Nikon Z50 APS-C announced

Z-mount, 20.9 Mpx, tilting screen, 11 fps, 30p 4K movie at £849 announced this morning. It’s going to have a tough time against the M6 II.

Dual micro SD to SD card adaptor for redundancy. Anyone have industry contacts for this one?

I posted this deep in another thread but thought it made some sense to add as a new one....

Micro SD cards are harder to handle but you can get UHS II and 512GB versions so technically no performance hurdle. Would you buy a dual card adaptor for your single slot camera if redundancy is important but not critical to warrant 2 R bodies?

The Sony Pro Duo memory stick was/is so expensive that there are adaptors for 2 x micro SD cards in one pro duo card. These are quite old now and only used as sequential/additional memory ie not mirrored/redundant
Pro duo dimensions are slightly physically smaller than a SD card so in theory a SD adaptor could hold 2 x Micro SD cards giving us the infamous dual SD card redundancy. SD card 32x24x2.1mm vs Pro duo 31x20x1.6mm vs Micro SD 15x11x1mm

There are a couple of threads discussing the option below. Summary is:
- Possible to do technically.
- Additional points of failure but would solve the failed card scenario.
- Could increase the latency.
- Could be much more complex/power etc if a RAID server/buffer is the solution vs a FIFO solution.
Nothing on the market at this time but I imagine that there would be some pent up market demand for such a product and probably more than a pro duo card market

In the bad old film days with underwater photography, if you wanted >36 shots you needed 2 bodies + housings (strobes) for additional storage or redundancy against flooding!

EDIT. I really like OLY OMD cameras as well as my Canon gear.

because if you start playing around with them, you will end up with a couple of them, some pro and premium lenses, and start to get rid of your much larger DLSR hardware.

I now own the OMD-EM1 MK1 with grip, OMD-EM5 MKII with grip, and the OMD-EM1 MKII
as well as a couple pro line lenses and the 25mm F1.8 premium lens.

Bought the older EM1 MK1 and EM5-MKII with grips dirt cheap at a local cam store, and then after a few weeks of using them, I decided to purchase the EM1 MKII as well.

I have come to the conclusion that for every day shooting, I will be an Oly user, but will keep my EOS R for astro use.

traded in my 80D, 1D MKIV and my 7D and will keep the Eos R

IF you love your big Canon's and Nikon's and large lenses, you might not after giving m4/3rds an honest try out.

Repair of 1DS Mk III

I have a 1DS Mk III in need of repair. The camera has given me good service. I've used it since December 2007 or January 2008 when I purchased it new. Canon now no longer repairs the 1DS. I've sent it to several places, who sent it back saying they don't have/can't get parts. Can any of you recommend a repair place with the experience and a good reputation that might service this camera? I did recently find one place online, Camera and Camcorder Repair in Glendale, CA who assure me they have the parts, specifically including the main board in stock. Have any of you had any experience with Camera & Camcorder Repair? Any help any of you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Regards to you all.

Macro Lighting/Flash on Kickstarter? Opinions? Alternatives?

Hi all,

I found this interesting Kickstarter Campaign:

Adaptalux Flash Arms

It appears to be an addition to something they introduced a couple years or so ago o KS.

This latest is for a flexible flash attachment that is controlled with an IR module, that can be on camera or off camera and used best for macro photography.

They also have other constant light offerings with different colored LED lights, a red laser and what really caught my eye...UV lighting for macro.

Is anyone else familiar with this? If so, what are you opinions and do you have any other macro lighting you'd recommend?

This looks pretty handy and appears somewhat well made.....I'm looking to experiment with macro in the coming months, and looking into some of the specialized lighting needs for it.

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III rumoured specifications [CR1]

We have received our first rumoured specifications for the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. Please keep in mind a specification list with a [CR1] rating is coming from an unknown source.
Canon EOS-1D X Mark III specifications (rumoured):

28.1mp full-frame CMOS
Up to 30fps still shooting
Dual DIGIC 9 (This would be the first time the 1D series would introduce a new processor)
IBIS
New and larger rear LCD, the source said it looked brighter too.
February announcement

The source has no knowledge of the video features for the camera. The camera specifications above are for a prototype, and there’s always a possibility that more than one set of specifications are in these prototypes, but if the February announcement timeframe is legit, we should be getting better information soon.

SPAM

Just a reminder. We have a team of 4 active moderators who review each and every new member before they can join the forum. We are currently rejecting many where our tools report a history of spam related to the email and IP of the person involved. We also check black lists, and many spammers actually use a email address advertising them as a spammer. That doesn't work here.

