The Canon EOS R1 is coming, here are a few things to expect

While we still wait for the Canon EOS R3 to begin shipping, and witness a Nikon comeback with the exciting Z 9, there are obviously questions now on how Canon will respond with an EOS R1, which is all but guaranteed to be coming in 2022.
When is the Canon EOS R1 coming?
I have been told we should expect the Canon EOS R1 to begin shipping in Q4 of 2022. An announcement may come as early as Q3.
Will the Canon EOS R1 have a global shutter?
While this has been rumoured in the past, it’s sounding more and more like it won’t. We’re seeing sensor readout speeds that may be negating the need for a global shutter and I expect the processing power in the EOS R1 to be insane.
Who is the target market for the Canon EOS R1?
Think of the Canon EOS R1 as a 5D series DSLR, a camera built for pretty much every situation. Quoting a...

Problem with AF with R5 and EF 500mm f4 mk1 and converters...

hello every body,
after a few issue with my R5 and 500mm f4 mk1, with AF, everything went perfectly in order,
no more issue, even with EF 1.4x converter.
I use official RF-EF converter.
firmware is the last.
I recently bought Canon EF converter x2, tried it with 500mm and R5 with no problem, even tried 2x + 1.4x converters, no problem, AF worked.
I switched lens and came back to 500mm with converters and... no AF at all (servo or one shot), mount the 500mm with no converters and ... no AF, tried 500mm +1.4x, no AF.
switched back to RF lens, AF is perfect, swithed to another EF lens (sigma 105mm 1.4 art) and no problem with AF.
But still, no AF with 500mm f4.
i reset the R5, nothing change, reinstall firmware, nothing change.
what's the problem here?
thank you for your help.

Canon releases Q3 2021 financials, and lets us know 2 more RF lenses are coming this year

Canon has released its financial report for Q3 of 2021. All things considered, Canon will be pretty close to achieving projected sales numbers, with only a small drop to their sales projections due to the global chip shortage.
It also looks like we’ll see two more RF lenses announced in 2021 according to Canon’s presentation materials. There are currently 24 RF mount lenses including the RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Lens Fisheye.
Imaging-Cameras
The camera market remained solid thanks to the strength of personal consumption, particularly in Europe and the United States, and the launch of new full-frame mirrorless cameras by each company stimulated the need for high-quality image expression. However, due to the global shortage of parts, the size of this year’s market is now projected to be 5.9 million units, 100 thousand units fewer than in our previous projection. Similarly, we expect our own unit sales to be 2.95 million units, 50 thousand units fewer than in our previous projection.

Wildlife with the R3

I had some off time between workshops, so I headed out to scout and try out the new R3 thanks to Chas Glatzer and CanonUSA. The focus and low light performance is quite amazing. It took a bit adjusting to the eye controlled focus tracking, but I'm growing to like it more and more.

Will it replace my R5 as my main body for wildlife? I doubt it. I’ve become spoiled by the R5's detail and cropabilty.

That said, in low light (it’s definitely the cleanest high ISO files of any camera I’ve shot) or where I need 30fps the R3 would get the nod. They are two different tools, one not better than the other.

Review: Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM by Christopher Frost

One of my favourite lens reviewers Christopher Frost has completed his review of the brand new Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM.
The review showcases all of the strengths and weaknesses of Canon’s new $300 prime lens for the RF mount. Keep realistic expectations for this little lens, it is $300 after all.
Interestingly, you cannot turn off distortion correction in your EOS R body with this lens. Canon has decided to use the camera body to make up for optical weaknesses, which is probably just fine for most applications.
Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM Key Features

First ultra-wide-angle, fixed focal length RF lens
High image quality and bright, fixed f/2.8 maximum aperture
A stepping motor (gear-type STM) that provides smooth & quiet continuous AF during video recording
Supremely lightweight and...

Christopher Frost reviews the RF 16mm f/2.8

In short:
- Nice and small (but you knew that)
- Sharp wide open in the centre, but soft in the corners at all apertures. Due to huge amount of software stretching of the origjnal distorted images
- Little coma (surprise)
- Very little flare
- Lots of focus breathing for video

The poor image quality in the corners would tend to reduce its value as an astro lens. What wasn't clear was how much cropping is needed to get to good resolution. I'll stick top my Samyang 14/2.8 as my astro lens.

Switching to R System. Which EF Lenses will you sell or keep?

Passing the time waiting for the R3 to ship and wondering what lenses people may sell or keep as they convert to R system. I anticipate selling my last EF mount body (1DX III) when the R3 arrives and deciding what lenses to keep or sell. If you are going full on mirrorless, what are you thinking of keeping/selling?

My thoughts:

Definitely sell: 70-200 2.8; 100-400; 24-105. These are no brainers. I have the RF versions and I'm only hanging on to the EF versions until the R3 arrives.

Also in this category is the 150-600 Sigma Contemporary. It's a great lens, but the main advantage to this lens was that it paired well with the 7DII, which I've since sold. The single f8 autofocus point on the 7DII made using the 100-400 with extender less useful than the Sigma. That's no longer an issue.

Probably sell: 70-300 L, 24mm 2.8. I probably should have sold these long ago as I seldom use them, but kept them for sentimental reasons. Both are underrated lenses. The 70-300 L is compact and nice as a travel zoom, but I usually want more reach. The 24 2.8 is a handy little lens, but I just don't use it that often.

