Is it, though? Canon did not seem to think so. They did replace the also-excellent EF-S 10-22 with the slower, darker and cheaper EF-S 10-18.

Like the EF 50mm f/1.4 Canon didn't update the EF-S 17-44 f/2.8. I think considering the resolution increases in APSC sensors, they would have updated it if it sold enough.
