The Anniversary of the DSLR that Changed the Industry

Noticed this thread at FM

August 20, 2003

Canon announced the Digital Rebel aka 300D aka KISS. The first mass market digital SLR camera.

The 300D was my first dslr, how i loved the 5 second turn on time, the waiting for it to write to the card so I could take another picture. Life without a jog wheel. Ahhh, good times. The best part? the firmware hack for 10D features.

Cheers to you 300D!

This was mine, it's long gone. Sweet lens hood.

Leica and Canon Sitting in a Tree.

E-Mail States That Leica Is Considering Rebranding Canon DSLRS

There seems to be some information regarding Leica and Canon teaming up. I'd like some Leica glass for my Canon's!

From Imaging Insider
http://www.imaginginsider.com/?p=80413

Imaging Insider received an e-mail Monday, August 18, 2008, in response to one of our posts that originated from the Leica User Forum where it was speculated that Leica was considering rebranding Canon DSLRs. Well, the e-mail we received stated, “I work for Leica USA. It’s true, it’s true, it’s true…… None of us at this office believed it at first, but trust me, it’s true.”

Neat.

Canon Interview in China
Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 12:49 PM - Canon General
Interview from [PCP]

English translation from [NL]

* A rough estimation via the press centre for the Beijing olympics showed that about 70% of news photographers are Canon users [Quite the same as the number reported by Canon Professional Network for Euro 08]

* Canon has no plans to join the Micro 4/3 industry at the moment. Canon has different sized sensors already, and users have different systems. Most of them don't want to invest for another new system.

* Canon thinks different sensors have their own characteristics, whether or not APS-C will be replaced completely depends on market demand, but Canon takes the upcoming decrease of Full Frame camera cost due to sensor cost dropping as a good sign, which makes FF more affordable.

* The 50 Megapixel sensor is not ready to be used in cameras because other components are to be improved to fit it, for instance, larger sensor demands a larger body. The reason why Canon annouced this news is to prove her technological leadership is 10 years ahead of others. [that's an APS-H sensor in the original announcement BTW]

* On the 1D merging issue, with today's CMOS technology, it is not easy to get "Good quality, high speed" at the same time. Yet Canon tech has been developing rapidly, once the cost is reasonable, we can solve this problem.

* No words on 5D successor, saying that no such information available. But they have received feedback from Chinese dealers saying that people are waiting for a new 5D and 12MP will be enough already.

* About Canon's lack of passion about things like HDMI.... These technologies are not Canon's core ones but developed by others instead, we will buy them and put them in our camera if we found it necessary. We often need to make decisions between different features, for example, there is a company which uses vari-angle LCD on its monitor, this sacrifices the size of the monitor, some may thing it is good, visa-versa, and Canon has to pick the choice which most will appreciate, but not everyone will be satisfied.[this echoes what Chuck Westfall said during CES, with OLED, the display of SLRs will be a part of Canon's core technology, then we will see better monitors on them] Eye-controlled focus, we are not using it because of feedback from the market, but we haven't stop developing it,.

* Canon has noticed market demand of a product with small body but large sensor size, but no development has been carried out yet, Canon focuses on how to combine convenience and quality.[With that said, it may imply that "a product with small body but large sensor size" can not provide a versatile enough focal length range]

No leaks, just some decent info about Canon's direction.

Canon 40D Safe until New Year [CR5]
Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 10:38 AM - Canon 40D
Confirmed
The 40D will be remaining current through Christmas, expect another price drop sometime.

Only 1 New DSLR? [CR2]
A different source is saying only 1 new dSLR is coming in the near future from Canon.

It's CR2 because he's a nice guy and I don't want to call him an animal.

Why no pictures?
Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 09:56 AM - Canon General
Same question a lot
People keep asking me why Canon Rumors doesn't post images of new products like they do in the Nikon community.

The reason is simple, Canon doesn't release "leaks" for viral marketing campaigns on the web. Maybe they should, it's working very well for Nikon.

Although, being very secretive about upcoming products seems to keep people talking as well.

100 million cameras......

100 Million & Counting

That's a lot of cameras
For all the grief users, enthusiasts and internet lurkers give Canon, clearly they're doing something right.

