Industry News: DJI Announces the Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 Drone

HTML:
The long awaited DJI Phantom 4 v2.0 is now official and available for purchase from DJI. The new drone is already in stock and available for purchase.

About the DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2.0:

The new Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 features an OcuSync HD transmission system, which supports automatic dual-frequency band swiping and connects to DJI Goggles wirelessly. Like the Phantom 4 Pro and Advanced, the Phantom Pro v.20 is equipped with a 1-inch 20mp sensor capable of shooting 4K/60fps video and Burst Mode stills at 14fps. Plus, its FlightAutonomy system includes dual rear vision sensors and infrared sensing systems for a total of 5 directions of obstacle sensing and 4 directions of obstacle avoidance.

Camera with 1” 20mp Sensor:

The onboard camera hs been redesigned to us a 1” 20mp CMOS sensor. A custom engineered lens made up of eight elements is arranged in seven groups, it is the first DJO camera to use a mechanical shutter, eliminating rolling shutter distortion which can occur when taking images of fast moving subjects or when flying at high speed. In effect, it is as powerful as many traditional ground cameras. More powerful video processing supports H.246 4K videos at 60fps or H.265 4K at 30fps, both with a 100mpbs bitrate. Advanced sensors and processors ensure everything is captured with more image detail and the image data needed for advanced post-production.

1-Inch 20-Megapixel CMOS Sensor:

Sensor size is more important to image quality that the number of pixels because a larger sensor captures more information in every pixel, improving dynamic range, signal-to-noise ration, and low light performance. The 1” 20mp CMOS sensor in the Phantom 4 Pro v.20 is almost four times the size of the Phantom 4’s 1/2.3” sensor. It uses larger pixels and has a maximum ISO of 12800 as well as increase contrast. It is good enough for images to be used immediately, while also capturing enough detail for advanced post-processing.

Production Optimized 4K:

An enhanced video processing system allows video to be capture in cinema and production optimized DCI 4L/60fps at a bitrate of 100Mbps, enabling you to get high resolution slow motion shots. The Phantom 4 Pro v2. also supports H.265 video codec (Maximum resolution 4K/30fps). For a given bitrate, H.265 doubles the amount of image processing as H.264, resulting in significantly enhances image quality. Record in the high dynamic range D-log mode to make the most of this image data for color grading.

High Resolution Lens:

The resolution and contrast of a lens is critical to image quality, because only a quality lens capture sharp, vivid photos at high resolutions. The brand new Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 camera has an aerial optimized f/2.8 wide-angle lens with a 24mm equivalent focal length. It features eight elements – 2 aspherical – arranged in seven groups that fit into a smaller, more compact frame. Its images are consistently detailed with low distortion and low dispersion, ensuring that photos and videos are sharp and vivid. For the first even with DJO camera, MTF results have been made public, so people can get a better understanding of lens performance.

Review: How Did Zeiss Go Backwards With the Milvus 15mm f/2.8?

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the Zeiss Milvus 15mm f/2.8 and have come away with some surprising results.

From The-Digital-Picture:

This lens’ predecessor, the Zeiss 15mm f/2.8, was one of my all-time favorite lenses and I very much looked forward to evaluating the Milvus version. Unfortunately, this evaluation became a very time-consuming one with four different lenses being examined. I can’t make a lens look any better than it really is and, while this lens is really sharp in the center of the frame, I can’t make the corners shine and that leaves me wanting, especially relative to the lens I previously owned. If these lenses truly have the same optical design, something happened to degrade the image quality. Read the full review

I find this shocking, as the original Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 is my favourite wide angle lens for landscape work and has proven to be a workhorse and optical gem. I’m shocked the Milvus 15mm f/2.8 appears to have taken a step backwards.

New Type of Camera Coming from Canon Ahead of Photokina [CR1]

HTML:
We continue to hear murmurs about a new style of camera coming from Canon ahead of Photokina.

We have touched on this in the past and continue to see mentions of it in our inbox. The problem is we’re not hearing about it from known sources, but what we’re being told doesn’t seem to be wishlist type of stuff that we get from time to time.

