Patent: RF cinema zoom lenses

Canon News has uncovered a patent that appears to show RF mount cinema zoom lenses. It looks like these are cinema lenses because of their complexity and larger image height of 14mm. APS-C lenses from Canon tend to have an image height of 13.66mm.

Will the Canon EOS R5s come with a pixel shift like feature? [CR2]

I have received very few tidbits about the coming high-megapixel RF mount camera coming from Canon, but that has started to change over the last couple of weeks.
Anything in the quotes below is directly from what I have been told. The information sent did require a bit of reading between the lines, and I’ve done my best to be accurate.
I have been told the following about the coming Canon EOS R5s (Unofficial name):

Approxamently 90mp sensor
“Pixel-shift like feature” to add resolution (Perhaps like Fujifilm’s feature in the GFX 100?). Total resolution “north of 300mp”.
Nearly identical body design as the Canon EOS R5.
Video features are “NOT a focus” of the Canon EOS R5s.
Image stabilization will be a “slightly different version” than the current RF mount cameras.
Pricing will be “similar” to the Canon EOS R5.
Announcement scheduled for Q1 of 2021 (All announcements are still a moving target for...

R6 Video & Photo Memory Settings?

I have an M50 I purchased and wondering if the R6 works the same way:

I can be in video mode and change my ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed, then switch to M (Manual photo) mode and change all 3 settings. When I return to video mode, the setting I previously made in video mode (not the Manual photo mode) remain in the video mode. So basically I am saying that the setting changes made in each mode remain only in that mode (another way of wording it: my changes made in one mode do not carry over to the other mode).

Does the R6 work the same way?

I was planing to purchase the R (which I understand does work the way as described above) before it came out but was disappointed that it did not have IBIS so I held off and got the M50 instead.

I like that my M50 has the Video and M mode right next to each other on the mode dial, but the R6 does not. I can live with that, but the setting carrying over between mode I am not sure about.

Canon R5 vs C70

Within the last 2 months, business shifted from 80% photography / 20% video to 80% video / 20% photography. Through my research, I identified the Canon C70 as the rig to address this change. I do not require anything beyond 4k 120fps. And I love that all of my Canon EF lenses will function with the C70. As I continued researching the C70, I realized it would not fulfill the photography needs. I considered setting up both the 1DX and C70 on separate tripods so I could swap between them as required. Until this evening, I was one of the "no way am I transitioning to mirrorless at this time". Then I discovered the EOS R5. The specs shows that it performs better than my 1DX M2 and has excellent video options. I am aware of the heating issues, but my video captures consist of video clips less than 30 (90% of the time) and video clips with a max 2 minutes (2% of the time).

The R5 costs less than the C70. The R5 outperforms the 1DX M2. Based on what I see (spec sheets), the R5 is damn close, if not better than the C70 for video for my intended use. What am I missing here? Where does the C70 outperform the R5?

Thank you.

50 mm to 800 mm Fast all-Acrylic Super-Zoom Lens for Canon EF/EF-M, RF, Sony E-Mount and Fuji MF being beta-tested now!

HEADLINE:

50 mm to 800 mm Fast all-Acrylic Super-Zoom Lens for Canon EF/EF-M, RF, Sony E-Mount and Fuji MF being beta-tested now!

YES! You heard that right!

An under-the-radar Canadian Company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is now now beta-testing in the wild as of December 2020 its new 50 mm to 800 mm sports/wildlife/action super-zoom lens that specifically uses optical-grade all-Acrylic lens elements.

Breathing, Coma and Chromatic Aberrations are minimized by using a Fujinon-based Broadcast Television Servo Zoom Sports Lens Design from 1995 that has had its patents expire.

Using PREMIUM-QUALITY Japanese lens design and adapting it by using high refractive index all-Acrylic lens elements (1.523 vs fluorite glass 1.433) allows for more light gathering power at two-thirds the weight of glass lenses! An all-aluminum barrel body (8000 series aerospace-grade aluminum) allows for weather-sealed ruggedness in an attractive but stealthy lens design.

