In Stock Notice Canon EOS R5 at Canon store

I just noticed the R5 is showing as in stock at the canon store but no where else.

I did not grab one as I already have one on order at Bestbuy with a 10% discount as it was an eligible item for the birthday discount they sent out

Regards

Well, well, well… could this be Canon’s lens roadmap for 2021? [CR2]

I can finally post information that I know about Canon’s lens plans for 2021, this information comes from a great source and I would lean on most, if not all of it being accurate.
These lenses are likely next in the pipeline:

Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
External zoom, extremely small size. I’m told it’s about the size of a coke can.
Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
This lens will be better optically and in build quality than the EF version.

These lenses are likely being announced in 2021:
The TS-R lenses are “groundbreaking” autofocus tilt-shift lenses for the RF mount.

Canon TS-R 14mm f/4L
Canon TS-R 24mm f/3.5L
Canon RF 10-24mm f/4L USM
Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM
Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro
Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM
Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
Canon RF 135mm f/1.4L USM
Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-7.1 IS USM
Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon RF 500mm f/4L IS USM
Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM
Canon RF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM
Canon RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM.

So there you...

should you buy the RF 2.x extender ? wish I hadn't !

hi All,
just got my RF 2.x and have to say I am massively disappointed, and just posted my first negative review on Canons web site :

maybe i should have checked the specs more thoroughly, but this does NOT turn your RF100-500 into a 200-1,000 as it has a massive extension tube that protrudes into the lens barrel so the lens only retracts to 300 (ie 600) so you can't easily walk around with this when its attached as it makes the lens too big. Guess sits fine if its attached to a tripod and you are not going anywhere, but if you are shooting wildlife and they / you start coming closer you going to be wanting to take this off. this is a VERY weird deign choice - could they not just have made the tube itself bigger ?
like i say it does show this in the specs, so maybe my fault :
A mechanism which limits the zooming of the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM zoom range (300 to 500 mm) prevents the lens elements hitting those of the extender.

but it has kind of limited the usefulness of this lens as its robbed me of both portability and zoom length.

am I being harsh ?
for me its made a much less workable design.
will be great for taking pictures of teh moon, but not sure I would take it with me to shoot birds / safari - bring back my EF100-400 where i used to have a 2.x and a 1.4x and an extension tube meaning i could get var combinations of anything from 140 - 560 or if i plugged out all together 280 - 1,120mm

Has Canon developed a new 21mp sensor for the Canon EOS R system? [CR1]

Canon Watch is reporting that Canon has developed a new 21mp full-frame sensor and suggests we may see it in an upcoming EOS R camera.
New sensor specifications:

21MP full-frame sensor (6.4um)
Global shutter
120dB dynamic range (This translates to 20stops of dynamic range)
120 fps
The image sensor may be based on the 2/3″ sensor shown for ISSC 2017.

I haven’t been told anything that confirms the above information, so please take the information with a grain of salt.

Laser Lights can damage the camera's sensor, scary!

Just read a post on Reddit that a laser light can damage your sensor and require replacement of the sensor. This may or may not be covered under the warranty as it's not an equipment failure. Check the link below for more information. The explanation for the failure was listed:

"“The damage occurs when the laser beam hits the lens directly or reflected off of a highly reflective, flat surface. The lens intensifies the light and it shorts out a pixel. Since pixels are addressed by row and column, the entire row and column corresponding to the pixel no longer work.” This explanation was found in a post of a wedding photographer who had the exact same outcome as you."

Industry News: The first Nikon Z 9 specifications

Nikon Rumors has released the first specifications for Nikon’s professional Z 9 mirrorless camera. This will complete with Sony’s pro A9 series camera and the rumored Canon EOS R1.
Perhaps Nikon has their resources into this camera and its why the D6 was such an incremental update.
Rumored Nikon Z 9 specifications:

Nikon Z9 is expected in the fall of 2021
No official plans for a Nikon Z8 camera yet
Prototype Z9 cameras may be tested at the Tokyo Olympics next year
New Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 mirrorless lens is also rumored for the Olympics
The Z9 is described as a D6 body combined with EOS R5 imaging, α9II AF, and blackout-free EVF

Are there two version of the RF 35mm f/1.2L USM coming? [CR1]

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM has been rumored for quite some time, I have been told multiple times that Canon would like a line of f/1.2L prime lenses for the RF mount.
Now I have been told that Canon may also be working on a DS (defocus smoothing) version of the RF 35mm f/1.2L USM to be announced sometime in the first half of 2021.
We haven’t seen a patent for such an optical formula yet, but there are a lot of optical formula patents for an RF 35mm f/1.4L USM, including one with a soft-focus setting. It’s quite possible that there are a lot of prototypes of these lenses.
This information comes from an unknown source, so treat it accordingly.

