Attaching Images has Changed

When you attach a image, you will see a thumbnail with the word "Insert" in the upper left corner. Click it and you have the option to show it as a thumbnail or full size.

It baffled me at first, so I thought I'd mention it to others. I usually select Full Image. Thumbnail is default if you do not select anything.

Be careful, its easy to click twice and get multiple images.

Patent: Canon RF mount Big White Lenses

Big white lenses for the RF mount are a logical next step for Canon, and I was expecting to see at least a couple of them announced ahead of the Tokyo games this year, but that appears to still be in a certain level of flux, so who knows at this point?
Outside of an RF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM, all of the optical formulas that appear in this USPTO patent uncovered by Northlight Images are also part of the rumoured RF lens roadmap that I published a while ago.
Another of the rumoured lenses on our roadmap is an RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM, but I haven’t seen any sort of patent reference for such an optical formula yet.

Industry News: Sony FX3 leaks ahead of an official announcement

Update: SonyAlphaRumors is now reporting that this new Sony camera will not shoot 8K and will top out at 4K 120P. Along with this correction, they are reporting that the FX3 will use CFExpress type A and will retail at €3795.

It looks like Sony is going after both Blackmagic Designs and Canon with their next cinema camera, the Sony FX3 (ILME-FX3). It appears to be an E-mount cinema camera with impressive known specs.
According to SonyAlphaRumors the camera will have the following capabilities, and much more.
“New 8K ILME VIDEO CAM! It Can Shoot UHD 8K, Oversampled DCI 4K, HFR UHD 4K.”
The exact announcement date is unknown at this time, but I’m sure the leaks will be flowing freely over the next little while...

Canon RF 24-105/4 dust inside. How to clean ?

Hi.

After 2 years of using I clearly see more dust in my RF 24-105/4.
Its not 1 or 2 specks of dust but 4-5 and 1 quite big. When I shooting on f16 i can see 2-3 transparent disks on image from this lens. On F8 they disappeared.

Question is: If I want clean this lens by removing front element and blow out dust from it, can I do it like on old 24-105 (i see many video on youtube how it can be disassembled) or new RF lens made in some different way ???

Will be appreciated for any of advices,
Thanks

Review: Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Dustin Abbot has completed his full review of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM, Canon’s most affordable RF lens. Sometimes dubbed the “nifty fifty” or “thrifty 50”, it usually finds its way into ever Canon shooters bag at some point in their photographic journey.
For the $199 USD price tag, you really are getting a lot of lens for your money. However, don’t confuse it with the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM, it’s definitely nowhere near as good optically or autofocus wise.
Even with some caveats, Dustin came away quite impressed by Canon’s newest little lens.
So, in conclusion, the Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM is not only worth buying because it is cheap, but also worth buying because it is competent.  No, it’s anywhere near the class of...

Industry News: SIGMA fp L camera body appears for certification

Nokishita has uncovered a Korean registration for a SIGMA fp L camera body. Not much is known specifications wise about the new camera, but it looks like this will be the mate to a recently registered EVF-11 from SIGMA.
The current SIGMA fp is claimed to be the smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera on the market, but at 25mp, it could use a higher resolution sibling.

1DX3 vs R5 Video

I go over some of the differences similarities and how they fit into my style of shooting. It is a bit too long, but I am giving away some stuff. I am giving away a Wacom tablet, the basic one, an Olympus Tough Camera and I decided to add a Canon 400 f5.6 at 1000 subs if I live that long.

A year ago I did not care a wit about video, and now I am really addicted to trying to learn. It is a steep curve. I blame the 1DX3 for the addiction. I thought I could grow the channel and get some stuff out in the hands of someone who can use it. Going forward there will not be many reviews. It will be mostly focused on wildlife video, and documenting a particular place I find interesting. I have a channel trailer that gives an overview. The link below is the 1dx / r5 video. Thanks for any views and if you are interested in any of the items sub and comment.

Updated: Scammed: The X-Tra battery campaign on Kickstarter

Back in November, I promoted a Kickstarter campaign for the X-Tra Performance battery, a very cool looking battery product for your Canon and other mirrorless cameras.
In the past, I’ve generally only ever promoted campaigns by companies that have had a track record of delivering on their promises, the likes Kurvd, Peak Design and Gura Gear have never really let anyone down, outside of minor delivery delays.
This time, however, it looks like we have all been taken, and I would like to apologize for not properly vetting the project because once I dug deeper after the fact, it became apparent that this project was likely a scam from the get-go.

When did I become suspicious?
I was signed up as an affiliate for the project, and I had spoken directly with the claimed CEO “Jeffrey”, and I was offered 20% of all sales driven to the project. Being the...

R5 - Shutter Randomly opening and closing while turned off

I have a brand new R5, this is the first bit of Canon gear I've ever used. I am waiting on lenses to arrive later today. So far I've just gone through the menus, but I haven't actually pressed the shutter yet.