Polymer Shift (aka Glass Creep) has been almost fully eliminated to fluorite glass levels by using a proprietary heating/cooling process that keeps the crystalline structure of each Acrylic lens element stable for a computer-simulated 250 year+ calculated life-span. Photo-degradation via multi-band Ultraviolet and Infrared light exposure has ALSO been eliminated by using a proprietary set of coatings on the first and last lens elements.

The Top-10 Features:

1) FAAAAAST All-Acrylic coated and photo-stable L-IR/S-IR/UV-A/B/C-resistant lens elements with a 1.523 refractive index at f/4 to f/5.6

2) Zoom focal range from 50 mm to 800 mm

3) Cinema-grade Parfocal design keeping focus perfect throughout the zoom-range.

4) Cinema-quality slow zoom capability and NO clicking on the iris (i.e. Iris is de-clicked!)

5) Built-in 10 Stop ND filter

6) 2x extender compatible which turns the lens into 70 mm to 1600 mm for those super-long shots.

7) Works with Canon EF-to-RF lens adapter for R5/R6 series, Sony E-mount and Fuji MF lens mounts

8) Comes with coated all-Acrylic polarizing filter to ensure minimal reflections and lens flare.

9) Grippy and rugged weather-sealed barrels with large CINEMA-grade Iris ring and Focus rings and on-board user-settable rack-focus and zoom hard-stops so you perform and repeat perfect manual zooms and rack focus every time.

10) large-text self-illuminating f-stop and focal range markers for low-light level shooting.

AND WHAT IS THE PRICE???

ONLY $1899 USD ordered directly from the manufacturer!

(i.e. it's better than the Sigma 150 mm to 600 mm Sports Zoom having much more zoom capability at the same price)

PLUS this ENTIRE LENS is "Made In Canada" with premium quality control of all micro-machined Acrylic lens elements and the entire all-Aluminum barrel is precision-made and finished in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in a laboratory-grade clean-room environment -- Lens assembly is FULLY-AUTOMATED with NO HUMANS touching any part of any lens until final interferometry-based QA testing and final packaging. NO lens will leave the factory unless specified to comprehensive cinema-grade quality assurance and testing! We aim to give you ultra High-end Japanese and German lens quality at very affordable price points.

We will announce specific ordering website URLs and availability dates second quarter 2021 (i.e. around May 2021!)

Shipping will be IMMEDIATE as we will be building up enough stock to allow for IMMEDIATE ORDER AND SHIPMENT without delay around the world! If Fedex/UPS/DHL/Post delivers Express to your part of the world, then you will get it fast!

OTHER ALL-ACRYLIC CINEMA-GRADE PRIME AND ZOOM LENSES with built-in ND filters are coming soon!

----

......Soooooo, what do ya say to all that kiddos!

I think that will SCARE Canon, Sigma, Fuji/Fujinon, Sony to no end when THAT lens comes out. I've been to the factory in Vancouver. That lens is Very Real and it works VERY VERY WELL ------ i've used Zeiss Master Primes and Leica Summilux-C lenses and have daily access to the Zeiss Otus series so I think I am more than qualified to make a comment on actual lens quality and perceived lens weight.

It's well balanced weight-wise and with me having almost daily use of this lens:

Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Canon EF:

I am also qualified to state that I think this is a much better lens than the Sigma Sports Zoom. It definitely seems to look BRIGHTER which seems to imply it is actually a FASTER lens than the Sigma. Just by the Acrylic vs Glass refractive index alone, it should come out to have about 6% more light gathering power than the Sigma.

I have warned the manufacturer previously about the photo-degradation issue for Acrylic lenses vs Glass lenses but I have been assured the proprietary lens coatings and lens element micro-structures were computer simulated out to 250 years of daily 16 hours per day multi-band IR and UV light exposure. which means they won't turn Yellow or start the "Glass Creep" process which would create wavy-lines in an image. Super-hard Anti-scratch coatings are ALSO PRESENT which should negate issues with the softer surface of Acrylic lenses!

