Samyang 14mm f2.4 Premium review

looks like someone's got a new toy

https://www.ephotozine.com/article/samyang-premium-mf-14mm-f-2-4-lens-review-30229

"The Samyang 14mm f/2.4 lens proves itself to be a high class performer and also a very exciting lens to use. Manual focusing lends itself to use on a tripod with critical focusing, and when this is done the sharpness of the results can be stunning."

Bad news:

The Samyang 14mm f/2.4 lens is priced at £899

Patent: Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS With Built-in 1.4x and 1.7x Extender

HTML:
<p>We didn’t think the built in extender on the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x was going to be a one off. Now a patent showing an optical formula for a new EF 400mm f/2.8L IS with a 2 stage built in extender has appeared. This would give the lens a focal range of 400mm, 560mm & 680mm.</p>

Canon CP-E4 for Handheld Macro

Hi Everybody :)

There's a fantastic Australian photographer who does these brilliant photos of the peacock jumping spider.

I asked him how he manages to focus stack live, healthy animals and he advised he attaches a battery pack to his macro flash and can fire off 10 consecutive shots, which makes everything easier.

I simply love macro and am now considering purchasing a Canon CP-E4 battery pack for this purpose but would like to know if anyone has experience with either this technique or the CP-E4 unit and can offer me some advise before I proceed with purchasing one.

Any advice would really be appreciated

Kind regards

Reviews flying in: a speed read to keep up with all the new lenses

So much new glass!

So, at the present:

Canon 24-105 f/4L IS II: Jury is still out. Not enough reviews from trusted sources. But early word of mouth and one respected test site's work would imply that we may have a swing and a miss here (at least sharpness-wise). Some folks are worried the lens they've wanted refreshed for so long isn't better optically.

Canon 16-35 f/2.8L III: Could it be the sharpest UWA FF zoom on the planet? Possibly. But the vignetting -- oh the hysterically large degree of vignetting on the wide end -- has left some folks wondering if it's really a useable tool at 16mm f/2.8 on a FF rig. Dustin also has a nice review of this one.

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art
: Jury is still out, but early reviews range from very positive to hallelujah. LensTip claims it outresolves the Otus 85mm f/1.4, which is no small feat, and the same folks claim the AF is very consistent, which is reassuring. I await more information, but this is shaping up to be a hit.

Canon 50mm f/nooneknows IS USM: Can't seem to find any reviews out there on this one just yet. >:(

Sigma 12-24mm f/4 Art:
Again, reviews are limited, but what little data we've seen is impressive. It's no 11-24 f/4L, but it's also half the price.

Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2:
I've only seen TDP's review of this, but it looks to be a slight improvement optically over the first version.

Samyang 20mm F1.8 ED AS UMC: Haven't seen anything other than the ePhotozine review, which does include some Imatest work on a 6D. But it also comes with some iffy insights, like listing "Edges do not match centre" being listed as a 'Con', implying that the reviewer was bummed Samyang hadn't solved 'that whole physics thing'.

Glad to see so much new glass rolling out!

Have Canon increased their prices or are shops preparing for Black Friday?

I'd been watching prices in the UK for the EF100 F2.8L for a while and regretted not pulling the trigger when Jessops had it with a 10% discount over the weekend of 15/16 October at £593.

It subsequently went back up to £659 with other sellers listing it at £699.

Today I've noticed that at most well known outlets; WEX, Jessops, Calumet etc it's jumped to £899! Only one (non-photographic retailer) John Lewis still has it at £659.

So what's going on? A bit suspicious that they all put their prices up identically at the same time - is this due to Canon increasing prices or are they increasing them up before Black Friday in order to claim massive saving then??

