Patent: Canon RF 70-240mm f/4 IS and RF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS

Canon is obviously busy developing new lenses for the RF mount, and we expect a lot of new lenses next year. We also expect some more affordable offerings for the RF mount.
In the latest round of patents, we see optical formulas for both an RF 70-240mm f/4 IS and an RF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS.

X-rite Passport question.

Never have I ever used my X-Rite Passport, though I have had it for about 5 years. Since I shoot portraits I have been thinking of using it. My questions are:

1. Do I need to use the card each time I change the flash power?
2. Does the white balance card make a big difference? I have just been changing white balance until the person or scene look "right" to me.
3. Do you use the color checker also? Again, I change luminescence, colors until they look right.

I use Adobe's Lightroom and Photoshop CC.

I know these questions probably sound stupid to some of you who have been using the passport for a good while. However, I really am ignorant when it comes to this. It will be quite the hurtle for me to learn this. I have a hard time processing new information and putting it all together.

Thanks!

Canon’s Cinema EOS plans for 2020 [CR2]

The Cinema EOS lineup has been pretty successful for Canon, but 2019 was a slow year for the system as we only saw one new camera, the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II.
We have been told that at least two new Cinema EOS cameras will come in 2020, one will be the Cinema EOS C300 Mark III, a Super35 4K camera that will follow the modular design of the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II.
The second, and much later in 2020 will be a replacement for the Cinema EOS C100 Mark II. When the Cinema EOS C200 was announced, we were told at that time that it was effectively a replacement for the C100 Mark II, but a couple of sources are saying that’s not the case. One source suggested it could be the first Cinema EOS camera with an RF mount “out of the box” and would introduce a new form factor for the lineup.
We have also been told that Canon will not announce an 8K camera in the “usual...

The Sony user pile on.

Incredible. I am a member of a local Facebook lighting group. One of our members, a Canon shooter, asked the group for reasons to get a new Sony rather than a Canon. My simple answer was, "If you like Sony's colors and ergonomics better." I did not talk Sony down and extol any virtues of Canon. Just a very short post.

I got mobbed! haha. They all focused on color science. I made three innocuous comments like, "Glad you are happy." etc. The leader of the group is a Sony shooter. My ability to post to the group was taken away. Wow. Anyway, it is funny to me considering the number of people that sign up for accounts here just to tell us about Sony. Cult like.

Does Lightroom 6.0 Support the R and RP cameras ?

Hi, being a bit stingy here, but I don't have a subscription to Adobe, but make do with Lightroom 6.0 for which I paid a one-off license fee.

I'm wondering whether upgrading to the new world of Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras will mean I also have to move to the Adobe Subscription Model.

Could anyone enlighten me on the implications of going to the R and RP as far as Lightroom subscriptions are concerned ?

many thanks

The tables have turned?

Was on a camera club field trip this weekend. Planned to have a decent range zoom but also a wide. What I wound up using actually surprised me.......

As a very happy DSLR shooter (my go-to is the 5Div with the 28-70 f/2.8), I got the RP because it was lighter and smaller than the 5Div and was full frame. This was to be my "backup" body....the travel, the grab and go, or the one to use if the DSLR was not working. I got the RP after selling my entire M / M5 setup and some lenses I no longer used and have been happy.

So, this past weekend, after a very short time in the field, I found I was using the RP with the RF 24-105 as my primary kit and and relegated the 5Div with the EF 16-35 as the backup! I could have been happy with the RP alone but this way did not have to change lenses in the field.

Really starting to look towards the R as my primary but not there yet.

Canon is gearing up for a big 2020 [CR2]

We’re not going to see any more major product announcements from Canon in 2019, outside of the official announcement of the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, which we expect in the next month or two, with the availability of the new lens coming in December.
We have been told that Canon has a major announcement planned on or around February 11, 2020, which would come ahead of CP+, which begins at the end of February.
A second source said “your readers should start getting excited for Photokina”, which is happening in May. Unfortunately, that was all we were told and we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out what is possibly coming.
We expect both the high-megapixel EOS R body and EOS-1D X Mark III to be announced in the first half of 2020, along with a lot of new RF mount lenses.

Canon EOS R High Speed Display stutter solution (mostly).

There have been many who complain about "stutter" when they are in Continuous Hi drive mode. Here is a very good way to remedy that (mostly):

Menu--->Camera Icon---->6---->High Speed Display. Set high speed display to on. Obviously, this only works when shooting in Continuous Hi mode.

There is a very noticeable difference in the stutter. What "High Speed Display" does is allow the EVF display to update faster than the 5fps rate the camera shoots at. Give it a try. :)

Somebody told me they want the smoothness of video from shot to shot. Impossible at 5fps and with a mechanical shutter. I was also told that "blackout" is preferred (by the same person). Isn't that caused by a mirror? Like the song says, "We can't always get what we want."

Anyway, "High Speed Display" is a huge improvement. This feature does not work with adapted lenses. So when using an adapted lens, one is SOL. Canon EF, Tamron, Sigma, etc... it won't work.

How do shutters fail?

I've never had a camera for long enough for its shutter to go beyond its life expectancy - until recently. I've been using two 5Dm4 for weddings for more than two years now; I didn't check their shutter count but I estimate they are probably near or beyond 150,000. Recently, one of them developed a strange fault: the shutter stops working every 500-1000 shots. The mirror gets stuck open, and the camera stops reacting to the shutter button until I remove the battery (simply switching the camera off doesn't help). After I put the battery back, the mirror gets to its normal closed position and the camera continues working normally for another 500-1000 shots.

Is this how shutter failure (or getting close to shutter failure) looks or is it something else?

