Backfocus with any 70-200 ( RF, EF 2/3) and canon R5 in Servo

Hi everyone! I am a photographer for Russia, Moscow.
As many people here I initially had a lockup/freezing issue with my R5. I recently sent it to CPS-Russia (main office) and they replaced the circuit board under warranty and also updated the firmware. That helped.

BUT! After receiving my body back I encountered that now when using a servo-mode (any type) and a 70-200 ( I have RF 70-200, but also tested another RF, and EF 2/3 USM lenses) I have severe backfocus especially at a tele-end (200 mm) and for distant targets that are approaching me ( skiers, snowboarders, cars etc.).
Originally I found it out during skiing competition ( I am a sports shooter).
Then I ran several tests with different lenses shooting approaching cars and had the same bad results. There is clear backfocus( several meters!), whereas DPP in 99% of the time shows the focus point where it was intended to be.

The test were run outside during daylight and a temperature of around -10 Celsius with:
- latest firmware for both all lenses and body;
- R5 + two RF 70-200/ EF 70-200 USM 2, EF 70-200 USM 3 ( all lenses were tested for optical quality by CPS, an they all were provided by CPS for test except for the RF lens I originally own);
- Several different Sandisk Extreme Pro SD-cards,
- Several different original batteries;
- various FPS;
- servo spot af/1-point af/intelligent tracking with initial point af choice;
- at 200 mm 90% of time, sometimes around 150-175mm;
- ISO ranging from 100 to 1000;
- shutter-speeds from 1/1250 to 1/3200;
- IS on/off;
- lens focus distance limiter on/off;
- mechanical shutter/electronic 1st curtain;
- cars approaching me at the speed about 30-60 km/p/h;
around 50+ meters distance to cars ( at closer distances the backfocus is less severe)
- I even invited an engineer from CPS as well as independent photographer to run the tests with me and to shoot themselves.

Result: same backfocus in most of the cases whatever we did.

I attach an album with one of the series and a DPP printscreen. If needed I can upload more.

The yellow taxi in the photos is supposed to be in focus. However it is blurred whereas the truck behind it is much sharper! Look at the plates. DPP shows red square on taxi for the whole series. It is only one of the series but I have many. If you really want I can upload them but hope you will believe me.

After that we tested ANOTHER R5, that is owned by CPS and is given for tests/as a replacement - SAME RESULT!
Unlike mine CPS R5 is said not to have ANY service history except for the firmware updates.

When checked according to CPS procedures NO PROBLEMS are found with any of the bodies.

So, though the engineers clearly see that something is wrong they can do nothing concerning the repair or replacement. I was told that Servo AF can not be checked by their equipment and is considered to work fine out of the box as long as the 1-shot af works fine ( it does).

We are all at a complete loss. We filed a ticket to Canon Japan but the guys from CPS do not expect to receive a quick answer or any real resolution.
Actually it might be that CPS somehow messed up both cameras not knowing that, but they will never admit that...

I really need your help in further tests! I would appreciate if the owners of R5 and 70-200 tested their cams in similar conditions and reported the results.
( 200 mm of 70-200, servo, approaching cars, distance 50+ meters, actually the further you start shooting the car as it is approaching - the better).

Is there anyone with similar problems or maybe heard of someone?

Lensrentals tear down Canon RF 100-500mm

A very impressive tear down of a very impressively designed and constructed lens. A driving motive was to discover why they had 4 copies with a cracked element, which Roger originally thought to be part of the unparked IS unit but later reported to be physically compartmentalised from it. This detailed description is worth reading to see just how much care, thought and attention Canon has brought to the design of this lens. The punch line of why the element cracked is...

Why I Returned My Canon C70

I'm a life-long Canon user and love their products.

I received my C70 last week. Unfortunately, the lenses outlined in the manual as compatible with the C70 are not correct. When Canon announced the C70, I was aware that only 3 EF lenses were compatible with the C70. I planned to wait until my 400 and 600mm lenses were compatible with the C70. From announcement to release, I kept in contact with CPS. I asked the same question...when will Canon list the EF lenses compatible with the C70? The answer: Once Canon releases the manual, it will list all of the compatible EF, EF-S and Cinema lenses.

When Canon released the manual, I was jubilant (pages 203-204). I placed my pre-order and waited. When the C70 arrived, I attached the 600mm via the Canon 0.71x Mount Adapter and took it for a test drive. When I downloaded the video, the first thing I noticed was a considerable amount of vignetting. Almost like it had a fisheye lens. The other issue is that I could not find the setting to record in 4k@120fps. I got on the phone with CPS and they began troubleshooting the issue. Within the C70 menu, there is a setting where you can update the camera based on the attached lens. However, that option was grayed-out. In addition, the rep tried to identify how to set the C70 to record in 4k@120fps. After confirming that the 600mm was compatible with the C70, the rep placed me on hold and escalated the matter. After an approximately 10 minute wait, the rep returned and confirmed the C70 could only record 4k@120fps in the slow or fast motion setting. The rep then added, "while I was waiting for an answer from a senior level specialists, I googled the C70. Every article and YouTube review began with the same comment 'this camera can record 4k@120fps'. They all failed to mention that it was only possible in slow or fast motion setting. It is very misleading." With respect to the 400mm and 600mm lenses, turns out that even though the manual clearly states which EF lenses will work with the C70 when combined with a Canon EF to RF Mount Adapter (Canon makes three EF to RF mount adapters), Canon did to include the caveat that the 0.71x only works with 3 EF lenses (as of September 2020). Canon will, in the future, release updates for other lenses but no timeline is available. I specifically purchased the C70 because of the 0.71x Mount Adapter since it would eliminate cropping. I do not have any information for the EF-S or Cinema lenses. I do not recall the exact words, but the rep made a comment that they were not surprised Canon missed this detail.

