Small question about RF 35+85 STM lenses

Friends, recently I was in a store and wanted to buy R5 + RF STM 35 mm and 85 mm (both lenses have stabilization and macro mode, you know). What surprised me was the speed of focusing in video mode! Everything is terribly slow! In photo mode everything is fine, but as soon as I turn on the video mode, the lenses don't have time to focus on my wife's eyes, for example. And I so wanted to shoot a blog about children and our dog. Very very very slow, on any settings!

After reading the forums and reviews, I realized that Canon specifically slows down the STM motor so that the sound does not spoil when recording in video mode. But I don't need to record audio, I use a directional microphone or recorder.

Question! How do I get these two lenses, which are great in their characteristics, to focus faster, in both the two photo and video modes equally? I tried all the settings I could find. Nothing helps! Do you also have these two lenses focus slowly in video mode? Or did I miss something? With 50 /1.2 and 24-105 /4 video mode works fine.

Thanks!

The first Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM shipment appears to have been delayed

When Canon officially announced the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM and the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM, both lenses were scheduled to be available in early to mid-December. While the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM has begun shipping, we’re still waiting on the RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM.
It now appears the first shipment of the new lens will not happen until January 28, 2021, according to many retailers, including Adorama. There is no word on why the delay, it’s just a sign of the times I think...

SIGMA to start producing RF mount lenses in 2021

Nikon Rumors is reporting that SIGMA will begin producing lenses for the RF and Z mounts some time in 2021.
There is no word on how SIGMA will develop for the RF mount. Will we get new optical designs? Will we get the control ring?
Whatever SIGMA chooses to do with their RF mount lenses, they’re going to be quite welcomed by Canon shooters.

New to the RP and about to throw it against the wall. Focus help.

So, having a hard time finding an answer online. I just picked up the RP for a deal I could not pass up. It is one of the original kits that included the 24-105 non L and the adapter. Still at original firmware. I got to the hotel were staying at, put my 50mm 1.8 on it with adapter and its going crazy trying to focus anywhere I move it. I put the RF 15-35mm 2.8L on it and it does the same thing, constantly trying to focus. I did reset all camera settings as it was a display model I think. It still is always trying to find focus when I move the camera. Im coming from a 7D and 77D that neither tried to focus until the shutter was half way pressed. Is there something I need to change in settings or is this a mirrorless handicap?

Canceling My Rf 100-500mm Order...Or not?

I've had the lens in my B&H shopping cart for about a month. Adorama also shows them backordered. Amazon, surprisingly, has them in stock--sold by Amazon. I hung in a little longer because of a $100 discount offer, but I think by next year such discounts will be back.

I'm glad I've had the extra time to think. The 100-500 is very expensive, especially considering that this would be more of a hobby lens for, not one for portraits and events.

What bothers me most about the lens design is the tele-extender limitation. And, yes, light as it is, the f/7.1 limitation is also something that seems to lower the value for me.

Interestingly, when I first started looking for comparisons online several months ago, most of the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary reviews were not very positive, just concluding it was a decent lens at a bargain price. But lately my youtube "Recommended" feed has been showing older and newer reviews of the Sigma, and they are all much more positive about image quality and AF. Really hard to know what to believe without trying it for myself.

But my GAS is in a mellow state at the moment, and I realize I can wait to see if Sigma is going to announce plans for an RF version of the lens next year, or if Canon has plans to offer something a little faster and longer--even if it is heavier and a bit more expensive. As things stand, I just can't justify the 100-500mm price tag with its perceived limitations.

Memory card containing firmware is required to update

I saw this issue on another website.

The OP said :

"After 6D firmware update successfully and SD card formatted,"

"When I pressed on the set button and re-checked the firmware, the above wording appeared. I then inserted another SD card and formatted it in the 6D. Checked firmware version and "Memory card containing firmware is required to update" popped up.

Is that an error ? How do I do to remove it. I have low level formatted the cards. The second card definitely never has any firmware on it."