HELP! R5 problem... What is this circle please?

R5/100-400L II/1.4X III - straight out of the camera - no PP, just saved a JPG from Lightroom.

If you look at photo 1 (top) there is a circular line that passes through the robin - looks like a white fold line.

In photo 2 (bottom) taken two seconds later from exactly the same location, there doesn't seem to be any line present.

Any idea what this could be?

I have a series similar to the top photo and all have the line.

I have a series similar to the bottom photo and all look fine (unless I just can't see the line..

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I love this freaking camera OMFGBBQ.

Two ‘Big Whites’ coming for the RF mount in 2021 [CR2]

I really wanted to know when we would be seeing our first RF mount ‘Big White’ lenses, so I reached out to a couple of sources and received a little bit of information on the topic.
I was told by both sources I spoke with that Canon plans to announce at least two such lenses in 2021. These lenses will come alongside the Canon EOS R1, which looks to be coming in the 2nd half of 2021, though delays are obviously possible.
One source said one of the new lenses would be an RF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM, but neither of them knew what the second lens would be.

The Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM were inspired by lenses from the 1960’s

Two of the strangest and surprising products Canon announced this year were the Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM super-telephoto lenses. There really isn’t any other lenses like these on the market, and reviewers have been pleasantly surprised by how useable these lenses are.
DC Watch had the chance to interview the Canon engineers responsible for these lens designs, and it’s kind of cool where the idea for them came from.
Top to bottom: The Canon R 600mm f/5.6, Canon R 800mm f/8 and Canon R 1000mm f/11 lenses...

Industry News: You can finally preorder the Zeiss ZX1, but it’ll cost you

One of the more interesting cameras announced back in 2018 was the Zeiss ZX1, an Android-powered, fixed-lens full-frame camera. It would appear Zeiss is going after the market that the Leica Q series pretty much sits alone in.
It’s been a long time, but you can finally preorder the Zeiss ZX1, for a cool $6000 USD. When the ZX1 ships is unknown at the time of writing this.

About the Zeiss ZX1:

Modeled after the ethos “Shoot, Edit, Share”, the ZEISS ZX1 is a truly innovative camera with an uncompromising position on all facets of photography. Designed first to be a camera to appeal to the purists, the ZX1 revolves around a full-frame 37.4MP CMOS sensor, which affords high-resolution stills shooting along with 4K video recording. The sensor’s design permits shooting at up to 3 fps and has a broad sensitivity range of ISO 80-51200 to suit working in various lighting conditions...

IBIS with EF Lenses

My R5 arrived on Friday. One of the first tests I was curious about was how good would IBIS + in lens IS be on something like my EF 16-35 f/4L IS. In two different tests, I really did not see much of an improvement over in-lens IS only, getting down to hand holdable shots around 1/8 to 1/4 of a second and not the 1-2 secs I am hearing go by with those using the RF 15-35. Of course, much of this could be the EF mount, fewer connection pins, etc. But I am curious what others are finding with their EF lenses.

135L autofocus performance - have I got a lemon?

I've recently bought well-used examples of the 135L and 85LII and need to decide within the next week or so whether to keep them. I'm not convinced about the AF of the 135 and I'm wondering whether what I'm seeing is typical.

I'm using a 7D2. Other lenses include a bunch of EF-S zooms, Sigma 50 Art and the old 70-200 OS (pre-Sport), and the EF 85/1.8.

