Here's another one of my favourite birds from my recent trip to Mexico. These guys were a bit trickier to track down than the Orange-breasted Bunting I posted a few weeks ago. Worth the hunt!

If you want to see more from the trip I popped a gallery up on my site - HERE

Cheers!

Puzzled about a multi-purpose lens for my Canon R5 for documentary/travel photos

Hello. I have a Canon R5 with several lenses: EF 8-15 fisheye f4 (with RF adapter), RF 15-35 f2,8, RF24-70 f2,8, RF 70-200 f2,8, RF 100-500 and 1,4X extender.
I do astrophotography (Milky Way and Northen Lights) as well and nature, documentary/travel (meaning: street portraits, street scenes, ceremonies during my excursions, building, landscape).
In some travel situations bringing a number of lenses is just not practical (too heavy for my backpack, hassle to switch all the time lenses during an event/scenery, etc...).
So I think that buy also a multi-purpose lens might be a good idea (better than buy another camera body, which cost more money and will make my travel bag too heavy plus will make myself not conformable to walk around...).
So I am wondering what is, based on your experience, the best zoom lens (from wide angle to telephoto) I can get in the market? For best I mean: most bright, great sharpness, robust, possibly weather sealing, possibly light?

Based on my search, I came out with 3 possible options:

a. Sigma 18-300mm 3,5/6,3 DC Marco OS HSM Contemporary
b. Sigma 24-105mm f4 DG OS HSM
c. Canon RF 24-105 F4L IS USM

In principle, the option a is the best (wider and more telephoto too).... But what about overall image quality? As said, when I travel a bright lens, very precise and quick AF on different conditions, very sharp and possibly not too heavy to bring on a plane and to walk for several hours around a village, a city, a busy market or a forest in Amazzonia or Indonesia what I need.

Your option is very much appreciated.
TIA.

Canon R5 issue - camera suddenly stopped writing photos to the CFe and SD cards and lost a batch of them

Hi there,

I've had my first serious issue when working with my R5. I'm a recent owner and have only shot around 5.000 pictures with it, with no problems until today.

I was shooting an event ceremony, 45 minutes in, when I tried to play and peak the last pictures of an important moment of the event I had just gone through, and suddenly realized that the camera was displaying something similar to 'No Card1 detected' (can't remember exactly in the rush of things).

As far as I remember the R5 had been shooting (I was using the EVF) and the flash was firing as expected during those last shots, but just saw the message. I tried to recycle (turn off/on) the camera but then I had a message the camera was saving 23 photos to the SD card ... but never progressed.

I have the camera configured to simultaneously record RAWs to the CFe and JPGs to the SD. The R5 is on the latest v1.5.2 firmware.

I remember just opening the card door and removing the cards for a couple of seconds. The camera turned off and when turned back on, both cards were again recognised and operational as usual. I continued with the shoot with no other issues.

Unfortunately, I've lost 23 photos of an important moment (none were recorded to the SD card either). Thankfully, at least they were captured by my partner with the B-cam.

I all my first-amateur then pro years, I've never had anything similar to this issue. I've searched through the internet and have not found anything that resembles the issue I had today. It was not a 'camera lockup' (I've read those threads), at least I think it wasn't.

My Sony Tough CFe 128MB and my Sandisk Extreme Pro SD had been working faultlessly up to the day.

Obviously, I'm now very concerned because this leaves open to other occurrences of something I may not realize until too late (as I said, the camera seemed to be shooting ok through the EVF until I tried to double check the last shots on the LCD)

Anyone has heard of anything similar to this issue?

Who would like to see a RECESSED sensor camera using the new APS-C sensor? Retrograde fixed lens. Hear me out

How about the new Canon APS-C sensor being used on RF-S but in a retro fixed lens package?

The reason to jam the sensor back is so you can use the frontal area behind the mount for lens optics. This is how the Fujifilm X100V accomplishes such a fast lens inside a pancake profile. Half of the F2 lens on the X100V is jammed behind the camera and the sensor is positioned near the back screen.