Here is the link : https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/...mware-is-required-to-update/m-p/326248#M47978

I have several canon DSLR cameras, they behave the same when I select the firmware version button. Is that normal.

Equivalency - Now with pictures!

Introduction

An image says more than a thousand words!

Alright, so show, don't tell! ;) What's up with all this talk about equivalency that seemingly derails every thread around here?

I'll be showing you actual images that illustrate what I am basing my post on, when I participate in these discussion around here. And you are free to just skip right ahead and view these images further down! But, may it help you to get some context on how these images are taken, what they are supposed to show and why they may not show it as best as possible? I believe so. So here's some talk to go along with todays main menu of pictures.

Quick note: I'm writing this in dialog form, but you don't need to feel like I'm addressing you directly or putting words in your mouth with the scentences written from the Perspective of my conversation partner.

R5 + RF lenses mount issues?

Hi everyone,

I just noticed this now after getting my second RF lens (R5 and 15-35mm RF, 85mm f2 RF), but the camera mount and lens mount don't appear to be evenly parallel or flush when looking at the camera from the top down. Does anyone have this with their RF mounts as well? I only noticed it after mounting my new 85mm f2 outside and the light was shining through the gaps.

I think the enclosed pictures are much better at describing what I mean. Can anyone confirm the same or not?

Cheers

New SIGMA strategy? More Cine-like?

Hello!
I had a look at Sigma's new lenses with E- and L-mount:
I series
IMO this is a new hybrid style for stills and video with AF and an aperture ring.
The aperture ring can be switched to auto or be used manually.
And the body of the lens looks like a cine lens:
Built to the mechanical and operational standards of SIGMA Cine lenses, in compact mirrorless form, the I series have outstanding feel and touch in the hand. The well-damped manual focus ring, aperture ring, and autofocus switches embody true functional beauty.

SIIGMA also released a new 105mm ART macro lens in E- and L-mount with the same aperture ring.

I think it is a clever move of SIGMA to optimize lenses for stills and video at the same time.
I wonder if other manufacturers will follow this strategy.

Laowa 15mm shift - a challenge to my TS-E17?

I've had a Laowa 15mm f4.5 Zero-D shift lens to try for some time and have written up some notes, including a quick comparison with the Canon 17mm

Although 'shift only' it's a good challenger to the 17mm, especially given the difference in price

I've also a video that looks at the lens (and ways to use it)

... and I'm definitely looking forward to an an RF t/s lens at 14mm (and the howls of 'no-one needs this')

Ditch high definition and new tech to fight climate change

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-55164410
A report from The Royal Society (the UK’s National Academy of Sciences) says digital technology’s estimated contribution to global emissions ranges from 1.4% to 5.9% of the global total. HD video streaming on a phone generates about eight times more in emissions than standard definition (SD).
https://www.rt.com/sport/506960-cristiano-ronaldo-instagram-energy/
"Every time Cristiano Ronaldo posts an image, let's say an average one, for that image to travel to his 240 million followers, it consumes roughly around 36 megawatt hours. That's the equivalent of adding 10 UK households to the grid for one year. "And that's one person, one post."

To save the planet, we should ditch 8K and 4k and use lower resolution. And we should be changing our phones and gear less frequently.

Jolly Ollie Advent Calendar, 2020

I'd like to post one photo of my new kitty, Ollie, with a (hopefully) funny caption for each day of this 2020 Advent season (Nov. 29 through Dec. 24) to make a "Jolly Ollie Advent Calendar". For those interested, I hope you like it and you are welcome to comment or post your own interesting photo and caption.

Around June we got Ollie from our friend Lori when he was 6 weeks old. At that time I was using my Olympus EM1_II and lenses to take the initial photos I'll post here. Later I got the Canon R5 and RF lenses which are used for most of the remaining days. All photos are handheld without flash. While I'm just an amateur photographer and no comedian, I'll do my best in hopes of making you laugh (or at least smile a little). ;) All comments/poems are mine, unless credited below.
