New Cinema Lenses To Be 20-50mm and 45-135mm

We just got word that the new Cinema EOS zoom lenses will be a 20-50mm and a 45-135mm, with an aperture wider than the current zoom maximum apertures (f/2.8).
Mounts will be EF and PL, as expected. The image circles will be a bit wider than full frame so as to accommodate various video sensors that are slightly larger, such as the VistaVision format employed by some RED and Panavision cameras.

Nikon Releases Z 800mm at 1/3 Cost of Canon’s

Nikon this morning released its Z 800mm f/6.3 PF VR S, a big milestone for the Z mount, which until some weeks ago lacked most serious supertelephoto glass. Rumored only recently to be launching, the lens turns out to be light (5.25 pounds) and cheap ($6,500). It employs Nikon’s PF fresnel technology to significantly shorten the lens.

While review copies seeded around the YouTuber community were tethered to agreements preventing people from commenting on image quality with the pre-production models, the MTF chart found on Nikon’s site is pretty breathtaking, as seen at left.
Because the Nikon lens is a PF fresnel design, the MTF chart may reflect theoretical production perfection that isn’t quite reached in actual manufacturing. It will be some time before samples in the wild confirm what the graph suggests...

Canon applies for High Magnification Super Telephoto Zoom Patent

Atypically in patent embodiments, it’s usually difficult for super-telephoto zoom lens to take full advantage of the RF mount.
One reason is that you simply can’t use a Tele extender if the rear elements are sitting too far back in the lens.  Because of this, at times, it’s difficult to determine if a patent application is for RF or EF lenses because there’s so much room in the rear of the lens from the last element to the sensor plane, that it could be either mount type.

In this Japan Patent application, 2022-053697, Canon is applying for some higher magnification (shorter MFD) super-telephoto zooms.
These embodiments show a back focus distance of around 30mm, which would make them more extender non-friendly for the entire zoom range.  But they could fit the extender on for only the telephoto part of their zoom, similar to the RF 100-500L.  With a short back focus distance, these embodiments are certainly RF mount only.

Canon Survey

I just received a Canon marketing survey. It was basically asking about which social web sites I used to follow Canon, and which influencers I followed.

My answer was none of them. The sites I use most were not mentioned, TDP, DPR, FM or CR were not covered. I inserted them in the survey when I had a opportunity. It has me wondering if Canon sees the speciality photography sites as useful to their marketing.

Further clarification on the upcoming Canon CINI lenses

We have received a detailed clarification (thank you) on the upcoming two cinema lenses that we leaked back in early March.
According to the source, these new lenses are not based on the RF mount.  The lenses have been designed for the EF and PL mounts.  This actually makes sense for Canon’s CINI lenses as the lenses would then support the largest possible market share of high-end cinema cameras.     It would also be impractical to support PL and the RF mount in one lens as the PL mount is 52mm for the flange to sensor distance, versus 20mm for the RF mount.  Meanwhile, the EF mount which is also a quasi-industry standard has a 44mm flange to sensor distance, making the conversion to PL far more realistic.
These lenses are also designed for full-frame and are 8K capable, and even larger than full-frame image circles. The source mentions that the lenses are capable of supporting Alexa LF.  They are also rumored to be the fastest cinema zooms available on the market when they are...

New Canon 600mm f/4 Design Uses Spotting Scope Trick

Just a month after the Canon R5 came out in 2020, Canon filed a patent application – published only this morning – That attempts to make a smaller 600mm f/4, without resorting to fresnel DO optics and avoiding catadioptric designs that use a central mirror that blocks some light and causes doughnut bokeh.

The new design places two optical tubes atop each other, with a couple figure-four mirror arrangements that bump the light from the top, larger aperture tube eventually down to the lower tube that contains most of the focusing and aberration-correcting lens groups. The movement of the light between the two tubes takes up 575mm of the 600mm focal length, allowing for significant length savings.

RF 500 F4L Updates

Curious if there are any legitimate updates on this lens, as to weight, overall size and most importantly when/if it will be available for purchase. I am in the process of going all mirrorless, and while my 500 F4 Mk II is working very well, I would welcome w size/weight reduction. This thing of getting older and having bilateral frozen shoulders is making me hope for a lighter option.

