Canon to Launch Two Flexible Cine Zooms in April

A reliable source indicates Canon will launch two very bright Cinema EOS lenses, featuring a T stop of 2.0. The wider lens will start from between 14 and 20mm and top out somewhere between 40 and 60mm. The longer lens will start between 30 and 45mm and extend to 80 to 90mm.
The lenses are natively designed for the Super 35 sensor size, but will be able to use an enlarging converter mounted to the camera end of the lens that will convert it to a full frame T2.8 zoom.
The lenses appear to be replacements for the existing CN 15.5-47mm and CN 30-105mm lenses, which are similar but unable to cover a full frame sensor
The lenses will reportedly come in both EF and PL mounts.

Multiple Slow Motion Settings on the C70?

Hi, Canon Rumors:

I have a new C70, and I'm trying to figure out how to have a few custom settings, IF possible.

If I want to shoot mostly in 60 fps (for a 30fps timeline), but want two other main shooting modes, 120 fps and 30 fps (also for a 30 fps timeline), can I set up the C70 to switch to each mode with a single click? So far, I can't figure this out ----again, I'd like to kind of settle in 60, then have the option to switch quickly to each of the other modes (30 and 120), if necessary.

This was a breeze on the GH5---but might not be doable on the C70?

Thanks for your time, either way.

Canon’s roadmap includes 32 new lenses by 2026 according to Canon’s CEO

Canon published its annual business outlook this morning. Statements attributed directly to Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai indicate the firm expects to keep releasing lenses at the same pace (8 per year, according to Canon) for the next four years.
Mitarai’s comments in the notes of the presentation show a goal of becoming the number one mirrorless camera producer in the world. He stated that the camera market is bottoming out from a sales perspective, although from a unit perspective there may continue to be a decline due to continued attrition at the low end of the market.
Increase profits are expected from squeezing more efficiencies in production and “design efficiencies,” perhaps like those seen with the re-use of super telephoto lens designs between models.
New sales generators are expected in the “PowerShot” markets...

DDOS Attack Takes Down Russian Source of Canon Pre-Release Details

Once every few months a new Canon product shows up on the Russian regulatory site that deals with electronics radio emissions licensing. It has long been the source of occasional product detail leaks that Canon filings reveal prior to actual announcements. Except, in Russia, this department also happens to be one of the primary bureaucracies censoring the internet most Russians are able to see. Yesterday and today, the site has been down – due, apparently, to a distributed denial of service attack.
A camera news site that for the past two years has been keeping track of photo product applications from Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development Communications and Mass Media – reported that the outage started yesterday and has continued unabated since.

New Canon EOS R3 orders may be delayed for more than 6 months

Canon updated its uniquely-Japanese “Apology and Guidance” announcement, revealing that new orders of the EOS R3 body and also the RF 14-35 f/4 lens can take more than half a year to deliver due partly to supply constraints, but also because of demand “in excess of expectations.”
A list of products taking merely “longer than usual” to deliver includes the RF 16mm f/2.8, the RF 400mm f/2.8, and – interestingly – the not-yet-released RF 800mm and the RF 1200mm.

Kamlan introduces it’s first full frame lens – available for the RF mount

Kamlan has made some interesting APS-C lenses in the past, and now they look to branch out into the full-frame market.  With no electronic connections, it’s all manual focus and aperture settings, but you get a 55mm F1.4 lens for usually an excellent bang for the buck if their previous APS-C F 50mm F1.1 is any indication which happens to retail for $249.

The specifications of the lens are;

Focal length: 55mm
Full-frame compatible
Angle of view: 40.5 °
Open F value: F1.4
Lens configuration: 8 elements in 6 groups
Number of aperture blades: 13 elements

Atomos Ninja V Update Unlocks R5C ProRes RAW

As expected, an Atomos Ninja V firmware update will allow Canon R5C owners to record externally in Apple’s ProRes RAW format.  The firmware released this morning.
While the update is free, unlocking the ProRes RAW feature will require a registration via Atomos’s website.
That feature allows ProRes recording in 6K resolution (at framerates ranging from 23.98p to 29.97p) and 3K (from 23.98p through 59.94p).
Full release notes can be found here.

