The Canon Rumors Discord channel has been relaunched

I have decided to re-launch the Canon Rumors Discord server due to popular demand. There will be some changes with how I moderate the server.
There will be no political talk. I think most rational people know that this type of discussion leads nowhere positive in the current environment. I have been guilty of it a few times on Twitter, but I realized my mistake in doing so. There are countless other places for people to discuss those topics.
I will build the server slowly once I see the flow of conversation and grant certain requests.
You can join the Canon Rumors discord server here.

Announcement Soon: Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 and Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-7.1 IS USM

The long-rumored Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM will be announced soon as reported easrlier this week, and it was a longtime part of the Canon RF lens roadmap.
Canon will also be announcing a Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-7.1 IS USM in the near future. This is a non-L lens. While I cannot confirm the aperture range of this lens yet, I have reported it as an f/5.6-7.1 IS USM on the roadmap.
The third lens will be a Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 prime lens. This is a non-L prime lens and has not appeared on the roadmap until now. This is an interesting prime lens for a full-frame sensor. If an APS-C RF mount camera is coming, this would be a nice and compact 25mm f/2.8.
More to come…

Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM to be one of the next lenses announced

Canon will be adding another wide-angle zoom to the RF lineup sometime over the next month or two. Expect to see a Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM  as a little brother to the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM.
The Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM uses the product code 4857C005.
Our Canon RF lens roadmap has had the RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM on it for quite some time.
I don’t know the price at this time, but if I had to give a prediction, I’d say $1199-$1299 USD.

Extenders on RF 100-500mm, RF 800mm and EF 400mm DO II

The-Digital-Picture does nice IQ tests with charts but they are all at different distances so that the image fills the frame. I want to know how different telephotos perform and resolve details on a chart at a fixed distance away. Here is a collection of tests I have done for various lenses on the R5. The chart, courtesy of Bob Atkins, is only 13.6cm across, about the size of a small bird. The numbers on it are line pairs per mm. The distance was 20m, which means tests were performed outside in natural light that varied over time. I also used a standard laser printer for the chart and so the lines are not at high resolution - irregularities can be detected at pixel level peeping. Even so, you can get a good idea of how the lenses and extenders perform.

John has done an analysis with some high resolution charts.
And I have done some earlier comparisons.

The sensor in the upcoming Canon EOS R3 is designed and manufactured by Canon

After the development announcement of the Canon EOS R3, the internet went a bit silly with stories about who is actually manufacturing the image sensor in the Canon EOS R3. Why it mattered? I don’t know, but I stayed away from the claims made by a bunch of sites.
PetaPixel reports that Canon has directly told them the following about the Canon EOS R3 image sensor.
The sensor in the upcoming EOS R3 camera is Canon designed and manufactured.
I’m glad this issue has been put to rest and we can get on with things.

Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM

Surprised this website hasn't picked up on the Nokishita tweet saying that this will be the next RF lens to be launched...

It has big shoes to fill in the form of the 16-35 F/4 of course but if it can pull off solid IQ at 14mm that would make it an incredibly appealing option.

Presumably it will be designed with edge to edge sharpness and a relatively flat field curvature in mind. I am a huge fan of my 15-35 though it sometimes seems to produce unpredictable extreme corner results at 15mm...

Two new Canon RF lenses appear for certification

Two unreleased lenses have appeared for certification in Russia. This brings the total of known unreleased lenses to three.
The most talked-about lens recently has been the long rumoured Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM.
Usually, once lenses reach certification agencies, you can expect them to be announced within 90 days. However, there could be some delays because of the manufacturing challenges that still exist.

Canon R6 Screen/Viewfinder Settings

Hey Guys,

I got my R6 today and was setting it up, mostly successful but I can't figure out one thing: how do I set up the back screen to only work (or come to life if you will) when prompted by pressing "Menu" or playback buttons? Is it doable? Basically I want only Viewfinder to work all the time and the screen only after pressing "Menu" or playback. How do I do this? :)

I know I can flip back the screen but I want to have this possibility to use it only when prompted.

Thanks,
P.

Patent: Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM as well as an RF 24mm f/1.2L USM and RF 28mm f/1.2L USM

Is Canon planning to make f/1.2 the new standard for all of their L prime lenses up to the focal length of the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM?
The Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L has been rumored for quite some time and has appeared on our RF lens roadmap since the beginning. There have also been previous patents for an RF 35mm f/1.2L USM.
Canon News has uncovered another patent for an RF 35mm f/1.2L USM optical formula, along with two other f/1.2L prime lenses that would be highly desired, an RF 24mm f/1.2L USM and (oh joy!) an RF 28mm f/1.2L USM.
If all of this comes to fruition, this will be a very hard set of prime lenses to beat.