Error 70 message after Firmware 1.4 upgrade

I upgraded my R body today with firmware 1.4 and when I turned the body back on I get an Error 70 message. Saying to turn the camera on and off and replace the battery. None of these make a difference. I have tried reformatting the card in another camera and on my Mac and tried a different SD card. Nothing helps.

Anyone experienced the same issue?
Many thanks

Question on drop in filters for EOS R adapter

I do a lot of full spectrum infrared photography, which requires various filters to be used to get the desired images. I'm thinking very heavily about getting an EOS R as my next IR camera (as Sony, who I'm typically very happy with, have made things rather difficult for us IR users on their latest cameras).

One thing that has my attention is the adapter with drop in filters. Is it a specific drop in adapter that's unique to the EOS R system, or is it the same that's used on some of the other EOS camera lenses? Main reason is that it's unlikely that Canon will offer an IR drop in specifically, and I suspect I'd most likely need to use gelatin filters, so a drop in that lets me cut my own gelatin filters would be necessary, unless there's a drop in that lets me screw in a small size filter.

Thanks in advance!

Inexpensive lens for Wildlife ?

Hey , this morning and not for the first time a Sparrow Hawk landed on our garden fence about 40 feet from the window - grabbing the camera quick out the back only had my 855mm 1.4 Sigma Art to hand which did an ok job with some heavy cropping but could do with something longer - I also have a Canon 135mm f2 L which is better but i would like a bit more reach just for the odd interesting bird and maybe dragonfiles etc.

I have considered getting a teleconverter for my 135 or an older / cheaper 300 or 400 mm lens along the lines of an old Canon Sigma etc something for under a £100 as its not for anything other than fun - and I will just leave it ready to shoot by the window :) - anyone got any good recommendations / advice ?

thank you Andrew

Why I've been absent

I used to be a regular participant in the Canon Rumors forums. I really enjoyed adding to my lens collection and anticipating the improvements coming in the next Canon camera. I admit I suffered from Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I quit buying over a year ago.

I'm currently using a 5D4 for my work with models and a 77D for travel photography. I have a huge collection of lenses for the EF mount and a few for the EF-S mount.

My problem is that I have no reason to buy any new gear other than occasionally a filter or a new lighting toy. I suspect I'm partly responsible for any downturn in Canon sales. I've been watching the development of full frame mirrorless bodies by Canon and Sony. I'm not impressed. They don't really offer anything I need. Sure the Sony sensors are great, but I'd have to learn a new menu system and buy expensive new lenses. The Canon mirrorless bodies don't get a lot of good reviews and I'd have to use an adapter with my existing lenses or upgrade to extremely expensive glass in the new mount.

I have no need for more megapixels. I even use the M-RAW setting sometimes on my 5D4 to reduce the file size and speed up processing of a batch of 500 images.

I'm pretty much stuck, but I'm stuck in a good place.

It looks like I may keep using my current gear for many years. I know how to use it and it does the job I need it to do without ever breaking down. I miss reading this forum regularly, but just can't seem to get interested in the current offerings.

RF24-70 & RF15-35 Reviews

Digital Camera world have just posted reviews. Seems both are good but edge sharpness could be better ...

Here is a short list of unreleased Canon gear from certification agencies

Nokishita has posted known and unreleased Canon gear, for the moment the list is pretty short.
Unreleased Canon gear:

DS586191 (DS586192 / DS586193 / DS586194)
Wireless file transmitter

Wi-Fi (IEEE802.11a / b / g / n / ac) compatible

Interchangeable lenses:

3450C005AA (RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM)
3792C005AA (RF 85mm f/1.2L DS USM)

Some sites are stating that the DS586191 is the EOS-1D X Mark III, it is not. The EOS-1D X Mark III likely won’t have internal wifi capabilities, therefore wouldn’t need to get wifi certification. Secondly, Canon DSLR product codes begin with “DSC”, not “DS”.
We have some more information coming soon to address new gear and when we can expect to see the next major announcements from Canon.

Are RF lenses worth it at the moment?

So hear me out. I'm only talking from my own perspective right now but I'm not a fan of focus by wire, feel the lenses are way heavier than their EF counterparts even with the adapter and when comparing L lenses they're just as sharp on an R body other than the 50 1.2

On the subject of the RF50 it's staggeringly sharp, but massive at the same time and doesn't have the softer more organic look of the EF50 which doesn't have the back focusing issues once on the R.

The 85 1.2 is frikking massive again and we have a great EF 1.4

The 28-70 is awesome but HUGE and heavy.

The RF35 while having a nice macro feature can't seem to acquire focus at distance in low contrast and the STM hunts lots in servo when the EF 35 F2 IS nails it always.

It's almost as if in the pursuit of being different Canon went too far and stepped backwards...other than in the IQ department which is def improved but only for pixel peeping?

Canon Interview: EOS R Pro Must Surpass Past Performance

Recently, Japanese website Newswitch has just interviewed Canon Managing Executive Officer, Takeshi Tokura. Below are some highlights of this interview:

  • Camera market will shrink due to the spread of smartphones, but Canon will look at consumers and create products that make them feel attractive.
  • EOS M50 is very popular in Japan for women. Canon is also confirmed to announced EOS M200 soon to replace both EOS M50 & M100.
  • Canon will introduce cameras for Women and Children and so on.
  • EOS R system is still not very popular, expansion of the system is the most important issue (performance, price, etc.)
  • EOS R Pro/High-end must be a product that surpasses past performance. Feature like “rapid, comfortable, high image quality, high video performance”.
  • Expansion of mirrorless lenses is also important. Canon want to create a unique mirrorless lens that could not be prepared with DSLR.
  • Devices inside the camera will need to be different when the 5G environment is ready.
  • Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games is an opportunity for many people to recognize the greatness of interchangeable lens systems and the value of images.
