RF with Older EF Lenses

Been looking around for some information and only getting bits and pieces........

I looked at numerous forums (like FM) and saw a video using an R5 with EF 400 f/2.8 and adapter and it looks very promising. I am contemplating replacing some EF glass in time. Were I to use an EF 300 f/2.8 II with an EF-RF adapter and possibly stack an EF 1.4x or 2.0X in that setup, does anyone have a feel for the autofocus/maximum frame rate/battery life with that kind of setup? I know I'll likely lose some focus points. According to Canon, this lens is very capable of some pretty good FPS on an R5 but nobody is talking about how the battery holds up "pushing" that kind of focusing hardware in a birding type of scenario.

All in all, this is an amazing camera for stills but I am thinking about the future using existing lenses versus replacements (which would be a significant stretch on my budget ).

Thanks in advance

R6 locks up at first, won't show images, 'burps' before shooting normal again.

Hoping it's as simple as the card I'm using but since it does resolve itself as time goes by, maybe not.
The first images I take with a brand new R6 won't show- a screen pops up saying can't play that still image, then it 'burps' before shooting normally. It's happened a few times and after shooting for a while it seems to be fine but this is a BRAND NEW camera- and I've owned Canon digitals for some 18 years, never had this before. Any ideas? Using Lexar Pro SDXC V60 II V3 cards rated at 250mb/s, 1667x.

Are you looking for fast autofocus prime lenses for your EOS M camera? Viltrox may have what you want

Third-party lens maker Viltrox has recently added three new fast prime lenses with autofocus for the EF-M mount/EOS M cameras, and they’re affordable.. While Canon doesn’t appear to be interested in making such lenses for EOS M, we may have to rely on third-party manufacturers going forward.
You can buy Viltrox EF-M lenses directly on Amazon.

Viltrox EF-M 23mm f/1.4 $299 (approx. 35mm equivalent)
Viltrox EF-M 33mm f/1.4 $259 (approx. 50mm equivalent)
Viltrox EF-M 56mm f/1.4 $279 (approx. 90mm equivalent)

You can learn more about Viltrox lenses at their official web site.

Why no "maximum depth of field program" ?

I still wonder, why Canon hasn't taken the chance to provide the EOS R5 with an AUTOMATIC maximum DOF program.
It would be a huge help for landscapers, if you could automatically obtain maximum DOF to infinity, for preselected apertures. All new AF lenses lack a usable DOF scale...
With, for instance rangefinder lenses, Leica, Zeiss or even Canon Nikon manual (No AF) lenses, it was easy, especially for wide angles.
I'm convinced, this would be a welcome feature for many stills photographers.

Tips for Video on R5 for a novice?

got my small rig cage today and while I'm mainly a stills person, I'd like to learn a bit of videography for friend's bands (once covid lifts).

searched a bit, didn't see much other than someone asking about LUTs for video.

I briefly tried some 4k 30 and it stuttered a lot on my PC. I'm puzzled, while my PC is older, its nothing to sneeze at.. it was built a few years ago with gaming in mind and it has kept up... and I have modern o/s and drivers..

a quick process through Shotcut and export made it run smoother, but holy cow.. video is a new beast to me and the R5 has a nutty amount of options compared to my 80D.

I have tried watching videographers comments here and there and its well.. confusing to put it mildly. Any suggestions for a novice to shoot 4k.. and get decent results? frame rate, log?, ipb vs ALL-I? is shotcut ok to use? is it too limited?

pretty much a novice here so anything appreciated.

Extension grip with built-in GPS and its own battery for R5. Wouldn't that be nice?

I only do photography while traveling abroad and hiking in remote places, so geotagging pictures is really important.

Among the things that keep me from switching from a 5D to a R5 are:
- I prefer the bigger body; the handling and grip of bigger bodies is preferable and I know I'm not the only one who handles better a DSLR than smaller mirrorless cameras
- The R5 lacks a GPS; I understand that it would be a hit to the battery though

So what if Canon could release an extension grip the size of the EG-E1 for the Canon RP that houses both a GPS unit and its dedicated battery.

That would both add extra size and GPS, without battery issue.

What do you guys think of it?

Industry News: Uh Oh, Leica announces a camera that I have asked for, the Leica Q2 Monochrom

So, Leica has gone out and made a camera I have been asking for, for quite some time. A monochrome version of the Leica Q2. It’s a super niche product, but I imagine it’s going to be quite the tool to use in practice.

