Patent: Telephoto lens add-on for a Smartphone

Last year a design for a telephoto lens smartphone add-on appeared in very basic renders.
Canon News has now uncovered a patent showing this addon in great detail.
With what we’ve seen Canon do with the likes of the PowerShot Zoom and PowerShot Pick, they have shown they’re not afraid to try new products and form factors to see how the market responds.
With the traditional PowerShot lineup all but dead, it looks like these are the type of products Canon is going to be trying, as well as trying to figure out a way to appeal to the Smartphone photographers.
The key to anything like this is good usability, an...

Big brother for the RF 100-500mm

I would really like Canon to make a big brother for the RF 100-500mm. By using the "same" design with 105mm filter / glass size they could probably make the following:
120-600mm f/4 - f/6,3 (actually ~f/6,1 which they could for marketing purposes call f/5,6 when using 1/2 stop increments)

f/4,0 _ 120 - 186mm
f/4,5 _ 187 - 314mm
f/5,0 _ 315 - 449mm
f/5,6 _ 450 - 584mm
f/6,3 _ 585 - 600mm

This would probably weigh about 2200-2300g (+tripod collar ~200g) so still not overly heavy for being really close focusing (~144cm / 56,7" at 600mm) and brightest in its class.

For me all of those focal length / aperture combinations would be very usable (to get nice DoF for varying situations).

Also, would be nice to have an option to buy it with a factory selected (individually fitted) 1,4x TC, resulting ~840mm f/8,5.

What do you think? Would any of you find this kind of a RF lens useful?

Does Canon ET-101 Lens Hood for RF 800mm f/11 fit over 95mm filter?

I just bought on Amazon a look-alike copy of the ET-101 hood (a JJC LH-101) for the RF 800mm f/11. At present, I have a Marumi 95mm filter on the lens to protect it in the absence of a hood. The knock-off filter doesn't fit over the filter. Does the original lens hood fit over such a filter? The diameter of the lens casing looks pretty slim and maybe it is a problem of the knurled ring of this particular filter being on the large side - I have used it with no problems on other 95mm filter lenses, and it doesn't affect IQ, though I tend not to use filters on telephotos and prefer just a lens hood.

Huge vignette when using Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 on Canon EOS R6 is normal?

I bought my Canon R6 thinking that all my lenses would work correctly on it using the adapter, but this is not the case for the Sigma Art 35mm. After already fixing known issues (disabling lens correction) a big vignette that I show below is left. I wonder if this is normal, because if it is, I won't be able to use this lens on this camera.

Something to laugh about

The following website stated, that the Canon EOS 3 has most impotent features  :

EOS R3 is all about speed

Canon Academy Italy has held an interview at Cortona Festival, with the Product Business Developer at Canon Italia, Alessandro Ravazzani. The Cortona On The Move (COTM) is an international photography festival that takes place in the city of Cortona, Tuscany, and includes workshops and portfolio readings, conferences, meetings, and awards with photographers, photo editors, and journalists from all over the world. In the interview, Ravazzani stated that the Canon EOS R3’s most impotent feature is its speed, based on advanced AI technologies, that utilizes Canon’s brand new self-developed 35mm FF, back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor.

The Canon EOS R3 at the Tokyo Olympic Games

In case you hadn’t heard, a little camera company named “Canon” has a new mirrorless camera coming in the near future, it is called the Canon EOS R3. This new camera is in the camera bags of photographers at the Tokyo Olympic Games that opened today with athletes waving to seats.
One photographer that has the Canon EOS R3 in his bag is the highly-regarded Jeff Cable. Jeff has had the pleasure of shooting the Olympics in Beijing, Vancouver, London, Sochi, Rio de Janeiro, PyeongChang, and now Tokyo.

Canon instant rebates coming to EOS R cameras and lenses in September

I have been told to expect an instant rebate program on EOS R and RF glass starting in September in both Canada and the United States. I do not know what other countries will have these programs, but I imagine this is going to be a very aggressive Christmas shopping season for many consumer product industries.
The backlog of lens orders should be sorted out by the end of August I have been told by a few retailers, though predicting demand is still a bit precarious.
The rebates won’t be huge, but I do expect to see both the EOS R6 and EOS R5 to be included in these rebate programs.

