Here are different ways to cool the Canon EOS R5, watercooling and more

DIY Perks on YouTube have posted a 20-minute video showcasing how they developed different cooling methods for the Canon EOS R5.
The first attempt was installing a DIY water cooling solution. What was interesting with this, was firmware v1.0.0 still gave the overheating warning at about the 20-minute mark, proving that part of the original EOS R5 firmware overheating safety measures was the internal timer. However, after updating to firmware v1.1.11, the water-cooled Canon EOS R5 recorded indefinitely.
Since the water cooling is hardly a usable setup, DIY Perks decided to install a custom made copper heatsink for the processor and surrounding areas. The goal here was to push the heat to the rear cover of the camera. With only a copper heatsink installed along with some thermal paste, the Canon EOS R5 was able to...

Patent: Canon RF 15-35mm f/4L

Canon News has uncovered a patent for a lens that will surely be coming in the future from Canon. I have reported that a Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM was on the way. Perhaps the “14mm” was a type and it will in fact be 15mm at the wide end.
This patent also includes an optical formula that has a wide end of 16mm.
I suspect we’re going to see this lens or something very similar announced in 2021.

Patent: Very small Canon RF mount zoom lens designs

Canon News has uncovered a patent that shows Canon is working on very small RF zoom lenses, these simple designs may also be collapsable.
Japan Patent Application 2020-190661
In recent years, so-called mirrorless cameras, which do not have a quick return mirror, are increasing in cameras. Since this mirrorless camera has a thin body, is compact and lightweight, it is required to develop a compact and lightweight interchangeable lens that matches the mirrorless camera.
Since this mirrorless camera does not require the space of the quick return mirror, it is not necessary to secure the back focus as much as the conventional interchangeable lens. Therefore, the configuration of the lens is also different from that of the...

Crazy question about RF TC's

Hi all,

Still converting my kit towards RF lenses and I have a question regarding Teleconverters. I understand how to use (and the issues with) the EF-RF converter with my EF TC 1.4x and an EF "big white" lens. But, as I move from EF to RF over time, I am thinking about RF TC's. Has anyone tried to stack as follows:
- EOS R5 (or any RF camera) with an RF TC followed by an RF to EF adapter then an EF lens?

I think a limitation of the RF TC's is that the glass extends so one cannot use it with all the RF lenses. But, if I someday have almost all RF glass, my EF TC's become useless and I would sell them to get RF TC's. Hope this makes sense. I am certainly no optics wizard and there might be an issue I am not aware of.

Thanks.

R5 IBIS seemingly erratic behaviour when shooting video

Hi everyone,
My R5's IBIS seems to behave in a weird way when shooting video with a Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 zoom attached (this lens has no IS). Even if I'm just "smoothly" panning handheld, the sensor moves around in short, erratic, unexpected bursts. Very annoying and of course renders the footage useless. I have tried different settings (digital IS off/on/enhanced), recording modes (auto/manual exposure) and AF methods, to no avail. Basically, I've had to turn off the IBIS to ensure I get my 4k footage jitter-free. On the (also non-stabilized) EF 70-200 f/2.8 the problem is much less noticeable. Has anyone run into this same odd behaviour? Any fix suggestions?

R6 for stills - 10 weeks of experience

I got my R6 10 weeks ago and I'm pretty happy with it. I feel it is a worthwhile, but not massive, step up from my 5D4.

Among the things I like are:

The very accurate and fast autofocus system. Higher keeper ratio (compared to 5D4) when doing photoshoots with moving models.

The eye/face tracking is fun, but not useful enough to use all the time. I put the focus mode selection on a programmable button so I can switch easily.

The amazing stabilization system - I got nice waterfall pix hand held at 1/8 second.

The excellent detail in the 20 MP RAW files - Every bit as good as the 5D4 which created 30 MP files.

The RF 24-105 F/4 kit lens - noticeably sharper than the EF version - perhaps partly due to better autofocus?

The RF 35mm macro lens - very sharp, but does have some focus noise that might be a problem for video.

The EF-RF adapter works great. My old EF lenses focus better than ever before.

The RAW files have a different look than those from the 5D4. It's hard to describe, but I like it better. Smoother, perhaps, and they edit more easily in Lightroom.

Three control wheels and a joystick make it easy to control your shooting parameters without fumbling.

Battery life for still photography is about the same as my 5D4, roughly 1,200 to 1,400 shots on a battery (estimated).

Things I don't like:

The crazy high cost of most RF lenses. I only have two of the entry level ones and may not buy any more.

Sometimes the autofocus won't lock on in typical indoor room illumination where I think my 5D4 would have locked on. This could be due to the lens I'm using, but haven't tracked down the cause for sure.

When I was doing some long waterfall exposures on a tripod, the horizontal shots were very sharp, but the verticals had a very strange uniform blur, like Gaussian blur. A friend told me I should have turned off the stabilization, something I never had to bother with before. I plan to explore that in the future.

