The RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z won’t be the last RF PowerZoom lens

Canon announced the RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z last week with a lot of fanfare. With that lens came two PowerZoom accessories, the PZ-E2 and PZ-E2B. The latter utilizes the 20pin port with allows it to work with compatible Canon cinema and broadcast accessories. Over the weekend we were told that the RF 24-105mm

RF 800mm f/11 vs RF 100-500mm + 1.4xTC @ 700mm

According to the Canon MTF charts the RF 800mm f/11 and RF 100-500mm + 1.4xTC @ 700mm are nearly identical. This means the 800mm should outresolve the 700mm because of the extra 100mm. I find this with my copies. Others have reported the opposite. It could be that I have a poorer copy of the 1.4x (and I have never been that happy with it) and a good copy of the 800/11. Others might have vice versa. So, I am interested in others experiences.

Canon RF 100-500 4.5-7.1 L or old EF 400 5.6L?

Hello,

Anyone has some EF 400 mm f5.6L vs RF 100-500 4.5-7.1 L photo bokeh samples?

I really don't care about IS, zoom, etc. I just care about bokeh because 400mm f5.6L is already an awesome lens but I find bokeh a little busy. Is RF lens at 400-500 the same? I would LOVE to see the differences to know if I should upgrade or not (it's expensive!!).

The only reason to me is if bokeh is more creamy.

Any help?

Lens design: why constant apertures?

Why are high end lenses constant aperture? Isn't the max aperture a limitation of the long end due to the size of the lens entrance pupil? Couldn't these lenses have even bigger apertures at the wide end with no increase in size?

What I'm wondering is: what would the physical difference between a 70-200 f2.8 and a hypothetical 70-200 f2.0-2.8 be? Shouldn't those come out at the same physical size? Or say a 24-105 f4 vs a hypothetical 24-105 f2.8-4?

Perhaps someone in physics and lens design has a good answer.

Opinion: The USB-C DSLR problem isn’t as bad as you think

I chose to put this as an opinion because I’m not a lawyer, and while my background is in engineering, we are talking about a rather convoluted subject matter. That really can only be answered accurately by lawyers familiar with the legislation. We won’t know for sure until after December 28th, but in my opinion,

A look at the Canon RF 24-105 F2.8L IS USM Z MTF

The Canon RF 24-105 F2.8L jumped into the limelight with the latest announcement. This lens may not be for you. It’s big, it’s heavy, and pricey and Canon really wants this lens primarily for the cinema cameras. From all reports it’s not fully parfocal (which means the focus will change as you zoom), but it’s

The Trinity is Dead, Long Live the Trinity!

I don't really see the point of f/2.8 trinity any more.

1) We don't need it for viewfinder brightness.

2) We don't need it for autofocus. (In the 90s and even I think the EOS-1Ds MkI MkII MkIII, only the center AF point worked at smaller then f/2.8.)

3) We don't need it to avoid grain/noise or to freeze motion on moving subjects. (Current sensors are fantastically low-noise at high ISO.)

4) We don't need it to shoot still subjects that would otherwise require a tripod (50/1.8 on R5 shoots about as well at 1/2 sec as at any speed above 1/30)

5) We don't need it to make subjects pop from backgrounds. (It used to be that focus was never great, lenses weren't so high resolution, film was grainy, exposures were blurred by camera shake, and so even the SUBJECT was pretty blurry. Because of those factors, we didn't use images in big sizes. In order to make the background visibly yet blurrier at this low print size, f/2.8 sometimes helped to make the subject stand out. But now, we prepare every shot even for our personal social media to be 15" (38cm) wide. The sensors are practically noiseless. The AF is utterly nailed to the subject eyes. Lenses can do 50lp/mm or better at very high contrast. Sensors are noise-free up to ISO 4000+. IBIS saves us with camera shake. The subject is absolutely clear as a bell and even f/4 (wider shots) or 72mm aperture (tele) gives us more pop at these large image sizes than we ever got at f/2.8 in the old days.

------------

In reaction to the new 24-105/2.8, and the nice 15-300mm f/2.8 trinity it creates: I do get the utility of 24-105. For me I've been shooting 24-105/4 instead of 24-70/2.8 pretty much exclusively for 15 years now, despite shooting 24-70/2.8s since they were 28-70s... 24-105 is a a great shooting range. I even used the RF24-105 almost exclusively on my R despite having a half-dozen EF lenses in the cupboard.

I just don't see the need for f/2.8 for it though.

The EF MkI 24-105/4 was a good size but soft. The EF MkII was bigger and better IQ. I'd summarize the RF MkI as being the EF MkI size with EF MkII image quality. I'd like to see them make a higher image quality RF MkII, even if substantially bigger and more expensive, and I'd buy it instantly.

I do love the big apertures too like the 135/1.8 and would order a 35/1.0 or 35/1.2 instantly, for special projects, but I don't need f-stop bigger than f/4 or aperture greater than 72mm in general. f/4 and 72mm do everything I need to. For me the big question is: if you need more than f/4, and I agree such cases arise, how can f/2.8 be enough? If I really want to blur backgrounds or something, then I want not f/2.8 but f/1.4 or bigger.

The first review of the Canon RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM is here

Kakakumag.com has published their review of the Canon RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM that was announced earlier this month. The review is in Japanese, but Google Translate works just fine. A big point of the review notes the “incredible” resolving power of the lens at 10mm. Corner performance, even wide open looks extremely good for

Looking for 600m lens for wildlife videography

Hi, all. As the title says, I'm looking for a 600mm lens for some wildlife videography here in Japan. something that doesn't break the bank as I'm just dipping my toes in this field and will probably just use it to shoot videos for a YouTube channel, photos for social media, etc.

I spend so much of my free time watching wildlife around Japan and I run an arts promotion company with a video production arm so I thought it made sense to combine the two. I'll probably end up deeply regretting taking my work home with me, so to speak, but that's a problem for tomorrow.

I'm thinking of using it with a spare Canon C70 (s35 sensor) and an EF to RF speed booster for that extra stop of light as the EF 600/4 is well out of the budget for this personal project. I might also use it with an R5 for stills.

I was looking at the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Canon EF, but I can't seem to find any in stock or second hand.

Any other recommendations or experience with the Sigma? Should I be looking for something different? Thanks in advance!

A bit more information on the upcoming RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS

Canon will officially announced the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS on November 2, 2023. This lens seems to be generating a lot of positive hype. There are still some unknowns about the lens, but we only have to wait a few more days for the launch. The Camera Insider is reporting that it’s definitely not an

Potential focus issues with AI Servo.......any suggesitons?

Hi Cannonites, I'm having a couple of issues with my auto focus when shooting sports. Heres the stats
5d Mk4
70-200 f2.8 IS
F4.5 (for depth of field)
ISO 6400 or higher
1/1000th second
AI Servo single point
Back button focus
High speed drive mode
The majority of the images are fine but every now and then I get a few different issues.
Sometimes the focus point locks on and registers (using light room plugin to confirm in post) but yet the subject is not in focus, in fact nothing in the image is in focus, yet the camera registers a focus point has been achieved.
Other times the subjects face is wildly out of focus and their legs are in focus, when they're in the same focal plane.
Any tips on trying to resolve or am I always going to have to consign a % of images as waste?
Thanks