40D..... 50D... oh my [CR2]
Monday, August 18, 2008, 06:39 PM - Canon 50D
Stock
Canon Canada still shows the 40D in stock and current as body only and 17-85 kit. The 28-135 kit is "backordered". Did they finally sell all their overstock on that lens?

50D Specs:
15.1mp
VGA LCD
6.5fps
Weather Sealed
Improved LV
Improved Sensor Clean
9 Point AF (bleh)
DIGIC III

Available in various forms:

Body Only
18-200 IS Kit
17-85 IS Kit

Expect an announcement on August 26. The 40D will remain current.

The problem with a lot of the 50D rumors is they all quote "6.3fps". The 40D is 6.5fps, it was DPR that found it to be 6.3.

Just a small observation.

Sigma 50 1.4 Review - DPR
Monday, August 18, 2008, 12:57 PM - Canon Lenses
Good Review

http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sig ... /page6.asp

A fellow wedding photographer used one of these on a 5D this past weekend and loved it. He said it was as good optically as the 50L and focused faster.

No Canon 50D yet? [CR3]
Monday, August 18, 2008, 11:58 AM - Canon 50D
2 new SLR's still valid
I received some good info from a very valid source. "The 40D is safe for a while". So don't expect a replacement before Photokina.

I am certain there are 2 SLR's coming down the pipe before Photokina, it's looking like original information about 2 FF cameras is still very valid.

The other thought is they may add a 1.6 crop camera to the fold.

Stay tuned, I might upgrade this to CR4...

Bad batch of S5 IS's?
Monday, August 18, 2008, 09:11 AM - Canon P&S
More QC issues
Apparently there's a batch of S5's in Canada that are DOA. It seems you can't fit memory cards in the camera. The local store here had 4 in stock and all 4 have the problem.

The store also had an XSi show the problem.

If anyone else has seen the problem outside of Canada, let me know.

6D Stuff [CR1.5]
Monday, August 18, 2008, 08:07 AM - Canon 3D & 6D
16.7mp...
This is from a thread at POTN.

16.7mp
Weatherseals
Live View
October/November Timeframe

Blah blah, there's no way in heck Canon would use the sensor from the 1dsmk2, the thing is 4-5 years old and the 5D sensor outperformed it in a lot of ways.

IF they use a current sensor to build the camera off of, it'll be from the 1D Mark III, except FF. I'm willing to bet it'll be an all new sensor.

5D Mark II Release Date
Is it coming Thursday? This person seems to think so.

From DPR

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readf ... d=28988490

I'm still saying closer to Photokina for an announcement.

Canon Lenses
Saturday, August 16, 2008, 10:07 AM - Canon Lenses
Where oh where is the 24-105? FOUND IT!
Canon UK has removed the 24-105 f/4L IS from its website.

http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product ... /index.asp

Could be a web guy playing games, could be telling us something.

UPDATE
A reader pointed out it was listed under the IS section. DOH! Thanks for the keen eye.

http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product ... /index.asp

What's coming
[CR3] 24-70 f/2.8L IS is coming down the pipeline, it's also picking up steam on various forums. This could be the new 5D kit lens.

[CR4] 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS also appears to be a done deal.

I spoke of these 2 lenses months ago.

[CR3] There's also a very good chance of a new 400mm lens. Which one? I'm not sure yet.

The obvious candidates for replacement.

A new 100-400 or new 400 f/5.6 with added IS.

Someone else has suggested Canon could release a 400 f/4L IS. Not a DO. There could be a big market for this such lens. It would probably be a lot less money too.

[CR2] Other suggestions I've received.

EF 100 f/2.8 IS Macro
EF 17-50 f/4L IS

Both of these lenses sound feasible, just not in the near future.

Opinion
Canon's lens lineup is missing a great performing ultra wide angle for full frame cameras. The 16-35 & 17-40 leave a lot to be desired at their widest focal range. Nikon's 14-24 is an amazing piece of glass, but quite useless for a lot of landscape photographers that use filters. Canon needs to release a new ultra wide that is out of this world and can be filtered. I know a couple landscape photographers that have gone from 17-40's to 24-70's just because they couldn't take the weaknesses anymore.

I know a lot of people agree with me.

The problem is the 16-35 II is relatively new, as is the 14 II. The only hope would be a replacement of the 17-40. Maybe we'll see a 2nd version in the next year or so.
