14-bit vs 12-bit: How does it affect IQ?

As I understand the math, a 14-bit image has four times the data of a 12-bit image. My understanding has been that this extra data provides additional resolution which allows for more aggressive pushing and pulling of shadows and highlights. However, I recently saw a thread about the R5 where the OP was suggesting that a 14-bit image has a wider dynamic range than a 12-bit image. This doesn't sound correct to me. A sensor captures what it captures. Well capacity is well capacity. But then again, I'm not an EE and I don't want to Dunning-Kruger my way through the thread. How should I understand the benefits of those extra 2 bits?

Sigma 18-50 2.8 for EOS R. now available

Managed to buy myself the lens at Tokiwa-camera in Osaka.

Never have been treated better as a customer. Lens was sold for 54.000 Yen as duty free with int. Warranty.

I Had No Time for intensive Test, but the lens feels welll ballanced.
Only complain from my Side:
1. Zoom and Focus are switched compared to Canon.
2. Lens ist giving some resistance when it gets mounted

Will Post some Samples when I have time

What do you think will be in the C70 Mark II?

My son is in film school and currently has a C70, along with an RF 28-70/2 and a 24-105/2.8 with zoom motor.

He's currently leaning towards putting his funds this year towards the rumored 70-200/2.8 Z, but when I mentioned that there's a rumored C70 Mark II that will be announced towards the end of the year, he wondered out loud how Canon would improve it.

Realistically, what improvements do you think the C70 II will have? My best guess is improved dynamic range, but I'm not a video shooter so I wouldn't really know.

Delkin Black vs Delkin Power 4.0 Buffer Test

Delkin Black vs Delkin Power 4.0

Unscientific Buffer Test (Images Taken)

Setup: EOS R3 / H+ / RAW + LJPG
  • Delkin Black 106
  • Delkin Power 4 272
I will note that Black never hit the buffer in H RAW (1000+ images).

With an Angelbird AV PRO v60 SDXC sequential writing, the buffer hit at 120 (H+ RAW). This will probably matter more with the EOS R1 and the dual CFe slots for those that do crazy bursts.

I don't yet have a USB4 card reader to test an image dump (ordered). I do have the ASUS USB4 PCie card.

Disclosure: Delkin Devices sent the cards to me for no cost.