Keep for now: 100mm 2.8 macro L, 16-35 f4, 8-15 fisheye. At this time, I see no great advantage to switching out the 100mm and 16-34 for the RF versions. I'm kind of intrigued by the extra width of the 14-35 f4, but not enough to feel any urgency at this time. I'm a little put off by the focus breathing reports of the RF macro, and I don't shoot macro enough to justify switching that out at this time. Of course, there is no current replacement for the 8-15 fisheye, but even if one existed, I'm not sure there would be any reason to buy it since this is a lens that I only use a few times a year.

So, what are others thinking? Are you going full mirrorless and if so, what lenses are you planning to keep and what lenses are on your list to replace as money allows?

R6 noise when camera turned off and on

I was wondering about the sound my new R6 makes when it is turned off. This occurs after the sensor clean occurs and sounds like the anti dust shutter moving into place, or could this be related to the IBIS being turned off and on. It’s also evident when the camera is turned on.

i do get a less obvious sound when turning on and off of my older EOS R, but this camera has has a more solid body and no IBIS.

Any ideas.

Thanks

Pete

New EVF modes in the R3

I came across this today:

It mentioned 2 things I didn't know already:
  1. The 'OVF' simulation mode puts the EVF in a strong HDR mode to get more detail in both highlights and shadows. Rudy points out it doesn't make it optical :) I had heard about this mode, but not a description on what it actually does.
  2. There's a mode where it will keep the lens stopped down, so you get a proper exposure and DoF simulation without having to keep the DoF preview pressed down.
Number 2 sounds like a nice thing to have on other R cameras, but I bet we will only see that in future releases, not in firmware updates.

Behind The Shot interviews Jeff Cable, to talk about using the EOS R3 in the real world

Steve Brazill from Behind The Shot had a chance to interview our favourite Olympic photographer, Jeff Cable. If you remember, Jeff was one of the most active shooters on the web using the Canon EOS R3 at the Tokyo Games.
The discussion about the Canon EOS R3 begins around the 9:58 mark, which is where I have queued up on the video.
Jeff gives us some great insight into Canon’s secrecy with pre-release cameras, as well as how the camera performed… A camera he ended up using for 99% of everything he shot at the Olympics. Jeff brought a couple of EOS R5s to shoot with, but the EOS R3 outperformed the

Patent: Focal reducers for RF cinema applications

Canon News has uncovered a Canon patent showing off some focal reducers in their latest round of patents.
This patent is for RF mount Cinema cameras that would reduce the focal length of full-frame lenses on Super35 image sensors. These are not for EOS R cameras and certainly not for EOS M cameras.
The lens used for the embodiments is a 50mm f/1.4 full-frame EF mount lens.  The total lens length in the embodiments will show the 50mm lens as well as the focal plane distance which is 20mm, plus the reducer.

Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM: First Impressions

I ordered the Canon RF 100-400mm yesterday, it arrived this morning, and the lens now "Pre-order" status on the website. I had time for just a few tests and one or two shots only, so I'll give my initial impressions and follow up later with more. I do have the RF 100-500mm and an EF 100-400mm II (for a 5DSR), and they are my reference points.

The RF 100-400mm is just so light in comparison and in absolute terms. It weighs just 680g complete with hood, compared with 1700g for the 100-400mm II or 1610g for the 100-500mm. That kilo of weight, 2.2 lb, makes a huge difference. The little lens on the R5 is so comfortable to hold and so balanced when shooting, especially with the control ring towards the front, it is much easier for shooting and hiking with.

In terms of IQ with my standard charts at 20m, the bare lens is pretty close to the 100-400mm II at 400mm. With the RF 1.4x, it's not as sharp as the 100-400mm II at 560mm or the 100-500mm at 500mm. It's not nearly as good at 800mm as the EF lens with the 2xTCs or even remotely in the same league as the 100-500mm at 1000mm. It does focus noticeably closer than does the RF 100-500mm. The lens is probably best used without teleconverters.

It's not as good as my RF 100-500mm, but I can stroll around with it dangling from my hand rather than being a heavy item on a shoulder strap. It will be perfect for my wife who finds the white zoom lenses too heavy. And, it's also pretty inconspicuous when when walking around urban areas. So, it's a keeper for me, being good enough for much of my casual photography, and so easy to carry around or pack. It has the same nominal resolution on the R5 as the RX10 IV fully extended (f/4 220mm, 2.7 crop factor, 20 Mpx sensor) which I have liked
for casual convenience. But, the Canon is much sharper.

Here are my first two shots: a Great Tit flying off me feeder towards me, and a Stubble Rosegill mushroom.

Leaked: Full review of the Sony A7 IV goes live prematurely

As happens all of the time, a review for an upcoming product has leaked out ahead of tomorrow’s official announcement of the Sony A7 IV.
Check out the review above.
Update: It looks like takedown orders from Tony & Chelsea are hitting YouTube and Vimeo, so I won’t be scouring for another one. I’m sure it’s an annoying bit of work for them. The camera will be announced tomorrow, so there will be many reviews of the A7 IV to watch then.

Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye VR Demo

A couple of weeks ago Canon Asia posted a VR demonstration of the brand-new Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Lens Fisheye on their YouTube Channel. I finally had the chance to view the video on my son’s Oculus, which he seems to always hide from me.
I think this lens is going to bring many new creators into the VR space.  I think this lens is going to make things easy for anyone to get into it.
If Canon’s VR software which will be subscription-based is well done, this lens is going to be a big seller.
I highly recommend you check out the above video with whatever VR viewing device you may have.