Peter McKinnon has released a review of sorts of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM. A lens that he claims in the title that it’s “THE BEST PRIME LENS. Period.”. I also completely agree with him. It’s rare that I don’t have the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM  on my EOS R5.

There is still discussion internally at Canon about an APS-C EOS R camera

There have been countless rumors and opinions of whether or not Canon will be bringing an APS-C camera with an RF mount to market to take the place of the Canon EOS 7D series of DSLRs. Most of the information has been quite vague through the years.
I have been told that Canon has actively been doing market research with select pros and others to see if there is a real demand for such a camera.  The EOS M line of Canon cameras is in a state of unknown, though I have reported a few times that the EOS M lineup will ride off into the sunset in its current form in favor of the RF mount.
There are zero plans for Canon to make RF-S lenses, and I think this makes a ton of sense.
I still think we’re going to see one someday, but I don’t know what sort of timeline we’re looking at. Canon still needs to work on the full-frame lineup, especially when it comes to new and “affordable” camera bodies to replace the EOS R and EOS RP.
I have more information on this topic that I’m going to keep...

Canon boosts forecasts, printer and camera demand strong

Canon Inc. (the “Company”), at a Board of Directors’ meeting, held on July 19, 2021, revised the consolidated results forecast for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2021, that it released on April 26, 2021, as follows.
Reason for Revision
In the second quarter of 2021, as was the case in the first quarter, sales of inkjet printers, which continue to be in high demand due to more people working and learning from home globally, grew strongly. Additionally, even amid restrictions on activities linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in and demand for cameras increased, resulting in sales remaining strong in each region, particularly for full-frame mirrorless cameras and interchangeable lenses. The Company is also posting sales growth of other products, such as medical and semiconductor lithography equipment, thanks to favorable market conditions. Amid inflation caused by a shortage of goods, we expect the favorable market environment to continue in the second half of the year...

Gordon Laing reviews the two “new” Big White Lenses for the RF mount

Back and April Canon officially announced the Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and the Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM telephoto lenses. Both of these lenses are basically a rework of their EF counterparts.
Gordon Laing was lucky enough to spend some quality time with these new lenses and gives us his impressions in the video above.
An interesting note about these new lenses Gordon mentions is that the native RF mount allows more power to get to the autofocus motors making them faster. By the sounds of it, this will be camera-dependent and will likely be available starting with the EOS R3.

Review: Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro

The-Digital-Picture has complete its review of the brand new Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM, It looks like it’s a great lens, but there may be an issue with focus shifting, and the price may cause some buyers pause.
From The-Digital-Picture
I consider a telephoto macro lens to be a mandatory part of my kit and always include the best available option. What is the best Canon macro lens? Focus shift aside, the Canon RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens is that lens.
I didn’t see the focus shift issue coming, and this issue is my primary complaint with this lens. Precise focusing is especially important with a macro lens, and this lens falls below expectations in regards to focus shift. Again, I see no issues at f/2.8 or f/11 and narrower. Hopefully, Canon can resolve this issue completely.
With an extremely fast, high-performing AF system and an advanced image stabilization system, this professional-grade lens is capable of delivering outstanding image quality, optically outperforming all...

Finally A Black Bear

The photos and video are not nearly what I had hoped, but this was a year of blood and sweat to get this footage. I have had venomous snake encounters, built a photography blind, almost had a heat stroke, bout froze to death, been lit up by yellow flies. You name it all for this one minute of video footage. It was the most excited I have been however just due to the effort. I had "cooler" bear encounters in Alaska, and even in Yellowstone, but none required the work to get this. If only she had shown up an hour later to make the light a bit better.

Canon EOS R3 sensor resolution to be 45mp?

