Canon R5 Records 4KHQ 30fps Externally for 4 HOURS

Been detailing this in the Canon Rumors discord. But I've found that if there are no cards in the camera, you get 4 hours of external recording before "overheating". I use quotes here because after overheating and shutting down, a quick 5 min rest allowed me to shoot that last 20min segment in 4KHQ, with still no warnings - and I expect it to last at least another hour or two. I tested this in the video with a dummy battery, but afterwards tested with a new Canon LP6H, and the battery died before any warnings.

This leads me to believe there is some type of temperature limitation going on with the cards. Either the cards are triggering an aggressive overheating timer, or the cards themselves are what's overheating to the point of turning off. This makes sense, as the only thing that is hot is the card. During these 4 hours, the camera is nearly cool to the touch, with maybe some warmth on the back panel.

I will be doing some outdoor tests to see if ambient temps play a role. But the original "only 45 min / 75 with overheat control on" does not seem to be the case without SD/CFEx cards installed.

Wait for R5... Mark 2?

The time gap between the 5D Mark III and Mark IV was about two years, same as the time between the EOS R and the R5. More so than previous releases, I am starting to feel that I may really want to upgrade to the Mark II of the R5 line, and given that I appear to have plenty of time to reconsider my preorder (it's looking like 1 month on the low end, and 3 months on the high end), I've been considering whether the right move is to just wait out this first revision, with the hope of seeing an R5 Mark II come 2022. The most unfortunate part about all this is the lens mount transition lining up with the switch to mirrorless. I was hoping to start transitioning to RF now, but under my new thinking that would mean getting EOS R to hold me over as there's probably not going to be an RF-to-EF adapter to use RF lenses on an EF body. I'm curious if anyone else is having similar thoughts along these lines.

Rumored RF mount Cinema camera specifications [CR2]

As previously reported, Canon will be announcing a Cinema EOS camera with an RF mount, likely in late August ahead of when IBC is usually held.
Canon RF mount Cinema EOS camera rumored Specifications:

Same Super35 sensor as the Canon Cinema EOS C200
Internal ND filters (mechanical) up to 6 stops
2x Mini XLR inputs
Full-size HDMI
4K 4:2:2 10bit in ALL-I and IPB up to 120p
1x CFexpress Type B Slot
2x SD UHS-II slots
External RAW recording options up to 4K 120P
2x LP-E6NH batteries
Camera size smaller than the EOS-1D X Mark III
Price: $4499 USD

Canon will also announce the previously rumored RF mount adapters.

PL to RF with Cooke/i
EF to RF focal length reducer
EF cinema lock to RF.

The first two adapters have a new design (rumored) and will not be compatible with current RF cameras. I’m not sure about...

I've been watching some YouTube and reading up on the Leica M10 Monochrom camera released not terrible long back.

I've been shooting and converting a lot of digital to B&W as a way to give myself new challenges, and I have several MF film cameras that I shoot B&W (Hassy 501CM, Yashica Mat-124, Fuji GSW690 III)...and those have proven to be a LOT of fun, not only with the different aspect ratios and working with film, but also, making me try to think and "see" in black and white.

The reviews of the Leica M10 seem to indicate that it has a LOT going for it, by being a dedicated monochrome sensor, with no color (Bayer?) filter in front of the sensor...that it will be capable of sharper images, and even gain you a stop or so of light.

I read this article : Why Don't More Manufacturers Make Monochrome Versions of Their Cameras? That got me thinking more about this.

It appears that there are some specialized shops that will make current digital cameras monochrome...but for a price!!

MaxMax - Monochrome Cameras

I know, it is a niche product, but as in that article it mentioned that the Canon Ra for astro photography is a bit niche....would they maybe consider a dedicated monochrome camera?

If so...would you buy it?

I gotta say....I would seriously consider it. But I also thought, that while I do want a FF B&W sensor, I would appreciate the smallness maybe of the Canon M cameras or even a rangefinder type one like the Leica ( or what if Fuji put out a B&W only X-Pro3?).

Anyway...what are your thoughts?

Would you want one?
Would you buy one?

Zoom for Canon RP?

I am looking for suggestions on a zoom lens for my Canon RP. I have the 35mm IS, but would like to get a zoom for general use, travel (post COVID), etc.

My initial thought is the 24-105 RF, but I was never all that impressed with the old EF version I've also thought about getting the EF>R mount adapter and going with either an older Canon zoom, a third party, etc.

Curious to hear what others are using as their general purpose/walk around zoom on the R mount. Thanks in advance for any advice and insight!