A couple of people have said the new camera is video oriented, but will also be a “capable stills shooter” and come with an EF mount. The camera will technically be a “mirrorless” camera, but it won’t be part of the EOS M lineup.

This could just be the XC style camera with an EF mount, or it could be something else.

2018 has been a difficult year so far when it comes to confirming information, but a lot of what we’re being told from unknown people all seems to be pointing in the same direction.

More to come…

Robots to Hand Polishing: 10 Facts From Canon's L Lens Factory

HTML:
Canon has posted a great article with some facts you may not know about making Canon’s L lenses at the Utsunomiya factory in Japan.

Below are the facts covered in the article, and I’ll play spoiler on number 8…. it’s telephoto lenses like the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II.

Japanese engineering is everywhere

Lens experts can hear faults

Lens polishing tools are made with diamonds

Aspherical lenses are made by melting glass

Sci-fi robots roam the factory

Lens polishing machines self-correct

Lens measurements are incredibly precise

The hardest lens to make is…

The innovation never ends

Canon lenses could (probably) cover half the world

Number 2 is probably the most interesting fact that I didn’t know.

While much of the lens manufacturing process is automated, expert craftsmen, called Takumi, play an important role in lens creation. Toshi Saito, one of Canon’s lens Takumis, brings over 25 years of experience, skill and even his senses to the role. “When the lens is touching the diamond plate I know what sound it should make, so when it’s slightly off, I can detect it with my hearing,” he says.

Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Series Lens to be Priced at €1,999?

HTML:
Photo Rumors is reporting that a store in Lithuania has the yet-to-ship Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Series lens priced at €1,999, which converts roughly to $2400 USD. USA pricing has yet to be announced by Sigma, but it’s highly likely that this will be the most expensive Art series lens in the Sigma lineup.

Sigma announced the development of the lens back in February ahead of CP+.

Sigma is currently running an instant rebate program on their Art series lenses, you can see which lenses qualify here.

Patent: Quad Pixel AF and a Hybrd DSLR

HTML:
Now this is a pretty interesting patent uncovered by Canon News. who calls it “an intense patent”, and understanding all of the nuances of it is quite difficult.

Firstly, the patent deals with multiple parallax images for computational photography, and it clearly shows Quad Pixel AF sensors and the problems that 4 composite images have on the final image.

Secondly, the example diagram clearly shows a DSLR with an EVF.

Canon News has previously uncovered 3 other patents that mention Quad Pixel AF, you can see them here, here and here.

...removal of cross-threaded uv filter stuck on Canon EF 17-40 f4 lens

I am going through many of my EF lenses to see how well they 'work' when connected to an M6 via an EF-EFM adapter.

A lens I only use occasionally (because the 'killer app' of the M-series--the 11-22 EF-M lens, yields great wide-angle images with the M) is the Canon EF 17-40 f4 lens; and before testing it with the M6 I attempted to remove the uv filter which has resided on the lens for at least a couple of years.

Sadly, the filter could not be removed; using Mr. Google's suggestions and trying jar top removal tools, rubber bands and leather shoelace,s and even a bit of cold weather did not enable the removal of the filter from the lens.

An individual at the bottom of this link (https://www.photo.net/discuss/threads/cross-threaded-lens-filter.438251/) described how he removed a filter that had been cross-threaded to a lens. His way worked for me, too...after I figured out that was my problem.

I took a look at the 17-40, at sure enough, the 77mm filter was on a bit crooked. With the aid of a kind of scalpel-like tool that has come in handy for taking (prying) apart watches, phones, toys and laptops, I was able to wedge the scalpel into the tiny crack between the filter and the lens...and then carefully slide it toward the other side of the lens, where there was virtually no space at all. Just a bit of wiggling...and a tiny snap (!) was heard...and easily removal of the uv filter was accomplished.

...this post is hopefully an unneeded tip for CR readers--you've helped me plenty.

Patent: In Camera Focus Stacking and Image Stabilization

HTML:
Here’s an interesting patent from Canon uncovered by Canon News.

This application details in camera focus stacking and the effect of image stabilization during the multiple exposures required to do the stacking. The area of concern for R&D is how to deal with the possibility of the plane of focus shifting because of camera shake, and how to calculate the amount of shift during various degrees of camera shake.

