eos R5 shutter sound compared to eos R

hey guys and girls. been using my eos r5 for a few days now and I must tell you I like pretty much everything about it with just one hiccup: I hate the faint shutter sound. I used a 5d IV and went to an eos R last year and I thought the eos R shutter sound is appalling compared to the 5d IV but now I see that the eos R shutter sound is way nicer and tighter that the one of the eos r5. I couldn't find anyone else complaining about this, starting to wonder if my unit is defective.
What do you think of it?

There are reports of the RF 85mm f/2 IS STM landing next week

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM was announced alongside the EOS R5 and EOS R6 back in July and had a shipping estimate of October. It looks like it’s on schedule, as I’ve received two reports of the lens hitting the shores of Australia this week and it will likely be in customers’ hands next week.
Adorama is still showing a ship date of November 2, 2020, but I think folks that preordered what will definitely be a popular lens will be getting there’s before then.
If you preordered one and you’ve received a shipping notification, please let me know.

The Funleader 18mm f/8 Cap Lens is now available for the RF mount

The Funleader 18mm f/8 cap lens was first launched on Kickstarter back in 2019, and it was quite successful raising about $35,000 USD.
The lens itself is an 18mm full-frame tiny pancake lens with a fixed aperture of f/8 that doesn’t require autofocus. It has a depth of field from about 2.6feet to infinity, so you can just point and shoot and everything should be in focus.
I ordered one of these to try out. I don’t expect L lens quality, but I do like to switch up the look of my shots at the lens instead of in post.
You can now purchase the Funleader 18mm f/8 cap lens on ebay for the RF mount, as well as Sony’s E-Mount and Nikon’s Z-Mount. It’s relatively affordable for what it is at about $149 USD...

Operating conditions of SIGMA’s lenses for Canon EF mount with the Canon EOS R5

From SIGMA:
We would like to share the results of our investigation regarding the operation of SIGMA’s lenses for Canon EF mount when used on the Canon EOS R5.
We have verified the operation with our SIGMA GLOBAL VISION (SGV) interchangeable lenses (Contemporary, Art, and Sports lines) for Canon EF mounts used on the“Canon EOS R5” with Canon’s mount adapter “EF-EOS R Series”, and confirmed that there were no problems with general operations such as AE, AF, and image stabilization.

Please note the following points when using our products.

For SGV interchangeable lenses released before 2017*, it is necessary that the lens firmware is updated to Ver.2.00 or later. * The release year can be confirmed by the edition number (A017, C015, etc.) engraved on the lens barrel. Please refer to the following page for details of the lens firmware...

Rumors confirmed: Canon EOS M50 Mark II and a new Speedlite are coming soon

The Canon EOS M50 Mark II has been confirmed through Canon product listings for dealers. This camera body has been rumored for quite some time to come in Q4 of 2020, so we should see an announcement soon.
Also appearing is a new Canon Speedlite called the EL-1, we have reported a new flagship Speedlite was coming, and hopefully, this is it. It’s interesting that Canon is now using a new naming scheme for a Speedlite.
Also added to the list are Speedlite accessories named SCF-EL, SBA-EL and LP-EL. I think the LP is going to be a rechargeable battery for the new Speedlite.
More to come…

Rumors are slow, let’s talk RF lens wish lists

With the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 already shipping in batches, and the Canon Cinema EOS C70 starting to ship in November, the rumor mill has slowed down for the moment. This tells me not to expect too many new and exciting products to hit in 2020.
I do want to talk about RF lenses though, and I wonder what your expectations are to fill out the RF lens lineup, there are obviously still a lot of holes in it. Keep in mind the RF mount has only existed for 755 days (at the time of this post) and the last 6 months we’ve been buried in a global pandemic that has altered product plans.
Rumours aside, these are the 3 lenses I want to see next from Canon.

Canon EOS R5 impressions by a Canon EOS 5Ds shooter

Keith Cooper from Northlight Images gives his impressions of the Canon EOS R5. Keith shoots a ton of architectural photography and uses tilt-shifts for a lot of his work.
Keith gives many positives about the Canon EOS R5, but his conclusion may surprise you.
I really like the clear viewfinder and image stabilisation of the R5. The image quality is a step up from the 5Ds – not massive, but it’s there.
The handling is good, and autofocus seems to meet any needs I’d have. Exposure seems accurate and unphased by shift, tilt, or any old optics I might attach. Those RF lenses were rather nice.
The rear screen is clear with lots of detail. The top screen is readable without my glasses.
Control layout is familiar to me – no problems once I’m used to it.
You can watch the video above or checkout the written review over at Northlight Images...

Forum suggestion: Don’t have likes/dislikes/etc in recent activity

The way I use the forum is I go straight to the recent activity page, the trouble is since the like/dislike/etc buttons have been added that recent activity page is swamped by likes. Sometimes it takes scrolling two or three pages just to see a couple of actual comments. This makes it much more difficult to be involved in threads where there are actual conversations going on and minimizes my engagement.

Is there a way to see only actual comments? Inot I for one would be more engaged if there was.

