ef 70-200 2.8 L IS mk II vs mk III

Hi all :)
I am thinking to buy ef 70-200 2.8 L IS, but I am not sure which one - mkII or mkIII. I will buy used but different in price is still huge. I will use this lens on street for fashion and also in studio. On YouTube I saw below video, about glass which was used in mk III and I am impress with this feature - please see attached. Shooting against light source you can still catch subject. Is it true? Can anyone who know both lenses help me, please? Is it useful and worth another 500 pounds? This what I am talking about is in 1 min 10 sec in below video.
Thank you and have a lovely day :)
Jacek

Can a Canon r5/r6 be bricked

I accidentally pressed a button during my firmware update for my canon r5 and it froze (or at least it seemed like it did). So then I slightly panicked and tried to power off, which didn't work. Ultimately since nothing happened I pulled the battery, and it seems to be fine. Is my Camera alright or should I be worried?

I pulled it right from the beginning and it did have a slow start. Overall, It seems like it is working fine after I tried updating again. Fortunately, it did not brick and it updated to the corrected firmware.

Is there something I should look out for if it is acting weird?

Or would restarting the whole camera be a viable option?

Tilt/shift lens use webinar - edited recording now available

In February I mentioned the webinar about tilt/shift lenses and their use (mostly Canon!) I was doing

Given the timings (aimed at a UK audience) I had quite a lot of people miss it.

I've been sent a recording which I've edited, added supplemental pictures, and generally cleaned up from the live recording.
I've now been able to publish this on YouTube (still 51 mins long though!)

I hope it's of some interest - great fun to do, so if anyone wants a podcast contribution or other related stuff, just let me know. I have to thank BenQ in the UK for twisting my arm into doing it...

Shoulder strap for EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM II (LZ1326)

I got a good deal on the lens with one small issue. The lens and case are in mint condition but the owner couldn't find the shoulder strap for the case. I can use the strap from my RF 100-500 for now but I want to replace it. I'd prefer to have the OEM strap but don't want to buy a replacement case for it. Has anyone had luck finding these or can recommend a good aftermarket shoulder strap for the case?

Raven by FusionTLC - New PocketWizard trigger

Raven by FusionTLC Trigger

I am curious what other's thoughts are on this new PocketWizard product. Because of the infrequency with which I use my lights, I have opted not to upgrade my Alienbees up to now. I have both PocketWizard and Godox triggers. I originally went with PW because of the AC9 units that let me adjust the power of my ABs remotely. But some of the other promises of the PW (the HyperSync capability in particular) have left me a bit soured on and disappointed by PW. I never could get their HyperSync feature to work. Add to that the poor support and lack of compatibility from camera to camera when it comes to Canon, I am very wary of investing more money in the PW system.

Canon Australia halting sales of the Canon EOS R5C

In an email sent to us (thank you), we received an email that Canon Australia has sent out stating that Canon Inc has asked them to halt sales of the Canon EOS R5C.
The email alludes that this is happening because of some issue with the camera.  They mention in the email “I’d like to reassure you that there are no health and safety issues with the camera however, we want to ensure that the product is of the highest standard from a quality perspective.”
We are not aware of any current issues with the R5C, but it could be something that Canon has caught during the initial manufacturing run of the camera, and perhaps some serious manufacturing defect was discovered.  Alternatively, this could be simply an email suspending sales because of supply chain issues, but Canon would normally state this in the email because that actually shows there is a positive demand for the camera.  The R5C was due to...

Canon EOS R5 Firmware v1.5.2

Saw a post on FB that Canon Malaysia had posted Firmware version 1.5.2 for the R5.

I thought the link was bogus, so I searched for Canon Malaysia, went to the official site and found it there.

Edit: I searched Canon USA, Canada and UK, but did not find 1.5.2 anywhere else.

Canon Applies for 135mm f/2 Patent

It was published only today, but Canon submitted its 135mm f/2 lens design (Japanese) back in September 2020. Four versions are shown, ranging from 11 elements to 14 elements.
The designs appear to sport pretty good image quality, going by the theoretical, calculated “sea grass” graphs that appear in Japanese lens design patents. A trip back to Canon’s most recent 135mm f/2 patent (2018) shows that these new ones compare favorably.
[Tip to lens geeks: Bill Claff’s Photonstophotos.net site incorporates a long list of lenses that he’s matched up with their corresponding patents, along with a mesmerizing ray tracing application that shows how light interacts with the patent design elements. Very handy.]

Canon Applies to Patent Drone Gimbal

It was about five years ago that Canon’s first camera drone efforts came to light with the PD6E2000-AW-CJ1. The >$20,000 drone appeared to be targeted to the security market rather than professional (nevermind consumer) photographers.  And then the product – really a drone made by Prodrone, one of Canon’s side investments – quietly disappeared.
Now we see from a patent application that Canon continues to work on the underlying systems technology, this one involving a gimbal for a small camera on a quadcopter that allows for two-axis freedom of movement while maintaining electronic connections. This invention is scaled to serve a consumer-level camera, such as those small-sensor cameras already used on most drones.
The patent’s inventor, Shinji Obana, has been responsible for...

Gear advice for preschool class photos - backdrop support, backdrop, and lighting

Hi photographers! I need some quick gear advice for a backdrop system for next month… and favorite neutral backdrops. I mainly do outdoor portraits and events, but will be taking preschool “class pictures” next month!

