox making autofocus lenses for the RF mount, but they use the EF protocols and not the latest and greatest from the RF mount.
Samyang at one point made RF mount lenses, but that abruptly stopped without any public reason why.
I have now been told through a third party that Viltrox, a smaller manufacturer of lenses has been told by Canon that they cannot make RF mount lenses and to stop selling any such products. Did the same thing happen to Samyang (who makes Rokinon)? Are...

No Viltrox Lenses for RF mount.

Seems like even Viltrox AF lenses have gone down the route of Samyang lenses with Canon's Legal team threatening them. So no wonder Tamron and Sigma have both decided to ditch RF mount lenses while developing E and L(sigma) lenses.

Point and Shoot Cameras are Basically Dead

https://petapixel.com/2022/08/08/point-and-shoot-cameras-are-basically-dead/

Point-and-Shoot-Cameras-are-Basically-Dead-800x420.jpg

Almost every major camera manufacturer has either openly discontinued its point-and-shoot line of cameras or has not produced a new one in many years, according to a new report. In short, smartphones have all but totally replaced compact cameras.

The compact camera market, colloquially known as point-and-shoot cameras, has been experiencing a massive collapse in worldwide shipments over the last decade and a half. Since 2008, when worldwide shipments reached 110.7 million cameras, the market has significantly shrunk and fallen to 3.01 million units as of 2021 — a 97% drop.

Nikkei reports that in response to the market’s contraction, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Fujifilm, and Sony have all either dramatically scaled back productions or outright admitted that there will be no further compact cameras.
“Although we are shifting to higher-end models, we have strong support for lower-end models, and will continue to develop and produce them as long as there is demand,” Canon tells Nikkei.

Canon denies that it isn’t planning to make new compact cameras, but it hasn’t released a new one since 2019.
Sony’s response echoes Canon’s and the company says that it is not discontinuing new product development in the compact camera space, although Nikkei notes the company hasn’t made a new “Cyber-Shot” camera — its compact camera line — since 2019.

Nikkei reports that Nikon has stopped developing cameras that would fall under its “Coolpix” line, the company’s branding for compact point-and-shoot style cameras. Nikon tells Nikkei that it still sells two high-magnification models and that future production volume will be determined by the market, which as noted, isn’t growing.

Panasonic, which at one point owned the top share of Japan’s compact camera market, tells Nikkei that it has been reducing the volume of point-and-shoots that it has been producing over the last several years in response to the shrinking market. Additionally, while it plans to keep making current compact cameras for the time being, it will focus on developing high-end mirrorless cameras aimed at enthusiasts and professionals, including a camera that it plans to release next year that it is developing in conjunction with Leica.

Nikkei claims Fujifilm has ceased production on its compact camera line “FinePix” and is not actively developing new models for it, instead focusing its efforts on higher-end models like the X100V and above.

Ricoh, which owns the Pentax brand, and OM Digital aren’t mentioned in the story, but Ricoh seems unfazed by the market contraction and has notably released two point-and-shoot cameras in the last year: the WG-80 and the GR IIIx (and later along with its special edition). Ricoh seems immune to making decisions in line with market trends, as it has also stubbornly refused to make a mirrorless Pentax camera, going so far as to say that the brand “cannot go mirrorless.”

It has been a long, slow process, but the death of the point-and-shoot appears all but complete at the hands of the smartphone, whose imaging capabilities manufacturers continue to improve.

Newbie Problem: Shivering/Flickering in Videos

Hello!
I´m new here.
My Grand-Dad allows me to use his 2 Camera Bodies for shooting pictures and videos at an Airshow and Formula One race in the next two weeks.

He has an Canon Eos R5 and new an Eos R7 with crop.
Shooting stills is no problem, the cameras work well with his lenses.
My problem is the Video mode.
I looked at both cameras and saw that the R5 is more powerful than the R7, so the R7 will be combined with the 100-500 for stills.
The R5 mostly for Video: His EF 100-400 with an adapter for planes and cars far away and a RF 70-200 2,8 or his RF 27-70 2,8 for planegroups.
I do not know how to profesionally edit videos. I will just cut away not interesting parts and optimize brightness or such easy things. I decided to use 4K-U, 50frames/s, and IBP for compression. All-I does just allow to shoot on card one (that is an superfast CFexpress card). More than 1 hours of recording time on each of the 128GB cards are possible if I use IBP, so I will use this mode. I have my laptop with me to download the files after the card is full.

I tried to do some videos, but the films are awful "flickering". I use an tripod with an handle for more acurate panning. But the films by itself looks flickering. The last video this morning was made with Iso 400, F8 and 1/800s. On the camera display it looks great, but not on the monitor at home.

What do I do wrong? My Grand-Dad does no video, so he can´t help me.

Help is really welcome.
Thank you a lot.
Thomas