When working with a model for an hour or so, the viewfinder will sort of go crazy for about 5-8 seconds. It flickers to black and displays random confused stuff then goes back to normal. It only does this once in a two hour shoot. It was a little disorienting at first, but now I know it's normal and just wait for the camera to settle down.

When I bring the camera up to my eye, the viewfinder often shows me the last shot I took. This was disorienting for quite a while, now I just half press to make it go away. I think I changed a menu setting so it doesn't happen as often as it did at first.

So that is what comes to mind right now. Anyone else care to share their R6 experience so far?

Take Care,

Dr. Mike

Moon at 2400mm on R5

I have a Kenco 3xTC which was marketed as for manual use but it works in AF on the R5 as well as in liveview on some DSLR bodies. As it was a reasonably clear winter's night and half moon, I paired it with a 2xTCIII on a 400mm DO II on the R5 and took a shot at 2400mm, f/24, 1/125s iso 1600. Vanilla DxOPL4 plus Clearview to enhance contrast. I had to downsize by a factor of 3 to upload! A couple of full-sized crops included. A challenge to the 800 f/11!

R5 wifi and iPhone

Hi!

Does anyone actually get the R5 connected to and having the WiFi work ?

Think I’ve counted 12-14 different error messages on my R5 and iPhone now and I’m seriously about to throw them both out where I can’t see them ever again.

third time now I’ve spent a full battery to flat trying to get it to work like it did so easily on my old R.

before The 1.2.0 update I had managed to create a manual network thatmy iPhone and R5 both recognized and while it took forever to connect t compared to the R, it worked.

now it’s impossible to have it function. I followed the step by step in the user guide and it worked. Turn the camera and phone off anD try to connect again, nothing works. The name of the camera network changes each time so it won’t connect.
I’ve deleted all com.settings many times, deleted connections and Bluetooth and WiFi many times and started over. Nothing makes it connect through the app or at all. I’ve manually selected the WiFi network from the phone menu , doesn’t work.
How can I have it connect to the same network each time? If I can create a network and use the same every time it might work.

I’m seriously loosing my mind over how much they screwed this up compared to how it worked with the R. I didn’t even have the Bluetooth enabled with the R and it was great.

any tips would be greatly appreciated.

The next major firmware updates for the EOS R5 and EOS R6 will come in Q1 of 2021 [CR2]

The recent firmware updates for the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 left a few shooters wanting. Even if the updates did add some good new features, they weren’t quite the features people had been hoping for.
I have been told that the next major firmware update for the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 will come sometime during Q1 of 2021.
Coming Canon EOS R5 features:

Canon Cinema RAW light addition
C-Log 3
1080p @ 120fps

More to come…

Used 1DX III value (60,000 shots)?

I have had my 1DX III since early March and have loved every minute with it. I had originally planned on it being a 4-5 year+ body but find I don't get out often enough to warrant it as just a hobbyist.

I have somewhere around 60,000 shots on it and it's somehow still in pristine physical condition.

Selling a used body this early and worth this much is not something I have any experience in and I have not found any other used sales for this camera to use as a baseline. I'd like to see what I can get for it and possibly move into an R6 until the rumored R1 is out.

Has anyone seen them for sale used or could ballpark it?

Thanks!

Kickstarter: Gura Gear Chobe 2.0

Gura Gear has had an interesting history. From the launch of their first bag, the Bataflae backpack, they were known for their high-end and highly functional bags. The brand then moved to the Kiboko line of backpacks, which came in multiple sizes, and also launched one of the forgotten and highly underrated bags, the Chobe v1.0. The Chobe v1.0 has travelled the planet with me and is my favourite shoulder bag ever.
Unfortunately, after Gura Gear purchased Tamrac, they made a massive mistake in killing off the “Gura Gear” brand and moved the bags under the Tamrac brand. That didn’t go well and most people forgot about Gura Gear bags.
The Gura Gear brand came back last year when they launched the Kiboko v2.0 lineup of backpacks. They came back with the same quality and functionality as we became accustomed to from Gura Gear.
Gura  Gear has now launched the Chobe v.2.0 via Kickstarter. A new multipurpose shoulder bag. I use this bag every...

What Is The Current Wisdom for IBIS/IS On or Off?

Yes, this is a question that has been coming up for years. Now, in 2020, Canon has given us two full-frame IBIS models that work with IS and non IS lenses.

I need to do some controlled tests with subjects moving at moderate speeds, but, on the R6, I'm seeing modest but surprising motion blur in images up to 1/1250th of a second. Some where they are walking, some where they are jogging, and some where they are standing still.

I don't think this discussion must be limited to R5/R6 users. What is your IS/IBIS strategy for handheld shots? Do you turn it off above a certain shutter speed? For all subjects? Moving? Still?

What if your subjects are going past you, but your lens doesn't have a Mode 2, or panning IS?
