Firmware: Canon confirms January firmware release for RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM fix

A couple of weeks ago it was reported that Canon would be releasing a firmware update to fix an autofocus issue with the brand new Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM when shooting at or near its minimum focusing distance.
Canon has now confirmed that the update/fix will come in January 2020.
It has been confirmed that when using the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM to perform AF shooting to capture a subject at close-range with the focus distance approximately set to the Tele-end (200mm), the image may become slightly front-focused.
New firmware with improved focus accuracy is scheduled for release in the beginning of January 2020, and once the preparations are completed, we will post the information on our website.
Note: New firmware being released at this time is for lenses equipped with firmware version 1.0.5 or earlier. The lens firmware version can be checked in the camera’s menu.

Tamron 70-300 SP Di VC on EOS M5

Hi guys,

I ordered a Tamron 70-300 with the original Canon lens adapter for my M5, assuming it would behave as any other original Canon lens. Now I talked to Tamron and they say that this lens will not be compatible in this setup. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Based on reviews, I ordered the Tamron 70-300 for my backpacking. However, if this will result in issues I will quickly order the Canon 70-300, which is slightly more expensive though

Thanks,
William

OpticalLimits Reviews the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM

OpticalLimits, formerly Photozone.de has completed their review of the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS Macro STM.  Personally I feel that this is a start of a series of lightweight small primes for the Canon RF mount.
They give it a solid review, with the breakdown of scores of;

Optical Quality – almost 4 out of 5 stars
Mechanical Quality – 3.5 out of 5 stars
Price / Performance – 4 out of 5 stars

Not exceptional scores, but it is at the lower end of the price spectrum for the Canon RF mount.
The Canon RF 35mm F1.8 has;

Wide-angle prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera...

EOS 5D Mark II - End Of Service Life

For all those still using an EOS 5D Mark II camera the following information:

I received an e-mail from Canon Germany that the official time for the service lifespan of this model will end this year. (after 7 years)
Servicing and spare parts will no longer be available for it at Canon Service Centers (at least in Germany).
If you need servicing or spare parts, you will have to contact your service partner first.

Enjoy your gear.
I hope that mine will last many years longer without servicing ;)

Need help, buying Cannon EOS R: Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM v. RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Here's my profile: beginner photographer, getting into Cannon's mirrorless EOS R, but I want my first lens to either be:
Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM (I know, older but great for wide shots etc., and yes, know I need the adapter)
or
Get the EOS R with the kit lens: RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I want to shoot around NYC, portraits, travel, food, scenery, landscapes etc.

EVENTUALLY, I'm going to save up for RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens.

So, should I get the EF 16-35mm f/4L with EOS body? Or EOS body with kit lens RF 24-105mm f/4L IS?
It'll be pretty much the same price, but since ultimately I'll get the 70-200, should I be fine with 15-35 EF for walking around photography?

Plus, the EF 16-35 will still take stunning shots with EOS R and mount, correct?

Would love opinions etc

Thanks in advance, Happy Holidays!!!

Canon EF or RF: Shooting Medium Format Lenses with Kipon Adapter

Hi all,

I was surfing YouTube the other day, and came upon videos showing modern DSLR's and even mirrorless shooting with adapters using older Medium format lenses.

I saw examples of using adapters by Kipon that worked for EF and RF mounts, and mostly using Mamayia 645 lenses which seem to be fairly highly thought of, but can be still had in good condition for not that much money....

Here's an example: Canon goes Medium Format - EOS R + Kipon Baveyes MF Focal Reducer Review

It seems to be a bit of a speed booster set up....

As you might have seen from some of my other posts, aside from Canon, I've been dabbling with some medium format film shooting, and this caught my eye, as what might be a fun crossing of the two....

Has anyone had any experience with these adapters and shooting older medium format lenses on their more modern digital FF cameras?

If so, please give me your thoughts and impressions.

I'm always looking for fun new lenses that don't cost an arm and a leg to play with....the adapters aren't cheap, but with a one time buy, you can then use a number of cheaper lenses on them....

Anyway, thanks in advance for any input!!!

Another Canon Patent on IBIS + IS

CanonNews has uncovered another patent on IBIS and IS working together in a future Canon camera.
This patent, according to CanonNews seems to be dealing with the potential of the composition to change as IS and IBIS work together while taking the picture.

Canon seems to have spent (since this application was submitted June 2018) a considerable amount of time and effort working out all the details necessary for the effective operation of dual IS before the first adaptation of it in a camera.
Because the sensor is deep inside the camera body in the diagram, also there is no pentaprism assembly and Canon specifically mentions an EV, this camera body appears to be an EF camera with an EVF.  While it’s certainly possible that Canon may decide to make an EF camera “mirrorless” it’s altogether possible that this was just one of the various options that Canon was considering at the time of patent...

Just picked up the Canon 70-200mm F4L for my EOS RP

I was looking at old Lightroom files from my Canon career starting in 2005 and forgot what a joy this lens is. Offered in 1999 and still manufactured and sold today, I picked it up brand new (I rarely buy new lenses) if I can avoid it, for $549 (on sale). Imagine that, a 20 year old lens! Congratulations Canon on this old beast still being sold new today! I tested it out briefly on my Canon EOS RP using the standard adapter, and works great. Taking it on a trip this weekend. I've also attached a sample used on my original Canon EOS M bought on launch day, with the 70-200 fully racked at 200mm. A 320mm equivalent. It's supremely sharp on my large 27" monitor, at 1:1. Not bad for an old optic.

Don't pass up this lens.. such a value for money. I also bought an adapter to use for my Fuji XT3.

