After the EOS R3, Canon will introduce new “affordable” RF mount cameras [CR1]

The Canon EOS R3 is getting all of the talk right now, and for good reason. The new camera will become Canon’s flagship RF mount camera until we see an EOS R1 late next year at the earliest.
I have been told that after the Canon EOS R3 begins and whenever supply chain issues are corrected, Canon will focus on the lower end of the RF mount lineup.
A replacement for the Canon EOS RP is coming, this will obviously be the new entry-level camera for the RF lineup. Pricing for this camera will be aggressive.
The RF mount APS-C sensor equipped unicorn is also “in the pipeline”. It will sit above the EOS RP replacement in price and will be the smallest camera in the RF mount lineup.
Reading between the lines, it doesn’t appear that an APS-C RF mount camera will be the EOS 7D series replacement a lot...

Tokyo Olympics 2021 Media Rules and Restrictions

On June 8, AP wrote an article covering media rules for upcoming Tokyo Olympics, starting in July 2021. Here is an excerpt from that article, showing what all media must do to comply with the 2021 Olympic media restrictions. I feel for the upcoming Olympic photographers and reporters that will be covering this event, as they work to comply with these Olympic restrictions and safety precautions.

The government and the IOC ... keep saying they’re holding a safe Olympics,” Oshitani was quoted saying in the Times of London. “But everybody knows there is a risk. It’s 100% impossible to have an Olympics with zero risk.”

Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the organizing committee, warned that media entering Japan from abroad could be monitored by GPS to make sure they follow the rules that will be spelled out in the third edition of the so-called Playbooks due out later this month.

Muto said media would be tested twice before they left home, and for several days after they enter Japan. He said they would have to sign a “pledge” to follow the rules, and would be restricted from free movement for the first 14 days.

“If any violations are found, measures such as suspension or deprivation of accreditation and deportation proceedings will be strictly applied,” Muto said.

He said reporters’ phones could be tracked with GPS to see if rules had been broken.

“We can use the GPS and if they’re going to places outside the business destinations, that will become very apparent,” he said. “After 14 days they can engage in the normal media activity and coverage.”

Birding on high MP - ISO vs focal length

Just curious for those using either the RF 100-500 or EF 100-400 with 1.4 TC on a 45+ MP body

For very high shutter speed (ie fast moving birds) that will drive ISOs higher up, are the longer lenses with narrower aperture really any better than the 100-400 II @400mm 5.6 on a 45+ MP body? I would think with the loss of light between nearly a full stop to a full stop, the corresponding increase in ISO to compensate would not sufficiently improve detail when have a 45mp+ camera that is able to be heavily cropped.

In other words on high MP camera seems like cropping more @ 400mm f/5.6 might actually yield the same or more detail than 500-560mm at f/7.1-f/8 - at those high shutter speeds to fully stop action in flight. The extra noise from higher iso would reduce contrast and then detail when you have to more aggressively remove that noise in post.

Thoughts?

Canon has pulled firmware v1.3.2 for the EOS 5D Mark IV

Last week Canon released a minor firmware update for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Over the weekend, it looks like Canon pulled v.1.3.2 for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV due to an issue(s) reported by users.

Save those pennies! A Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM is coming up for auction

If you’ve been saving your money for some RF lenses that you can’t get your hands on due to the manufacturing issues around the world, that may turn out to be for the best.
Wetzlar Camera Auctions will have a Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM up for auction starting on October 9, 2021. How much will this lens fetch at auction? That’s tough to predict at the moment, but the EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM has sold a few times for more than $150,000 USD in the past.
The Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM was released in July of 1993 as a built-to-order lens and retailed for around $100,000 USD. The number of these lenses out there is unknown, but it has been hypothesized that there are less than 20 of these lenses in existence.
A Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM took about a year to build once it was ordered, as Canon could only manufacture about 2 of these a year because of the time required to form fluorite crystals.

Does anyone have issues with the R5 focusing to infinity and not on a close up subject using the RF 100-500 mm lens?

