R5 Firmware 1.1.0 problem

Hi all,

Today I updated my R5 with firmware 1.1.0 but have run into a problem. Images taken with my RF 85mm f1.2 are no longer sharp. It almost appears as if the image stabilisation is no longer working properly. Shutter speeds are 1/125 and 1/160 and at the point of focus it just isn't as sharp as it was with firmware version 1.0.0. Very strange!

Has anyone else run into this problem? I'm going to try a fresh re-install of the firmware and see if that helps... otherwise I will be contacting Canon to let them know something isn't right.

Thanks!
Chris

R5 recommended gear questions

So ... put the down payment for an R5 order.. purchased an RF 24-70 2.8 IS... while I wait, have questions on recommended gear from those who have one.

- EF adaptor.. native canon or one of the 'breakthrought' ones? thoughts? anyone have some?
- Is there a preferred CFExpress card? and paired SD card?
- Battery grip... thoughts? I have 3 Canon LP-E6N batteries and it will come with a LP-E6NH.. can battery grips use a mix?
- anything else I should consider buying when it arrives?

Weird color banding in my R6 photos (both JPEG and RAW)?

I tried to take some out-of-focus photos yesterday with my new R6 and RF 24-105 mm f/4. When I uploaded the RAWs to my computer via Capture One, I noticed that the darker areas in the corner looked strange. It appears to be some color banding. I tried both Capture One, Lightroom and Photoshop, as well as looked at the JPEG directly, but all of them looks like this.

Do you have any idea what it could be?

R5 battery life?

Can we get some posts from R5 owners about what their real world battery life is like with the older LP-E6N and the newer LP-E6NH batteries? I've been hearing battery life reports that are all over the place.

Ken Rockwell reported excellent battery life at 10,000 shots with a 3rd party LP-E6N Watson battery (seems unbelievable).
TechRadar reported excellent battery life at 2300+ shots with a LP-E6NH and EVF (unclear if 60 hz or 120 hz).
Random B&H review reported excellent battery life at 1800 shots with a LP-E6NH.
Random B&H review reported average battery life at 800 shots with a LP-E6NH.
Random Amazon review reported average battery life at 650 shots with a LP-E6NH, 120hz enabled, moderate chimping/menu usage.
PetaPixel reported poor battery life at 400 shots with a LP-E6NH and with GPS, WiFi, Dual Pixel, and AF Tracking turned off.

Why the wide variation in battery life? Does firmware v. 1.1 improve battery life at all?

Battery life is the biggest issue that's keeping me on the fence so far. Primarily interested in R5 for 90% photography, 10% video, average chimping.

Thanks!

Rumored Canon EOS M7 camera specifications, and the end of the line for EOS M? [CR1]

More specifications for the Canon EOS M7, rumored to be announced this year are making the rounds on the web. I cannot confirm these specifications, but I figured I’d post them anyway.
The rumored price tag here doesn’t fit as a follow-up to the EOS M50.
Canon EOS M7 Specifications:

32mp APS-C sensor with DPAF II
IBIS
Slightly renewed DIGIC LSI
Cheap EVF, 2.36Mdots
Dual SD Cards, speed limits are the same as 4 years old cameras
12fps serial shooting, without AF active
4K from 24p to 60p, using all APS-C sensor sampling
1080p up to 120p (overheating at 120fps)
CLog mode for marketing purposes
$1599 price

The second part of this rumor suggests that Canon will be killing the EOS M line as early as some time in 2021. That means no more cameras or lenses for the system and it will be left to the history books in favor of the EOS R system.
I have heard this a couple of times over the last few months, but all of that information has come to be anonymously and I haven’t put much...

EOS R5 face / eye tracking

I left Canon years ago.... went to Fuji for mirrorless and back to Canon now with this R5.
I had a question about the face and eye tracking. In both photo and video modes: If you lose an object you are tracking or the camera does not lock on to something to track it seems that I have to hit the Set button to get it back in the mode to search for a face, eye or animal to track. Do i have a setting wrong or is this accurate? Thanks for any help. Love the camera. I have never used a tracking feature before. I have always shot everything in manual.

Review: Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-300

Keith over at Northlight has completed an exhaustive written review of the upcoming Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-300 printer. This review should tell you everything you need to know about the new printer from Canon.
From Northlight Images:
Compared to the previous PRO-10 and PRO-10S, the PRO-300 is slightly smaller and distinctly lighter.
It weighs just over 14kg (~31 lbs) a noticeable reduction from the ~20kg of the PRO-10S.
At 639 x 379 x 200 mm it’s also slightly smaller than the older PRO-10/10S (689 x 385 x 215 mm)
The screen is a welcome addition, especially for those of us who might not have the printer situated right next to their computer. It would have been nice to be touch sensitive…
The wireless options are useful, but unfortunately not being able to use the wired interface at the same time is irksome. This means that I can’t for example use the speed and reliability of my ethernet and have wireless available for occasional...

