My 70D is gone and I'm happy about it!

I've been mentoring a teen aged boy for several months. He lacked any direction or guidance at home and his older brother has had several run ins with the law.

I met him walking around the apartment complex back in September. He has a broken down T5 that he'd bought from somebody for a song. The camera didn't focus at all.

I asked him to come on a few back country shoots with me. I always let him use any of my lenses and my 70D. He loved that camera. He's really enthusiastic and has some talent.

He moved from Mesquite to Caliente, Nevada back in December so our working together ended. We did keep in touch and he asked me right before he moved whether or not I would sell the 70D. I told him I would sell him the camera and the stm kit lens for $600 if he got a job, saved his money, and bought it himself.

Today I got an excited call from him telling me he had saved the money for the camera. I drove 3 hours to Caliente and delivered his bought and paid for camera. You should have seen the pride in his face, knowing he'd worked to get the camera himself. I felt like a dad giving his son his first car. It was great.

So, tonight I remove those two things from my signature and do it with a happy heart.

Josh is now working and saving to buy my 400mm f/5.6L. I'll do just fine putting the extender on my 70-200mm. He needs that 400mm more than I do.

I wish I had some older generation lenses to give him to help him on his way more, but I don't.

He's working, back in school, and has a hobby that he says gives him something to do besides hang out with his brother and other wayward young men. He's happy about that. I am too.

16-35 f/4L IS or Zeiss T* 18mm f/3.5

Recently, I invested in the Lee 100mm filter system and I'd like to go wider with these grads than what I currently can do. I have the Zeiss15, which is incompatible with 100mm filters. Bigger filters are not an option for me, I want to stick to 100mm only. The next lens is my Zeiss21 which I love!

There's reviews which say that the quality difference between Zeiss18 and Zeiss21 is neglectable and some say that the Zeiss21 is visibly better than the Zeiss18.

From what I've found (limited information) my conclusion is that the difference between Zeiss18 and Canon 16-35 f/4L IS is very small. However, my experience with zeiss lenses is that colors "pop" more and images have more microcontrast. There is a noticable difference between Zeiss 100MP and Canon 100L IS macro for example. I have both the Otus85 and the Canon 85 1.2, and the 85 1.2 is blown away completely by the Otus...

I find it hard to believe that a relatively inexpensive (compared te Zeiss) Canon *zoom*lens is better or equal than the Zeiss 18 ::)

So, what is your experience and/or advice?

Get 5DSR now vs. wait for 5D4 for landscape work

Hi

I am looking to update my 5D3 for landscape work in the next little while, and my debate has been 5DSR vs. waiting for the 5D4. With the 5d4 likely announced pretty soon, it would appear to be a no-brainer to wait, but doing that realistically means shooting with the 5d3 for quite a while before you could actually have a 5d4 in hand.

I really would like some more resolution, but I also could use any DR improvements as well for high contrast scenes. I guess a Canon D810 is what I hope for.

Anybody who has been currently using the 5DSR have any thoughts on this? My biggest prints are usually 24 x 36.

I am really trying to be patient, while trying to decide if any DR improvement will be worth the trade off of less resolution, or vice versa.

With the 80d looking like it has 24mp, improved DR and likely on-chip ADC, what do people think this means for the 5d4 in terms of DR and resolution?

I also remember reading here about a likely quick upgrade to the 5DSR, which I take as meaning a new higher-DR sensor. Wonder what the time frame on that is.

I think we really don't lose with any of these, but I hope we hear pretty soon.

Canon 5DsR and panorama photography

Lately I started reading about the Canon 5DsR. Specifically for the use of landscape photography.
I wonder about the effect of a mutltiple shot panorama in post-processing with Lightroom. For example a 8 or 16 shot panorama. The combination of those large files worries me with post processing.
Does anyone have experience with this kind of post processing in lightroom and is able to share how LR handles it?


My experience with a multiple shot panorama using a 5DIII and - for example - spotremoval (sensor dust) in LR is not so good. It is slow, sometimes LR is 'not responding' or looses focus and goes into 'background'.
(The configuration of my PC is an AMD FX-9590 Black Edition 8-core 4.7 GHz processor, 16 GB DDR3 1600Mhz memory, MSI R9 270X 2GB graphical card and a couple of WD Black Sata 6 Gb/s 7200rpm)
I know I may be able to speed up by using SSD harddrive but doubt that will solve the issue.


I do consider the 5DsR.

It was a lovely day in June last year. Time for a trip to the airport. Then, a thunderstorm was forming, turning the evening sky to a real spectacle full of colours. It was a perfect time to test my new 7D II and - what can I say else? - i was not disappointed.

How much weight can the EF lens mount handle?

I am about to purchase a CCD camera for my astrophotography. My hope is to still use the Canon EF 600mm f/4 L II lens, however the CCD camera is going to be a good deal heavier than a standard DSLR. My 5D III is about 2lb, the 1D X II is about 3.4lb.