Still, a few get thru, and members should report suspected spammers and we will investigate as soon as we can. Experience has shown us where most of the spam comes from, so we may give certain geographical areas more scrutiny, but don't block members just because of their location. If a new member tries to join from a IP address with multiple spam reports, they will be rejected. That may be unfortunate, they can appeal, and some do get approved thru that process.

Terra

This is a huge crop, but made my "shot of the day". Given the theme, I don't have a problem with the left side looking very bright. Checking the limits of my setup. The step up in megapixels from my 5D Mark III is very appreciated, so much so, that I will be looking hard at the high res R that replaces the 5DSr in the lineup Canon has. Also, Canon really did us a solid on the 85mm. It is the first 85mm prime I have owned, and I really do like it for portraits. My editing around her hair at the top of her head is really bad.

Advice required on downsizing gear

Hi All,

I am currently considering downsizing my existing camera gear and would like some advice and suggestions from other members.

Currently I have the following equipment:
6D Mark II
16-35 f4L
24-105 f4L
70-300 F4.5-5.6L

I mainly use my camera for holiday pics - probably 80 % of use, family shots including 2 yo grand daughter- 10% and night city scapes - 10%.

I originally had a 550D and was disappointed with the image quality when bumping the ISO up and upgraded to the original 6D which I was very happy with the image quality, but a bit bummed by the small number of focus points. I upgraded to the 6D Mark II as soon as it was released and have been very happy with it.

The only issue I have with the gear is the size and weight of the gear when dragging it all around on holidays.

I am currently considering downsizing and selling all of my DSLR gear (including lenses) and buying the M6 Mark II with the 11-22 and 18-150 EF-M lenses and possibly the 35 1.4 as well. I would also be getting the removable EVF.

I think from what I have read that the new crop sensor would provide close enough performance to the 6D M2 (I can accept 1stop worse ISO for equivalent image quality) and I know that the lenses won’t be as good as the L series I currently have, but will the be good enough?

I am not looking at the R or RP because if I do this the main goal is downsizing my gear and the size difference between my current gear and the R range would not be significant.

So people - am I missing anything? Is there any significant functionality that I would be missing? For those that have moved to the M series how have they found the image quality from the native lenses?

Money wise I stand to probably pocket $1000 after the change so the cost is not an issue.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Robert

SIGMA again announces EF-M lenses, and mount conversion service

2019.10.04 – SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of interchangeable lenses for the Canon EF-M mount digital camera series with APS-C image sensors. SIGMA will gradually introduce the lenses as members of the Contemporary line.
The new Canon EF-M mount models will feature a newly and exclusively developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Servo AF and lens aberration correction.

(deployads = window.deployads || []).push({});

The lineup will include the Contemporary line set of three prime lenses 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm. While retaining the compact, lightweight and outstanding image quality concepts of the Contemporary line, this new large-aperture lens series covering from wide to mid-tele angle provides the amount of bokeh and admirable brightness expected from F1.4 to be enjoyed on Canon EF-M mount cameras.

SOLVED: Canon PRO-4000, strange glitch or "streaks" at the edge of large prints

I'm printing a large, 66"x44" borderless print on my PRO-4000. I'm printing to a 44" roll of photo paper. I'm using Canon print studio pro. However, there is about a one inch area along the bottom of the print that I can only describe as a "glitch." There's a photo attached of a print I canceled once I realized it was doing this. The only way I can describe it is that it takes what is along the bottom edge of the photo and prints kind of a smear of that along the bottom edge of the print. Why is it doing this? It's about an inch wide, and only at the bottom of the print, not the top. There is nothing like this in the print itself when I look at it on my screen. Thanks.

RP problem

Hi,

I just bought my very first RF lens and noticed something while playing with it. Since I didn't have any lens with a control ring, I had never played with the settings to change what it mapped to, but now that I have, I realize the setting isn't persistent.

I changed it to be mapped to the ISO, but every time I turn off my camera, it reverts back to the default setting. I don't know if that is a flaw with the most recent firmware update, as I updated my camera's firmware before getting the lens.

Anyone has had that issue or know how to fix it?

Thanks

Patent: Cooling a modular Cinema Camera

Canon News has uncovered a patent that discusses cooling modular cinema cameras. As we’ve previously reported, we expect a lot more modular Cinema EOS cameras in the future. The drawings in this patent look closer to the ME20F-SH than any current Cinema camera.
Heat is the enemy of progress in a lot of things, and cinema cameras are no different. When bitrates and resolution increase, and you want to shrink the form factor of the camera, heat becomes a big issue.
The images for this patent seem to show an EF mount camera.