New rumor of Supertelephoto DO’s and the R1 [CR2]

According to a reliable rumor source (thank you!) Canon is testing prototypes of the following DO super telephotos;

RF 400mm f/3.5 DO IS USM
RF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM
RF 500mm f/4.5 DO IS USM
RF 500mm f/5 DO IS USM
RF 800mm f/9.5 DO IS USM

According to the source, only one of these is expected to make it out of the prototype and into production.  The 500mm lenses have had the best results so far, with one of them currently in the wild.
While we didn’t have an RF 500mm DO IS USM on our roadmap, with current supply chain delays Canon may be forced to do something out of order with these lenses.
Interestingly, the source states that Canon hopes to announce this lens either with an actual announcement or development announcement in conjunction with the R1 announcement.   The source mentions that production delays may force Canon to do just a development announcement for this lens this year.  The source is certainly implying that the R1 announcement is expected later on this year.

Your perfect next M body?

As much as canon is pushing the R, I simply have no desire whatsoever. I love the tiny M system, love it. But I want better
Currently using a pair of M50’s backed up by the M10/100 bodies (all share the same battery)
I’m just not remotely interested in the M6/M6ii as I don’t want a separate EVF.
My dream M body would be a clone of the Panasonic GX9 body

EVF to the left
Tilt screen
Tilt EVF
Hot shoe

If canon could somehow incorporate the flip up tilting back flash too that would be incredible.

There’s no possibility whatsoever of me being drawn to the R or the proposed Aps-c version of the R
Just not going to happen.

I’ve still got my vast dslr system that isn’t going anywhere, certainly not trading it in either.

So, what’s your ideas for the next generation of M bodies??

come tell…

Diving into the Canon RF 1200mm F8L and the Canon RF 800mm F5.6L

CanonNews created an article going through the RF 800mm and the RF 1200mm lenses. Like many of you, the sticker shock of 17K and 20K was a surprise to me as well.
This article looks into the MTFs and tries to find a good reason to actually spend the extra money.  It really comes down to whether or not you have the desire with 400 or 600mm lenses to stack Canon extenders.  With the “inherent” 2x extender built into the 800mm and 1200mm lenses, you have the ability to take that to 1600 and 2400mm – focal lengths you cannot achieve using Canon extenders and the 400mm and 600mm lens, unless you use the soon to be discontinued Canon EF super telephotos (conspiracy there?).  From the article;
If you have an R3, then these lenses are for you if you are needing to stack extenders using the more conventional RF 400 or RF 600mm lenses. If you have the EF versions of these lenses, then no, avoid...

Viewing Luts?

Does anyone know if you can load luts into the R3 so that when shooting RAW you can output something to an external monitor that is a little more pleasing then the regular view assist? I know that you can load luts into things like the NINJA V and ATOMOS monitors but it would be nice to be able to view it thru the EVF as well

Will Canon come out with a 4K ONLY camera?

Hey All,

I was anticipating the R5 to be my next camera, only shooting up to 4KHQ 24P and sometimes using 120p. However, as we know the R5 overheats even in 4K HQ 24P.

Even if it doesn’t overheat, the HEVC file format does not work with most up-to-date PCs. Now that the R5c is out things seem to be better however there are still downsides like bad battery life. Hopefully it’s not as bad with just 4K. It’s also a shame the body is bigger, I was hoping for the same body size.

Does anyone know if Cannon has plans to just make a solid 4K HQ type of camera?

I am leaning to buy the R5C as this is the only option but again if there was just a solid focused 4K type camera there wouldn’t be such an overheating problem and the battery life would be fine too and the camera would probably be smaller.

On the other hand if the R5 had a firmware update to allow XF-AVC I would definitely buy that.

Does anyone know if there will be a future firmware update for the R5 to allow XF-AVC or if a 4K focused camera will come out?

Canon RF 1200mm Details Leak: Weighs only 0.25kg more than the RF 600mm f/4L IS USM

Two days early, the press release details of the coming RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM leaked, and there are a few pleasant surprises. First among them is that the lens weighs just a bit more the RF 600mm f/4 lens, which is already very light for that focal length. A person Digicame-Info believes was the author of the now-defunct Nokishita blog posted posted the press release detailing the specs.
The minimum focus distance (MFD) is 4.3m, also roughly the same as the 600mm f/4, which means its maximum magnification will be twice that of the smaller lens. Doing the math, this means that a human head would completely fill the frame at MFD.

Not noted on the release are the lens dimensions.
For those with a glutton for focal length, the 1200mm lens does take both the 1.4x and the 2x teleconverters, rendering as much as a 2400mm f/16 equivalent...