Now the CCD camera itself is 3.5lb, however some additional accessories will be attached to it, including a filter wheel (with a bunch of filters) and an off-axis guider port. With those additional accessories, the weight could top 7lb.

Does anyone know how much weight the EF mount is rated to handle? Lens side? The 600mm lens is a very solidly built lens...however I need to make sure I don't rip the mount off the lens with this camera.

Revisiting Dust Issues: ef 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II

About a year ago, there was a lensrentals article, I believe, posted in CR about dust in version II of the 100-400mm. I have been unable to find that article again, but lately, I've been getting a lot of dust on my sensor while or after using the lens.

I will say this is pollen season, and I generally make one or two lens changes in the field--but I'm quick and careful to reduce exposure to wind.

So, after some time in wide use, any others experiencing dust issues? I mean more than other lenses, not necessarily compared to version I, which I never owned.

And can anybody help find that article about how the new lens is not much better in terms of keeping dust out?

Sony Exploring a Split of Imaging Product Division

<strong>Tokyo, Japan</strong> – Sony Corporation (“Sony” or the Company”) has been engaged in the sequential splitting out of business units across the Sony Group, in order to reinforce the competitiveness of each business, and ensure clearly attributable accountability and responsibility.</p>
<p>In addition to Game & Network Services, Mobile Communications, Pictures, Music and certain other Sony Group businesses that were already operating autonomously as subsidiaries, in July 2014 Sony split out its TV business, followed by its Video & Sound business in October 2015. The Company also plans to split out and establish its semiconductor business as a wholly owned subsidiary in April 2016. Sony is also exploring the split out of its Imaging Products and Solutions Sector.</p>
<p>Concurrently, Sony has also been proceeding to realign the platform functions that support each of its business units in order to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of these operations.

EOS 80D first impressions

Got my 80D on Thursday

Sometimes I wonder why I read reviews on Dpreview and other pages wben they miss kr skip the things essential to me.

I had sold my 60 a while ago,holding out with my 5D3. So the question was giving in on the 80 after skipping the 70 or wait for the 90...

Went into an expensive Pro Store to buy an Interval Timer. Made a joke that they finally had recieved an 80D Poster for their wall when they told me they have the camera as well.

Tried it for 5 Minutes than handed over the cash.

Ok.. The 80D

Feels very, very plastic. When gripping it my fingernails made a sound like drumming on a blister package.
Coming from the 5D3 it was a DejaVu like changing from the 30D to the 60D: No joystick, this excuse of a control wheel and no magnesium to touch nowhere.

Well so you feel you spen 1300 for a Rebel until...
You look through the viewer and fall in love.
Afterwards you go through the setup and the love deepens.
It is no more the 5D menu but better. All the things on the 5D which might make sense for Some Pro but never for me are now sorted proper. And there is a lot of power behind the button.
So switch on anti flicker, reduce focus options to three, switch on level view. Switch on grid but leave focus highlighting on standard.
Now look again through the viewer and as long as you are not in to buy a 1DX2 this is the best Canon you held so far.

The picture quality is awesome. All my 5D can offer except the shallow dept of field is there, all I want from a crop camera except build in GPS as well.

The viewer overlay is brilliant. If the 5D with its dark AF display or its strange later fixes frustrated you.. Canon has learned. If you are in need of an electronic level...This time it is displayed in a usefull way.

Seldom used functions? This time you find them fast and where you expect
Them to be.

Few 1DXII samples

Mostly at higher ISO, converted with DPP4.4.20.0, no noise reduction, no sharpening. ISO25600 looks truly amazing to me! EXIF is preserved.

UPDATE: After playing little bit more with the files, I've added files with color NR applied (filename starts with NR). I wouldn't hesitate to use ISO25600 with this camera!

1DX mark II pushed 6EV - comparison to other cameras

I had an opportunity to briefly play with preproduction 1DX mark II and get some RAW images with me home...

So, here is it! The most anticipated photo taken with the 1DX mark II - THE REAR CAP PHOTO at ISO100! :o

Anyway on slightly more serious note, I compared it to my little collection of rear cap photos, namely 1D mark III, 1D mark IV, 1Ds mark III, 1DX and Sony A7.

First the good news, 1DXII is best Canon camera I've tested till this time, in this demanding discipline, hurray!

Well, time for the bad news, it's still worse than Sony A7 < ISO400...

