One my my European rumour mongers is at it again by espousing that Apple may be getting into Large sensor mobiles and professional/industrial use smartphone by putting in a low pixel count infrared nightvision sensor (like the CAT S60 rugged phones) along with a 26.1 megapixel 6K resolution stills/video sensor with HDR 10 bit 4:2:2 video at 60 fps at 6144 by 4256 total pixels for stills and video (3:2 aspect ratio). It was espoused to me that the new phone is to be simply called the iPhone Pro IR with no numeric monikers and ONLY a large iPhone XL sized screen will be made available.

These are the noted specs above and what is interesting is that design-wise, the 1/2 inch 26.1 megapixel sensor AND the low-pixel count IR sensor is being included on the back in a horizontal black stripe on the upper part of the phone similar to what was used on the old iPods. The thickness will be only 9.5mm thick which means they have SOLVED the focal plane distance issues for 1/2 inch sensors. And since the resolution is espoused to be a 6144x4256 for the sensor, this means it is highly likely it IS similar to the TransX series of sensor developed for Fuji that are made by Sony but made smaller onto 1/2 inch sensor dies. I suspect it is modded by Apple for HDR 10-bit 4:4:4 stills and 4:2:2 10 bit video which means the light gathering power will be outstanding!

It seems Apple will restrain themselves on the megapixel count to focus on HDR and low-light gathering ability for stills and video!

The IR sensor will be used for BOTH 3D depth imaging AND thermal (IR) video/stills nightvision services. This means the covering glass, lenses, flash and solid LED light would need to be IR friendly which means more than one type of LED light and cover glass (likely Quartz or Sapphire!) will present on the phone. Extra software is being developed and it seems there might already be an API (Application Programming Interface) within the latest Apple SDK's (Software Development Kits) for Nightvision/Thermal imagery capture and manipulation, which further supports the inclusion of a larger Infrared sensor on an upcoming iPhone.

I have no introduction date or other details as of yet!

I was wondering if anyone was able to find a way to set the EOS R so that when you half-press the shutter button, if you are in focus magnifier, it will exit so that you can see the full screen again.

Half-pressing on most of the Fuji or Sony mirrorless cameras exits the magnifier screen but can't figure it out on Canon.

For the interim, I'm using the right M-fn bar and the record button for focus magnifier.

Hello. I have bought the lens about six months ago (spring 2019) . And from box I noticed that focus ring have some play and some rattle sound inside. I'm not shake the lens hard.
At summer i have sent the lens to CPS center to test it. Answer - ok, lens condition is in specification.
But, presently i think that rattle sound got louder.
I've create the video:

Sound goes from back lens group. This is my first L lens, i don't know how it should be.
I live in small town without any service centers to check the lens.
Is it normal or not?

We all know that many new Canon lenses, L lenses too, can have a plastic-made filter thread.
But even aluminium threads are quite fragile.
So, in order to protect them, I usually buy the cheapest filters available, remove (destroy) the glass element, and screw them on my lenses. Out of experience, I can say this saved my 24 TSE II from a major damage, when I stupidly dropped it on concrete...(had to send it for repair nevertheless ). Of course, I do use lens-shades, but some are to voluminous to keep mounted on the lens in the bag (24 TSE !)

When Canon did their development announcement for the EOS-1D X Mark III last month, one of the rumoured features that wasn’t mentioned in the press release was the inclusion of in-body stabilization. Most have assumed if it wasn’t mentioned in the development press release, that the camera isn’t equipped with it.
A new source who claims to have shot with the EOS-1D X Mark III claims that Canon’s new flagship DSLR does indeed have in-body stabilization and that all future Canon ILC cameras will have the feature as well.
A lot was left out the development announcement about the camera, so I think there’s still a small chance that we see in-body stabilization in the EOS-1D X Mark III, but unfortunately, we cannot confirm this information to certainty.

Thank you, Lukas Haupt, for pointing out in another thread (https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-to-release-new-firmware-for-the-eos-r-later-this-month/) the problem of the R not using the 600ex (or 580ex) AF Assist Beam.

You are correct. After doing some digging, including the user manual, I now see that this is an issue with IR beams, which is what the 600ex and the 580ex use. Darn!

And the little LED on the camera can be nearly useless. Even with the Rf 24-105mm f/4, if within seven or so feet of the subject, the lens barrel blocks the AF assist beam in a big area of the frame, such as in the center. With the lens hood on, things are much worse!

Seems like a hotshoe LED assist would work--but then no flash!!!

At least the series of strobe bursts still works. I have that disabled on my 5DIV, as it is unnecessary and distracting, but, on the R, it has to be used.

Sigh...Always something with tech.

Any interesting work arounds? Apparently this is a problem with mirrorless, not some EOS R bug.

Does anybody feel like this is a "gotcha" that wasn't mentioned in reviews and hype? Even the user manual kind of avoids the topic directly except on page 295, "An LED AF-assist beam is fired by LED-equipped external flash units."

The 600ex is apparently IR, even though we can see the red grid!

I’m rationalising my modern kit to Voigt 20, Canon 24 IS & 50, and what?

I’m selling the great but heavy 70-300L, should I look for one of the newer plastic fantastic zooms, or maybe a 100 or 135 prime for a bit of speed.