First Leaked Images of the RF 800mm F5.6L IS USM and the RF 1200mm F8L IS USM

These are the first leaked pictures of the upcoming Canon RF 800mm F5.6L IS USM and the Canon RF 1200mm F8L IS USM. Both of these lenses have been on our roadmap for quite some time.
The 1200mm is most definitely a normal optic (a monster lens at that) and not a catadioptric lens.
From the image, they’re going to be announced on February 24th.

Industry News: Panasonic launches the Lumix GH6

The Panasonic GH series has been a video powerhouse for what seems to be, well, decades.  Panasonic has built on top of the legacy and released the GH6, which can do 5.7K at 60fps, built-in fan, and more.  Basically a smaller sensor and non 8K version of the R5C ;)
For $2199 it’s bound to be a hot seller.  You can pre-order the GH6 here.

A high megapixel camera is coming [CR2]

A reliable source just whispered (thank you!) that Canon is coming out with a new camera.  The source said that the camera will be 75MP.   This has been long rumored since the RF mount came out.
It’s no surprise that Canon is coming out with a high-megapixel camera.  Canon is pretty proud of the megapixel crown from the start of the digital era – they were not going to let Sony have that crown for long.
No other details are known, but if I had to guess I would suspect it would be based upon the R5.
We expect more information soon.

Free Tilt/shift lens webinar Tuesday 22nd Feb

If anyone is interested in a webinar about tilt/shift lenses and their use, I've been invited to do one tomorrow (22nd Feb 2022) at 17:30 GMT - nominally an hour, but I'm doing it from home, so no specific end point on my account

It's been organised by BenQ and a local UK camera dealer (Park), but is almost all me talking about T/S lenses

There is a Q&A element at the end as well

Oh, and I'm sure I'll happen to mention my book about T/S lenses...

The sign-up page is at https://bit.ly/3ovqnjt

I hope it will be of interest - this is the first time I've tried this, so fingers crossed on the technical side of things

Canon China Teases ‘New Companion’ Coming Feb 24

Canon China is much more active on social media than in many other regions. Its Weibo account this morning published a teaser (Chinese) featuring a large, gold number three, and writing that states, “The new friend you’ve been waiting for is finally here; see you here in three days.”
A QR code at the bottom leads to a live event site showing a countdown to February 24 at 7 p.m. local time, seemingly suggesting a product launch.
Canon-Teaser-for-2-24-22-168x168.png
Commenters on Canon’s Chinese social media feeds do not appear to have any earlier references, and are using (much as English-speaking comment boards tend to do) the open-ended teaser as a bit of a Rorschach test of personal hopes and desires. An R7 and an RP II have been speculated, but then so have some pretty crazy ideas...

OpticalLimits reviews the Canon EOS RF 16mm F2.8 STM

OpticalLimits is one of my favorite review sites, and they recently completed their review of the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM.
First, let’s face facts, the Canon RF 16mm is the cheapest ever full frame 16mm that has ever been produced by an original camera manufacturer.  Ever.   There are going to be some compromises to its performance.

There are usually three main contributors to lens design;

Cost
Size / Weight
Quality

Each one of these factors affects the other.  In the case of the RF 16mm F2.8 you have a small, light, and cheap 16mm ultra-wide prime.  Quality is going to suffer.
If any of you have been following my patent application commentary over the years at CanonNews – you’ll know that I’ve been very outspoken about Canon’s trends on making the image circle smaller on lenses. It isn’t an uncommon thing in Canon’s patent applications.  However, while doing...

Bird Photography in and around Miami

HI all,

Hope you're all doing well
First time I create a thread here so hopefully I'm abiding by the rules and not posting in the wrong space but if any admin deems moving it to a different subform appropriate please do! (also if you think it might get more attention elsewhere, though I might be asking you to do what I should have done in the first place )

I know there are many of you reading and writing from the US of A plus many others that have travelled the world so, thought this is a good place to start my research/planning.

I'll be travelling to Miami this coming April for two weeks.
It's is a family holiday/family visit so not a photography dedicated trip, although it should play a good part in it.
I was wondering if anyone here knows of good places in and around south Miami to photograph birds, but with some level of family friendliness to them?
Also, best species to aim for since I don't want to get my hopes up for very tricky stuff but rather look for your more common birds that for me will be very exotic anyway.
I know I can JFGI and I indeed have, but I always like some first hand experience and local knowledge since that's provided some absolute gems in the past when travelling.

I'd love to photograph a cardinal, which I guess for most of you might be like robins are for us here in the UK but something about them has me quite obsessed.

Anyway, any help will be highly appreciated

Thanks!!