Dear Everyone,

This afternoon I was trying to take pictures of small birds and my R5 with the RF100-500 mm lens would in certain situation focus out to infinity and then it was very difficult for it to refocus on a small close up subject (e.g. a Chickadee). This did not occur with all background, but appeared to occur more frequently when the background had high contrast and the foreground had less contrast.

If anyone has found a solution to this occurrence please share and thank you in advance.

Cheers,

John

Patent: Canon shows off optical formulas for APS-C RF mount kit lenses

Canon News has uncovered a patent with various APS-C RF mount lenses. On the Canon Rumors RF mount lens roadmap, I have had an RF 18-45mm f/4-5.6 IS STM for quite some time. I’ve always thought this was a strange focal length for full-frame image sensors based on Canon’s history of kit lens focal lengths.
I have not heard anything about an APS-C image sensor equipped sensor for the RF mount in quite some time, but I still believe such a camera is part of Canon’s long-term plans.

Industry News: Fujifilm shuts down servers after a suspected cyber attack

Fujifilm may have been a victim of a cyberattack and they have decided to shut down their servers while they investigate. If you remember, Canon suffered a ransomware attack last year.
From Fujifilm:
FUJIFILM Corporation is currently carrying out an investigation into possible unauthorized access to its server from outside of the company. As part of this investigation, the network is partially shut down and disconnected from external correspondence.
We want to state what we understand as of now and the measures that the company has taken. In the late evening of June 1, 2021, we became aware of the possibility of a ransomware attack. As a result, we have taken measures to suspend all affected systems in coordination with our various global entities.
We are currently working to determine the extent and the scale of the issue. We...

R5 / R6 Rebates coming?

Hey everyone, I'm new here but not new to photography as a hobby.
I'm a long time Fuji user but as my kids grow up and pick up various sports I need something with better AF and am contemplating a switch to Canon R5 or R6 or Nikon Z7II.
Canon is my preference but as I never owned one I'm not familiar with Canon's rebates cadence. I know both R5 and R6 are still at their launch MSRPs. Do you think rebates are coming? Soon, this year? Before summer? What do you guys think?

Thanks,
P.

Portable Battery Power - Canon R w/ Grip

I use an Anker PowerCore Fusion 10,000 with a thick USBC to USBC to charge a Canon R with a grip. The Anker has pass through power so it will charge when its plugged into a wall outlet, if the power cuts or its unplugged it uses its 10,000 battery. Usually I pull the R battery tray in and out slightly and switch power on/off and it starts charging via the grip. It charges quickly.

There is another newer Anker that's similar, it's a 60w with 2x USBC, white, similar shape, which incidentally will handle a Surface Pro 7 supposedly, but I havent tried it yet, I'd like to though. Either way, the PowerCore Fusion 10,000 works. It's more pleasing than the bulky external power cord, or using the small square battery chargers, thus requiring the batteries to be removed from the grip. (Of course, I have to pull the grip batterys out anyway to prevent exceptional phantom drain when not in use.)

It may not have that much purpose in the field, but it could. I don't know if it will "power the camera", perhaps. It only seems to work with exceptionally thick USBC to USBC cables and I opt for very short ones I had already. For me it is better than the bulky charger with the cords and is not much larger than the small wall chargers but has a lot more utility. Hope that makes life easier. That's a TSE-45 on the Canon R with the adapter if anyone was curious. Great walkaround lense ;)

More features and specifications for the Canon EOS R3 have emerged

Canon has released new specifications for the Canon EOS R3, but has left many others undisclosed. The Canon EOS R3 will shoot RAW video, and by the looks of it, it will not shoot 8K.  In a normal Canon move, they have made the Canon EOS R3 compatible with the LP-E19 battery from the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS-1D X Mark III. Canon is also adding AF tracking for cars, motorcycles, and other motorsports.
Check out all of the new features and specifications below.
From Canon Australia:
Today we’re releasing new and exciting specs for the  Canon EOS R3, marking a new era for sports, wildlife, and news photographers.