My ONLY WISH is that it have Hollywood Cinema-specific T-stop markers and a rocker-switch Servo motor so I can put it on my B4 mount Betacam-SX-style Broadcast News camcorders. The company is not focusing on the cinema market at this time but said they are creating hybrid lenses DESIGNED for modern hybrid DSLR/Mirrorless Stills/Video cameras at affordable price points and longer focal lengths.

They are focusing on long-focal range ZOOM AND PRIME LENSES for now! Their next lens is an FF and MF sensor-specific 14 mm super-wide to 55 mm zoom at f/2.8 throughout which ALSO will have a built-in 10 stop ND filter for $1599 USD!

They ALSO let me test me a prototype of a 1200 mm Telephoto at f/4 that will be a heck of a lot cheaper and faster than this one:

It will POSSIBLY be set at $5999 USD direct from the factory!

I actually DO THINK that Canon might want quake in their boots more than just a tiny bit, as I have been quite assured there will be enough inventory available for immediate shipping on ALL these lenses! Sooooooo, it looks like FAAAAAST WELL-COATED ACRYLIC LENS ELEMENTS are the WAY OF THE FUTURE for DSLR/Mirrorless camera!

Capturing great images in very dark sceneries using a EOS R5 and a bright F/1.2 lens. Worth to buy a dedicated lens?

Hi, I am fortunate to own a EOS R5. I like to shoot in different light conditions including at night or when it is quite dark.
In those dark conditions, bumping the ISO over 6400 even if I shoot RAW might not preserve too well the soft quality of the image and might add some grain and/or I can still not catch all the image's shade in te darker area.
Currently I own a RF 16-35mm F/2,8 and an RF 70-200mm F/2,8.

So I am wondering if you think it is worth, as I do mostly street photography, to buy a brighter F/1,2 lens like the RF 50mm or 85mm or should not really matter?

Canon is thinking about more lenses like the RF 600mm f/11 STM and RF 800mm f/11 STM

Canon’s Kengo Iezuka suggested recently in an interview with Mynavi News that Canon is considering more lenses like the RF 600mm f/11 STM and RF 800mm f/11 STM super-telephoto lenses. He notes that these types of lenses weren’t possible on DSLRs because of the autofocus technological differences between a mirrorless and a DSLR.
“This lens has a darker F11 opening value, but it can be said that it was born because of the EOS R, which can use high-speed and high-precision AF even at such an opening value.”
Mr. Iezuka was asked specifically about the possibility of an RF 400mm f/8 STM to complete a trilogy of super small super-telephoto lenses. It sounded like something he wanted to see by saying “It would be nice to have it completed”.
I think the sales numbers of the RF 600 f/11 STM and RF 800 f/11 STM will determine if Canon continues with these lenses, as they did take a bit of a gamble investing development dollars into...

Suggestions for testing R6/R5 IBIS?

I'd like to do some simple tests of IBIS, but if I do them on a tripod, would the results be meaningful? And if I did them handheld, how do I convince myself, much less Canon CPS, that my technique is not causing problems?

I'm beginning to see pretty consistent problems with slight motion blur in the 1/250th-1/600th sec. shutter speed range when IBIS is on. It can happen on an EF lens with IBIS, such as the ef 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro which I use for walkaround and portraits sometimes, or on the EF 35mm f/1.4L II. It's happening in both ECFS and mechanical shutter modes, so I'm definitely suspecting IBIS--not shutter shock.

I've suspected some issues with RF lens IS for a while now, even when they are on the R, but I'm consistently seeing these issues with adapted EF lenses on the R6. I'll get one shot in focus, subject standing still, and then the next two or three just showing a little blur, not tack sharp, and then the next few sharp again. This is happening in bursts where I don't think I'm jerking while holding the camera, but how can I be sure?