I then contacted a couple of sites & price increases by Canon were blamed. When I mentioned there were sellers still selling it for £659 one suggested either last of their old stock or grey imports. Old stock may be the case but call me cynical but odd how numerous sellers all run out of old stock on the exact same day ;)

Patent: New Canon 0.82x Optical Viewfinder

HTML:
Canon has patented an 0.82x optical viewfinder for a DSLR. Canon uses a few different viewfinder magnifications for their DSLRs. For example, the EOS-1D X Mark II uses a 0.76x viewfinder, the EOS 5D Mark IV a 0.71x viewfinder and the EOS Rebel T6s a 0.82x viewfinder.</p>

Another Mention of a New EF 70-200mm Lens [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told again that Canon is developing a follow-up to the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. The new lens design is said to be a little bit lighter, a new IS system and optical upgrades as well.</p>
<p>While we weren’t given a timeframe on when we could expect an announcement, the source did say that the new lens appeared on an “internal roadmap”, which usually means the product is coming within 12 months. As with all things lenses, there can sometimes be significant delays (i.e. EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x).</p>
<p>The latest EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II was announced in March of 2010, which would make a 2017 announcement 18-24 months quicker than the previous update, as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS was announced in September of 2001.</p>
<p>I will note that this is the first time we’ve seen the aperture mentioned, we’ve been wondering if it was going to be a new f/4 or a new f/2.8.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

DXO, Fair and Balanced, Chapter 236: The D500 rulez, yo

In today's steaming pile of dreck, DXO has retested all of its Nikon mount glass on the D500 and made recommendations on which lenses were the best ones to buy.

Retesting is pretty common for them when new bodies come out, but their scoring -- oh, their scoring.

For reasons that we can only speculate, DXO appears to have put their thumb on the sat on the scales again with their black box, unpublished DXOMark Score.

Same lens. Different mount. Same or better individual scores for the Canon variant. See the DXOMark score, and feel free to giggle.

Wireless Tethering Canon 5D Mark IV

Hi All,
I was experimenting tethering a Canon 5D Mark IV to a PC using EOS Utility 3.
My first comment is that is seems to be overly complicated.
I understand the set up of the wireless, I think that is reasonably well explained and easy to do.

I'd have thought the first function of tethering software would be you take a photo through the viewfinder and this shows up on the screen so you can see what photo you took.
By default its set up for Thumbnails.
I made the Thumbnails as big as possible and seemed to have something set up now that the picture I am taking, takes up most of the screen (but not all).

It seems to be much easier to set up a Live view set up but when you take the photograph it goes immediately back to Live View.

I know the software is set up for 101 different uses and people but I would have expected tethered shooting to be set up so it's really easy to get going.

I looked at some videos on Youtube but they seemed to move to tethered shooting when they started using the camera through the viewfinder.

I was wondering if anyone have set it up and am I going the wrong way about it.

Any chance for a 7D Mark 'II+'?

Not the 7D Mark III but let's call it a Mark "II+" with two minor but noticeable and doable improvements Canon could make in the very near future, talking early 2017, features which should've been there in the first place.

1) a touchscreen! -- Once you've used one, it's hard to go back. Dual pixel AF deserves a touchscreen; also for pinch to zoom, swipe to review, to navigate menus. The 70D/80D and most recent Rebels have one, even the SL1/100D has a fixed touchscreen, why not the top-end 7D2?

2) built-in wi-fi -- Sure there's a quite cheap adapter available but it has meant giving up the SD slot and thus the dual card feature, so just put it in there.

Make this hypothetical 7D2+ available while they do R&D on wish list specs like a new sensor, maybe a faster drive that goes up to 12 fps, putting 4K in there, and all that for a full-blown Mark III. If Canon are planning a 7D3 release earlier than expected, then great. But, going by release cycles, as the 7D2 was released fairly recently (by Canon standards) in late 2014, with the original 7D in 2009, a Mark III could come as late as 2019, or at least late 2018. So in the meantime, just those two changes would make a 7D2+ a bit more future-proofed.

Scenic locations around Lake Shasta

I was looking for a proper forum to post this, not sure if it should be here. I am looking to visit Redding, CA and Lake Shasta and is the first time I will be visiting those areas. I will be going to the Crater Lake, and Klamath Falls as well but I am unable to determine where to go when in the Redding area, and around Lake Shasta for landscape photowalks.