R5 Servo Autofocus Eye tracking question.

In the AF Menu 5 --> Initial Servo AF pt for Face Tracking

There are three options:
1) Initial AF pt set for face Tracking
2) AF pt set for spot af, single-point AF or Expanded AF
3) Auto
"You can set the initial AF point for Servo AF when the AF method is set to [Face + Tracking]
o Initial AF pt set for Face [+]: Servo AF Starts from the AF point set as the initial point for Face + Tracking
o AF pt set for Fine Point, single-point, Expanded AF: Servo AF Continues from the AF point set for spot AF, Single-point AF or Expanded AF when switching to face + Tracking."

So what is the real difference between the first two selections? I'm starting in AF Servo mode, it doesn't seem to matter. If I'm starting in AF One Shot, Lock focus, and then switch to Servo, it doesn't seem to matter.

What am I miss-understanding?

Thanks in advance.

Anybody else using primarily electronic shutter on the R5?

Once I realized how incredibly much better the electronic shutter on the R5 is compared to the R, I decided to primarily use the fully electronic shutter, because why add the wear on the shutter in most conditions?

So far I'm pretty happy. In a lot of situations, at least anything not involving fast motion or questionable artificial lighting, I don't think there's an appreciable difference between the two.

There was a Tony and Chelsea video stating that using the electronic shutter increases noise, but is that a real concern? Why would the electronic shutter add noise? Different processing technique for the data coming from the sensor?

Venus Laowa Zero-D Cine lenses for RF

Venus Laowa is is making their Zero-D Cine lenses available for RF mount..

Eye AF struggles in bright sunlight

I did a photoshoot early Saturday morning and realized that eye autofocus has problems when people's eyes are not fully open. The light in Vegas is typically one of two types, too much and not enough. Early morning and late afternoon is the worst as the sun is on the horizon and often in the model's eyes, which causes squinting. If my R5 can't see enough of the eye, it refuses to lock on. It's not a major deal but I found it interesting that the camera couldn't see an eye if the model didn't have her eyelids mostly open. Logically, that's to be expected but it's something that I need to keep in mind when taking quick shots and don't have time to study the viewfinder before pressing the shutter button.

Venus Optics unveils three new Ultra Wide cinema lenses for Canon RF mount cameras

Anhui China, Sept 28, 2020 – Venus Optics, the camera lenses manufacturer specialized in making unique camera lenses, added the Canon RF mount option to 3 of their new ultra-wide cinema lenses. They are the Laowa 9mm T2.9 Zero- D , Laowa 15mm T2.1 Zero-D Cine Lens and Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D. All three lenses feature the same optical system as the rest of the mounts and with the same close-to-zero distortion (Zero-D) design. They are also built with robust cinema lenses housing. The new RF variants will be a very interesting wide-angle option for Red Komodo, Canon EOS R5 / R6, and the new Canon C70 cinema cameras.

Ultra-wide FoV & fast aperture
All three Laowa cine lenses feature an ultra-wide angle of view and fast aperture. The 9mm T2.9 features an approximate 113° FoV on Super35 sensors while the 15mm T2.1 and 12mm T2.9 feature a 110° and 122° FoV respectively on cameras with full-frame...

24-240 Lens

I use the stacked coupons to order a refurbished 24-240 lens last week. It came yesterday. I have seldom purchased consumer lenses but the RF ones have been getting such good reviews that I bought a 35mm f/1.8 and really liked it. So, now I'm also impressed by what you get for your money with the 24-240. Its a refurbished lens, but there is not a mark on it, it looks like new and works great.

I was able to take it out this morning and shoot 20 or 30 images of my dying garden, the IS worked very well and images had lots of detail and nice color. At 240mm it seemed to be a tiny amount less sharp. At 24mm, I did not have a problem with the distortion due to the nature of the photos. I did not turn on the correction in Lightroom.

Here are some random samples. They are usually cropped and have the color saturation cranked up because I like it that way for vegetation.

I had only one image that was not focused perfectly. It was my fault, focus was fine, just not on the subject. That is unusual for me, I'd expect 3 or 4 normally.

Dream Lens List

Well, the pandemic really derailed things for me. I had the RF 28-70 f/2, 50 f/1.2, 85 f/1.2. I even had the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS at one time. I was partway towards my goal and had a huge setback. I now own zero RF lenses. My dream list remains the same:
RF 14-28mm f/2L
RF 28-70mm f/2L
RF 70-135mm f/2L
RF 24mm f/1.2L
RF 35mm f/1.2L
RF 50mm f/1.2L
RF 85mm f/1.2L
RF 135mm f/1.8L

Anyway, that's some mighty high hopes. What is your dream kit from Canon?

How Fast is the R5 downloading Raw Images at 5 GHZ?

Has anyone used the faster Wi-Fi on the R5 to download images to a PC? I'm wondering how fast it is compared to my R. I accidentally had my Camera set to RAW+ large jpeg when trying out my new 24-240 lens this morning. Its taking forever to download them over wi-fi. I have it set to automatically download but I only intended to use it for a few jpeg images.