The body is sitting on my desk, with the switch in the off position, and I hear the shutter opening and closing, completely unprovoked. It seems like the shutter remains open for 12 or so seconds.

Here is the vide of it happening:

Does anyone have any idea what this is about?

LENS CHAIN?

Weird one this, but thought I saw a picture one time of a guy with lens and collar and there was metal tie or chain from the collar back under the dslr screw mount underneath , so that in case the lens came off the mount, it would still be left dangling from under the camera. I went on to adorama and searched lens chain and lens wire etc, but can't find it, maybe there's a different term. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and can post link, I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Is cherry-picked "binning" fantasy or sometimes reality?

Funny this year how Amazon seems to more often have the newer stuff in stock--and I mean "Sold by Amazon." One example would be the Rf 100-500mm, consistently in stock for months now, while other stores have been showing backordered during the same time.

Have we ever had a thread about "binning"? Is it just voodoo superstition to wonder if the top merchants dedicated to photography, and having been loyal Canon authorized-dealers for decades, might get batches of lenses and bodies that perform slightly better in the QC tests coming off the assembly lines?

It is hard for me to completely shake the feeling that what our favorite big New York (and other!) camera shops sell is somehow cherry-picked. (And of course this is so easy to "confirm" with one or two anecdotes--but no solid statistical data. In other words, I get one sub-par item from the Big River, and I believe they are selling second-tier stuff. That ain't scientific at all!)

One comparison I have is computer monitors: There was a time when a strong belief existed online that Dell-direct sold better performing monitors than those sold at online retailers. Many customer-reviews and forum preachers were sure Dell cherry-picked what they sold directly, and backed up such claims with the fact that Dell was giving an extra year of warranty for their direct-sale monitors.

Or, has anybody else had the experience of researching flat-panel TV's and reading many places that certain production codes were associated with significantly better image-quality? One variation of this was a belief that early production runs used better displays, and then once a model had been well received and started selling well, a bit of bait and switch would take place, with a different display being used in the chassis, one that was close but slightly inferior. That kind of talk made me roll my eyes...

With Canon, I believe we know that their topline gear is made and assembled in Japan. I would not even imagine that the parts they use are ever anything lesser in quality to what was originally used in the first production runs. But I can imagine--and I do mean IMAGINE--that some copies of lenses test sharper than others. The best go to store A, B, and C, while the ones that are in-spec but not the best go to, well, behemoths. Again, this is PURE SPECULATION, just Sunday morning rumination to go with my coffee.

(RUMORS site, right?)

I'd imagine there is a range of readers here going from thinking such ideas about Canon/Nikon/Sony gear are just nuts to being pretty sure there is something to it.

Wafer lenses for phones...Could tech be used for ILC too?

Read this and wondered if someday such tech would be used in mirrorless lenses, maybe to make them smaller and lighter. Maybe to someday make, for example, a sharp, light 60-600mm f/4 that could actually fit in a mini-van console?

R5 Auto Focus accuracy under household fluorescent lighting.

Hi All,

Just curious to gauge some user experiences with shooting under fluorescent lighting with the R5 (or any mirrorless camera for that matter).

My experience:

On a recent fashion shoot the modelling light on my flash head blew out and I was in a very dark room. Luckily (or so I thought) directly beside where I was shooting were two lamps with fluorescent bulbs. I turned those on and used them to increase light level to make focusing ‘easier’.

Upon reviewing the images taken with my R5 and RF 50mm f1.2L lens, I found the auto focus accuracy wasn’t as good as I was used to. Normally I achieve 95%-100% accuracy with that lens easily. In this case, with the fluorescent lights on, it was probably 10-20% lower than that, with the majority being back focused. Sometimes 5 in a row backfocused.

The fluorescent lights were the only thing that was different on this shoot and the only time the AF accuracy had been a bit of an issue.

I have read some reports that DSLR phase detect AF systems sometimes don’t get along well with household fluorescent bulbs, but wasn’t sure about mirrorless?

The sensor readout speed of the R5 is 1/60 correct? I would assume the AF calculation would be done just as fast if not slightly faster than that? Could the 60hz flicker of fluorescent bulbs be interacting with the R5 in a negative way when it comes to AF?

Has anyone else here shot under similar conditions? How were your results with the AF performance?

Thanks!

Screen brightness goes up momentarily when half-pressing (Live View)

When I half-press on my R6, especially when the AF point is on a darker spot, sometimes the screen momentarily gets brighter before going back to the correct exposure.

It's difficult to search on Google for this, but I think it's related to how Live View mode works on cameras (vs. DSLRs). I found this regarding the EOS 7D, which might be related:

If you point the camera in a different direction, it might throw off the Live View image's correct brightness momentarily. Wait until the brightness level stabilizes before shooting.