Canon Participates in the University of Miami’s Coral Reef Restoration Project

MELVILLE, NY, December 19, 2019 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, and its wholly owned subsidiary, Canon Solutions America, Inc., announce Canon Solutions America’s participation in a Coral Reef Restoration Project, spearheaded by the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The environmental sustainability initiative launched on November 20 with university scientists, students, and Canon team members embarking on a collaborative expedition to plant the commemorative reef.

The steep decline of coral reefs has resulted in a sizeable loss of keystone coral species, several of which are now listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Additionally, one-third of all coral species risk extinction, and three-fourths of the coral reef population, are considered highly threatened. Active reef restoration, such as this program, can help to recover these deteriorated coral populations. To kick off the program...

Announcement details on the 1DX Mark III

Overnight we have received both some information on the release of the 1DX Mark III, and a new interesting image.  I apologize for the low quality of the image, I removed the photographer from the image to protect their identity, but what we are seeing in this camera, is certainly not any 1DX series camera I’ve seen (and it looks really cool I might add).  Is this simply a prototype or is Canon thinking of doing something radical for the 1 series lineup and giving it different looks?
I looked at image given to CR by a source and didn’t think it was a Mark II.  Apparently it was!  I make mistakes at times.
Another source mentioned to us that the 1DX Mark III will be available for inspection at a major dealer in Australia in February, with a release in April.  This would have Canon doing an official announcement sometime in February, before CP+.  Considering this is the major tradeshow in Japan, and the Olympics are being held later on in 2020 in Japan, this seems like a very likely...

What surprises does Canon still have in store for the EOS-1D X Mark III?

As the world knows, Canon has announced the development of the EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR. While some good information was given by Canon about the upcoming flagship DSLR, not everything about the camera has been made public.
We have been told by multiple sources that there are at least 2 “major” features that are unannounced at this time.
The first one, and probably expected is that the EOS-1D X Mark III will shoot 4K video without a crop and with DPAF.
One source also claims that 5.9K external RAW recording has also been tested in the EOS-1D X Mark III prototypes, but that a decision had not been made at the time of the testing whether or not to include it. We were told a few months ago that 6K was a possibility for the EOS-1D X Mark III.
IBIS hasn’t yet been confirmed by any of our sources at...

The dangers of GAS.

I have often said I could be very satisfied with two zooms and no primes. I started out well with just the RF 28-70. Then I got impatient waiting for whatever would eventually be offered in a longer f/2 zoom, and ended up with the 50, 85mm f/1.2 primes. No regrets.

My query is: How may of you bought out of sheer impatience? Will you still buy when a longer fast zoom is released? I find it hard to believe the f/2.8 fills that void and that Canon think will have another f/2 showoff lens... not to mention a faster 135mm than previously offered.

It's a slow Sunday, like most Sundays around here, so I am trying to spur some conversation.

Canon RF 24-70 f/2.8 Axial Chromatic Aberration

Hi,

I have an EOS R, RF 24-105 f/4L kit lens, 35mm f/1.4L II and EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro.

I'm thinking of getting an RF 24-70 f/2.8L possibly for photographing weddings, but I saw the disco axial CA/spherical aberration on The Digital Picture's review (https://media.the-digital-picture.c...8-L-IS-USM-Lens/Spherical-Aberration/70mm.jpg). Perhaps I'm expecting too much as the RF 24-70 f/2.8L doesn't have a BR element like the 35mm f/1.4II so shows lateral and axial CA. To what extent is this disco CA a real-life problem?

Alternatively, is the 15-35 f/2.8L a better option for this application? I like the RF 70-200 f/2.8L, but it's a dust-puffer and the front focussing issue is a deal-breaker. Some online shops seem to have temporarily discontinued sales.

Any advice gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Martyn

Firmware update coming to address Canon RF 70-200 focus issues at MFD

Canon has acknowledged focusing issues with the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM at its minimum focusing distance and is preparing a firmware update to address the issue, it looks like Canon will get this update out as soon as possible.
Canon News was the first to aggregate the issues some users have experienced with the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. If you don’t use the lens at MFD, you won’t notice the troubles.

Can someone recommend a Hasselblad or good Medium Format Forum?

Hi all,

Per some of my posts, you know that I've acquitted a Hassleblad 501CM film camera and a Yeshiva MAT 124G (found for a steal).....

I still love my Canon and still shooting it, but I was thinking if anyone knew of a good forum more dedicated to Hassie's and medium format film cameras, I really have a lot of questions about them, things like how to get an arca swiss plate to fit on them both, what kinda flash sync cables they use, etc.

Anyway, I"m STILL here and very interested, but if someone knew of a forum that was specialized in these I'd be interested in that too!!

I"ve googled for them, but only so far, found a couple that didn't seem to have had any posts since like 2 years ago....

TIA,

cayenne

Patent: Canon RF kit zoom lenses

CanonNews discovered another patent detailing some interesting kit zooms that start off at the ultra wide-angle.  It’s unknown if Canon would ever make such a lens, but the zoom range is very intriguing.
It’s also a lens that could double for a standard lens for APS-C.  However, it would bigger than it would need to be since it’s designed to cover the full frame image circle.

This is the second patent found with these lenses, indicating to me at least, that there is active interest inside of Canon for this type of lens.

Nikon cutting way back on genuine parts for repairs in the USA

In March of next year it looks like Nikon users will have to send their cameras in to one of only two repair centers if they want genuine parts: Ifixit article

The most interesting line in the article is "Every shop owner we spoke with mentioned that Canon, while no longer offering warranty repairs through authorized shops, still sells parts at a competitive price to repair shops in good standing"