In camera focus stacking could be a great feature for Canon shooters.

Patent: More Diffractive Optics Supertelephoto Formulas

HTML:
Canon News has uncovered another diffractive optic patent for supertelephoto optical formulas has shown up at the USPTO.

This patent covers the following:

EF 200mm f/2

EF 400mm f/2.8

EF 800mm f/5.6

Canon continues to work away at more and more diffractive optics development, but we’re still waiting to see new products come to market. The last DO lens released by Canon was back in 2014 when they announced the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II.

Official 2 Card slots guy

I used to be of the opinion 1 CF card slot is enough. Recently had a corrupt card and lost valuable data. From now on:
1. I will work only with cameras with 2 slots.
2. I will record on both cards simultaneously.

Just thought I would share this and recommend to all this method.

Am really hoping 1dx3 will have 2 Cfast slots. If it does I will be the first to pre order.

AI Servo AF not reliable in 5D4

Dear all,

I have had an intense weekend shooting children's hats for my wifes company.

I use BBF with AI servo to be able to follow the running little beauties. For the first time I have a relatively lower rate of critically sharp images (70-200 2.8 II IS), although working faster than 1/200 and ~ at least 4.0

The "non-keepers" happen also with more or less static subjects and I have no real idea why.

Nevertheless I noticed, that very subtle movements seem not to be detected/followed by the AI Servo. Has anyone encountered a similar behaviour? Will try to go back to <One Shot> to see, if this brings up my rate of keepers in these situations.

Sending the body to CPS is no option, as we have to finalise the shooting befor May 25th.

Second option of cause can be rent, but so far we do get the keepers needed and budget is scarce.

Thanks for any help - as always highly apprechiated

Cheers
Olaf

Nikon Confirms New Mirrorless System Coming in Early 2019, What About Canon?

HTML:
A Nikon representative confirmed that their new mirrorless system will be coming by spring of 2019 (video here). We’ll assume this new mirrorless system is going to be full frame, and perhaps an APS-C little brother as well.

So what about Canon?

We know there are various bodies in testing and at various stages of development, though we’re pretty confident that a hard date for an announcement has not been determined as of yet. It’s speculated around the web that both Nikon and Canon will make some kind of announcement for a full frame mirrorless camera at Photokina in September.

If Nikon is saying their new system will be coming some time in early 2019, I don’t think they’ll be doing an official product announcement at Photokina, and it’s more likely we’ll get some kind of a “development” announcement. I think there’s a high probability Canon does a similar thing at Photokina. I will say however, we’e never been told about a “development announcement” before they happen. People don’t like announcements and then having to wait 6 months to buy the product, we’ve seen that in the past with Canon and it’s not good for anyone.

I don’t think it matters to Canon or Nikon who is first out of the gate with a full frame mirrorless camera. Both companies obviously have a very loyal customer base and both will be going right at Sony. If both companies make comparable products to Sony feature-set wise, they’ll both easily take a large chunk full frame mirrorless marketshare rather quickly. The one caveat to that will be how F and EF mount lenses fit into the picture.

Lots more to come…

CIPA Global Camera Sales Numbers for March 2018 Released

HTML:

CIPA has released the camera shipment numbers for March 2018 today and there are some interesting things going on with ILC’s.

Canon News has done their usual great breakdown of the numbers, so I don’t really need to do the same thing.

From Canon News:

….With the Kumamoto earthquake finally in the past, we see that the shipments overall for this month is almost that of the year past and maintain a little consistency from month to month at around 95% of last year’s March shipments. Japan for the first time ever has shipped more Mirrorless than DSLR’s which is an interesting notable that will have to be watched in the coming months ahead.

….DSLR’s continue to ship less, thereby raising the mirrorless market share. This month instead of looking at percentages, we’re going to look at units, where it shows a far more startling trend for DSLR’s over the last 4 or so years than it does if you looked at percentages of market.