Canon R5 backfocus.

finally i confirmed my R5 is backfocusing
1f641.png

i know Mirrorles shouldn't do that but probably it's a slightly sensor missalligment.
Firstly i noticed using my Sigma 35mm f1.4, Eye autofocus was locking on eye, but reviewing pictures sharpest point was ears. I updated FW, issue mostly dissapeared but still slightly exist. Then i adapted my old Tamron 150-600 i was getting missed shots when distance was greater. I've done many tests including rulers, on 20m distance was missing not by much (around 1-2cm back) But for greater distances 60m> focus sometimes was missing by meter or more. I was blaming old lens, requiring FM update (need's sending to service). I connected Sigma issue to Tamron and simply i thought it's just a lens but recently i sold Tamron and picked up Sigma Sport 150-600, and what a surprise... Same issue, slightly less than T but issue persist then i also tested rest of my lenses.
EF 70-200 2.8 IS mk1. Same small backfocus on every locked point on greater distances.
EF16-35 III. Hardest to spot as this lens have bigger dof, but after locking AF on subject, small pull on focus ring makes subject slightly sharper.
Sigma 35mm f1.4 - giving best results so far after update, very small backfocus really hard to justify. but exists.
On EVERY lens and after every focus confirm pulling back focus ring slightly makes subject tiny bit sharper

Also what i've noticed is all lenses are not focusing back to MFD's (always red square) but can focus from pulling back manually, also Focus bracketing when reach infinity still makes 3-4 extra shots for no reason, that's also giving proof sensor don't match with focusing.

I made this thread in few R5 FB groups to find people with simmilar results and maybe sollution to this?

There may be as many as three RF mount APS-C cameras on the horizon [CR1]

I have discussed an RF mount camera with an APS-C sensor many times in the past. I haven’t received any information that I would call definitive about such a camera, but more and more information from unknown sources has been coming in over the last little while.
I have been told by an anonymous source that there will be three APS-C equipped RF mount cameras coming in the future. If this is true, this should be the death knell for the EOS M system.
The first APS-C RF mount camera that is rumoured to be announced is the EOS R7.  I am told that the announcement for this camera could come as soon as Q4 this year, or Q1 in 2022.
The second APS-C RF mount camera will be the EOS R8, this camera will be designed for vloggers and other types of social media creators.
The third APS-C RF mount camera will be the EOS R9, and this will be the entry-level camera to the EOS R system.
If all of this turns out to be true, it would definitely be the end of the EOS M system.

Always learning - A tale of the RF 15-35 and a dark night

All,

Tried to do some Milky Way shots over the weekend. Set up the composition with a foreground tree and was in an appropriately dark place. The sky, unfortunately did not cooperate due to some wildfire induced haze, and the images are just so-so. But, I had some new experiences with the RF 15-35 f/2.8 on my R5.

After calculating the hyperfocal distance and placing myself the correct distance from the tree, my practice shots had the tree and the sky all the way to the horizon in reasonable focus. Then, I awaited the sunset. But, when I took my first shot, the focus was way off. I had to shine a bright light on the tree, refocus, then proceed with a few shots. After waiting 15 minutes of so for the next set of exposures, the same thing occurred. I'd use manual focus with the light (isn't the R5 manual focus great, by the way?), get things set, and take a series of images that would be in focus, again. The cycle repeated. In frustration, once the focus was set, I placed a piece of gaffer tape to keep the ring from moving, but after the next 15 to 20 minute interval, the focus was off again.

Then, it occurred to me. This lens uses "focus by wire". When the camera went to sleep, I am betting the focus reverted to its baseline state. I increased the "go to sleep" interval to 10 minutes (I usually keep it at one minute to conserve the battery), and it helped.

Is my assumption correct or is there a problem with the lens? If this behavior is normal, then lets all learn from it. Another difference between my DSLR with EF lens setup.................

Appreciate any comments in advance.

Canon EOS R3 to have a 30mp sensor? [CR1]

The biggest question surrounding the upcoming Canon EOS R3 is what the megapixel count will be for stills shooters.
Over the weekend two anonymous sources told me that the camera will sport a 30mp sensor. One of the sources did say “around 30mp”.
Since this comes from unknown places, please treat it as such for now. If I receive confirmation from a known source, I will let you know.

The Canon EOS R3 is out in the wild

The Canon EOS R3 is inching closer to the full official announcement, and it looks like select photographers are getting their hands on the new Canon RF mount flagship.
The Canon EOS R3 is apparently being used at the G7 summit in the United Kingdom this week.
The early comments from shooters seem to be extremely positive, take this Nikon shooter for example.

Firmware Upgrades

Hello fellow Cannonites. Just a general firmware question. I have the 1dx3. I recently upgraded my firmware to 1.4. I noticed that as I updated my firmware I went from 1.2 directly to 1.4. I guess I must have missed version 1.3 etc. Is there any harm bypassing 1.3 and going to 1.4? Do i lose any of the upgrades 1.3 had?? Any help would be appreciated.

This is what caused Canon to pull firmware v1.3.2 for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

A couple of weeks ago Canon released firmware v1.3.2 for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. It was a minor firmware update, but earlier this week Canon pulled the firmware. The exact reason Canon pulled it was unknown at the time.
A Canon Rumors reader has sent me communication from Canon USA that explains why the firmware was pulled.
From Canon USA
Firmware version 1.3.2 caused a phenomenon when using the self-timer shooting (10 seconds) with the electronic sound set to “ON” where the timer will repeat for 10 to 3 seconds and does not shoot.
This firmware version has been removed from our website and a current fix is being implemented. This fix is expected to be released in the first half of June, there is not an exact release date...
