Hi everyone,

5 weeks ago I got my R6 and I’ve been taking pictures and videos on a regular basis since then using 2 brand new Lexar professional 2000x uhs-II cards I got with the camera.

I had no problems until 2 days ago when the camera started to tell me that my card is too slow for 4k 24p or simply that it can’t record on the card in slot one or two. It tells me to format the card in camera and/or to take the card out and put it back in which I both did numerous times. It then works again for 2min or 30min or not at all until one of the error messages shows up again. Totally random and it can even happen when taking pictures (not the „too slow“ message but the „can’t record on card in slot 1) It happens with both cards whether I have both in the camera or one by one. I everything.

Unfortunately I only have those two uhs-II cards. They both work flawlessly when I put them in my PC, no files were ever corrupted, they are all there.

Could it be the case that both cards suddenly are slower or broke after 5 weeks and not much use or is this a camera problem?

The R6 is on the latest firmware.

The R5/R6 bodies add some complexity to taking photos. Here's an example of what I thought was a glitch but turned out to be a setting:

Usually I use Servo AF, probably 90% of the time, and I also use Spot Metering about that often. Occasionally, say for landscape on a tripod, I'll go with One Shot and Evaluative. I seemed to have trouble with my exposure in that combination, and I thought it was a glitch, or that I was doing something wrong. It was kind of on the back-burner of things to check into.

Then I came across this on page 773 in the AUG for the R6, something that I don't remember the 5DIV having at all:



This default setting produced unexpected exposure behavior when I was auto-focusing. But, as it was rare and fleeting, I didn't get right on it. Notice how specific this feature is! It only works in One-Shot AF!

This is one example. I've had some others but was surprised enough by this one to post about it.

Another was mentioned in a recent thread started by wyotex43n, asking why his/her histogram disappeared after an update. Turns out that Exposure Simulation must be enabled for the histogram to display in the EVF. It's these kind of specifically conditional new features that can make one wonder if there is a glitch...

Any other examples?

On my R5 with the latest firmware update when I toggle through the Screen information options I seem to be missing the screen that overlays the histogram on the image. This is missing in both the viewfinder and the screen view. I have all the boxes checked in the menu for both the VF and the Screen.
Anyone else having this issue? Is there some other setting I am missing.

Canon officially announced their new flagship Speedlite, the EL-1 back in October, and it’s still scheduled to begin shipping in February.
For the folks that can’t deal with the eye-watering $1099USD price tag, fret not, a more affordable version is coming in 2021.
I have been told that Canon will likely announce a Speedlite EL-10 in the 2nd half of 2021.
No specifications were given, but I think it would pretty easy to figure out what the EL-10 will be. One interesting note from the source is that the EL-10 will also use an optional rechargeable battery.

So my R5 is on the way...

I've been reading all the threads I can here and elsewhere about shutter shock and when to use mechanical shutter, EFCS, and ES.

It looks like that for shooting landscapes on a tripod, recommended setup is IS off, electronic first curtain.

I have read that using ES decreases both bit depth and DR.

Is this true for both EFCS and full ES, or just full ES?

I was wondering if anyone could sum up the bottom line about his topic.

I just got a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art for my R6. I noticed when shooting with it my camera's shutter sounds different, slower almost. But as far as I can tell it's working fine. It focuses properly and the exposures are all correct and everything. It freezes motion at fast shutter speeds as it should. Both the lens and camera are running the latest firmware. But the shutter definitely sounds slower and chunkier with only that lens on for some reason. Any ideas? Thanks.

1) Hi all! I wonder if my af assist lamp is working correctly or is misaligned. The light circle that it emits is almost half blocked by RF 24-70 and rf 70-200, which drop a shadow on it. It is +/- OK and may be even better for central AF point since the is the border of light and shadow, that is almost in the center of the frame creating a contrast, but for example if I move a focus point a bit to the left the af-assist lamp is totally useless, since there is the deep shadow from the lens. In case of RF 35 mm its is not a problem, as the lens really short.

Do you have the same issue?

