Ye Bee-eaters of Merrie England

Now, for those who thought it was a typo and were hoping to see photos of those guardians of the Tower of London, I am afraid you will be disappointed. The European Bee-eater is an extremely rare visitor to the UK but this summer a flock of 8 has taken up residence in Norfolk and are breeding in two nests. So my wife and I have just stayed for 3 days there and have taken a 1000 or more images. They were mainly about 80m away, sometimes as close as 60m and as far as about 120m. These are smallish birds, about 27-30cm long and so were a challenge and opportunity to test the R5 and R7 with the RF 100-500mm and RF 800 f/11 with TCs. I even packed a Gitzo Traveller tripod, which is very rare for me. I was not expecting any great images - I have many shots of close-ups of Bee-eaters in Asia and Africa - but it was for the record of seeing them here, albeit at a great distance. As far as gear goes, the R7 coupled to the RF 800 f/11 hand held proved the most useful kit.

Sapphire Coated Optical Grade Acrylic Prime Lenses at T1.0 to T2.0

High-end Fluorite Glass typically used in premium-quality prime and zoom lenses have a Refractive Index of 1.434 while pure optical grade acrylic is 1.495. A lens coating such as Sapphire has a refractive index of 1.76 (i.e. refractive index = how much does light "bend" away from a given incoming light direction)

Refraction is a good thing or a bad thing depending upon application. In terms of Cinema-grade prime lenses and zoom lenses equivalent to the quality of Zeiss Master Primes or Leica Summilux-C, high refraction indexes are a GOOD THING allowing a lens designer to grind and shape lenses so that MORE LIGHT is gathered and re-directed towards the CMOS/CCD image sensor. This means brighter, clearer imagery with less object edge fringing and unintended distortion.

If one uses advanced software that ray-traces each light ray path towards each photosite on an imager, one can design BOTH prime and zoom lenses such that T1.0 to T2.0 lenses can be made that are TRULY NEUTRAL AND SHARP with ALMOST NO coma, chromatic aberration, colour shifting or prismatic effects! By coating the outer and inner layer of an optical grade all-acrylic lens element with Sapphire (aka clear Aluminum Oxide), the layer density and the optical diffraction and refraction path differences between the two substances CAN be accounted for in software that then gets translated to real world light gathering in variable conditions ranging from Golden Hour Sunset/Sunrise to Harsh Overhead Noon Sunlight to Gloomy Cloud-cover days and near midnight dark conditions.

The key issue being outlined in this post is that very recent discoveries relating to inexpensive mass-production of thick-film sapphire coatings (one mm and greater) vacuum-sputtered onto all-acrylic lens elements combined with advanced ray-tracing software HAVE NOW BROUGHT the ability to make Zeiss and Leica-quality Cinema-grade prime and zoom lenses that cost one-third to one-tenth the cost of those vaunted brands and are HALF-THE-WEIGHT!

One-Third to One-Tenth the cost of Sony G-series, Canon L-series, Leica Summi/Lummi-series and Zeiss Master Prime/Otus at Half-The-Weight at T1.0 to T2.0

Canon thinks that the camera market decline has bottomed out, and targeted growth is coming

Canon has ammended their Q2 2022 financials with their thoughts about the future of the camera market. It’s one that we tend to agree with. The entry-level market formerly represented by the Powershot line and EOS Rebel line is essentially over for the obvious Smartphone reasons.
A few years ago Canon did say that they see the future of the business to be in producing products to target specific types of users. Now Canon thinks that they will see growth in the prosumer and professional spaces. A Sony executive’s recent silly claim that Smartphones would surpass ILCs in performance within three years aside, Canon will continue to listen to customers and produce targeted products to meet their ever changing needs.
Canon also says that they will continue to produce DSLRs as long as their is demand. I would not expect new DSLRs to be announced, but cameras like the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III will be a viable tool for years to come.

Canon’s next RF mount camera is in the field

Canon’s next APS-C camera will be a small form factor “vlogger”, which we’re told will be close to the Canon EOS M6 Mark II in design.
Confirmed specifications are still relatively unreliable, but you can be sure that it will shoot 4K at 60fps and that there will likely be a 120fps mode.
We have also been told that the camera will use a different kind of vari-angle LCD screen. We cannot confirm this as we haven’t seen the camera yet. Canon’s current design is loved by a lot of people, but not everyone. The number one complaint we hear is that the screen flips to the side, and a lot of people would like it to flip over the camera.
We hope to confirm more information about this camera soon. It is expected to be announced before November 2022.
More to come…

R10 user reports

Hey Gang,

Got my R10 yesterday from Amazon. It's going to replace my trusty 77D that has been used primarily as a travel camera and theoretically as a backup to my R6 for professional work. I took it out for a short trial run today with tripod and various lenses. Here are some things I've noticed so far.

It's really nice to have a joystick to move the focus box, like I have on my R6.

The menus are quite familiar and seem to have a few new options I need to explore later.

The sensor performance is very similar to my old 77D, which was also 24 mp. No real improvement that I can see. In Lightroom, ISO 800 is usable without noise reduction. Shots above that ISO respond well to noise reduction. 3200 is the highest I tried, since I don't plan to use this camera for low light work.

