They have also reduced the minumum focusing distance by 10 cm, which I really like. The minmum focusing distance on the old version could sometimes feel a little limiting for me, so that is good news.

0.21x vs the old one at 0.15x, that's a nice improvement. Also the metal mount.

I have to echo the sentiment already made a couple of times - $125 for the lens is great, I might at last retire my old 50/1.8 MkI, but $30 for a hood is daylight robbery. And the pre-order advert wants people to pay another $30 for a 'protection' filter! 25%? I could get cheaper protection from the mob!

To the missing lens hood... it's not the best for the customer but quite ok for the company. If you don't need the expensive Canon-Accessoire, you can purchase cheap ones on ebay etc..

I got one for my 40mm STM 2.8 which is really fantastic. It's the lens hood from the Nikon 50mm 1.8 and it's made of metal instead of plastic. The size is not too big (because of the longer focallenght) but the *real* advantage is that there is a screw thread of 52mm on the front, so I can attach all my existing colorfilters/protectors from my vintage cams.

For me, searching for an existing one turned out to be the best way... after all.

I am sure not including the hood is all about price point and what they can advertise the lens at.

To state the obvious it looks a lot better to show this at $125 rather than the $150 or so that it would be with the hood. Sure, they could sell it at $125 with the hood but a fair number of people will buy the lens and not think twice after the fact about buying the hood.

Eventually I'm sure that will be possible, but it's a dedicated hood and based on a few minutes looking at other hoods I don't think there's an alternative which will fit.

Judging by the pictures the hood is another improvement actually, it's a nice solid bayonet-fitting hood like for example the ET-67B which I have for the 60 macro.

I still can't get over the fact that Canon doesn't include lens hoods with their lenses and then asks $30 for a plastic cylinder.

For a $125 lens, I'm OK with them not including the hood. I'd rather get it 125 lens only rather than 150 with a hood. The 24 IS, 28 IS and 35 IS are better candidates to be sold with hoods because they are more expensive, but even those didn't come with hoods...