I have 6D & 100D bodies giving me 20/24/50/??? on full frame and crop equivalent of 32/38/80/??? on the dinky little 100D

I noticed that I keep getting these strange horizontal lines across the highlight areas of my images.

Has anyone else experienced this with their R cameras? I'm wondering if it's a sensor issue, or if it's a normal phenomenon.


Granted, this is an 8x crop that I'm showing to illustrate the issue. However, my 1DX2 and 5DsR do not produce lines like this at any crop.

I still have a week to return the camera to the Store for a replacement, so I want to make sure everything is operating as it should.

Hey all. New around here but I’m glad to be a new member to this community.

So my issue is this. I was doing a shoot with my alienbees 800. I went to take the image and the screen was pitch black. I couldn’t see a thing. I managed to get a few photos but I had no idea what my composition was or what it looked liked.

Now having used my DSLR (canon 70D and canon 5d Mark II) in the past with this same setup I have never this issue. Obviously it’s because one is a mechanical shutter and the EOS r is a digital mirror less camera with no shutter.

So my question is, how do I get the EOS r to actually let me take photos in this setup?

my settings were set to:

f4.5-5. ISO 100, and 1/200.

I hope I did a good job of explaining that. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

4k crop is down to 1.24x with an extra stop of light, control ring function retained as well.
This looks more like an improved 1DC now (including the rolling shutter and effectively loosing 60p, since it only works in the FF mode)
It has C-Log, but also with the option of external 10-bit 4:2:2 and the DPAF retained as well.

This will keep the EOS R going for a bit longer in terms of video capabilities.

I am excited to report that I have received my RF 70-200 f2.8 L IS today.

I love the size and weight of it. The EOS R and the RF 70-200 is shorter than the 5DIV with the 200 f2.8 LII attached. It balances nicely even without the battery grip.

The IS seems to be outstanding. The build appears to be top notch.

The AF is very fast, and it is very quiet.

With regards to image quality, I haven't been able to take any serious test pictures yet, but I did some hand held indoor test shots for checking the far corner performance, and it seems to do great at f 2.8 at all focal lengths.

For those of you who have read the pre review made by the digital picture, you may have noticed that Bryan complains about missing steel bearings for the tripod ring. I for one appreciate Canons decision on the construction of the tripod ring; the lens is designed with the priority of not using it. By that I mean that the lens has no physical elements (steel bearings) sticking out when the mount is of, making the lens look and feel much nicer when the tripod ring is detached. Those of you who use a 70-200 on a tripod will definitely agree with Bryan though...

After playing with I have little doubt that this lens is a slam dunk for Canon.

We have been told that a minor firmware update will be released for the Canon EOS R later this month.
Apparently the firmware update will correct some wireless flash compatibility issues.
Do not expect any new features, this will definitely be a minor firmware release.
*Update* It looks like the update has moved to sometime in December 2019.

Hmm... no mention about resolution. IMO, it stays at 20-22. MP. They improved eyverything around the resolution of the sensor. They would have written it, if the resolution goes up - or more up than in the last years

We have been told that SIGMA is actively working on an RF mount lens roadmap and will announce their plans sometime in early 2020, I would suspect an announcement ahead of CP+ in February would be the ideal time to do so.
Apparently distributors have received some early information about SIGMA’s plans, but our source on this one didn’t want to divulge any more information.
It would be great for the EOS R system if SIGMA gets on board early with compelling lenses.

Friends. I want to buy the R. If any of you come to know where it is being sold for a good price, will you be kind enough at post here? PLS. THX.

I purchased a used lens and the dial just in front of the aperture control (where it has the triangle to mark what aperture number is set) spins freely. The aperture control works and clicks in place fine, but obviously since the indicator dial spins freely, it's difficult to know exactly what aperture number you're on. Is this normal, or is there a way to fix it in place? I can return it to the seller still, but if it's an easy fix, I'll do it myself

2020 is shaping up as a big year for new product announcements from Canon, especially on the prosumer and professional fronts. The EOS M lineup will likely see at least one new model as well, as the EOS M50 will likely need a successor.
This rumor is being floated by a site that doesn’t source any sites they take information from, so I’ll return that favour.

What do you guys think?

Anyone head if Canon will offer their Photo Printer Deal for 2019?

My 7d2 just doesn't cut it for aurora photography. I love it. But i have to consider upgrading to a FF for this particular purpose(and obviously it would get used for general landscapes etc). I am wondering what the actual difference is in high iso performance(1600-3200) btween an rp and the 7d2. 2 stops? More? Does anyone have experience with both?

There was a huge discount in canon products in october and i couldn't resist . I added an eos r besides my 5d mark iv and 1d mark ii.
The main reason was to use it for video instead of the 5d mark iv and slowly enter the mirrorless world.
For video is a clear step up from the 5d mark iv .
The flip up screen , the evf , the digital is , the 4k ipb and the button customization are really usefull.
Especially the last one is such a help during shooting.
For photography the transition isn't as smooth because you have to reprogram your brain but i can see the advantages of mirrorless already.
The main frustration for me is mainly that i cannot customize the entire camera for video & photo separately.
So for example for video i want manually to go from evf to flip up screen but in photography i want it to be automatic.
Also although you can set the buttons customized separately for video & photo you can't do that for the dials & the touch bar.
Is that correct and i must find a workaround or am i missing something?
Finally do you know where we can apply suggestions for next firmware updates??
