RF 16mm f/2.8 STM...Interestingly Poor Yet Good Performance

As it seems to be the trend these days with Canon, a budget lens has been released where distortion correction can't be disabled in camera and is forced on. I took this new little lens on a beautiful hike today and took a few sample shots with it - I was primarily there to unwind and capture some wildlife with my Fuji X-T4. I took several shots and was honestly surprised how it appeared to be performing (my good experience with the forced correction RF 14-35 fresh on the back of my mind). When I got back into the car I "pixel peeped" the corners pretty hard and identified some fuzziness of the fine details even stopped down quite a bit. This indicated to me that there was certainly some mischievous amounts of corrections being applied to these images. Boy...I had not idea just how incredible discovery awaited me back on my computer.

So I'm just going to post these photos as I could best match the "cut off point" for the corrections. Please keep in mind that the JPEGs coming out of the camera are indeed 45mp. However, you can see from these examples that Canon is providing some bombastic corrections to the photo. I've reduced the JPEG size to best illustrate where the corners of the final image actually begin and overlaid them on an uncorrected SOOC RAW file. There is a lot of software stretching going on here to make the image work. The lens is more of a 14mm that is essentially pulled into shape by the camera. On the RF 14-35, the final image looks absolutely magnificent and if we didn't know it was going on, we wouldn't have suspected any Tomfoolery as afoot.

As a side note, the lens works magnificent for video and I believe that was the entire basis for the creation of this lens. As a photo lens...just don't expect much in the way of fine detail in the corners unless you crop it down further to 17 or 18mm. The final images look pretty decent and I don't want to draw too much negativity toward this lens, but it's worth noting that corrections are once again essential to the use of RAW images. Canon and Adobe need to sit down and talk about releasing firmware updates accordingly because here we are over a month later and the RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM isn't supported. I already dished out $1700 and created my own profiles for 14mm and 16mm, but I need the REAL correction profiles for these lenses to use them professionally. If Canon doesn't come up with a profile for the 14-35 by the end of the year I will be selling it.

Canon sued for Disabling Scanner of AIO when ink runs out.

Class action lawsuit filed against Canon for disabling scanner when printers run out of ink. I guess even Canon will stoop to new low for generating profits.

Canon tech specialist talks the Canon EOS R3

We have about 5 more weeks to wait before the Canon EOS R3 hits the streets for the lucky few.
Canon tech specialist Dave Parry talks to Clifton Camera about the features, specifications and technology in the Canon EOS R3.
There were actually a few bits of new information that I picked up from this presentation, but you may already know it all.

The Canon EOS R system turns 3 and Lensrentals.com gives us a breakdown of its progression

The Canon EOS R system launched on September 5, 2018, and began hitting the streets in October of the same year. Commemorating the 3-year anniversary of the new system, Lensrentals.com has done a nice article on the progression of the system.
What Canon has accomplished in 3 years is pretty remarkable when everything the system has to offer is broken down. I would think the system would be even further along if not for all of the challenges that the pandemic has had on labour, manufacturing and logistics.
If we just look at EOS R...

Canon EOS R3 will begin shipping on November 26, 2021

It looks like Canon USA has given the Canon EOS R3 an official ship date of November 26, 2021. The official announcement back in September said that the EOS R3 would launch in “November”, so now we have an official date. Some retailers are still showing November 30, 2021, but I’m sure that will be updated in the next little while.
I don’t expect every preorder to be met with the first batch and the Canon EOS R3 will likely be hard to find well into 2022.

6DII + 50mm 1.2 or R6 + 50mm 1.8

Hi everyone,

I need some advice please.

Currently I'm using the following Canon equipment:

6DII
24-70 2.8 II
70-200 2.8 II
17-40 4.0
50mm 1.8
85mm 1.8

...as well as some lighting equipment.

For now I'm totally happy with bokeh, shutter speed, color, detail, etc. I don't need 4k video cause I have a Sony film camera for that, which is great. The only thing I miss is decent low light performance! I would like to be able to shoot indoors at 1/100, or at least 1/80, without the use of artficial light.