I've microadjusted the 135 to +8, which gives me a reasonable hit rate, but only reasonable. Focusing on my own car's number plate at a range of 10 m or so while it's sat on the drive, I'd say I'm getting maybe 60% spot on, 20% near miss that I'd consider acceptable (the sort of thing you could cover up with a bit of deconvolution sharpening and nobody normal would notice in casual sharing), and 20% miss. Misses seem to be randomly either substantially in front (like a metre or so) or a similar distance behind. (This is using centre or near-centre focus points, the hitrate seems to drop further with points closer to the edge.)

I'm talking here about focusing wide open. I'm using exclusively AI Servo and back-button focus as I do with all my other lenses. I never focus-and-recompose, I always click the shutter with AF active. The results described above would be using either single-point AF or single-plus-four expansion, I don't see much difference either way. I've also tried spot AF with the 135 and it maybe gives slightly more reliable results, but only slightly. (I only occasionally use spot AF in the normal run of things as typically I find tracking more reliable with single or single-plus-four).

I'm reasonably confident that the misses I'm seeing are not the result of user error - there is clearly nothing anywhere near the active focus point that is in focus, but I can generally find a band of sharp focus either in front of or behind the intended subject. (I have found that 1/250 is a little too slow with the 135L so I've got auto ISO set for minimum 1/500.)

Of these two lenses I currently have on trial I was expecting the 85L to be the finicky diva but actually I've found it not too bad. I certainly don't get 100% hitrate with the 85L wide open, and the tracking performance obviously isn't great, but I'd expected that. What I wasn't expecting was to find the 135L not really much more reliable at f2 than the 85L is at f1.2.

I'm also finding the 135L slower to focus than I expected. My go-to for capturing action would be the 85/1.8 which I've used to photograph sprinting dogs and suchlike with a decent hitrate, even wide open. That also goes for the Sigma 70-200 OS (which as I said above is the non-Sport version). The 135 isn't bad - obviously it's much faster than the 85L - but it's certainly nowhere near as quick as the 85/1.8 is, and it also seems slower than the Sigma 70-200 (though now I write that I haven't compared them side by side). I haven't tried it properly yet with anything moving especially fast but it just doesn't seem very quick.

Both the 85L and the 135L give much more reliable focus in Dual Pixel live view than through the viewfinder unless I'm trying to track action - no big surprises there.

Does that sound typical of your experience with the 135L, or is the one I've got on its last legs? Optically it's absolutely fine - the glass looks clean and clear - but the focus ring is fairly well-worn. I think it has seen a fair bit of use, though it doesn't look to have been knocked about too much.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated - thanks!

R5 always on?

Just got my R5. I have both EF and RF lenses for it.

One funny quirk: with the camera off, toggle the Autofocus on/off switch; a sound will be heard from within the camera. That switch is not electronic and the sound has a slight delay.

I was always suspicious that my 5D4 was consuming the battery when the camera was off, I'm guessing the R5 is even worse.

Oh well. Splendid camera. "Disappears" with use in ways I'm not sure any of my 5D did. Here's hoping to seeing great places for which to use it!

Canon EOS R6 buffer depth issue

Hi there,
My R6 arrived a week ago and its a love at first sight. However, I noticed that buffer depth seems to be narrower than I expected. At he right bottom corner it shows 65 shots to go, which I have tested... no matter how slow or fast SD card I am using it with. Its same number using my Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-II (ws: 260 MB/s) and my older Sony UHS-I card. While buffer depth of 65 pics could rarely be an issue, given a fast card I assumed something closer to 240 raw shots claimed by Canon.
Am I missing something here? Any insight on this?

Thanks in advance.

All the best,
Adam

Canon EOS M50 Mark II Specifications [CR2]

The Canon EOS M50 Mark II has been confirmed and should be announced before the end of 2020. The new EOS M camera promises to build on the feature set of the much loved original EOS M50.
Rumored Canon EOS M50 Mark II Specifications:

32.5mp APS-C CMOS sensor
DIGIC X (maybe a new version)
DPAF II
14fps
4K @ 60p no crop
No IBIS
Similar EVF resolution as the EOS R6
Single SD card slot

Most of this seems pretty logical. I don’t think Canon would care much about cannibalizing EOS M6 Mark II sales. The lack of IBIS is going to upset some folks, but I’m not at all surprised by the omission if these specifications are legit.
More to come…