My idea is to use a mannequin to take shots with IBIS on and off, but if I'm doing this handheld because that's when we use IBIS, how do I eliminate handshake as a significant factor? Just keep repeating until I have a clear trend (or not)?

Thanks!

Eos R5 now with internal fan?!?!

I was lucky to be able to pick up an R5 from one local dealer who got only one R5 shipped to him! (No other national dealers in Denmark are currently able to get ny stock from canon)
Ive only had it for a couple of days so i have not had the time (or the HDD space) to test the max recording times on this new run of bodies.
BUT i just notised a definet hum coming from the camera when powered on. And it shure does sound like the uneven rubling from an internal fan... Complete with ramp up and down when turning on and off the camera.
I might be able to make a recording of the noize at the office tomorrow.... And do a heat test in 4k fine!
Or maybee im wrong and its just my tinitus kicking in at oddley specific times

EOS R discounted Black Friday & beyond?

Hello everyone,

Here in the US, the EOS R is discounted for 'Black Friday' Holiday sale; $1599.
My question: will this price be revisited in the coming months? Will it be cheaper a few months from now as Canon makes plans to expand their RF mount line-up?
I'm in no rush to get a EOS R body, but if it does drop in price more... I can wait. Any speculation/prognosticators help?

Canon R5 horizontal band/stripe of shadow under dimmed lighting

Hi. I got my Canon EOS R5 in the first batch in late July this year. I primarily use two lenses, R5 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM, as well as EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS II w/ an EF-RF converter.

The other day I was just shooting my daughter's new gold fish under the fish tank's "moonlight" LED light w/ the RF Macro lens, and to my dismay there were horizontal stripes/bands of shadow that would be in the final images saved.

A few days later I tried both lenses shooting the Christmas tree, and the horizontal shadowy bands appeared again, again under dimmed light. It appears to be most pronounced when using the Fv mode, and least pronounced w/ the Av mode. I also noticed if the ISO is high, the shadowy bands show up (even when auto ISO is selected, and when it results in high ISO). If I manually select ISO 100 or 200, then it's barely there. Once you hit ISO 400, then it starts to show up prominently.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar experiences? I am not sure if this is an inherent limitation of R5 under dimmed lighting and high ISO? Or the R5 I got is defective and I should have it fixed?

Thanks.

R6 can't shoot video in shutter priority, only full manual?

Hey guys,
This seems really strange unless I'm missing something, but is there a way to shoot video on R6 where you can set aperture and auto exposure?
I could only find either fully automated mode which doesn't allow you to set aperture. Or fully manual mode.

Looks like a big limitation of the R6. I did online search and looks like R5 has this option. Seems dumb or I'd say rather almost deliberate for Canon not to include it into R6.

Would appreciate your thoughts/workarounds.

Patent: Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM

Yesterday I posted a patent showing the optical formulas for both an RF 15-35mm f/4L and an RF 16-35mm f/4L. I noted that an RF 14-35mm f/4L is rumored to be coming in 2021, and I did wonder aloud if that was a type, but it appears Canon is definitely working on an RF 14-35mm f/4L optical formula.
It looks like this design of an RF 14-35mm f/4L has an internal zoom and will likely have IS as well.

Have we experienced our last Photokina? The show has been suspended until further notice

No 8 / Cologne, Germany, 27 November 2020 // photokina will be suspended until further notice
After 70 years, decreases in the imaging market force a hard cut
In view of the further massive decline in markets for imaging products, Koelnmesse has decided to discontinue organising photokina at its Cologne location for the time being. “Unfortunately, at present the framework conditions in the industry do not provide a viable basis for the leading international trade fair for photography, video and imaging,” according to Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse. “This hard cut after a 70-year shared history was very difficult for us. The trend in this industry, with which we have always had a close and trusting partnership, is very painful for us to witness. But we are facing the situation with a clear, honest decision against continuing this event, a decision to which, unfortunately, we have no alternative.”

Even before the coronavirus pandemic...
