Patent: Canon RF 80mm f/2.8 Macro

A dedicated macro lens for the RF mount is definitely needed and is obviously on the roadmap. Here we have an optical formula for an RF 80mm f/2.8 1:1 macro lens.
I doubt we’ll see an 80mm macro, but there will be multiple different macro optical formulas until we see a consumer product.

What replaces the Rebel line?

With the RP now at $799 it appears that it will be difficult for Canon to get a new mirrorless system inexpensive enough to replace the Rebel lineup as an entry level camera. The new 50mm is a good kit lens but there doesn't appear to be a replacement for the 18-55 sold with so many crop frame bodies. Don't know how much of Canon's revenue stream is entry level Rebels (T6, T7, "i" versions or even the 90D at the high end) but I don't see the M series as a contender to replace these.

Patent: Canon RF 50mm f/1.4 USM and other primes

A new Canon Japan patent shows the optical formulas for various RF 50mm f/1.4 designs as well as an RF 35mm f/1.4. This patent deals with increasing focusing speed when using lens designs with large diameter elements.
I don’t think any of these optical formulas will become products, so the dream of a new 50mm f/1.4 from Canon probably won’t be coming true any time soon.

Tokina adds to their Cinema Vista lineup with the 40mm T1.5

Los Angeles, California, November 4, 2020 – Tokina has today expanded its range of class-leading superfast aperture cinema prime lenses with the introduction of the new Tokina Cinema Vista 40mm T1.5. The much-requested 40mm focal length is considered by many to be the perfect ‘normal’ lens to portray a natural field of view on a large format cinema camera – and joins the existing seven-strong set of 18mm T1.5, 25mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5, 85mm T1.5, 105mm T1.5, and 135mm T1.5 high resolution (8K+) Vista prime lenses. The mid-wide image created by the Vista 40mm T1.5 does not distract the viewer and offers a unique perspective when compared to the staple 35mm and 50mm focal length lenses.
The Tokina Cinema Vista lens lineup of 135mm T1.5, 105mm T1.5, 85mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5, 40mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 25mm T1.5...

Compatible EF Lenses w/ C70

I am ready to buy this and have one on preorder. Thing is...I will be attaching a 300mm f/2.8 and 600mm f/4.0. Based on the information Canon released (below) I wonder what will happen when I attach one of those (via the 0.71x). Note in Statement II they ID compatible lenses, but then add that all EF lenses are compatible. What happens if you attach a "non optimum performance or non compatible" lens? If anyone can made sense of this, please advise.

Statement I:
The EF 24-70 2.8 II, 24-105 4.0 II, and 16-35 2.8 III are supported for lens correction with optimum performance." Not sure what that means for the remaining Canon EF lenses.

Statement II:
As of September 25, 2020, the following lenses are compatible: the EF16-35mm f/2.8L III USM (released in October 2016), the EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), the EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM (released in November 2016). Canon plans to gradually expand the list of compatible lenses by providing free-of-charge firmware updates. EF lenses are still compatible with the camera, but Canon recommends that firmware updates be installed in order to effectively utilize functions which link the camera and lens.

EF vs RF 50 1.8 STM MTF chart comparison

According to Canon, the RF 50 1.8 is significantly softer than the EF 50 1.8 and RF 35 1.8.

EF vs RF (RF mirrored for comparison):

35 1.8 below:

Admittedly the EF 50's chart seems incredibly optimistic, but if we compare it to the 35 it's basically softer across the entire frame. I will wait for reviews and more sample shots (there are some pretty limited ones here) but the more I see about this lens the less optimistic I am. May still replace my Sigma 50 EX but I've been mulling getting the Samyang 50 XP and I think this just pushed me over since I'm not in the RF 50 1.2's tax bracket. Also still holding out hope for the Samyang 45 1.8 to get ported over but w/e. Thought this would be useful to you guys

Canon RF 70-200 dust inside

Hi, I’ve received my Canon R5 with the RF 70-200 f2.8 L IS. I think they are both great, but the thing is that the 70-200 came with a speck of dust attached to the front element (inside the lens of course, very noticeable). There is no sign of it in any photo at any aperture. What should I do? A part of me is saying: Enjoy and do take some pictures! The other part says return it!