I next rang the East Coast store where I purchased the C70. After I explained what happened, the rep there made an almost identical comment on how this did not surprise them and that Canon has done similar things in the past which infuriates its customers. This is the first time I've ever reported a negative comment with Canon.

I will continue capturing video with my 1D x and when and if Canon provides a firmware update for the 400 and 600mm lenses, I will revisit the C70.
I'm so bummed. I planned to use the C70 as a starting point to transition to RF while maintaining my EF lenses.

Canon 11-24 L Lens: Anyone tried this for 360 Pano for Virtual Tours?

HI all,
I've been watching a bunch of YouTube and reading some sights about shooting DSLR's (and I suppose mirrorless too) and stitching together panos for 360 shots to be used for Virtual tours (real estate, etc).

I have the Canon 11-24 L lens and was hoping to experiment with this since I have it on hand. I have a Really Right stuff Pano kit, I can use on my tripod....

So far, what I've read seems to indicate that fisheye is the way to go and one even seemed to say that a ultra wide rectilinear lens was, in fact, a BAD choice to use.

I just have a hard time believing that with such a good lens and so wide, combined with software that it would not work.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Experience in trying to shoot this type of photography with this lens?

I"d be using it on my trusty old 5D3.

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Industry News: Sony teases a major alpha mirrorless announcement

It looks like Sony is getting ready to announce its first 8K mirrorless camera on January 26, 2021. Most people seem to be expecting an Alpha a9 III/flagship mirrorless camera.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sony | Alpha (@sonyalpha)

Rumoured specifications are still hard to come by at this time, but this announcement has all the feeling of a new flagship camera for Sony.
All that has really been reported is that new camera will shoot 8K30p, have a 50mp full-frame sensor and will be priced around $5000USD. I would expect some overlap of features to the a7s III.
Photo Rumors reported the following specifications last year.

 Bigger and truly pro body
 9.44M dots EVF
 Newly developed sensor
 8K video recording with no...

The next Canon EOS R5 firmware update is coming next month [CR2]

The next Canon firmware update for the Canon EOS R5 is still on schedule to be released sometime in February 2021 I have been told. The same source also suggested that the new firmware is already out there in beta form in loaner cameras, though I have not been able to confirm that. Some people take their NDA’s seriously I guess!
There are also more long-term plans to add features to both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 over the next 12-24 months. Keep flooding Canon with what you’d like to see added to both cameras, they are listening.
The next Canon EOS R5 firmware will include

Canon Cinema RAW light addition
C-Log 3
1080p @ 120fps
Bug fixes

I was not given an update on new firmware for the Canon EOS R6.

Situations That seem to challenge the amazing AF systems of the R6 and R6

Having used the R6 for a little while now i am starting to come to grips with the incredible AF system. But having said that there are certain situations that seem to defeat it. So this thread is to relay your experiences where the AF has been thrown off. For me the most interesting one is that the eye AF fails with Zebras, even at close range. Obviously the high contrast stripes have something do do with it but I found it interesting nevertheless considering how incredible it is with just about every other situation. Is anyone else finding any quirks like this?

Canon to announce the PowerShot Pick next week

Canon will soon announce the PowerShot AI, which is not the confirmed name. Canon first showed off this idea back in 2018 at The Photography Show in the UK, and once again last year at CES 2020.
It appears that Canon has decided to bring the camera to market and it will be announced quite soon, though I don’t have an official date of the announcement.
Canon PowerShot AI Specifications (Based on the concept and could change)

12mp 1/2.3″ CMOS Sensor
19-57mm 35mm equivalent zoom lens (4x zoom)

Canon and Sony go at it in the latest BCN Japanese market share report

BCN Awards has released their camera and lens market share report for 2020 in Japan. This is not a representation of worldwide sales, so please keep that in mind.
I will say that I’m surprised that Canon didn’t hit the top 3 in video cameras, which is likely not too influenced by Cinema EOS, but even the more affordable offerings don’t see to make much noise in Japan.
The pandemic may have affected these numbers in some way, but we won’t get a picture of how they were affected for another year or two. Canon obviously sold less EOS M cameras than in 2019 and lost market share to Sony in mirrorless cameras, but the EOS R6 and EOS R5 are selling extremely well in Japan and globally, considering they’re still hard to come by is good news for Canon.