Which scenic locations, or other lakes, streams, or vista points do you fine folks recommend I should definitely check out when I am there. I will be carrying the 16-35 and 70-200, some ND filters for long exposures, as well as my trusty tripod for this trip.

5D3 playback won't work in cold

Just wondering if anyone else experiences this (specifically with a 5D3, but perhaps other models as well). When the weather is cold the playback will not play back. I am not talking extreme temperatures, but say just above freezing (in the 40's Farenheit).

The camera will still take pictures fine and I can review them later when the camera warms up, but when it is cold it sometimes will not play back. It seems like this did not happen until recently. I am going to contact Canon to see if it can be fixed (before I go to Austria next February), but I want to know if it is a common issue.

TDP Image Quality posted - 24-105L II

At long last, here it is -- the new 24-105L II.

5DS R + 24-105L II vs. 24-105L I @ 24mm f/4:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=1072&Camera=979&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=355&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

Wow. The I version looks considerably better than the II in the center and mid-frame areas!

5DS R + 24-105L II vs. 24-105L I @ 105mm f/4:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=1072&Camera=979&Sample=0&FLI=5&API=0&LensComp=355&CameraComp=979&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=5&APIComp=0

Looks like a fair amount of purple fringing at 105mm for the II version and not the I version.

Color me disappointed. Most Mk II versions of L lenses don't get out the door without a clear bump in performance. I know those are just two simple comparisons (and he's only got one copy of the new lens), but they should have been softball pitches to swing at for Canon.

Wow.

SLR Lounge Review - Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art

SLRL doesn't typically do the data-heavy type of gear reviews this forum craves, but their Sigma 85 Art review did offer something rarely reported:

https://www.slrlounge.com/sigma-85mm-f1-4-art-review-the-beauty-of-this-beast/

We've discussed a fair amount about inconsistent Sigma 35mm Art and 50mm Art lens AF performance, in which it is neither front- nor back-focused but inconsistently missing (and therefore not dock-correctible). Most lens reviewers tend to dwell on (a) AF speed (b) AFMA/dock-correctibility rather than basic reliability.

LensTip reports AF hit rate, but tends to do it in lab controlled conditions. I think it's also helpful to check the phenonmenon in the field, and SLRL did just that:

"Using back-button AF with cross-type AF points on a Canon 5D Mark III, we put it through its’ paces. Out of all shots fired, the Sigma 85 Art only missed 30% (70/250) of the shots taken, and some due to unexpected movement of the subject. That is extremely proficient, especially considering that the Canon 85L, when put in the exact same scenarios, missed 40% (100/250) of shots, so chew on that.

The focus consistency is similar to the previous Art lenses, but perhaps a bit improved. The missed focus moments aren’t as apparent as seen in the 50mm and 35mm Art lenses, meaning that the 85mm barely misses the mark and then regains focus upon the next click while it’s Art siblings take a bit more time to compose themselves."

This is the first hit rate study I've seen on this lens, and it's a very promising finding. I consider AF inconsistency the #1 weakness of Sigma's Art Primes, so stacking up favorably to the 85L -- even in a non-controlled / potentially not apples-to-apples scenario -- is very good news.

I welcome more work in this area [cough save us Dustin, you're our only hope cough], but for now, the 85 Art is looking good.

Patent: Canon Mount Replacement Camera System

HTML:
<p>Canon patents a mount replacement camera system, which is likely related to the soon-to-be-released Cinema EOS C700 and an already available service for the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. I’m not sure if there’s any reason for this on a DSLR.</p>

Canon 5D Mark IV Long Term Review from Dustin

Hi everyone. I've been using the 5D Mark IV since the beginning of September and have completed my final verdict on it.

You can find my text review here: http://bit.ly/2fRMkVW
My final video review is here: http://bit.ly/2eSVXBc
My whole video playlist on the 5D Mark IV (Video features, Dynamic Range, High ISO, Resolution, etc...): http://bit.ly/2dt7M4k
Image Gallery (with 4K Screen Grabs): http://bit.ly/2cwFmEX

I think you'll find that once the initial drama settles down (and perhaps the price drops a bit), that people will pretty much love using the 5D Mark IV.
