I think it is not even economically rational to produce a Processor Unit for IMO only this body... I know that different bodies have different numbers and yet the marketing shouldn't let something like that happen if it is really a new processor.

Maybe they had lots of Digic 4+ chips left over from cameras that weren't produced due to declining demand, and if it's sufficient to do the job, it's more economical to use the chips than to discard them...

Yep. Excessive quantities would explain it. And usually people using this kind of cameras don't really bother (to know) these kind of details. ;)