I was really hoping the RF 18-45 kit lens would be better than the horrible kit lenses in the EF-S line. It looks like there is substantial improvement, but you will still want a better lens or three if you are a pixel peeper like I am. I haven't tried any RF L-series lenses yet, but I did try the consumer grade RF 16, 35, 50 and 85mm lenses. They were all noticeably sharper than the kit lens, as you would expect. They were best when stopped down to the F4 to F8 range. The kit lens did not get sharper when stopped down.

The kit lens has a strange setting on the zoom ring to retract the lens. It takes more force than you might expect, but you won't have to worry about lens creep. There is a choice in the menu to automatically retract the lens when the camera is turned off, which sounds like a nice option. Unfortunately it didn't work with my kit lens. Anyone know the story on that?

I'm pleased with the small size of the R10. It's smaller than the Rebel bodies I've used as travel cameras for years, but still has a nice grip and controls. My travel cameras have to ride in backpacks or motorcycle tank bags, so size and weight are critical. They also have to compete for attention with my cell phone when it's time to pick which camera to bring along on a trip.

Overall, here are the advantages over my 77D: It's smaller and lighter. The kit lens is better, but still not great. The autofocus system is excellent and very similar to my R6. It allows me to use my small but growing collection of RF lenses.

What would I like to see Canon offer in the future? These high density crop sensors really deserve L-grade optics in a small form factor that don't compromise portability. I would pay a lot for an 18-45 kit lens about the same size as the current one, but built with high grade glass. Sure, you can put full frame L lenses on these little bodies, but that totally defeats their purpose.

I tried to attach a RAW file, but this site doesn't allow that. Sorry!

Shutter shock on the R7

There is discussion in various forums about shutter shock with Electronic First Curtain Shutter (EFCS) with the R7. I have been following this and have done careful tests of my own with charts and would like to sum up the situation. Shutter shock can occur when any shutter is opened mechanically and it causes a vibration, independent of whether the camera is mirrorless or a conventional DSLR, unlike mirror slap that can't occur for mirrorless. EFCS is designed to avoid this as the shutter opens electronically and closes mechanically, after exposure. But, it has been noted with the R7 in its high speed 15 fps drive for EFCS that the first shot is fine but that there is shutter shock for the subsequent shots. This appears to be because the shock of closing can vibrate the following shot. This doesn't happen for all lenses, the adapted EF 100-400mm II, for example, has been reported to be immune.

I have tested the RF 100-400mm, RF 100-500mm and RF 800mm f/11. In H+ mode of 15 fps with EFCS and mechanical shutter, there is noticeable shutter shock at lower shutter speeds that is nearly gone by 1/250s and completely absent at 1/400s. Electronic shutter has zero shutter shock as expected. In the H mode of 8 fps for EFCS, I couldn't see shutter shock at 1/60 s.

So the take home message is: avoid H+ mode for EFCS at /250s or slower and all mechanical modes at 1/250s or slower. Also, the R7 does have bad rolling shutter with ES, so avoid that when wings are flapping fast or panning fast against vertical lines. But, the R7 has a good variety of drive modes, the H+ mode is 30 fps for ES and 15 fps for MS and EFCS, the H is 15fps for ES, 8 for EFCS and 6.5 for for MS, and low continuous is 3 fps for all three modes, and so we have lots of choice for different situations. I leave the camera in low speed continuous ES for static shots, H+ ES for BIF and H+ EFCS for insects in flight etc where rolling shutter can be a disaster.

Aperture issue with 1992 Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 (only works properly at 2.8)

Hey guys,
I have a "little“ problem with my Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 (the 1992 model, very old I know but I got it for free so why not (try) use it): whenever I want to take a photo with this lens at another aperture than 2.8, I get Err. 1 message (‘clean lens contacts and restart camera’). However, as long as I take photos at 2.8, it works perfectly fine. No errors.
But now it comes to the strange part (which doesn’t make sense to me): first of all, while filming, there is absolutely no problem if I use other apertures than 2.8, the camera continues to film as if the lens would work perfectly fine. Secondly, if I take photos with an aperture of more than 2.8, I get the error shown on the screen, but only while the camera is saving the photo I just took. After the photo is saved, it takes another maybe 5 secs, but then I can continue shooting (no restart of the camera needed). Of course in practice this is pretty annoying and very inefficient. I also need to underexpose the photo at about -2ev, no matter what shutter speed I use.

I already tried cleaning the contacts on the lens as the error message suggests, but ofc it didn’t help (which I honestly didn’t expected to do but yeah, still tried it). My friend, from whom I got this lens, has the same problem with the lens on his M50 (using the EF-M adapter obviously). I thought that maybe the adapter is the problem, but nope it’s not.
So I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this problem (even though I suspect this to be a mechanical problem…)? And more importantly, is there any chance the lens could damage my camera in any way if I continue using it?