It's not related to Exposure Simulation, since it happens even while turned off.

My guess is that the AF system sometimes need to increase the exposure in order to obtain focus, similar to the AF-assist beam. But I am curious to know what exactly is going on and why it only seem to happen in Manual mode.

Canon 24-105 F4L Err-01 Question

Just curious of any opinions on this.
About a year ago my Canon 24-105mm starting actiing up.
Then it seemed to be consistently coming up with the Err-01 and saying clean the contacts.
Of course I did clean the contacts but it made not difference.
Looking it up it seems to be a relatively common issue generally to do with the ribbon cable.
It doesn't seem to be practical to get it repaired, seems to be relatively expensive.
I went back looking at it recently and youtube videos of people repairing it.
People were blocking contacts to make it work sort of manually.
I started messing with different apertures and its erractically working.
Say if its on F4 and doesn't work if I switch off and back on and go to F16 it will at least work for a while.
So I'm wondering if its the aperture blades have an issue or whether the ribbon would also cause that problem.
It was a very handy lens, sad to see it broken but not sure if its worth investing in its repair.

Which portrait vintage lens?

Hi everybody,

I got a R6 with a Canon EF 24mm 1.4, RF 35mm 1.8, RF 50mm 1.2, RF 70-200mm 2.8...So you see what’s missing is a 85mm. I used to have a Canon 85mm 1.4 IS on my R but wasn’t really happy with it, it was good but had a lot of CAs and basically was just boring, it was clinical, I bought it mostly for the IS when filming with the original R and sold it when buying the R6.

The obvious choice would be the RF 85mm 1.2 but I don’t want to spend that kind of money at the moment and I really got into vintage lenses lately especially since having these mirrorless bodies. I bought a few old Zeiss, Helios, Pentax 50s and 135s for 30-80€ and I am so happy with them. They have so much character and it is really fun using them. As I will also only use the 85mm for hobby shoots with family and friends why not get a vintage lens here too. The thing is, the good ones are not 30-80€ but 150-600€. An investment I am willing to make but I do want some info beforehand. However there isn’t much info about it on the net and definitely no comparisons between the 3-4 lenses I am considering. So hopefully any of you have used one or two of them.

These are the lenses I am considering:

- Leica Summicron 90mm 2.0 (R or M)
- Zeiss Planar 85mm 1.4 (Contax)
- Zenit Helios 40-2 85mm 1.4 (New)
- Meyer Görlitz Somnium 85mm 1.4 (Somehow a Zenit 40-2 copy)

I was also considering the famous Jupiter 9 which is half the price but I don’t think it’s optically in the same league as the ones above.

my budget is 500€ max.

Thank you!
Dennis

The Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II is the top choice for documentary filmmakers at Sundance 2021

The Sundance Film Festival wrapped this past week, the largest independent film festival in the United States. Beyond the films, I also find it interesting which cameras are used to make the films in the festival. The choice cameras tend to differ a lot between documentary filmmakers and narrative filmmakers.
This year, the Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II was the runaway choice for documentary filmmakers, it was used in 8 of the 18 documentaries shown at Sundance.

YM Cinema dug deeper into each film to come up with the above charts showing all of the primary cameras used for each film at...

Can't access CR site from a Firefox browser where I'm not already logged in

Hi Craig / CR

In a couple of days I have been unable to access https://www.canonrumors.com/ from a Firefox browser were I'm not already logged in. I cannot get past the cookie dialog. Nothing happens when clicking the "Disagree" or "Agree" buttons, and clicking "More Options" just brings me to another dead-end dialog.

Below is screenshot including messages in browser console. All messages appear at loading. No further messages or errors occurs when clicking buttons:

1612545248085.png

Some of the messages are expected, because Firefox's "Enhanced Tracking Protection" (set to "Standard" mode) probably blocks some of things attempted loaded.

Screenshot is from Firefox 86 Developer Edition. But I have the same problem at work in a standard Firefox 85. Restarting browsers in "safe mode" with all extensions disabled doesn't fix problem.

I can still access CR from my home Firefox 85 where I'm already logged in and probably have answered the cookies dialog a while ago.

90D or 850D/Rebel T8i upgrade and lens resolving power?

Hey everyone, I'm planning to eventually upgrade from the 700D/Rebel T5i to the 90D or 850D when the price drops a bit. I'm keen to get the 90D since it may be the last mid-range crop DSLR from Canon.
My only concern about the 90D is the 32.3 MP Sensor, I've read comments from people saying that older lenses don't have the resolving power for it and it makes the images blurred compared to a lower MP camera like the 850D? Is this true, and has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have any examples of this?

What year did they start making high enough resolving power lenses for the high MP sensors?

Some older lenses I have are the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro, Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L USM, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS.

If the 850D has better IQ with these lenses I'll just go with that.

Thanks for anyone's help :)