Are Two EOS M cameras coming in 2020? [CR1]

I have had multiple reports over the last few months that Canon plans to announce two new EOS M cameras in 2020. Recently I was given a bit of information about the two models. Unfortunately, I have been unable to confirm this information with a source I’d consider above [CR1], so please treat this information accordingly.
Canon EOS M7
The new flagship of the EOS M lineup. Yes, it goes against Canon’s normal nomenclature, but the “7” means a lot to the Canon lineup. So take what you want from the number “7”.
This camera will reportedly have the same 32mp sensor as the Canon EOS M6 Mark II, as well as IBIS, Dual Card slots, and “all the bells and whistles”.
The camera is scheduled to be announced in Q4 of 2020, but consider announcement dates a moving target in the current global environment.
I was also told that Canon will announce a “higher-end” EF-M lens for this release.
Canon EOS M50 Mark II
Later in Q4 of 2020, Canon will reportedly announce the EOS M50 Mark II...

Screen\Viewfinder Display

Hi

I have read page 768 of the R5 manual. If I select the 3rd option of Viewfinder will the playback and menu still display on the screen and not viewfinder?
Basically I don't want to use the screen for live view and composing the shot. So just like a dslr. I don't see the point in having the top panel if the screen is always on.
But I would like to use the screen for playback and menu. I noticed you can switch of the screen with a custom button but will it come back on for the playback and menu?
Also what happens if you press the Q button in the above scenarios?

Thanks

Anthony

Gordan Laing Review: The Canon EOS R5 for photography

Gordon Laing from Camera Labs has completed his review of the Canon EOS R5. Instead of reviewing the video performance of the camera, his review focuses on stills photography. The Canon EOS R5 looks to be a great one.
From the autofocus to the competitive dynamic range, the Canon EOS R5 will likely find its way into a lot of photographers’ bags.

R5 Q&A - shared experiences

Hi. Thought I would open up a thread for Q&A/FAQ for the R5 where you can ask questions and hopefully get some answers along the way that aren't embedded in the overheating debates.

Q1 for me is that I didn't seem to get close enough ie minimum focus distance with me R5/RF adaptor/EF100mm L macro for 1:1 yesterday. Can anyone else check/confirm this or have I done something wrong?

Please help: I'm in camera purchase purgatory (I pre-ordered the R6)

I have the R6 pre-ordered, and unfortunately found out about all this overheating after the fact.

Here's the thing:

1. I only have $2500 to spend on a camera body + tax, nothing more (lens is already taken care of). The A7SIII matches and surpases the R6 in every way, and I'd love it, but it's just too far out of my budget.
2. I would prefer to stick with Canon as they have the color science and autofocus I've always wanted. This is my first Canon purchase and I want it to be the right one.
3. I would like the maximum amount of resolution / framerate options preferably with no crop / as little crop as possible. The specs of the R6 are fantastic, but I can't seem to find any cameras that even come close to what it offers for the cost.
4. I'll be mostly shooting indoors for but I'm dreading the thought of me needing to be mobile in the future aka outdoors or on-set in less-than adequate temperatures.
5. I've looked at the EOS R + Ninja V as an option as the quality will be fantastic, but the thought of the 4k crop + limited fps options kinda turned me off from that option
6. I considered the A7R III (which is currently at discount to $2500 at my local camera shop) but the thought of the terrible menu system and problematic color science turned me off from that option.

I hope I'm not the only one that feels like they're in this situation. I want a Canon - I've waited years to pull the trigger. I was so excited about the R6 and literally pre-ordered it right after the announcement from my local camera shop. I have not canceled my pre-order as of yet as I don't want to make any rash decisions.

I'm open to any opinions / suggestions. Thank you in advance.

The white thermal temperature warning icon (while taking stills)

Has anyone been able to trigger the white temperature warning icon while taking photos listed under page 284 in the R5 manual and can share their experience under what conditions it happened?

I shoot long exposure timelapses and im worried that the temperture warning could cause.. "the image quality of the sitll images will decline" as the manual states

Crowdsourced R5 Shipment Tracker

Canon R5 Shipment Tracker

Hopefully this can help us all get an idea of where we all are in the shipment queue instead of jumping around threads and seeing who got what from where.

Feedback welcome!

8/14 Update: Shipped by Canon via FedEx from Hayward, CA. ETA 8/17 to San Diego, CA.

Changelog:
1.1 Changed times to EST/EDT (using formula for existing entries) to more closely match B&H/Canon announcement times
1.2 Added colors to visually identify each vendor & order status
1.3 Sorting by Body/Kit > Vendor > Order Date > Order Time, will try and do this at least every night
1.3 Locked user-input cells to prevent inadvertent spreadsheet sorting/manipulation
1.4 Added two row "markers" to help identify inadvertent sorting
1.5 Will input generic values for any missing entries (e.g. time) to help with sorting algorithm.