And yes, I know, this lens is pretty old and even if it would be possible, having it repaired wouldn’t make sense, but until I can afford a newer 2.8 lens I’d like to use this one since it’s my only lens besides the kit lens.
Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day/evening or whatever

Canon R5 C - please help me

I made the blunder of my life

10 days prior to going to Africa for a month long safari - I purchased a canon R5C thinking that I can use the best of both worlds in one camera and get wonderful video! I have Canon R5/R3 and have no issues with them.

I consider myself an advanced amateur in still photography but I am a novice when it comes to videography with dSLRs or MILC.

For the life of me can not figure out the settings for wildlife videography forget the "best settings" . I can not even set up the AF to work. I watched all the you tube videos - read the manual -there are not much on you tube on wildlife video with R5 C anyway ! But when I check in the field- everything falls apart - I can not even keep the moving subject focused or acquire focus on a moving subject - even if the subject is a human being 30 feet away !

I know the problem is with me - not with the camera! Please teach me how to set it up. I am leaving on Aug. 1st and need to have some confidence before I leave in shooting video.

P.S. the still photography part is absolutely fine. No issues

Thanks in advance

Canon has pulled firmware v1.2.0 for the Canon EOS R3 due to a bug

Canon has removed the firmware v1.2.0 download for the Canon EOS R3 due to a bug in the software.
The bug is described on the DPReview Forum
The issue is that if you have v1.2 on your camera and then perform a reset the mode dial does not work correctly and you cannot change between Tv Av etc
If you have updated to firmware v1.2.0 for the Canon EOS R3, do not do any resets until v1.2.1 is released.
Canon has always fixed these sorts of firmware bugs pretty quickly, so I would expect an update very soon.

R1 For 2024

I was at a professional sports event, in the press room and the discussion was TV lenses. When the Canon rep gave a date for the release of the lens he said it would be at the same time of a high-resolution R body. The lens is slated for 2024. This leads me to believe that the R1 is slated for "retail" distribution in 2024.

Canon R3 Buffer Depth...Did it Just Get Bigger w/ FW 1.2?

So I don't have my own test numbers from before 1.2 handy, but the internet tests I've found from other users appear to demonstrate that the R3 image buffer capacity has been optimized. And I mean shockingly improved. Bryan at The-Digital-Picture says "Shooting in C-RAW provides a 420 image buffer rating". My Canon R3 is absolutely crushing that now.

CAMERA SETTINGS: Electronic Shutter @ H+ 30fps, Shutter Speed 1/1000 and ISO of 100

SD Card: ProGrade Digital 128GB Cobalt V90
223 CRAW

CFExpress Card:
ProGrade Digital 650GB Cobalt
597 CRAW

Yes, you read that correctly. I am getting almost 600 CRAW images on my R3 now. I repeated it twice and got the same number of 597. I'm most shocked by the SD card numbers because I remember that being in the low 100s before, like 120-130 image range.

I would love to hear what others are seeing. Not that I have much use for a buffer capacity this deep, it does make me wonder if writing to dual cards will be more practical now. I'll have to test that later. Heck, these could have been the same numbers everyone had before and I'm losing my mind. But I don't think I am. I could never just hold down the shutter for almost 20 seconds in CRAW!

RF 100-400 possible problem

Curious if anyone else has noticed this beside me and I haven't seen it discussed on here. I'm using an RF100-400 on my EOS R and it seems after a short time the lens seems to be putting off a hot plastic odor for lack of a better way of putting it. Has anyone else noticed this happening with their lens? I'm wondering if I'm going to run into a problem with it? It's not very old and I haven't used it much. It would of course be just my luck........

Hummingbirds: A Celebration of Nature's Jewels

I've been in love with hummingbirds ever since the first time I saw one as a boy in my parents backyard.

Tomorrow my book on Hummingbirds will officially be published worldwide. This project is the result of thousands and thousands of hours in the field and took about 3 years to produce the book. It has truly been a labour of love and I am extremely proud to say that I really feel like this book does this spectacular and fascinating family of birds justice.

Thank you so much for those who have already purchased the book!

And for anyone else interested in a copy please check out the link below or take a visit to your local book shop

I've made a tripod mount for the 600/800 RF lens

Long time lurker around here (I blame all of you for my RF glass addiction), thought I should join up and share something cool I made.

I got frustrated trying to mount my 'fancy' 600mm lens to a tripod, and I even at times struggle to find a good grip on the lens without twisting the focus ring when I shoot. So I got busy with my CAD software and my 3D printer and made a lightweight tripod mount for it. I make it sound soooo easy...(please don't notice the 27 iterations sitting on my bookshelf). It's not the fanciest thing out there, but it works, it doesn't weigh much and there is no 'canon tax' on it.

It almost defeats the purpose of the concept of a light super-telephoto lens with IS, BUT when you need it, it won't take up much space in the camera bag or weigh it down.
I think I've got a winner here.
Specs:
ABS Plastic (printed as a solid for those who 3D print)
72g (2.5 oz)
Metal Screw knob and keeper pin, with a brass threaded insert (1/4"-20) on the bottom
Base is Arca-Swiss compatible
You can still collapse the lens with it mounted, even with the battery grip installed.

If you are interested in one, I've made a few so others can feel 'cool' without the big white prices

Mods if this isn't the appropriate place to post this, please let me know.