New images and info regarding EOS R3 pops up on Canon USA website

Hey,

Minutes ago Canon USA released more information and photographs: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/...e/product-showcases/cameras-and-lenses/eos-r3

"Canon’s upcoming EOS R3 will feature a solid yet lightweight magnesium allow body and carry forward the integrated vertical grip similar to the 1D series cameras, emphasizing both horizontal and vertical handling for challenging shooting situations. Weather-resistance and durability will equal Canon’s top-of-the-line EOS-1D X Mark III camera. Power will be delivered by the same Canon LP-E19 battery pack that powers the EOS-1D X Mark III. And, the EOS R3 will have three primary input dials, giving familiar operation to current Canon EOS users."

"Able to autofocus in light as low as EV -7 or more2, along with up to 8 stops3 of Coordinated IS control when used with RF lenses featuring Optical Image Stabilization, the EOS R3 will deliver amazing performance even in remarkably dark areas."

"With the EOS R3, you will be able to shoot in high-quality 4K with Canon Log3 and oversampled 4K, and RAW movie internal recording. AF tracking for people, animals and motorsports will be possible while recording video as well."

"To assist with your professional or personal photo and video endeavors, the EOS R3 will have Wired LAN and 5GHz Wi-Fi4 (11ac equivalent) built-in so you have the flexibility of wired or wireless connections and the necessary support for high-speed image transfer."

"The EOS R3 will feature a multi controller to help you easily select the AF point, quickly change Menu settings, and more. And, the R3 will also be equipped with a smart controller—similar to that on the EOS-1D X Mark III —that lets you quickly shift AF point locations, or a starting point for Servo AF tracking. A Vari-angle LCD will make it easy to compose shots at virtually any angle, and will be touchscreen to enable you to access menus, change settings and more on the fly. And a new accessory shoe will provide options for data communication and power, supporting new accessories."

Strange purple artifacts on video with R5+ 24-70 RF

Hi everyone! I am 99% stills shooter, but was asked to film some video footage in a night club using my R5+ RF 24-70. I was shooting 4K IPB 25 frames per second, 1/50 shutter, used CLOG BT 709 ( now I know that there was absolutely no use to use CLOG in a nightclub, but with my severely limited video knowledge I thought that it was a good idea). In the club there were some purple lights... The result is awful... I have some clipped purple spillages on faces that kill the texture, some white fringing around them etc and absolutely NO idea why it happed so. Does anyone have an idea what ruined the footage?

I guess the example pics (print screens) and the video itself will be much more illustrative than any words

The unedited out of the camera peace of the video is attached via the link

Canon EF 600mm f/4 III with Canon extender 1,4 III?

How is the IQ of this combo? I'm trigger happy on a 1,4 III extender from Canon but had som really bad experience with the IQ of the EF 70-200 f/2.8 III with the x2 extender (version III) from Canon. The images were almost unusable, had to stop down to around f/8 on 200mm (400mm) to get decent sharpness.
I can't find any sample images of the 600mm III and the Canon x1,4 III combo.

Is there any degradation to the images, is it noticable? Really like to know before I buy the extender.

Canon Successfully Develops the World’s First 1-megapixel SPAD Sensor

Canon has once again announced the development of the world’s first 1-megapixel SPAD sensor. Back in June of 2020, Canon made a similar announcement.
From Canon Global
AR, VR, driverless vehicles, ultra-high frames-per-second shooting speeds, automated robots…the IT revolution has greatly expanded the limits of what’s possible. One of the key components that will change society as we know it is the “sensor,” a device that changes light into electronic signals. In June 2020, Canon announced that it had successfully developed the world’s first1 1-megapixel single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) image sensor, drawing attention from industry watchers all over the world.

SPAD sensors are a type of image sensor. The term “image sensor” probably brings to mind the CMOS sensors found in digital cameras, but SPAD sensors operate...