All that said, I have not found any recent updates. I know with the worldwide chip shortage my wait may be longer than desired (already is for that matter ), but any relevant updated info is appreciated! Thx

  Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D for EF: question for astrophotography

Hello. I own a Canon R5 with several lenses including the 8-15mm EF fisheye and the 15-35 f2,8 RF which I use mostly for astrophotography (Milky Way and Northern light).
I just came across the latest Laowa 12mm f2,8 BUT I am not sure if can somehow fit between the EF Canon fisheye which I already own and the 15-35mm RF lens specifically for those kind of pictures that I am interested to taken.... (Ideally a brighter f 1,8 or f2.0 maximum would be better).

Any comment?

Laowa introduces the 20mm f/4 Zero-D shift lens for Canon RF and EF

Laowa has released the Laowa 20mm f/4 Zero-D Shift lens for both the Canon EF and the Canon RF mount.  This lens has no electronic connections but for a shift lens that is pretty common.
The lens is currently available from Laowa’s website, and it will most likely end up on Adorama and other retailers soon.
When you purchase from Laowa, you are actually purchasing essentially a medium format lens, then choosing your shift mechanism, and then the mount type.  For the RF version, that comes to $1349 – certainly a bargain when it comes to ultra wide shifting lenses.  Keep in mind this lens does not tilt, only shift – but for architecture, that’s usually exactly what you need to do.

Canon registers new Cinema EOS camera in Indonesia

Indonesian regulatory authorities saw Canon register what it called a “digital cinema camera,” with the model number ID0157. While this could be the Indonesian introduction of the R5c, Canon typically is consistent across countries with its product ID numbers, and the ID0157 appears to be novel.
This comes a few weeks after rumors of a Cinema EOS C5 surfaced, which would be a cross between the recently-released R5c and something with the form factor of the EOS C70. Canon also had some recent patent applications published that provided more of a box camera design, as pictured above.

Canon Releases New (Lacquerware) Lens Hoods

At least no chips were used up in Canon’s most recent product release: lacquerware lens hoods. Instead, they’re designed to hold chips. The Canon Japan swag is priced around the same price as Canon’s actual lens hoods, which says something about the markup on molded plastic.

Only a few dozen pieces were created and some were still available yesterday, according to new.mynavi.jp, from the Canon Japan site. Searching the Japanese online store this morning, however, seems to indicate they are all sold out.
They weren’t designed to actually latch onto their respective lenses, but rather to set flat on a table. The hoods, when available, were priced between about $40 and $145 USD.

Canon Patent Application for Drone Camera Gimbal

As discovered by CanonNews while this is hardly new technology that will shock the industry, it’s intriguing that Canon spent what seems to be a considerable amount of time drafting a patent application on a drone (or as they also say, any moving vehicle) consumer camera gimbal.

C70 firmware Update adds 4K and 1080p Cinema RAW Light recording

Canon has announced a firmware update to the C70 to provide Cinema RAW light internal recording for 4K and 1080p recording.
Also according to CineD, you can record in both Cinema RAW LT (up to 4k 60p and ST (up to 4k 30p) modes and also HQ mode but up to 2K in an s16 crop.

More, Cheaper CFexpress Cards for High-End Canon Bodies

In the past few weeks there have been a bunch of new CFexpress card launches. We are fortunate to have most of the companies sending us samples to performance test. Expect some results starting this coming week. What we can already report is that the average price of cards is coming down.
Where you had to by a 2 TB card previously to get pricing near $0.25 per GB, several brands have been reducing the cost of their 512 GB and even smaller cards to pricing approaching $0.30 per GB. Just today, CanonPriceWatch pointed to a ProGrade deal along those lines, although they did this with their Gold line of cards, which are slower than most brands.
Pergear released a whole suite of cards last week as well, with similar pricing...

Canon Attempts New Supertele Patents

Several new catadioptric designs (commonly referred to as “mirror” lenses) appeared in a patent application to Japanese authorities, including a 1200mm f/8 and an 800mm f/5.6.
First called out in a post on An Image on a Sensor, the embodiments show typical “mirror lens” construction, but with a larger-than-typical number of lens groups and elements extending from the mirror optical tube, back toward the sensor.
This may imply a much higher level of aberration correction than is normal in this type of lens. Most catadioptric lenses built for cameras are attempts to get at large focal lengths as cheaply as possible, and the catadioptric design allows for more light gathering with less glass.
