Can't use the R5 for agency weddings.. :-(

I have been using my pair of 5D3 for weddings..(and everything else) and have them set to 1/2 res, which is about 10MP, instead of 22mp for my agency weddings that I shoot. I was even told recently by one client, and by others in the past, that they do not want large High Res files... 12mp Max..! Upon ordering my R5, I would only imagine that they would have included smaller RAW file sizes... but nope... I'm stuck with 45mp RAW files, that take a long time for me to process on my iMac, and for my agency clients to upload, and process on their end.. Nice camera and all... but now, with both of my 5D3 bodies closing in on 300k shutter actuations.. I'll end up blowing 400ish $ on each body to get them ready for next season, unless Canon can make a change that should be a no-brainer.. IMO... Geezus Canon...!! I waited since July 19th to get this into my hands and now I see that I can't shoot a smaller RAZW file..??? I'm mad.
There are two points, first, why would you buy a camera so unsuitable for the job? The R6 would make far more sense. And two, if you still buy an unsuitable camera for your purposes why not just automatically resize all your images as a preset?

Further, if the client doesn’t need the full. editing headroom just shoot RAW and 10 bit heif’s at the size you do need.

Are we still getting an EOS R Mk II in 2020?

I very much like my EOS R but concede it's not a camera for action photography, it's the reason I've kept my 6D MKII as well.

As much as I'd like the R5, it is a big jump in price but I don't want the R6 as 20MP seems a step down for the 30MP EOS R.

An EOS R MKII with the R6/R5 focusing ability and 2 card slots or indeed an R6 MKII with 30mp would be my ideal camera but I doubt Canon will produce either anytime soon.

I wonder when Canon will launch a great mirrorless body for expert / advanced non-professional photographers, at a fair (of course...) price ?

Is VAT %21 percent of the final price (inclusive), or is it %21 added to the pre-tax price (exclusive), which would make it ~17.35 of the final price? You did that calculation as if it were inclusive, not exclusive.

[Equivalently, if the 21 percent is inclusive, it's equivalent to a 26.6% exclusive tax, in the US it would be like buying a $100 dollar item (our stated prices do not include tax) and getting $26.60 added to it at the cash register; 26.60 is ~21 percent of 126.60.]

Starting with his claim that €4600 is the price and is equivalent to $5400 (implied exchange rate of €1 = $1.174):

An exclusive computation takes $5400 and divides by 1.21 to get $4462 pre-tax. This is almost a thousand dollars less than the price paid. It's $562 above the US pre-tax price ($3900).

An inclusive computation takes $5400 and multiplies by .79 (taking 21 percent off the total) and yields $4266, which is $366 above the US pre-tax purchase price.

So basically all but either 366 or 562 dollars (or the equivalent in Euros) of the nominal price difference is due to the VAT (depending on whether the VAT rate is inclusive or exclusive).

That's why I said his complaint is with Europe. In fairness I should have said mostly with Europe. Comparing apples to apples, the price in the US (before tax) is closer to the European price (before tax) but once taxes are applied, the difference is much, much larger; he's paying $5400 whereas I paid $4221.75
It’s exclusive and I should’ve divided by 1.21 instead of asking google to deduct 21% :(

Is Canon working on smartphone addons? This design seems to suggest that they are

It's a very different device. It's a small stabilized camera working on its own. No need to attach it on a phone. I do believe the Powershoot Zoom could be a nice idea, but this ones reminds me of several phone add-ons that look good on paper but never went anywhere.

I agree. Sony QX series didn't last long.

May be it is time to try again with micro gimbal in the camera. The camera should be independent, and still could be attached to mobile phone or any other wearable place.

Check "Ordro EP7" camera for example. Idea is good, but lens and sensor are from 2008. Believe me! I ordered it and sent it back on day 2 after I got it.

Micro gimbaled 1" sensor and lens could be the "new" idea.

Here are the specifications for the Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM Macro

I love 85mm, but I've never loved my EF 85 1.8. My copy is not super sharp, even stopped down, and the lack of IS means I have to keep the shutter higher, negating some of the speed.
I must have been lucky with my copy. I bought it when refurbs were on sale. Before that, I was using the 100mm macro for portraits and didn't care for the look, though I really like the lens for macros and as a small telephoto. The 85mm exceeded my expectations, so I use it more than I had anticipated. As a portrait lens, I used it today to make a video of my singing something they will incorporate into a virtual choir for Sunday. That range of focal lengths puts full frame cameras a good distance so facial features look natural.