I'm not sure whether my next move should be a 50mm 1.2, or an R6.
What do you guys think??

Thanks in advance.

It’s back! The 5DayDeal Photography Bundle is all new for 2021 and it’s the best one yet

Heres that one thing that holds so many back! In the beginning, most photographers spend the bulk of their time learning new tricks and techniques, pining over educational resources that will turn them into the creative they aspire to be, and working on their business chops. Somewhere along the lines, though, most of those individuals stop seeking new knowledge. Despite the rapidly changing technology and trends, they just stop, and then their work becomes obsolete. So the final tip I am going to provide today is this: NEVER STOP LEARNING.
While this global pandemic may have taken much from us, one benefit is that online learning is at an all-time high! More resources are available to us than ever before, and the quality of these learning resources is astonishing—never before have we seen online education this thorough, and for the next 5 days, it’s affordable too!
Learn more about the 5DayDeal...

Industry News: Nikon posts another Nikon Z 9 teaser video, showcasing its 8K capabilities

Nikon has posted the second of four teasers for the upcoming Nikon Z 9, their flagship mirrorless camera body. Some describe it as a D850 and D6 in one camera body with some added features.
The first teaser came out last week.

Nikon Z 9 Rumored Specifications from Nikon Rumors

The Z9 will be capable of up to 120 fps in a lower res file size (6Mb I think). Some reports even indicated 160 fps!
Built-in GPS – probably GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System).
The Z9 will use the same battery as D6. There will be also a new 18-type battery (EN-EL18x) that can be charged by the camera’s USB-C.
The sensor has a multi-leaf blade...

It looks like there is an R5 firmware version 1.50 on the way.

If you read the description for the RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens, it mentions that you need firmware version 1.50 or later (see this link):

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/...lenses/ef/vr/rf5-2mm-f2-8-l-dual-fisheye-lens

“Add a whole new dimension to your story with the RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens. As part of the EOS VR System – this lens paired with the EOS R5 updated with firmware 1.5.0 or higher and one of Canon's VR software solutions - you can create immersive 3D that can be experienced when viewed on compatible head mount displays including the Oculus Quest 2 and more.* ”

The * links to a footnote that says:
“*Must be paired with the Canon EOS R5 camera equipped with firmware update version 1.5.0 or later and utilize Canon EOS VR Software solution(s) (paid subscription). Viewing in 3D requires the use of a compatible Head Mount Display.”

The Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM sells for a record €500,000 at auction

It looks like my bid of $1500 and a case of Loads of Ketchup chips wasn’t the winning bid for the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM at the Wezlar Camera Auction that took place this past Saturday.
The Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM sold for a camera lens record €500,000 ($575,000USD) once the hammer hit. Previous copies of this lens have tended to sell in the $100,000 – $120,000 range.
From Wetzlar Camera Auctions:
A Canon telephoto lens EF 1200 mm f/5.6 from the 1990s achieved a particularly spectacular result. Only around 20 specimens of this lens were originally produced on special order only at the time. The then original list price was already U.S. $ 90,000. Two customers who were connected by telephone engaged in an exciting bidding war, so that the lens was finally hammered for fabulous EUR 500,000. It is the highest price ever achieved at auction for a camera lens in the world.

Patent: Canon RF 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM for APS-C sensor

A Canon RF 18-45mm lens has been on the Canon Rumors RF lens roadmap for quite some time, and I have always thought it was a weird choice for full-frame cameras, I have thought in the past that the lens would work well for both full-frame and APS-C image sensors.
A new patent from Canon shows an RF 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 for what appears to be an APS-C sensor.  I say RF because I don’t believe there will be any new EF-M lenses, though this patent may just be to protect design ideas and won’t come to market.
The image height of 12.44mm-13.66mm lines up with an APS-C application.

Goblin Valley State Park and scene along the way

I took a camping trip up to Goblin Valley State park in Utah and camped a few days. My primary reason for going was to shoot the Milky Way (it's a registered Dark Sky area). But I took many other pictures on the trip up from Utah and also in the area in and around Goblin. The Milky Way was shot at a place called Wild Horse Butte.