My observations:
- 1DXII is finally able to beat my long time Canon ISO100 favorite, the 1D mark III from 2007
- It's interesting to examine the "full" images, which when resized, nicely shows the different noise patterns
- at ISO100, A7 noise is lower than 1DXII, but Canon noise is slightly "finer" in my eyes
- in "full" images is interesting to look at current leaks (I hope it's the right designation). 1DsIII starts at ISO200, 1DIII and A7 starts at ISO400, 1DIV at ISO800 and 1DX shows some at ISO3200
- 1DXII shows absolutely NO PATTERN at any ISO
- at ISO3200 1DX looks cleaner at 100%, but 1DXII is free of the pattern...after seeing this, I really regret, that I didn't take the images at higher ISOs too with 1DXII

Some technical points:
- I've used CaptureOne 9.1, which unfortunately doesn't support 1DXII, so I've converted the files with Adobe DNG converter and opened them in C1.
- as you can see from screenshots, exposure was pushed 4 stops and shadows to 100%, this roughly equals 6EV push
- noise reduction and sharpening was set to 0
- 1DsIII ISO400 file is missing
- 1DsIII highest native ISO is 1600, this settings was used in ISO3200 comparison

Please keep in mind, those are images from preproductin 1DXII, the performance can change, but I don't expect this happen... And secondly, this is very narrow test of many aspects of camera and sensor performance, so please don't judge entire camera according this one very specific and in real live not so important discipline!

Hard resetting 7D fixed loads of issues

Just created this topic with the intention that, this information could help somebody with similar problem.
I own 7D for more than 4 years now. In the first year, once in a while it used to hang - need to remove the battery and re-insert. After the 7D FW update, the problem was more prominent. I showed to Canon TS and they said it has motherboard problem and it needs replacement. The cost of replacement was 500$+. So instead of replacing I decided to stay with the problem and started drooling over 7D2 5DMKIII. After some more time, the live view was unusable - as soon as I start live view, the camera just hangs. If not in LV, buttons just wont work. Some more time passed with these hassles and the files started corrupting recently. I seriously started looking at 7DMK II, 5DMK III or 6D. From last couple of weeks, every raw file was corrupted. So thought its time to move on.
It just came to my mind that I never tried factory reset of 7D and searched google. Few folks have reported that to fix autofocus issues. So I tried that - removed CR1313 battery, re-inserted, cleared all custom settings and to my surprise, 7D is back in life just like when I originally bought. None of the problems I had faced for years were seen. So 7DII, 5Ds or 6D are out of question. Will stay with 7D till it gives up.

In summary:
Fixed hanging issue
Fixed Live view issue
Fixed file IO issue
Fixed file corruption issue.

Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8 mkiii & The Blue Goo

Hi everybody :)

I have a strong suspicion that a 3rd generation 16-35mm f/2.8 will be announced soon and I believe certain aspects of it's design may be similar to the current iteration. Here's some of my guesses:

• f/2.8 - f/22
• 9 aperture blades
• MFD 25-30cm
• Length 110-115mm
• filter size 82mm
• Image Stabilization - No
• 650g - 750g
• $1600-$1800

Although the mechanics are going to be rather similar, I imagine the image quality will be vastly superior to that of the current version and I dare wonder if Canon's Blue Goo will give it an IQ superiority over the f/4.0 version too.

A wide angle with minimal to no chromatic aberrations will be a machine of beauty!

tips for Europe trip

Hi all

I will be in Europe next month - Paris, Vienna, a few locations in northern Italy, then London for a few days on the way home. It is not a photography trip - it is a mixture of work and holiday - but of course I would like to come back with some good photos if possible.

For photography gear, I plan to take my 6D, 24-70/4 IS, 35 Art, 70-200/4 IS, and a couple of filters. I do not plan to take a tripod. I don't have a good, light, travel tripod, but to be honest even if I did I am not sure I would take it on this trip. I doubt I would get to use it very often, and we will be moving from place to place fairly often so I don't think it would be worth carrying.

Any thoughts on whether I should just leave the 70-200 at home? Will I miss an UWA and/or a faster telephoto?

Should I take a flash? My thinking is I am unlikely to use it very much really so it is not worth carrying. Maybe it would be more useful in places like churches though than I am allowing?

More generally (ie not necessarily specifically related to photography), any advice on places to go / things to do / things to watch out for, while I am on the trip?

I know these sorts of questions get asked all the time, and I have had a look through some old threads, but I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone had any comments or ideas to suggest.

f4 needed for birds if only shooting in full sun?

This may seem like an odd question, but I recently purchased a 500f4 ii to be used for bird photography. I love the lens. Image quality is fantastic. Auto focus is fast and it is built like a tank. But it is expensive, heavy, big and not so easy to lug around (obvious for such a big lens but just wanted to get it out there).

The real issue is, do I really need an f4 lens if shooting under full sun conditions? Most times would not really be taking advantage of the f4. Is there another option that gives the same image quality that I am not considering? I also own the 100-400 ii and a 1.4x, plus the Sigma 150-600C as well. Plan on using the 1.4x with the 500 as well.

Really looking for advice from people that currently own this lens or others like it.