Techradar is reporting that there are rumors of the Canon EOS R3 sporting a 45mp image sensor, just like the Canon EOS R5. I have reported that the EOS R3 will have a 30.1mp image sensor.
From Techradar:
Canon hasn’t yet officially confirmed the resolution of the Canon EOS R3, its equivalent mirrorless camera for pro sports photographers, but rumors have strongly suggested that it’ll also be a 45MP camera. We do already officially know that R3 will be able to shoot 30fps bursts and oversampled 4K video.
I haven’t had a single person tell me that the

Added an EOS 90D to my system stable.

I have been reviewing numerous writeups for the Canon EOS 90D weighing the Pros and Cons from the reviewers. After a few months of reviewing these articles, I have added the 90D to my Canon system. I like that I can use all of the lenses that I currently have, but I can also use the BG-E14 Battery Grip from my 70D. It will definitely be interesting going from a 20MP sensor to a 33MP sensor.

Here’s confirmation of the RF 100-400, RF 24 Macro and RF 18-45. Sadly, they’re quite delayed

When we posted our original RF lens roadmap, a lot of the lenses listed were expected to launch in 2021, and as we have seen, not many have come to fruition.
The most recent lenses to be announced have been the RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro and the RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM. The macro has begun shipping in small quantities and Canon themselves have already added that lens to its list of lenses with production delays.
As you can see from the image below, a few lenses on our roadmap were originally scheduled to have already been in production...

Canon aiming for a $799 full-frame camera? [CR2]

A pretty solid source with a decent track record has told me that Canon is aiming to release a full-frame RF mount camera for under $800 USD in 2022. The Canon EOS RP launched at $1299 USD, so this would be quite the accomplishment if it comes to fruition. Even launching a new full-frame camera at $999 would be quite welcomed. That said, if Canon could get the camera and a kit lens for under $1000USD, they’d have themselves a winner.
There are obviously no specifications for a camera that is likely at least a year away, but I do believe there is something to this just by what I have been shown.
Let’s see what comes of this information.

Extender 1.4x III with macro tube

Hi all,

I was just taking some macros using 100-400 L II, with an extension tube and 1.4x III on a 7D2. Of course, AF points were limited to a central 1+4. But, if I place the (elec contacts pin equipped) extension tube BETWEEN the lens and the extender, all AF points are usable. And the lens still works just fine. The minimum focusing distance with 20 mm extension tube is about 7 m. Now autofocus works even over far corners.

New Canon EOS R5 firmware may come sooner than previously announced

Last month, Canon announced a lot of firmware updates across the EOS R and Cinema EOS line, with the Canon EOS R5 scheduled to receive its next firmware update on August 18, 2021.
I have been told a couple of times now that the new firmware may arrive before then. So keep an eye on the Canon support website and your inbox if it does drop sooner than originally planned.
I wouldn’t consider the next firmware release for the EOS R5 to be a major release going by what Canon has said about it.

A new Canon ILC appears for certification, but we already know what it is

The Canon EOS R3 is coming in September according to the latest information that I have been given. As the camera gets closer, we’re going to see more tidbits of information over the next 2 months.
It looks like the Canon EOS R3 has appeared for its Bluetooth certification. Model numbers containing “DS” cover Canon RF mirrorless cameras as well as DSLRs.
While I have information about cameras coming after the EOS R3, the DS126835 isn’t one of them.

Canon EOS R3 Specifications:

Sunset at Moogerah Lake

Taken yesterday afternoon from about an hour before sunset all the way to last light. Bit frustrating as I wanted to use the tree for sunset but the good looking clouds had moved on by then also the lake got more and more ripple-y so I couldn't get the reflection of the sky at the end too.

Canon EOS R5 vs Sony A1 video review and comparison

Just watched Australian professional bird photographer Jan Wegener's YT video comparing the R5 and A1 cameras. Very fair video review IMO and thought CR members might enjoy his thoughts on both. I will tell you in advance that the R5 held its own and exceeded in some tests he put both cameras through. The A1 was def better in some regards, of course but look at the price difference between the two bodies. Overall, he found the R5 to be a better hybrid camera while the A1 excelled at FPS and filling up its buffer more slowly. At any rate, here is a link to Jan's video where you can make your own observations and draw your own conclusions. In fairness, I should mention that Jan(pronounced Yaan) is a Canon shooter, using primarily the R5.