As for the RF, I can't imagine that f/2 will be that different from an f/1.8 per se.

Image quality of the Canon RF 24-105 mm F4-7.1 IS STM so good?

Considering you can buy this lens new from someone tossing it out of their R6 kit for $250, it's a steal. IQ from 35-105 at all distances is very sharp – at 24mm needs software correction and corner sharpening. Close-focus feature is pretty cool.

In point of fact someone just ordered the RP+this lens on another thread, and he proclaimed his intent to sell the lens.

Industry News: You can finally preorder the Zeiss ZX1, but it’ll cost you

With my M10M, since it is monochrome only, I"m guessing that chromatic aberration isn't quite a big a deal to me as for color shooters on the M system.
But if I could ever get the $$ together, I'd like that 50 sumicron APO...as that from what I've seen it has the best sharpness and contrast of most of the line.

Right now, with adapters, I'm playing with a lot of 3rd party and vintage lenses....old Nikkors, Pentax zoom (adapter coming in), Lomography Petzval, Helios (soon to get) ...so, I have plenty to get "looks" with....but would like 1-2 razor sharp lenses on the real Leica side.

This mostly just to be my convenient carry all the time camera when I don't want bulk.

The rest of the time, would be my 5D3 and GFX100....or assorted medium film format cameras (for unique aspect ratios)....depending on what I intend to shoot at that time.

But with the $$$'s I've laid out this year, for the most part, I"m done buying equipment, I HAVE to...ahaha.

But that's cool, I have plenty of toys for a good while to come. And over 2021...I'll look into the R5 and see what they've done with firmware updates, as well as get a closer picture on what the R1 will look like and cost.

I'm desperately hoping that 2021 gets us more back to normal with respect to gatherings....I missed out shooting JazzFest 2020 here in New Orleans....since they had to cancel it.

The people in charge there said that the people selected for this year, would be first choice for next year, so, hoping for that.
I was figuring if I didn't get a R5 for that, I'd take the trusty 5D3 for longer shots, and the GFX100 for medium, wider shots and could easily crop in on that one if needed.

Hmm..with all that weight...I'd better get started NOW on losing weight and getting the shoulders and legs in shape!!
;)

Wish I could figure how to bring the Leica M10M on that JF shoot, but then again, dunno if I feel that comfortable with carrying a good downpayment on a house worth of equipment in and out of the fairgrounds, I'd hate to get mugged with THAT!!

Boling RGB light

I know there are many photographer/videographers out there that really like the Boling RGB lights with built in arm. Through midnight tonight, Oct 26, 2020, B&H has it on their daily specials sale for a very low price of $99.00, for anyone wanting this light. That's roughly $20.00 cheaper than the best price normally found on Ebay for this light.

Review: Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM by TDP

This lens won’t be as popular as the 100-400 mk1 and 2... because of this huge price step again....
I can buy the mk2 for ~1300€ in 2nd market and for around 2k€ new. Sometimes with cashback of 200+€.

yeah it’s sharp, light but not that bright as I espected. Maybe for 1500€ but not for >3.000€!

True true... but that argument will never work to convince manufacturers to drop the price.

Or rather... if you are selling a lens used you better not be asking for the price of a new and the lastest tech lens around!!

I never get this logic. Like why buy into the RF system at all? Compared to the R5 + 100-500, you can get a 5DIV and a 100-400 on the used market for HALF the price!!! Tsk tsk, what is canon thinking asking those prices for the former combo?? :p

R5 shutter button soft?

It is on mine as well. The spring is weaker than my R but otherwise about the same.

I have almost no feeling in my fingers so I usually glue a raised button to the shutter button which helps me locate and operate it by feel. I stick it on with one of the little Jot removable adhesive pieces so it falls off once or twice a year. I make the buttons from thick leather and a leather punch. A dozen of them takes just a few leather scraps and a minute. They used to sell similar things at crazy prices, they cost nothing to make. The trick is to use temporary adhesive that won't flow in heat or dry hard and become permanent. Since they cost less than a penny, I don't mind them occasionally falling off.

Thank you! thought it was just me

FedEx Option for Expensive Gear

I live near a fedex hub so I opt to have my package be picked up, but not because of contractors, just so I don't have to wait all day for it to arrive. I did however recently use B&H's upgraded delivery to get something before they closed for Sukkot and it was only like $17 for a next day or 2 day delivery to CA, well worth it IMO.

Isn't it amazing how people into photography get an education on Jewish holidays?