Review: Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM by TDP

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his exhaustive review of the brand new Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM. Canon’s latest “affordable” fast prime.
As we’ve read and seen from other reviewers, this lens appears to be a big winner, especially once the price is considered. A lot of photographers will end up with this lens in their kit.
From TDP
The compact size and light weight make this lens comfortable to carry and use for long time periods. Image stabilization means the tripod can often be left behind, which also decreases the overall carry weight and setup time. While the RF 85mm f/2 IS STM does not get professional build quality or the ultimate image quality, it performs well with accurate AF performance ensuring this lens’s sharp image quality is fully realized, even with the very...

EOS R6 (and R5?) Focus Bracketing--0.5 sec minimum shutter speed?

I've tried Focus Bracketing on the R6 and like the results. But on mine, shutter speed won't go lower than 0.5 seconds. To get the exposure I wanted in a window lit scene, for instance, I had to raise the ISO to 200 or go wider than the recommended max aperture of f/5.6. No matter how much I spin the dial, shutter speed hits the floor at 0.5 seconds.

I've read the manual and searched the web. TDP has a walkthrough, and, in fact Bryan mentions that he got best results for one set at 0.5 sec for shutter speed. But I'm not seeing that he mentions the limitation.

Anybody else getting longer shutter speeds for Focus Bracketing? Thanks!

EOS R this holiday season? Is it worth it vs an R6?

The EOS R is two years old now, and with the release of the R5/R6, its price should start coming down again for the holiday season. The lowest I ever remember seeing it for was around $1100 Refurb, which coming from Canon, is basically like new condition, and $1400 new. It seems likely we'll see pricing like this in the next couple of months, making it an attractive option for many. My question is for those of you who own or have owned an EOS R, and have gotten your hands on an R6.

How does the user experience compare between the R and R6?

How would you compare AF/Eye AF performance? I think its safe to say R firmware is final at this point, with only lens/security updates.

How do the two sensors compare on DR and low light performance?

Digital stab on EOS R video looked pretty good. Is the R6 IBIS really that much smoother?

Any other points of comparison or differentiation you feel are important?

R6 + IBIS + EF lenses

Hi,

I have been using Canon EOS cameras and EF lenses since 2001. Over the last 19 years I have acquired several lenses. Now I am planning to move to Canon EOS R cameras. I have to plan my pathway carefully. In Brazil we do not have large camera stores as B&H where we can try different cameras and lenses and rental companys do not have large inventories. Selling all my EF lenses to buy RF lenses would cause huge losses because the US Dollar to Brazilian Real exchange rate is currently unfavorable to Brazilians, so I am turning to you in order to hear your comments on the performance of my lenses on RF cameras.

I would like to hear the opinions of photographers who have used the lenses listed bellow with the R6. I am specially interested in image quality and IBIS function reports.

Canon EF 28mm f/1.8
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 I
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II
Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II

Thanks in advance,
Antonio

EF RF Adapters - can't find - need recommendations

been patiently waiting for EF-RF adapters, keep checking about 8 camera sites and it never seems to be in stock (ironically they were giving them away about a year ago).

saw it appear on Canon Canada but their site for some reason keeps borking on me and I can't seem to place an order. Horribly done site.

Anyone have suggestions where to get some or 3rd party ones that are decent? I love my R5 + RF24-70 2.8IS.. but I REALLY want to use my other lenses..

What is it with M43 folks?

I was at a photographic society meet once (something I will never bother with again), the speaker mentioned Full Frame and APS-C in some context. Of a few hundred people, a guy in the back shouted "M43" is smaller and better. Ever present DPR seems littered with people dedicated to reminding the world that this smaller format exists.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm not bashing M43, but now Canon has answered the call with such lenses as the new can sized 70-200 F4L, the F11 duo and the impossibly compact R5 itself; these folks must feel all the more evangelical.

Battery Powered LED Lights for Still Photography?

I'm asking for feedback from people who've used LED lights for photography. I'm trying to figure out if it's practical to do a model shoot with LED lights rather than strobes? What I'd like to know is how many watts of LED light does it take to shoot at ISO 100, 1/60th+, and f5.6 or f8?

My envisioned setup would be two main lights to illuminate the subject. I see 80-watt lights for $150 but is that enough light to get decent shots? My end result would be two lights + 2 battery packs such that I could do this without requiring power. I don't know if this is practical or not? A 200-watt battery pack would last about 1.5 hours at 100% power and is about $100/ea. A 300-watt unit is $250.

Currently, I'm using Godox/FlashPoint AD360ii 360-watt-second flashes with Godox softboxes and that's working fine and I probably should just stop right there but trying LEDs is interesting and I'm a sucker for bright shiny objects.

Anyway for the first step just trying to get an idea of how much light you need from an LED light to be usable? I don't like to shoot wide open and prefer f8 if possible. Wide-open is nice for portraits but the added DOF is better for model work IMHO.
