Any thing Shot with a 5ds/r

To exemplify how the 5DSR performs in higher ISO, posted in another thread, I made two snap shots of The Local Lion. I thought they might be of interest on this thread also.

The first one is shot at ISO6400. Only edits is 1:1 crop, Highlight -25, NR Luminance +30. A more thorough edit could of course make them a lot better. I think this shows that this camera is a lot more versatile than many non-users believe.

The one following is shot at ISO12800, same edits.

Shot with the 100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS II

A reasonable question is why Canon did not allow an ISO setting of 25600. I am sure we could make some fairly good results also at that setting.

I've not picked up my 5D3 since I got the 5Ds. It's doing good work, although my poor computer is much more strained by the bigger files. All shots handheld.

Edinburgh Castle from Prince's Street Gardens, an in-camera HDR (but reprocessed in Lightroom); 24-105L: 24mm, f/8, ISO 200).

A male eider flexing his muscles; 500L+1.4xIII: 700mm, f/5.6, ISO 400.

There doesn't seem to be an MP-E thread, so I'll post those here too...

A water cricket, MP-E, 600EX-RT: f/10, ISO 400.

Finally something a little silly, the surface of a glass of champagne; MP-E, 600EX-RT: f/16, ISO 400.

I'm having a senior moment. I'm inching closer to getting the 1DX II but am troubled by only one thing. I can't afford two new cameras so my 6D will be the backup. I've been pretty happy with it and it's got roughly the same MP as the 1DX II. I have been cropping shots a fair amount and feel that 20 MP is not shabby but the 5DSR is strutting its stuff here pretty well. Since shooting with the 1D4, I've acquired a taste for the 1D series and just wish it had an extra 4 or so MP. I'm sure I'm not alone on that count. What keeps hitting me is that 5 fps is close to 6D and not very desirable and the 1DX II video is very exciting, not to mention the AF, so I'm thinking a 5DSR for me would be a mistake. My planned purchase is early September. Any thoughts anyone (Unfortunately, I viewed a video review from the husband/wife pair that triggered this)?

Jack,
If I had to choose one, it would take me about 1/8000 of a second to go for the 1DXII. The only thing the 5DSR is doing better is resolution, in addition to being lighter and smaller. With your attraction to birds in particular, I am sure the 1DXII would be a great choice. But at the same time you argue that size and weight matters and that cropping is an issue. So, if you can live with the max ISO12800 setting, including the noise performance and 5 fps, you may want to reconsider.

For the price of a 1DXII you could get a mint condition 1DX and a 5DSR. Well worth a thought.

Knowing your observations Jack I'd have to say this is the suggestion I would have thought suited you best, heck you could even sell the 6D and be better off! Eldar has the 600 and the 200-400 so he is rarely 'focal length limited' whereas your 300 even with the 2xTC doesn't give you that range. There are a lot of wildlife shooters out there using the 5DS/R, most notable is Arthur Morris who even uses his for some BIF http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2016/02/22/600-ii5ds-r-raptors-in-flight-is-this-the-sickest-blog-post-ever/ read through his blog, he has nothing but great things to say about the 5DS/R. And the three pointers that Eldar gives to the 5DSR are exactly the pointers you are most interested in.

Mind you, all cameras are so good now you will find somebody doing exactly what you are thinking. It seems to me it is more about the way each of us as individuals shoots that makes the most difference, if the camera feels right we will get the images we are looking for.

But yes, a 1DXRS is what I'd really like ;)

Thanks guys! If it wasn't for the new AF with 4K video and a few other items I'd be tempted towards the 5DSR but then I think how I'm presently not pleased with 4 1/2 fps and after reading the Canon link piece maybe frustration with the file sizes would ensue so .......... Maybe I'll wait for the 1DXSR @ 28 MP - just kidding, September is a deadline. ;)

I'm not nuts about the weight but now the 6D feels like I'm only gripping half a camera. Hiking with the 1D4 was OK so I guess weight won't be a major issue with me. So, I think the senior moment has passed.

Jack, if the idea of 5DSR file sizes has you balking don't even dream of shooting 4K video, 4K 60p is running 5.6GB per minute!

Now that's good for a big laugh followed by some sober thoughts!! Actually, I was thinking more relative to editing than storage but no doubt you are right. So, it's time for a new computer too. I think HD 120 is appealing but that's also going to be huge. Obviously I haven't done much video and have lots to learn.

Great shots by Eldar, Keith Brezeal, Arbitrage and Scyrene with the 5DS/R..
I have posted an image taken with the 5DSR of lions in Kenya, after sunset, when ambient light was pretty low, and little contrast left. Image was taken with the EF 500L f4 IS ii, 1/250sec at f4.0, Iso 3200 in raw. Processed in LR with light sharpening, warming tones, brightening subject. Only noise reduction done in LR to the lions eyes. No noise reduction on the background at all. No cropping. Downsized to 1500 pixels on the long edge for this post.
Cheers