I live in Argentina, so send the lens back is possible but a pain (big one).

Thoughts?
Thank you all
Agustín

Review of R5 by Optyczne

I am one of the few who follow this site, the Polish mother site of Lenstip - the auto-translation from Polish by Chrome browser is great. They measure things, and I like measurements from reliable people, and the Lenstip/Optycne crew like Opticallimits are reliable. In a nutshell, they rate the rate the camera overall ahead of the Z7 and A7RIV, which is not a big deal. But, there are some nice measurements of resolution and AF as well as other parameters. The resolution of the sensor is really very good for one that has an AA-filter, bearing out Canon's claims as to the effectiveness of their new system, first implemented in the 1DXIII, of splitting the light into 16 rather than 4 displaced beams. The resolution is pretty close to that of the Z7 (and D850). The filter is asymmetric, which I think I can just detect on my charts. The consistency of the AF is astounding, which we users know already, but is nice to see it being better than Sony. The combined IBIS and IS doesn't add up to 8 stops. The IBIS gave 3.5 ev of stabilization in a non-IS lens but the combined in the RF 24-105, only 4.5 ev. I think this small extra effect is similar for other manufacturers.

Correction: I have corrected the pricing of the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM from a previous typo.

Sony FF mirrorless market share collapse in Japan reaching milestone, Canon takeover imminent

If these numbers are accurate, the trajectory for Sony FF mirrorless market share and Canon's will cross each other within the next month or two, placing Canon as the top FF mirrorless maker in the home market and relegating the once dominant Sony to 2nd place. If this sounds familiar, it is because the overall market share of ILC's including mirrorless and DSLR's are in this order, with Canon at a dominating 45% of overall worldwide share for all of 2019, and Sony at a distant 20% second place.

What is remarkable about Sony's home market share collapse is the speed in which this happened. As recently as June 2018 Sony had a 100% share, and with the entrance of Canon and Nikon, started a steep decline followed by a slow recovery, and now another noticeable decline triggered by the Canon R5/R6 entrance. This has culminated in a new all-time low of 43.9% Sony share, a staggering 56% loss in just over 2 years, and continuing. This precipitous drop in Sony share is in sharp contrast to the pro-Sony headlines that gives an impression of the opposite happening - that Sony is the one dominating. "Sony conquers Canon", "Sony dominates mirrorless markets, and the competition is a long way behind", "Sony overtakes Canon", etc. While market share undulation is normal month-to-month, making headlines based on these undulations in Sony's favor is not only insignificant, it is misleading.

The wide-angle market view shows a more accurate picture of trends and the real deal, so to speak. With the annual aggregate sales of 2019 showing that Canon actually gained more market share (+2.4%) despite its dominant position than its nearest rival Sony (+0.9%), combined with this imminent Canon takeover of the home FF mirrorless market, it is more accurate to worry about the competition's health in keeping Canon vigilant and hungry. It will be interesting to see if Sony can slow down or reverse this trend in the coming months, as pro-Sony aspirations look increasingly obscure and irrelevant.

Review: Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM recently began shipping to much fanfare. This brand new short telephoto is going to find its way into many camera bags as quickly as Canon can build them. The lens is very affordable at $599 USD.
Gordan Laing from CameraLabs has completed his full review of the RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM. You can watch the video above, or hit the article link after the break.

Gordon’s summary:
……Throw in optical stabilisation that benefits bodies with or without IBIS and you have a very compelling lens for the money. The biggest issue is the wealth of alternative 85s to choose from, including a bunch from Canon, but the RF 85mm f2 represents a step-up in overall quality, close focusing and potential burst speed over the old EF 85 1.8 and is a lot more affordable than the faster 85s in Canon’s range. If you’re desperate for an 85 1.4 at a more affordable price, look to...
