1DX II -- what are you most excited about?

Just curious, as the 1DX II spec list doesn't exactly scream 'new hotness' nearly so much 'steady progress', what are you most excited about with this new rig?

  • Full spread of AF points available with 2x teleconvertered f/4 lenses or 1.4x teleconvertered f/5.6 lenses?
  • The +2 MP?
  • The +2 fps?
  • The potential of more DR?
  • Better performance in low light? (Spec limits be damned, we won't know until we shoot it)
  • Red servo AF indicators?
  • Movie AF, 4K, touchscreen for video, etc?

I'm just curious for those who are already preparing to pre-order -- what sealed the deal for you?

For me, it's the derivative technological advancements that will make the entire lineup more advanced.

I hear you. There are things missed in a spec list -- small little ergonomic advancements, sensor DR, tune-able settings in a menu system, etc. -- that we will all love and use every day once it's trickles down the pipeline.

For most people happy to pre-order, they will be excited about the 4k @ 60fps, even the $12,000 1DC couldn't do that, so for them it is massive. I think the vast majority will be taking a sit back and look approach but as so often with Canon cameras, the spec list is modest and underwhelming but the resultant camera gets the job done and owners love it.

I am in the market for one, and am disappointed at the MP count, but will wait until I get sme RAW files to play with before making a final purchase decision, for me it is about the sensor performance (and no that does not just mean low iso DR!).

I think the most exciting feature on paper is the 4k 60fps.
Given how long it took Canon to offer 1080p at 60fps, I'm surprised to see them go for it with 4k.

But this is all academic for me, I have no personal intention to buy this camera anyway. If anything, the only thing I'm excited about is to see how low the prices for the 1D X can fall. Probably not enough to allow me to get one, but I'll keep an eye on it anyway.

Better AF and more F8 points (more than 1).

Not in specs, is large buffer size (finally!)
Better low light and DR are nice.

I have pre ordered before the specs were release (can always cancel). I pre-ordered to hold my place in line and have an Africa trip coming in April.

While my 5D3 has given me fine service, this is a big leap. I don't care about video or GPS but f8 focusing, large buffer, illuminated focus points and in-camera lens correction all sounds good to me.

I'll wait a few months until I can a) scrutinise others' results and b) see what the 5D4 might offer before pulling the trigger on one.

Considering the performance of my 1DX, what am I missing?

I would have preferred more pixels. To go from 18 to 20 does not help much, so that is not an important factor.

For low ISO, high resolution shots, I have the 5DSR, which I am very happy with, so it is less important to me how it performs there. What I need is improved noise and DR at higher ISO. The 1DX is good, but I believe we should expect more from vII.

The AF functionality at f8 is a massive improvement. It also mean that a lot of the pixle issues will go away, especially if the high ISO performance is improved.

It can contain as much video functionality as it want. I will still not use it and it irritates me that I have to pay for it.

I struggle more often than I like with birds in flight and other fast moving objects. A wider spread of AF points and improved tracking would be important improvements, which it seems to include.

What most interests me is going to be seeing what advancements Canon has made in the sensor. Because this will be an indicator of what to expect in the 5D4 and possibly the 6D2. Cameras that I'm more interested in. I think that the 1DX2 with its advancements will make it the ultimate do-everything camera. But for my personal needs it is too much camera.

It stands to reason that the 5D4 or 5DX whatever it will be called, will be of the same technology and generation as the 1DX2. Thus, it shouldn't surpass the 1DX2 in high ISO performance. Although, it might come very close. Higher resolution for certain, and very close in ISO, DR ....Similar to how the 5D3 was in terms of the 1DX.

The 6D2 might be like the 6D in that it follows later on and makes use of slightly newer tech.

I don't expect revolutionary leaps, as that just does not happen with any camera. But a good solid evolutionary improvement would be good. Within the Canon system, the jump will appear large. Compared to other brands, it will probably be on paper still far behind. For certain DXO will rank it low.

However, real world results - such as actual image samples will prove otherwise. For being so weak on paper, Canon IQ is the equal or superior to their competitors.

True story. My friend bought the 1DX a year after I bought the 6D and was making his Nikon crop look bad. This last July he died having been thrilled with his 1DX for roughly one year. He kept bugging me to buy the 1DX but I really didn't fancy getting into a product line that late, so now it's my turn with the 1DX II and he would be thrilled to see me finally catch up.

The 1D IV was a great brief experience for me and I loved the lit AF point (didn't find it in the menu initially and was so thrilled when I did). I must have read a million praises of the 1DX since joining CR so I know I'll be satisfied with the successor. Ah but just a few more MPs ......

When I had the 1D4 there was noting about the 1DX (Mk1?) that excited me - but then I used one! Having used the 1DX for over 2 years the only thing that looks interesting to me is the ability to use more AF points at F8.
However, from past experience, I think I will be eating my words! :'(

The 1DX is such an awesome, complete camera. It will be a tough act to follow. What else does the MkII have to do? The 1DX has a thunderclap of a shutter noise, so Silent Mode will be much appreciated.

But hey...what else? I'd expect an overall refinement of an already close to perfect camera.