1. 100+ little kids
2. 5-10 classes of groups 10-15 small kids with there teachers

What would you bring?

I have a choice of being in a basement with a little step stage, or in a window-lit white-wall room. I’ll probably pick the naturally lit space, because that’s where I’m comfortable.

What backdrop system would you bring?

I’m not that interested in green screening anything, but would love a neutral/natural background and/or something super glam sparkle for an option.

Also: It probably wouldn’t be bad to have one or two large soft lights that recycle faster than my speed lights. As I mostly do events and outdoor portraits (especially during COVID), I have three canon speed lights and some more portable stands… but this will be a more stationary setup, so light system recommendations welcome as well… especially if you think they’ll be both more useful than the speed lights and practical later down the road in a home studio I want to build.

(I think almost everything will be shot with the 28-70 f/2 on an R5. I’ll have an EF 16-35 iii and an RF 85 1.2 to back me up for groups and singles if need be... but the 28-70 might be the one!)

Can someone bring me up to speed on EF vs RF lenses?

Hi, long time member but I've been busy with http://mcvoy.com/lm/boat and not really paying attention to photography.

I mostly don't care because I have pretty much all the EF glass I want, but what is up with all the EF lenses being discontinued? I get that RF is all the rage (I don't get why at all, they don't seem that much smaller, just a different mount, what's the point?). Does that mean Canon is basically done with the EF/EF-S mount? That seems like a fairly big deal.

EOS R6 and the 600EX-II

I have had the R6 for several months and admit I have been using only Natural Light. But I finally had a need to use my flash. But when I attached it, the flash would not fire.
it was only later, that I discovered later that I was in electronic shutter mode. I assume its a inability for the flash to keep up with the shutter.
Should'nt the camera auto switch to Mechanical mode when flash is attached?

Does the EL-1 work in Electronic mode?

R5 with EF lenses

I am thinking of moving over to the R5 from my 5DIV/7D2. With a slew of L lenses in the cupboard, this is a big move and one of the issues is performance of the EF lenses on the R5 body.
I have read that the maximum frame rate using EF lenses on the R5 is 6 fps but other people are reporting 9 fps. Does anyone have any experience/comment on this?

Given that my main wildlife interest is birds in flight, along some sports, the key lenses where fps could be an issue would be the 100-400(ii), and the 400 DO f4 (ii) so replacing these lenses would be the big financial hit. If the R5 performs well enough (given that the limitations are me and not the gear) I may even sell the 1Dx(ii).
Trying to second guess the impact of Brexit, rising fuel costs and any shenanigans the Russians get up to is making my finger a bit twitchy to sort it out before the excreta really hits the fan.
Any advice will be welcomed.

By the way - does anyone know why frame rate on the EF lenses is reduced? It seems odd to me.

Canon Appears To Plan 10% RF Lens Price Hike in Japan

A new PDF list of increased lens prices has been loaded onto the Canon Japan website, but has not yet been publicly linked. Digicame-info.com reported on the find, attributed to a forum post it believes to be “the usual person,” a reference it previously used for the author of the now-defunct Nokishita leak feed.
The prices show increases of about 10 percent across the RF lens range, if this list were to become official Canon pricing. It should be noted that the Japanese Yen has fallen about 7 percent over the past year versus the dollar, so this pricing could be in part an “evening up” of prices being charged elsewhere.

Canon Patent Application: Shutter that minimizes shutter shock

As discovered by CanonNews, this is an interesting patent application. Shutter shock is a condition that mirrorless cameras are prone to have if they have a mechanical shutter, especially if they also have IBIS.
Canon in this patent application talks about a floating shutter mechanism that would reduce or even eliminate shutter shock.

A prior patent application may have worked;
[In patent application] an image pickup device that holds a shutter in a floating state so as to be movable only in the traveling direction of the shutter blade by using a spring, and absorbs vibration due to the traveling of the shutter blade.
However, Canon found that approach to be inaccurate and this in this case describes a mechanism that uses electromagnets to move the shutter instead which reduces the amount of vibration caused by the assembly. (Thanks for the clarification – I’ll blame it on 60 hours’...

Short Macro film, 5D Mark III with reversed Zeiss Otus lenses

Hi!

I have created a short film using (reversed) Zeiss Otus lenses and a 5D Mark III (magic Lantern). Enjoy, and please let me know your thoughts.

Background:

Production: Zero Landscape
Directed and Written: Martijn Rijnberg
Music: Vincent Fournier-Boisvert

“As an assignment for the parents, our daycare asked us to collect all objects that were important for our 3-year old son during the summer holiday and put them in a shoebox. These so-called summer boxes were used as an aid for the children to help them to vividly relate in the group about their experiences during the summer. I was thinking about a way to bring this box of objects alive in a film and to find a way to have the audience feel the emotions my son had during his holiday. As this idea grew, I contacted musician Vincent Fournier-Boisvert and asked if I could use his beautiful song ‘Un Mois de Bois Mort’ of the album ‘Mon Coeur est une Arme’ for this purpose. Being a side project, I have filmed this in a year or so, picking it up once in a while. It took patience creating the macro shots and seeing how the footage could be best combined with Vincents song. I loved to do the project, as I could do some of the stuff with my son, and it was always nice to see how the film slowly grew.”