Issues with RF100-500

I was one of the first to buy the RF100-500. For various reasons I was unable to use the lens for some weeks..
In my first shoot I was very disappointed with the images as they were soft, particularly at the long end of the zoom.
I have been out twice since and my pictures are rubbish.
It must be a lens issue as I also have the RF800 and those images are the proverbial tack sharp.
Today I spoke with Canon and I am preparing to send the lens in for service. (Dealing with Canon service by telephone wasn't the best or fastest process sadly).
Before I package the lens and send it off, has anybody else experienced issues with the lens?
(I have the latest firmware installed and I have tried stabiliser on, stabiliser off).
I am gutted because especially during my first outing I had what should have been awesome bird pictures.

Quad-Pixel AF and a global shutter coming in 2021?

Are Quad-Pixel AF and a global shutter coming in 2021 to the new flagship EOS R camera? It’s a strong possibility according to a good source.
Canon continues to develop their flagship EOS R system camera, a camera most of us have dubbed the EOS R1. The camera is reported to be shown to the world ahead of the Tokyo Summer Games which begin in July of this year.
One feature that will be coming to the camera according to a very solid source is a Quad-Pixel AF system. QPAF would improve autofocus accuracy no matter what orientation the subject or the camera is in.
The same source claims that there is a possibility that a global shutter will appear in the EOS R1. For those that don’t know, this would effectively remove rolling shutter when shooting video or stills in the electronic shutter mode. There are challenges to making this happen, but it is still on the table for the camera.
There has been no mention of sensor...

Nikon cutting back production in Japan because of Covid-19

This has been announced by Nikon but presumably will apply to other Japanese companies, especially those who manufacture more in Japan than does Nikon.

Linear polarisers on mirrorless bodies

It is possible to use a linear polariser on a mirrorless body such as the R5.

I thought circular polarisers were required when the mirror of the SLR had a portion that was transmitting as well as reflecting, i.e. to send light to the AF unit or exposure meter.

As there is no mirror in mirrorless, can a linear polariser be used.

My experience, although it is quite at long time since I have used a linear polariser, is that they had a much greater polarising effect, to the point where for landscapes you had back it off from maximum polarisation as it made grass and foliage look too saturated and unnatural. I have never come across this situation with a circular polariser.

RF Wide Options...........

I have an EF 14 f/2.8 mii and an EF 16-35 f/4. I use the 14 for rare astro stuff (Milky Way, Star Trails) and some landscapes and the 16-35 as part of a triad for travel (travel? Well, up until about 9 months ago, I used to travel. But these days, don't get out so much :rolleyes:). They work well with EF-RF adapters. But, I am thinking about my future in RF land and am trying to trim down my stable of lenses.

Were I to sell the 14 and 16-35 and then get an RF 15-35 f/2.8, I'd think this one zoom could take the place of the two EF lenses I have now. I know the lens is a bit bigger than the 16-35, but it won't need an adapter and is faster. Anyone try the RF for astro? Reviewers suggest the RF is same or maybe even corner sharper than the EF. Anyone else make this kind of change?

I know these are decisions for which there is no right answer and would depend on one's style and usage but I value any thoughts. Thanks.

Another video demonstrating the R5 bad weather capability

So in a thread a few weeks ago I posted a video from Morten Hilmer via YouTube. I pointed out he wasn't a camera tester by any means and he didn't want his channel to go that direction, he is 100% about wildlife photography, videography and audio. But he was recently shooting on a trip with a friend who had an R5 and and was impressed by the side to side performance vs his Nikon Z7, he has been a long time Nikon user but for him the gear is a means to an end.

Anyway he was impressed enough with his friends results that he is borrowing an R5 setup complete with a 200-400 f4 and the last video I posted included a few of his thoughts at the end. Well he has just posted again and it really shows again how robust the R5 is and at the end of the video he gives some tips on how he cares for his gear after getting it in situations many of us never would!

Anyway, here is the video, hope some of you enjoy it!

Wide Angle Macros

Hi, im wondering what is closest to Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide Angle Macro in terms of Wide angle(15mm) and magnification ratio(1X). This lens seems really cool but alot of drawbacks. Minimum working distance and lighting are the ones im most afraid. Whats a good way to generate lights you use, only saw some DIY articulated arms with flashes/lights.
Soft corners , distortion , vignette, aberrations, exif, aperture, dont have choices that i know so far if i want that effect, stopping down seems to reduce some of it.

It would be for RF mount to shoot plants/mushrooms , not mostly insects.

I saw Canon roadmap have a RF 24mm f/1.8 macro planned, we dont know magnification yet. If it has all electronic functions with Canon body and less drawbacks, gonna be hard to choose the Laowa 15mm f/4 unless we really master it already. Would 24mm has same issue of lighting as the Laowa? or Canon release something to help this.

Im interested in other lenses with 0.5X to 1X and 30mm or less, i cant find super list of all macro lenses that fit EF/RF. Thanks
