the new 5DIII will be having LP-E6 batteries, my question is will the battery grip BGE6 be compatible with the 5dIII?
the body is available for pre-order but never heard about the grip as I need it as well whenever I'll be mounting heavy or long lenses to make it balanced.

The old grip is still listed under accessories on canons website. It will, however lack the M-Fn button and joystick. I also think the new grip loads batteries similar to the 1D style on the side and not the trap door on the back. Not to say that's worth the extra 200 dollars.

I was actually wondering that myself, yesterday. I checked usa.canon.com and it said that the BG-E6 was compatible with both the 5D Mark II and Mark III. However, I just checked it again and now it only says the Mark II. :-\

Is the reverse true?
Is the BG E-11 for the 5D MkIII back compatible with a 5D Mk2?

Highly unlikely. The 5D MkII wouldn't be expecting input from either the MFn button or the joystick, so those would be useless. Therefore, there's no reason to spend an extra $200 to get the BG-E11 for a 5D MkII, instead of the BG-E6.

Agreed. Was wondering if I could get away with just getting the BG-E11. Oh well - will check in on the Canon stand tomorrow at Focus on Imagine tomorrow :)

I prefer both...back and side.

The back opening allows you to change one battery at a time and keep the camera operating...great for video.

The side opening has the tray, so you can quick change both batteries. In gun terms, its the difference between a revolver and a clip. At least it is if you have a second tray with batteries already loaded.

I wish we could get the best of both worlds...a grip with some minimal internal battery/capacitor time, and the side exchange mechanism. Camera stays running, batteries changed faster.

I may have to get a 3rd party grip, and I'm not the type to say something is overpriced, but $500 for a battery grip is kind of ridiculous....It's not any bigger than other grips, it doesn't use different batteries, it appears that the only difference is the joystick. The joystick is cool, but not for $300 more than a normal grip. I wish they had one without the joystick for $200.

Nikons for the D800 is $449 and it doesn't even have a joystick.

$499 for the new BG-E11 is a total rip-off. Just wait for 3rd party clones for $149 + 2 x LP-E6 lookalikes. I swear that my non-Canon LP-E6 batteries last longer than OEM one (plus they are chipped so can be registered with camera body to check health/capacity etc.) 8)

Accessories usually have a much larger profit margin than the core product itself. From a business point of view it makes sense since once they sell you that base product, you are married to them.
That's from Canon's point of view. From ours, it's total bullshit. But if enough people will opt for the aftermarket ones, Canon will eventually lower the price.

well that's one of the reasons I asked if the BGE6 is compatible with the 5dIII thinking that I can trade off 1 button for a much lower price as the BGE6 ($350AU) is expensive already then how much more for the new one maybe 500+..

Rob Wiebe posted this link over in another thread, which has lots of photos of the body and grip.

A few of the pics show the pins for the BG-E11. I compared them to my BG-E6 and they are completely different. :(

Oh, as I was typing this up, someone posted a link to it on B&H, which now has the retail price: $349. Not great, but better than $490! :)

I wonder if the 3rd party grips will be Magnesium alloy or all plastic. That could make a huge difference in price.

I've had a great experience with an Opteka grip on my Xsi. Not a single problem including two 3rd party batteries.

However, I'm not sure if I would spend $3500 on a solidly constructed mag alloy body only to put a cheap plastic grip on it to save $250. The b&h list price is now $350. A fair price for an alloy grip with control dial. Compair that to the $200 canon xsi grip and it's a bargain.

For an inexpensive, small, light rebel, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Opteka grip. However, for a well built pro body, I think I'd fork out the few extra bucks for the real deal.
