TTArtisans launches the RF 500mm f/6.3

Chinese manufacturer TTArtisan has launched a 500mm f/6.3 supertelephoto for the RF mount and others. The lens is manual focus, but looks to have good optical performance for certain types of photography. This is not a mirror lens, which is the usual design for inexpensive supertelephoto lenses. The best part? The TTArtisan 500mm f/6.3 comes

"Power related problems" with the LP-EL battery for my EL-5

Hi everyone. It’s been a while. I’m curious to know if anyone else has experienced a similar issue as me? In sum, my LP-EL battery for my EL-5 is simply not holding its charge while in “storage”. My flash is less than two months old (55 days to be exact), and by storage, I mean less than 24-hours between speedlite off and on usage.

Situation details:

Step 1: My LP-EL battery becomes empty after a fun day of using it. When the flash is working, I've been happy with it. :)

Step 2: Charge LP-EL battery with LC-E6 charger — that did not come with the product, and is a detail that's become hard for me to forget being an R3 user. ;)

Step 3: Place fully charged LP-EL battery in flash.

Step 4: Turn on flash, battery appears fully charged.

Step 5: Turn off flash, store away for the night, so that I'm ready for tomorrow.

Step 6: Next morning, turn on flash, no power in battery. :(

Step 7 (optional): Panic, because I only have the one battery my flash came with, and photoshot starts in less than an hour.

Step 8 (non-optional): Order a second battery. :giggle:

Step 9: Reach out to my friends on Canon Rumors for insights.

But seriously, this has now happened to me three times in the past week.
On page 28 of the “Speedlite EL-5 Advanced User Guide” (CT2-D256-A) there are several statements that have just caught my concern. Canon notes:

  • Charge on the day of use, or the day before. Batteries gradually lose their charge while in storage.”
  • When the Speedlite is not in use, remove the battery. If the battery is left in the Speedlite over extended periods, the trace amount of current that continues to flow may lead to over-discharge and reduce the life of the battery […] Note that storing the battery when it is fully charged may reduce its performance.”
Ok, with reasonableness, I understand (and respect) the notion that all batteries “gradually” discharge over time, but in my case, we’re talking a complete discharge in less than 24-hours (and yes, the flash is turned off). And while I’m guilty of not removing the battery when the speedlite is not in use over night, with reasonableness, I would not consider 24-hours an “extended period of time”. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I'm really hoping I just have a defective battery, and that this is something Canon will replace. I need to check the warranty info. But if the above instructions need to be treated religiously (charge on the day of use), that's just nuts. For what it's worth, I never had this kind of rapid discharge issue with any of my four 600 EX-RTs and PowerEx rechargeable batteries (some of which lasted years, and never once did I remove them nightly). Your thoughts and experiences welcome.

Canon Patent Application: Fast APS-C Primes

In this patent application (2023-130885), Canon lists quite a few primes with a significant ingress, but also more notably a smaller image circle than what would normally be used for APS-C. For Canon APS-C, that’s 13.66mm, whereas all these lenses have 12.50mm. Super-35 just in case anyone is thinking that is around 14.2mm so they

RF 85 F1.2 & RF 24-70 F2.8 Autofocus Noise - This Can't Be Normal...

Hi, I recently purchased a R6MKII and a RF 24-70 F2.8 and RF 85 F1.2 lens. I think they're fantastic photography tools. However, when using them for video, I'm very surprised at how insanely loud the autofocus is.

I tested the autofocus noise of both lenses with the built in mic of the Canon R6MKII as well as the Sennheiser MKE 400, both indoors and outdoors, using several different settings.

RF 85 F1.2 Autofocus Audio Test Here -

RF 24-70 F2.8 Autofocus Audio Test Here -

Listening Volume:
No audio levels were adjusted in post so adjust your computer/phone volume accordingly. I suggest listening as loud as possible and reducing the volume as needed.

Backstory:
I recently switched from Sony. I had an A7III with a 24-70 G-Master, a Tamron 28-75 and a Samyang 85 1.4. All of these were totally silent while focusing and shooting video, even with the built-in Sony mic.

The only way reduce the autofocus noise is to lower the camera gain and external mic gain, so everything is barely audible (pointless, and the AF noise will just increase if you raise the levels in post) or jack up the camera gain and set the external mic to low (totally backwards and introduces a crazy noise floor hiss).

I love the look of RF lenses. Love the functionality. Love the image quality, but Canon really needs to do something about the autofocus noise going forward (and should have already).

Shooting concerts, sports or street probably isn't a problem but shooting in any type of quiet environment (nature, church, gallery, etc) even with a shotgun mic is surprisingly problematic.

Before Losing Your Minds:
I realize you can manually focus. That's not really the point.
I realize you can take it off Servo AF (it still makes the same noise when you do choose to focus)
I realize you can get off camera mics (lavs, etc) but again, that's not really the point.
It’s not IBIS.

I'm a professional photographer - https://www.robharrandphotography.com, but there is no denying video is equally, if not more important to a lot of people in 2023 and I think Canon needs to up their game in this department.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Did I get lemons?

Much appreciated.

Rob.

IS Mode for 70-200 f2.8 Models

I primarily shoot sports and every now and then people mention the two IS modes for most of Canon's telephoto lenses like this. Which mode is actually for sports? I know mode 1 says it corrects for all directions, but then says its for still subjects. And mode two says for panning directions. What do sports shooters use? I've always left it on Mode 1 out of the box but I'm just curious.

Canon Patent Applications: Internal Camera ND filter

One of the main complaints about using ultra-fast lenses is that you can’t use the lenses easily wide open in bright sunlight. This is especially true when it comes to video and the use of more limited shutter speeds. In this series of patent applications, Canon is discussing adding a mechanically actuated ND filter internally