RP’s autofocus unresponsive in video

So I was out yesterday shooting a little video, and for the life of me, I couldn’t get the autofocus to work in video. At first, it didn’t want to recognize faces/eyes when in EyeAF, and when it finally did, I could see the box around the eye, but the focus motors wouldn’t even try to get it in focus. Even out of EyeAF, tapping on different sections of the screen didn’t make the lens refocus. In photo mode, everything worked great and AF was fast and responsive. Am I missing something, or has anyone experienced this issue?

It was the first time I used my camera since the latest firmware update, so I’m wondering if that is to blame. I’ve only tested with the RF 24-105 f/4, cause I couldn’t just start doing some testing while in the middle of a shoot and as we’re losing light; I had to shoot everything in MF, hopefully it’ll look decent

Laowa introduce ultra-wide angle 9mm/f5.6 for mirrorless FF

There is also a 11mm/f4.5

Not available for Canon.

Canon R5 owners... how has your experience with IBIS been? Works great with all my lenses except one

The IBIS is a thing of beauty in this camera. It works flawlessly with both my Canon EF 85mm 1.4 IS, and my Sigma 50mm 1.4 art lens. However when I attach my Sigma 24-35mm f2, the IBIS is really jittery and unusable. This is both in photo and video mode.
Anyone had a similar experience or could shed light on why this is happening?

Sandisk 64GB CFexpress does not support RAW video on EOS-1D X Mark III?

On Canon's website for the EOS-1D X Mark III, there is a footnote for the main product photo that says:
"The Sandisk 64GB CFexpress card does not support RAW video recording"

Is this a limitation of the camera or the card?
I haven't found a similar note in the Video White Paper.
5.5K RAW 5472x2886 @ 59.94 would have a data rate of 2600 Mbps per video white paper.
And the card specs indicate " up to 800MB/s write speed ".

Is it just me, or are all of the Canon supplied LUTs kind of junk when used with R5 log footage?

I've gotten into shooting log footage recently. So I downloaded Canon's LUTs, expecting that I could load them onto the footage and get more-or-less normal looking footage, but with more latitude to adjust the highlights and shadows. But no matter which LUT I try, the footage just looks very off compared to footage taken without log turned on. Am I missing something? The colors are washed out, the contrast is still very low. What gives? Am I not understanding how log footage is supposed to work, or are Canon's LUTs just not that good?

For what it's worth, I had the same experience with log footage on the R as well. I feel like I'm either not understanding or not using LUTs properly.

Select Canon cameras can now auto-backup to Google Photos

Google has added support to the image.canon app to allow automatic backup to Google Photos. If you’re not comfortable with backing up to Canon’s cloud solution, this is probably a great feature for you.
From Google:
With the latest version of the image.canon app (available on Android or iOS) and a compatible Canon camera, you can choose to automatically transfer original quality photos to Google Photos, eliminating the hassle of using your computer or phone to back them up.
In addition to a compatible Canon camera and the image.canon app, you’ll also need a

Patent: Lots of fast RF prime lens optical formulas

Keith over at Northlight Images has uncovered a patent at the USPTO that shows Canon working on a lot of fast RF prime lenses.
The optical formulas in this patent include:

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8
Canon RF 80mm f/1.4
Canon RF 85mm f/1.4
Canon RF 85mm f/1.8
Canon RF 100mm f/2
Canon RF 135mm f/2
Canon RF 300mm f/2.8

These obviously won’t all become consumer products, but I think it shows Canon is working on longer fast primes for the RF mount.

Canon confirms addition of Canon Log 3, Cinema RAW Light, lower bit rates and more for the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5

While Canon has just released new firmware for both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, it appears they’re already hard at work on the next updates for each camera.
Canon has gone ahead and confirmed our previous reports about features updates for the Canon EOS R5, and additionally the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III.
From Canon:
In addition to the EOS R5 firmware version 1.1.0, Canon is already working on further future updates in response to feedback on the EOS-1D X Mark III and...

A new EOS M camera appears for certification, with a twist

Nokishita has uncovered certification information for a new Canon EOS M camera. This camera has the code name DS126843, which is unusual for an EOS M camera.
Canon News notes than the “DS” model number isn’t normal for the EOS M cameras, as they have historically started with “PC”. This could mean nothing, or perhaps it means there has been some internal shakeup in Canon and that the Powershot group is no longer developing EOS M cameras.
This camera looks to retain the small size of the EOS M lineup as it uses the LP-E12 battery and not the larger LP-E6 family of batteries.
We have previously reported that two new EOS M cameras were coming later in 2020, and this should confirm at least one is coming quite soon...