Now granted with Canon technology they're able to make the EF-M 22-2 pancake with a small profile and retain F2 aps-c speed on a normally-placed ILC sensor flange. So imagine what they could do with a recessed sensor using a fixed lens? May be able to even put the lens entirely in the body and create an electronic cover (we can dream can we) but honestly i'd take a small pancake profile lens but minimally F2 speed RETRO steel, retro dial X100V type camera from Canon. What do you guys think? Everyones doing the retro thing so lets see Canon do it next! Optical viewfinder too!

Here are a few Canon EOS R10 specifications [CR3]

The Canon EOS R10 will become the entry-level RF Mount camera with APS-C image sensors. I think it’s safe to say that this camera is the likely successor to the Canon EOS M5 & Canon EOS M6 Mark II, the latter was recently discontinued by Canon.
Canon EOS R10 Specifications

24.2mp
15-23fps (Mechanical/Electronic)
1x UHS-II (supported)

I expect that we’ll see a flurry of information about the Canon EOS R10 and Canon EOS R7 over the next couple of weeks before the scheduled May 24, 2022 announcement.

Here is what Canon is announcing next, including the EOS R7, EOS R10 and RF-S lenses [CR3]

It looks like we have a few surprises on our hands from Canon, as they gear up to announce new products this month, which is another pleasant surprise.
Canon will announce the long rumoured Canon EOS R7, a camera we leaked the specifications on yesterday. There will also be a second camera, the Canon EOS R10. We’re going to assume that the Canon EOS R10 is an APS-C camera that will likely take the place of the EOS M5/EOS M6 Mark II. It was rumoured quite some time ago that Canon would announce multiple APS-C RF mount cameras.
Canon will also announce a couple of RF-S lenses.
Canon will announce the following gear...

Canon R5: How do you delete custom configuration files?

Just upgraded to the R5 and I was thrilled to discover that in addition to C1-3 modes you can save your favorite configs to a memory card. The only problem is that I don’t know how to delete these files, and there are a few that are mistakes I no long want….I don’t have a card reader and have been plugging my camera into my Mac via the provided USB cable, but that only works to export images off the memory card, can look into the card and delete the config files. Do I just need to buy a CFast reader or is their another way?

Patent: Electronic control for tilt-shift lenses

A patent showcasing some new tilt-shift lens technology has surfaced from Canon. We have had both the Canon TS-R 14mm f/4L and Canon TS-R 24mm f/3.5L on our RF lens roadmap for quite some time. It has been rumoured that these will be autofocus tilt-shift lenses.
The patent here discusses electronic control of of the tilt function of a tilt-shift lens.
If Canon pulls off both autofocus and electronic controls on their new RF mount tilt-shift lenses, that will be pretty revolutionary.

What would you do?

Well, it looks like I'll finally be able to start getting RF lenses next year. 1 per year. I've just about decided to get the 28-70 for the sake of versatility. I already have 5 various 135mm lenses and other manual lenses. It just seems the 28-70 will be a good starting point for me... like it was the last time around.

The only focal length I don't have covered for portraits is 85mm.

What is your plan?

New Delkin CFexpress Card to launch thursday, it will be the fastest card for the Canon EOS R5 yet

Delkin lent us a new CFexpress Type B card, to be released later this week, which our tests show to be the fastest card yet for the Canon R5. The new Delkin Black 325 GB card shot 325 images in 30 seconds, edging out the previous title holder, one of the newer Angelbirds.
Video shooters will be pleased to hear it managed heat well enough to allow our R5 to shoot 8K video for the full 29 minutes and 59 seconds without overheating.
The card will retail for $430 starting on Thursday. The comprehensive CFexpress Type B review will be updated shortly to reflect the results of this card, as well as one or two additional new ones currently under testing.

Why do people insist if a lens' front plastic (the one with the filter diameter) has become lose, the lens must have been fixed?

I'm trying to sell a used lens. The thin plastic ring in front of the front element, that has the lens model and filter thread, has become lose with time. For some odd reason, a couple of interested photographers insist this is a sign the lens must have been fixed, which it wasn't.

Is it a negotiation technique, or is it a real sign I've never encountered?

70-300L with extenders on R series body?

Canon states that the 70-300L in not compatible with either the 1.4 or 2.0 lens extender. I understand this is because the back portion of the internals extends too far into the body that it causes contact with the mirror. Since the R series have no internal mirror, does that mean the the 70-300L could be used with either of the extenders along with the ef-rf adapter?
