Canon EOS R5 Mark II Specifications

Man, wish they would have bumped up the MP on this sensor to compete with Sony. Between the news of the R5 staying at 45 as well as the R1 not being a larger MP jack-of-all-trades, this leaves me wishing for a little more with Canon. They\'ve taken an extra few years to get the R1 out...for what? No global shutter. No larger MP sensor to top the Z9 or A1. Seems like a major flop, IMO, like they tried to throw everything they could at it with the extra time but failed, so they\'re rolling these out.
I guess Canon decided to make an already very good camera better in an evolutionary approach. As I explained elsewhere, more Megapixels do not always deliver more real image information - because of physics:

Plus, a global electronic shutter architecture eats up space for the pixels on the sensor surface, so these pixels have to be smaller. Smaller pixels = collection of less light in a given time period = more noise @ higher ISOs = less dynamic range. Remember Canon being dissed for bad DR? Now Sony seems to follow Canon from 10 yrs ago:

The biggest problem I guess will Canon's marketing face with the R5 II, because they can't sell fancy spec stuff... ;)

I just received my 200-800. The funniest thing about it was that it was packed in a box the size of what an L lens would typically be, inside a carrying case. But since it isn't an L, and doesn't come with a carrying case, there was a cardboard box inside the cardboard box :D It included a kind of useless strap, but (yay) a lens hood. It's about the same weight as a 28-70 (though of course much longer), and the two can share 95mm filters. The ergonomics are good, but I miss a separate control ring + focus ring like the 100-500 has. The control/focus ring is also not clicky, obviously.

It was pretty cloudy when it came yesterday, and I haven't done much with it, but I snapped the photo below handheld in my back yard at 800mm, at 1/800 f/9 ISO 6400 on an R5. It's literally the only photo I took - I had only a couple of minutes. Pixel peeping, it doesn't look tack sharp at 800mm, but obviously, some of that's could be me.

I also own the 100-500. I don't think that it's an either/or. I do not like the 100-500 with a 1.4x extender (because of the protrusion at/reduction of minimum zoom). The autofocus on the 200-800 is very fast (and very usable); impressive, in my opinion, given the aperture.

In the grand scheme of things, I think I'm pretty happy owning/keeping both, though the overlap means I'd rarely, if ever, pack both with me.

very nice shot, and congratulations for your 200-800mm. I still wait for mine, my local shop has me on its list for the first copies...

Nice photo. But when I zoom in, it is not sharp at all. Can you suggest why?

I was interested in the 200-800 also. I already have the 100-500, which is just fantastic. Christopher Frost just put out a video on the 200-800 and I was a little disappointed with his results/tests. Seems it's pretty soft, especially at 800mm. But for the price still very decent.
Here's some proper testing, not YouTube clickbait.

But what about ***?
High dynamic range dual gain stills?
Pixel shift that produces raw?
Raw histogram?..
This is Canon. Pick one.

Stacked BSI sensor, good news. Besides a better sensor it would be nice to have a tilt and flip screen. Ditch that stupid micro-hdmi, Dump the record limit. Add proper C-LOG2 to unify with EOS C. Next gen pixel shift done in camera with artefacting control. How about a Timelapse movie mode that supports CLOG2 or CRAW.

My 90D and M5 have a button on top of the dial you need to hold before the dial moves. I wonder why they removed that in the R8 and R6ii?
I hated the mode dial lock on 80D. Prevents one R.hand control on the cam.

I don't know why some don't check their mode settings and start shooting. And for those years Canon listened to them and implemented.

I would say for R6-series and below should stick with this design.

I know. Sony put with it a lot or pressure on CaNikon to move forward, and this deserves a lot of respect. A strong competition is the best we users can hope for.
Sony push the a1 to fight R5, which I don't see it as a fair fight. It's like comparing D5 to 5D3. a7r5 is miles behind R5 when comes to video(4k/8k crop, slow sensor readout). So only Z8 is keeping up a good fight with R5.

Sony's push is mainly on the lenses, and I'm slightly disappointed Canon are not reacting fast.

Record limit is all gone. Why we still on about that.

Clog2 is really wishful. I doubt it, but if Canon is generous you can come to pitchfork me.

If some animal or bird flashes by and you have to take shot in a fraction of a second but your mode dial has moved while your camera has been bouncing around on its shoulder strap, then you can miss the shot. There are simply occasions when you don’t have the time to check before shooting. Never have problems with the R5 electronic mode dial and you can flick through settings in a fraction of a setting.

Current R5 eshutter is 12 bit so hopefully that goes to 14bit in H+
Not sure of the benefit of no mechanical shutter except for cost. It would need some way to cover the sensor when the lens is changed in any case
Hi, I own a R5.
Do you confirm that using the electronic first curtain shutter is still at 14bit?

If readout speed is at or less than 2ms global and mechanical shutters are irrelevant.
What do you base that threshold on?

Whether you have a visual effect from rolling shutter is a function both of readout speed and of what you're shooting. Additionally, global shutter is uniquely capable of avoiding banding when shooting scenes that contain electronic displays. Further, there are significant advantages to flash sync available to global shutters.

The 2ms you mention is not really the readout speed that contributes to rolling shutter, but the time it takes to transfer the data and reset the sensor.
The readout speed of a global sensor is zero, no rolling shutter at all.

For high framerate usage that is a distinction without difference, but for flash sync and propellors it is a huge difference.