2) Do all the Canon R5 AF point have the same sensivity or like in DSLR cams peripheral points are worse? I noticed that in low-light conditions R5 focuses better with central points and in some cases can only focus with them, whereas side af point may be slower or fail focus at all especially when using wide lenses ( is that due to light fall-off?)

When I load my R5 pictures from my Sd card they go onto my Windows 10 Computer just by the year Not a separate folder by date like all my other canon cameras do I dont know what I am missing I have never seen this does anyone know if its setting in Camera or possibly on my Windows Computer Thank you

Hi all, bought the R5 for stills but loving its video capabilities.
In my video cameras (Sony FS5, EX1 etc) I’m accustomed to using the histogram as an exposure aid.
On the R5 I can bring the histogram up on the rear screen, but as soon as I start to record video, it disappears. Anyone know if it’s possible to keep the histogram displaying while recording? And if so, please can you post the exact setting?

An RF mount camera with an APS-C sensor has been long rumoured since the launch of the EOS R system. Canon themselves will neither confirm nor deny such a camera is coming, which means such a camera is coming.
I have been told twice recently that an APS-C sensor equipped RF mount camera is in the wild with a select group of photographers. One of the sources claims that the APS-C camera “looks nearly identical to the EOS R6”, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise, I also expect specifications to be nearly identical as well. I get the feeling we’re past the point of test mules being in the wild, so the R6 comparison is probably quite accurate.
I do think we’ll see an “EOS R7” announced sometime in 2021.

DxO has completed their review of the Canon EOS R6, and found the sensor to be quite capable, even if it doesn’t move the needle a ton. DxO gave the lower megapixel brother of the Canon EOS R5 a sensor score of 90, which puts it a point behind the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and 5 points behind the Canon EOS R5.
The sensor for the Canon EOS R6 is apparently built on the sensor from the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, and with the latter scoring a 91 from DxO, it appears that they’re closely related.

DxO has completed their review of the Canon EOS R5, and has scored the new 45mp sensor 95, which is the highest score ever for a Canon image sensor. I don’t think this should surprise anyone that has used the Canon EOS R5, as the image quality is stellar from the camera.
The sensors that are scoring higher than what Canon has put into its new mirrorless cameras are BSI image sensors, which can be found in the Nikon Z 7, and Z 7 II along with the Sony A7R III and A7R IV. However, DxO has found that Canon has closed the gap considerably.

Hi everybody!
I have noticed that the central part of the top plate around the hot shoe ( it covers wi-fi modules, hyroscope etc) is slightly wobbly at the far edges and does not fit tight with the rest of the top plate near the lens mount ( its edges protrude slightly above the rest of the plate around 0,5 mm). I can press it by the sides with fingers and see how it plays a bit. I have attached a photo, where I circled the slightly protruding part ( the photo shows the plate from one side only, but the other side is the same). I have asked CPS and they say that it is normal. I, however, doubt it and am afraid of potential sealing issues.
I would kindly ask the r5 owners to check if their plates are the same. Please check before you say "zero play in mine" ) ( there are always people who say about zero play, when there is obvious play due to construction like with the IBIS rattle of stabbed lenses and bodies)

DXOMark published their review of R5 & R6 both scoring pretty well.

In the past, Canon DSLR's have performed better in video mode with ISO's in multiples of 160. 160, 320, 640 etc... For example on the 5d2 or the 1dx2 this was the case. 640 was clearly cleaner than 500. Does anyone know if this is still the case with the 1dx3? I just picked one up, and the base iso in video is at 400, so I am wondering if this might no longer be the case.

That said, more than 1/3 of you voters would still buy a 5D Mark V DSLR if it were to be released despite the very existence of the new R system. Impressive.

Read the 1/100s mechanical shutter shock issue before and after purchase of R5. I did not take it seriously, as a DSLR user, i thought any shock is peanut compared with mirror flip.

But, suprisely, I'm not so impressive the image from R5. I felt my R5 is not always as sharp as my 5D (I,II,III,IV, i did not miss any one), most case, it's worse.

I started to suspect the shutter shock and decided do a test myown.