….In summary, for this month we are seeing a more consistent picture of shipments, marginal increases to mirrorless and the continued slow decline in DSLR shipments. The interesting takeaway is that when you see a camera released, and you are puzzled to why on earth the company released it, imagine how it may fit into the different markets, whether it be for DSLR’s or for Mirrorless.

Industry News: Phase One Announces 100mp iXM 100 for UAV Use

HTML:

Launches iXM Metric Cameras and Motorized Lenses

COPENHAGEN, April 30, 2018 ― Phase One Industrial today launched the iXM series: a breakthrough aerial camera platform driven by the world’s fastest medium-format imaging sensor. Engineered for UAV-imaging missions, the iXM 100MP is a high-productivity metric camera with a range of high-resolution lenses. The iXM is ready for integration with a wide range of UAV platforms, including Phase One’s DJI Matrice 600 Pro solution.

The iXM 100MP metric camera incorporates the first medium-format sensor with backside-illumination technology, enabling high light sensitivity and extended dynamic range. Fast, highly responsive, robust, and weatherproof (IP53 compliant), the iXM 100MP delivers superior quality aerial imaging and flexible operation to satisfy diverse mapping, surveying, and inspection applications.

Also today, Phase One announced four new specially developed RSM lenses – with focal lengths ranging from 35mm to 150mm – to seamlessly fit the new sensor’s 3.76μm pixel size and 33×44 mm frame size, ensuring image sharpness across the entire FOV. The lenses are available with either fixed-focus or motorized-focus functionality.

The fixed-focus 35mm and 80mm lenses provide superior image radiometric quality, high ground resolution, and large coverage – perfect for surveying applications.

The motorized-focus 80mm and 150mm lenses are ideal for a wide range of inspection applications, including electricity poles, wind turbines, bridges, and other private-sector or government structures.

Motorized-focused lenses, having no external moving parts, enable a number of new uses for inspection applications where the focusing distance can be predefined based on flight planning, or by the operator, using a wireless remote control. With the motorized lens, the camera captures sharp and highly detailed images of multi-distance or 3D objects.

The cameras’ RSM lenses incorporate a new leaf-shutter technology, which supports 3 fps capture – with a speed of 1/2500 sec – while guaranteeing 500,000 actuations. The lenses are thermally stable to ensure consistent focus over a wide range of temperatures and flight altitudes. With optics designed to exploit the full benefits of the new sensor technology, the lenses provide with greater productivity, flexibility, and reliability, offering superb image quality.

The new iXM platform adds XQD high-speed storage technology to handle the sensor’s extremely fast frame rate. Also on all cameras, HDMI output from actual exposure provides UAV operators simple and outage-free feedback of actual view, exposures, and camera status in overlays. In addition, the new platform includes USB-C and 10G Ethernet for versatility of connectivity to large UAVs and aircraft.

TCSTV’s Chris and Jordan Hired By DPReview (Amazon)

https://www.dpreview.com/site-news/4006081868/chris-and-jordan-of-camera-store-tv-are-coming-to-dpreview

And somehow it only took four comments on the subject to get banned from commenting on DPR articles.

This was my last comment:
“If Chris and Jordan are happier here than running retail then it’s just good for them, and their slant on the industry already leaned heavily in the same direction as DPR so it’s a natural fit.
Worries of critical independance are valid but maybe that’s arguing semantics a bit when virtually every Youtube reviewer has a hard on for Sony right now.”

Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 ART Review + Comparisons | Dustin

I’ve released my content on the Sigma 14-24 ART today, which I consider to be perhaps Sigma’s finest work yet. Very few flaws that I could see, and outstanding results when paired with either my 5D Mark IV or Sony a7R3.

Full body portraits on the street - 50mm f/1.2L or 85mm f/1.4L IS

Hi,

I am currently developing a project to make full body portraits of workers on the street. I would like to make portraits with huge bokeh in order to isolate the worker from the street, albeit showing a litte context. Which lens would you choose, the 50mm f/1.2L or the 85mm f/1.4L IS? I am worried about the working distance necessary for the 85mm, however, I am afraid to buy an old lens as the 50mm and then see its next version released as soon as I have bought the older version. Unfortunately, renting theses lenses is not an option in my city.

Yours sincerely,
Antonio L
